An experiment was performed upon visual discrimination of shape by the octopus in order to test two predictions derived from a theory of visual discrimination of orientation and shape. Two groups of octopuses were trained to discriminate between a square and a triangle and between a diamond and a triangle. It was found that octopuses discriminate more readily between a square with base horizontal and a triangle than between a diamond and a triangle. Transfer tests showed that: (1) For the octopus, an upright and an inverted triangle have more equivalence than a diamond and a square with base horizontal. (2) Octopuses do not discriminate between the figures used by analysing only differences in one part of the figures (e.g. bases or tops). (3) Having learned the initial discrimination, octopuses transfer to both larger and smaller figures. (4) A pentagon has more equivalence to a square or diamond than to a triangle. (5) A circle is not treated as equivalent to a square. The results are taken to be in agreement with the theory that octopuses analyse the vertical and lateral extents of figures, and that shape discrimination is achieved by analysing the changes in the rates of change in the firing of neurons representing the vertical and lateral extents of the shapes. The results are shown to differ from those obtained with birds and rats, but to agree with results found for higher mammals where these are available for comparison.  相似文献

An investigation of the relative discriminability of circles and squares, and circles and triangles for octopus is described. The main findings were: (1) The three pairs of figures, circle and square with base horizontal, circle and square with base at 45° to the horizontal, circle and equilateral triangle were equally discriminable for the octopus. (2) Complete transfer occurred to larger and smaller figures. (3) No transfer occurred from a square in one orientation to a square rotated through 45°, nor did training with the square in one orientation lead to any saving when the discrimination was relearned with the square in the other orientation. (4) No transfer occurred from a square to a pentagon. (5) The method of training with reward on every positive trial leads to quicker initial learning of a discrimination than training with reward only where the positive figure is attacked, but discriminatory performance with the two methods approached the same asymptote. The results are in agreement with findings with other animals where these are available for comparison.  相似文献

Experiments are described showing that Octopus can be trained to distinguish by touch between a cube and a sphere, a surprising result since previous work has always indicated that octopuses cannot take proprioceptive information into account in learning. It can be shown, however, that the cube/sphere discrimination is made by detecting the distortion imposed on the rims of individual suckers in contact with the corners of the cube. Thus it is shown (1) that a cube with the corners even slightly rounded is less readily distinguishable from a sphere than a cube with sharp corners and, more important, (2) that a narrow rod is readily accepted in place of the cube by trained animals. Indeed, the rod seems to be a “better” cube than the original, and errors of discrimination decrease when it replaces the cube, presumably because it lacks flat surfaces liable to be confused with the surface of the sphere by a system depending on information from sense organs arranged in circles on the rims of the suckers.  相似文献

We explored the ability of humans to identify individual cats by smell. Twenty-five cat owners were required to indicate which of two odours (one belonging to their own cat and one belonging to an unfamiliar cat) smelt the strongest, most pleasant, and which belonged to their own cat. Only thirteen (52%) of the participants were able to recognise the odour of their own cat.  相似文献

The domestic dog is able to identify both individual conspecifics, i.e. other dogs, and individual interspecifics, e.g. humans, by smell. Whilst humans can recognise individual members of their own species using olfactory information, it is unknown whether they can identify members of any other species in this manner. We examined the ability of humans to identify individual dogs by smell. Twenty-six dog owners were required to smell two blankets, one impregnated with the odour of their own dog, the other impregnated with the odour of an unfamiliar dog. Participants were required to indicate which of the odours smelt the strongest, which smelt the most pleasant, and which of the odours belonged to their own dog. Most of the participants (88.5%) were able to recognise the odour of their own dog. They showed no significant bias, however, in responding which of the odours they thought smelt the strongest or most pleasant. The results indicate that dogs produce odours that are individually distinctive to their owners, and highlight the fact that humans can recognise members of another species using olfactory cues--an ability presumably acquired without conscious effort.  相似文献

Data are presented which support a mathematical model for visual movement perception. An observer’s ability to judge the relative position of two successively presented points of light in an otherwise dark room is shown to diminish as the inter-stimulus interval is increased. However, a measure of visual position memory appears to remain invariant a5 this interval is varied. Neither the degree of head stabilization nor whether viewing is monocular or binocular appreciably alters this measure.  相似文献

Julesz (1975) proposed a theory of texture discrimination, based on an order statistics principle, which states that no two textures can be perceptually discriminated if they have identical second-order statistics. The experiments reported here demonstrate that this principle is not adequate to predict visual texture discriminability. Both letter and dot micropatterns were used to create texture pairs that either differed or were identical with respect to secondorder statistics. The subject’s task was to decide which quadrant of an array contained a disparate texture. In Experiments 1, 2, and 3, when controlling for spatial overlap, texture pairs having identical second-order statistics were discriminated more quickly than similar texture pairs having different second-order statistics, in contradiction to the principle. Although a significant effect in the direction predicted by the order statistics principle was found in Experiment 4 for texture pairs created from the dot micropatterns, other factors, such as spatial overlap, border differences, and goodness of pattern, must also be considered in predicting texture discriminability.  相似文献

In three picture-picture matching experiments, the effects of a view change on our ability to detect a shape change (Experiments 1 and 2) were contrasted with the effects of a shape change on our ability to detect a view change (Experiment 3). In each experiment, both view changes and shape changes influenced performance. However, shape changes had more influence than did view changes in the shape change detection task Conversely, view changes were more influential when the task was to detect view changes. Thus, the participants could often discriminate between the effects of shape changes and the effects of view changes. The disruptive effect of task-irrelevant changes (view changes in the first two experiments; shape changes in the final experiment) does not support Stankiewicz's (2002) claim that information about viewpoint and about shape can be estimated independently by human observers. However, the greater effect of variation in the task-relevant than in the task-irrelevant dimension indicates that the observers were moderately successful at disregarding irrelevant changes.  相似文献

Human observers seem to be able to use different features that classify materials with a large degree of accuracy. In this paper, we look at human perception of statistical properties of the spectral distribution in a scene. We investigated whether human observers can discriminate just as accurately between coloured textures that have a spectral distribution due either to shading only or to both shading and specular reflectance as between uniform colours. Thresholds for the discrimination of coloured textures are about 15 times as high as thresholds for the discrimination of uniform colours, provided there is a sharp transition between the two colours. However, the coloured texture thresholds are only 1.5 times higher when we introduce a gradual transition between the two colours. There are also distinct qualitative differences in discrimination thresholds for different base colours. These differences cannot be predicted from discrimination thresholds for uniform colours. Human observers are surprisingly good at discriminating between a material edge and a shadow edge in complex scenes. Statistical differences in the orientation of the colour distributions in colour space might be used to accomplish this. In a second experiment we investigated how well observers can discriminate between two linear distributions in colour space that have the same base colour but different orientations. When we vary the line-length in R, G, B space, thresholds cannot be predicted completely by the conservation of the average distance between the two distributions. This means that observers use not only the maximum colour difference in the stimulus to do the task, but other cues are also involved.  相似文献

Visual discrimination of vowel duration   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
Discrimination of vowel duration was explored with regard to discrimination threshold, error bias, and effects of modality and consonant context. A total of 122 normal-hearing participants were presented with disyllabic-like items such as /lal-lal/ or /mam-mam/ in which the lengths of the vowels were systematically varied and were asked to judge whether the first or second vowel was longer. Presentation was either visual, auditory, or audiovisual. Vowel duration differences varied in 24 steps: 12 with a longer first /a/ and 12 with a longer last /a/ (range: ±33–400 ms). Results: 50% JNDs were smaller than the lowest tested step size (33 ms); 75% JNDs were in the 33–66 ms range for all conditions but V /lal/, with a 75% JND at 66–100 ms. Errors were greatest for visual presentation and for /lal-lal/ tokens. There was an error bias towards reporting the first vowel as longer, and this was strongest for /mam-mam/ and when both vowels were short, possibly reflecting a sublinguistic processing strategy.  相似文献

Two experiments are described in which an attempt was made systematically to vary two dimensional shapes according to a pre-arranged design. In the first, subjects were presented tachistoscopically with pairs of “reflexive matrix figures” whose members were either horizontally or vertically orientated; and it was found that reaction times to horizontal pairs were faster than to vertical ones, a result that is in keeping with previous findings. In the second experiment two ensembles were devised that were alike in every respect save that one group was extended or reduced vertically while the other varied horizontally. Performance was better on the vertically orientated ensemble. These findings are briefly related to former studies and the pre-eminence of vertical symmetry is underlined.  相似文献

Summary Choice reaction time (RT) depends on the relationship between responses, and these dependencies are usually interpreted in terms of the advance-specification assumption. According to this assumption characteristics that are the same for the choice responses can be specified in advance of the response signal, thus allowing faster RTs. Since the advance-specification assumption is called into question by some of the available data, an alternative interpretation is suggested and formalized in terms of an accumulator model. According to the programming-interactions assumption, stimulus processing is tightly linked to response programming, so that both the possible responses are programmed as long as there is uncertainty with regard to stimulus identity. This gives rise to interactions between simultaneous processes of motor programming. Predictions of this assumption for the joint effects of signal similarity and the relationship between responses are tested and confirmed. This research was supported by grant no. A new visual shape discrimination apparatus for use with rats is described. Rats were trained on a simultaneous discrimination using stereometric shapes, and the reward was milk which was delivered through the middle of the shapes. Animals were trained to discriminate vertical and horizontal rectangles on the apparatus, and it was found that they took as many trials to learn as on a Lashley jumping stand. Because of the speed at which individual trials may be conducted, less actual time is spent on training in this apparatus than in a Lashley jumping stand. Some transfer tests were conducted and indicated that: (1) although the bottom halves of the shapes were more important for rats than the top halves, animals had learned something about the shapes as a whole; (2) animals transferred to discontinuous shapes; (3) they transferred better to larger shapes than to smaller; (4) they had learned both to approach the positive shape, and to avoid the negative shape.  相似文献

Using a method of successive discrimination, 10 toads (Bufo bufo), were trained to discriminate between horizontal and vertical rectangles each 5.0 ± 7.5 cm. After training, one optic nerve was severed in certain animals and the stumps pushed well apart to delay regeneration. The non-operated animals retained their learning over the rest-period of 10 weeks at a level similar to training. The animals with one eye showed considerably less retention than the non-operated animals.  相似文献

Observers in this study judged which of two fields contained the greater number of spots. Spots had difference-of-Gaussian luminance profiles and could differ in contrast polarity or were of uniform luminance and could differ in size. Weber fractions for all observers except one varied little except when spots varied in size. It is suggested that the results of this and previous studies might be explained by the existence of neurons tuned for number.  相似文献

The associative structure mediating goal-directed action was investigated using congruent and incongruent conditional discriminations. The stimulus was the same as the outcome in each component of the congruent discriminations, whereas the stimulus of one component of the incongruent discriminations was the same as the outcome of the other component. Humans, but not rats, learned the congruent discrimination more rapidly than the incongruent discrimination, a difference that the authors attribute to the fact that outcome-response associations caused response conflict in the incongruent discrimination. Moreover, responding was resistant to outcome devaluation following incongruent, but not congruent, training, suggesting that both humans and rats adopted a stimulus-response strategy to resolve the incongruent discrimination.  相似文献
