Nanoindentation-induced elastic–plastic transition and size effect in α-Al2O3(0001)

The mechanical properties of α-Al₂O₃(0001) have been investigated using the technique of nanoindentation with a Berkovich indenter. Coupled with the Hertzian contact theory, a theoretical shear strength of 28?±?2?GPa was determined from the onset of pop-in events on load–displacement curves during loading, and the intrinsic hardness 30?±?3?GPa was obtained by analysis of the so-called indentation size effect, based on the concept of geometrically necessary dislocations. The predicted values of the shear strength, hardness and elastic modulus are in good agreement with available experimental data. The importance of experimentally calibrating the area function over the contact depth range prior to nanoindentation tests is emphasized.     

Interfacial defects in YBa2Cu3O7-δ/SrTiO3(0 0 1) heterostructures studied by aberration-corrected ultrahigh-resolution electron microscopy

The microstructure of interfacial defects in YBa₂Cu₃O_7-δ/SrTiO₃(0?0?1) heterostructures has been investigated by aberration-corrected ultrahigh-resolution electron microscopy. We determine that c-axis-oriented YBa₂Cu₃O_7-δ thin films epitaxially grow on SrTiO₃(0?0?1) with two types of interface structure. The coalescence of nucleation sites with different types of interface structure leads to the formation of antiphase domain boundaries in YBa₂Cu₃O_7-δ thin films, which terminate at planar faults with different configurations near the interface. Stand-off misfit dislocations are observed and the dislocation core structure is explored. Based on the interface structure and interfacial defects, the initial growth mode of YBa₂Cu₃O_7-δ thin films on SrTiO₃(0?0?1) is discussed.     

Structural analysis of 30RO–30Al2O3–40B2O3 ( R = Mg,Ca or Sr) glasses

Bond-compression and ring-deformation models are used to quantitatively analyze the acoustical properties (elastic moduli, Poisson's ratio, Debye temperature and longitudinal attenuation) of 30RO–30Al₂O₃–40B₂O₃ glasses (in wt%), where R?=?Mg, Ca or Sr. The network structure of the glass is quantified in terms of the four-fold coordinated formers, atomic ring size, cross-link density, first-order stretching force constant and bulk modulus. It is found that network strength increases in the order Mg?>?Ca?> Sr. Structural changes of the glasses are deduced by relating the elastic moduli, the ratio of bond compression to experimental bulk modulus and ultrasonic attenuation to structural parameters and oxygen density.     

When 2–3% really matters: The (un)importance of religiosity in psychotherapy

Previous research suggests that clients’ religious beliefs are commonly excluded from therapeutic practice. Often, this exclusion is attributed to practitioners’ lack of knowledge or appropriate skills. Such analyses, however, have little regard for the interactional aspects of the therapist/client encounter. Drawing upon work within discursive social psychology, we argue that the exclusion of religious beliefs does not reflect therapists’ lack of knowledge or awareness but can more usefully be seen as the discursive accomplishment of marginalizing clients’ beliefs. Six practising psychotherapists were interviewed about religious beliefs within the therapeutic process. Participants construct religious beliefs as important but relevant only to restricted categories of clients. They rework religious beliefs as compatible with accepted practice, or construct particular groups of clients as incompatible with the process. Training and other requirements are reformulated in terms of spiritual beliefs rather than religious beliefs. These constructions display awareness of religious beliefs while marginalizing their relevance in practice. Inclusion of clients’ religious beliefs to best effect will require more psychotherapy to engage more constructively with religion than it does at present.

Abstract

This study examined the importance of the nature of the relationship between sexual partners in predicting types of sexual practices for 293 gay and bisexual men. Demographics, personal beliefs, substance use, and variables from the health belief model, theory of self-efficacy, and theory of reasoned action were used to predict sexual behaviors. Sexual practices varied by type of partner relationship and duration, with a higher probability of risky behaviors occurring with primary partners than with non-primary partners; relationship status also moderated the effects of safer sex partner norms and denial on sexual risk-taking. In addition, men who were younger, had less education, and used alcohol or drugs prior to sex engaged in higher risk behaviors. This study indicates that a more comprehensive assessment of dimensions of partner relationship will lead to greater understanding of sexual risk-taking.     

Twin formation and structural modulations in orthorhombic and tetragonal YBa2(Cu1-xCox)3O7-δ

Abstract

The microstructure of YBa₂(Cu_1?xCo_x)₃O_7?δ, prepared by the standard ceramic method, shows lamellar twin structures with decreasing spacings between twin walls with increasing Co content for x?0·02, developing into {110}-type cross-hatched ‘tweed’ modulation for x?0·02. Several wall junctions are found for x=0·02. The structural phase transition between macroscopically orthorhombic and tetragonal material occurs at x≈0·025; structural modulations (λ≈20Å) persist in the samples with high Co content (x>0·25). The modulations lead to a considerable broadening of the X-ray lines affected by orthorhombic splitting, and show maximum amplitude at the critical composition x≈0·025.     

Study of incommensurate modulation in V-doped La2Cu1- x (VO) x O4 + δ by transmission electron microscopy

Structural variations in a hole-rich grain of V-doped La₂Cu_{1? x} (VO) _x O_{4+ δ} (x?=?0.045, δ?=?0.011) superconducting compound have been studied by electron diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Two types of one-dimensional (1-D) incommensurate modulation were observed one after the other when the specimen was exposed to electron beam irradiation. The features of these two modulated structures have been studied and are discussed.     

Luke's Portrayal of the Social Dimension in the Ministry of Jesus and the Apostles (Luke-Acts) According to Isaiah's Message of Social Justice in Chapters 61:1–2 and 58:6

ABSTRACT

This article seeks to explore the manner in which Luke depicts the social aspects of the ministry of Jesus and the apostles in Luke-Acts based on his citations from Isa. 61.1–2 and 58.6. In essence, it demonstrates that Luke's appropriation of Isaiah motifs was not just spiritual but also practical. In doing this, the author appraises the dominant interpretive rubrics with which scholars have discussed the influence of Isaiah on Luke's account, namely, jubilee and second exodus. While acknowledging that these are prominent Isaiah themes in Luke, the author argues for a third—the kingdom of God as the controlling theme in Luke, to which both jubilee and second exodus are subsets. Exodus is necessary for the formation of a new nation or kingdom but it is not in itself the kingdom. Jubilee is the governing principle of the kingdom of God, a theme that runs through Luke-Act.     

Reproductive Endocrinologists’ Utilization of Genetic Counselors for Oncofertility and Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) Treatment of <Emphasis Type="Italic">BRCA1/2</Emphasis> Mutation Carriers

Genetic counselors believe fertility preservation and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) discussions to be a part of their role when counseling BRCA1/2 mutation-positive patients. This study is the first to explore reproductive endocrinologists’ (REI) practices and attitudes regarding involvement of genetic counselors in the care of BRCA1/2 mutation carriers seeking fertility preservation and PGD. A survey was mailed to 1000 REIs from Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility (SREI), an American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) affiliate group. A 14.5 % response rate was achieved; data was analyzed using SPSS software. The majority of participating REIs were found to recommend genetic counseling to cancer patients considering fertility preservation (82 %) and consult with a genetic counselor regarding PGD for hereditary cancer syndromes (92 %). Additionally, REIs consult genetic counselors regarding PGD patient counseling (88 %), genetic testing (78 %), and general genetics questions (66 %). Two areas genetic counselors may further aid REIs are: elicitation of family history, which is useful to determine fertility preservation and PGD intervention timing (32 % of REIs utilize a cancer family history to determine intervention timing); and, interpretation of variants of uncertain significance (VOUS) as cancer panel genetic testing becomes more common (36 % of REIs are unfamiliar with VOUS). Given our findings, the Oncofertility Consortium® created an online resource for genetic counselors focused on fertility preservation education and communication strategies.
