Grain-boundary migration is demonstrated to proceed by lateral propagation of a small step in a (113), [110] symmetric Al tilt grain-boundary. In-situ high-resolution (transmission) electron microscopy (HREM) at 523K allowed the study of atomic-scale detail at video rates during the migration process. The grain-boundary translational states on both sides of the step are identical, which leads to a step dislocation. This defect can move laterally by a combination of climb and glide. Dynamic HREM images indicate considerable atomic agitation within the dislocation core. A detailed temporal analysis of the step movements shows small random displacements of the dislocation core.  相似文献

ObjectiveFunctional neuroimaging may provide a viable means of assessment and communication in patients with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) mimicking the complete locked-in state. Functional neuroimaging has been used to assess residual cognitive function and has allowed for binary communication with other behaviourally non-responsive patients, such as those diagnosed with unresponsive wakefulness syndrome. We evaluated the potential application of functional neuroimaging using a clinical-grade scanner to determine if individuals with severe GBS retained auditory function, command following, and communication.MethodsFourteen healthy participants and two GBS patients were asked to perform motor imagery and spatial navigation imagery tasks while being scanned using functional magnetic resonance imaging. The GBS patients were also asked to perform additional functional neuroimaging scans to attempt communication.ResultsThe motor imagery and spatial navigation task elicited significant activation in appropriate regions of interest for both GBS patients, indicating intact command following. Both patients were able to use the imagery technique to communicate in some instances. Patient 1 was able to use one of four communication tasks to answer a question correctly. Patient 2 was able to use three of seven communication tasks. However, two questions were incorrectly answered while a third was non-verifiable.ConclusionsGBS patients can respond using mental imagery and these responses can be detected using functional neuroimaging. Furthermore, these patients may also be able to use mental imagery to provide answers to ‘yes’ or ‘no’ questions in some instances. We argue that the most appropriate use of neuroimaging-based communication in these patients is to allow them to communicate wishes or preferences and assent to previously expressed decisions, rather than to facilitate decision-making.  相似文献

The deformed microstructure of a Ti-48.9at.%Ni thin film has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. It was found that Guinier-Preston (GP) zones exist in the thin film and the martensite has (001) compound twins as substructure. The microstructure of the martensite shows that the GP zones do not stop both the shear deformation of martensitic transformation and the twinning shear of (001) deformation twin in the martensite phase. These results give a microstructural explanation for the previous result that Ti-rich Ti-Ni thin films with GP zones show a large transformation strain despite the presence of the GP zones.  相似文献

The critical current densities of superconducting thin films and their dependence on the film structural characteristics has been a major research interest for more than a decade. Controlling this relationship is crucial if large-scale high-quality YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 (YBCO) tapes are to be produced. Two major keystones of information have been established in this field. Firstly, there is a direct relationship between the critical current density and the grain-boundary angle in polycrystalline YBCO films. Grain boundaries with a mismatch angle higher than 5° usually result in reduced critical current densities. This detrimental effect of large-angle grain boundaries to the quality of YBCO films has been attributed to strain fields resulting from such grain boundaries. Secondly, the quality of the YBCO film can be enhanced by straining its lattice in specific direction. Here, we report, for the first time, direct experimental results coupling local grain orientation and local strain maps of thin YBCO films deposited on a (001) biaxially textured nickel substrate. These results were correlated to the quality of the film and showed how grain structure in the nickel substrate affects the grain structure in the YBCO films even in the presence of several buffer layers. More importantly, the data show that highquality films with high critical current densities can be produced, in spite of large-angle grain boundaries, if the film is compressed in the range of 0.5% strain normal to the a axis.  相似文献

Abstract

The question of the effect of an imposed strain on the topology of a soap froth is addressed through numerical simulations. Both the standard model of a ‘dry’ twodimensional foam and the case of small liquid fraction are explored. The froths are subjected to both extensional deformation and simple shear. The counter-intuitive result that application of strain can induce ordering in a disordered froth is obtained, quantified and discussed. A qualitative dynamical explanation is proposed.  相似文献

Two-dimensional grain-boundary sliding (GBS) was achieved microscopically in an oxide-dispersion-strengthened ferritic steel with an elongated and aligned grain structure, which was deformed perpendicular to the long axis. At the border between superplastic regions II and III, microscopic deformation was observed using sub-micron grids drawn on the material surface using a focused ion beam. GBS was accommodated by intragranular deformations in narrow areas around grain boundaries, which has been predicted by earlier researchers as characteristics of the core–mantle model. These observations suggest that dislocations slip only in the mantle regions around wavy boundaries to relax the stress concentration caused by GBS during superplasticity.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper considers the characteristics of severe plastic deformation (SPD) to estimate its efficacy and to compare different processing techniques. In contrast to effective strains by von Mises and Hencky, the rotation component of the strain rate is included in the analysis as a mode of deformation, which ranges from simple shear to pure shear. Distortions of material elements during a uniform plane plastic flow are calculated using a kinematic approach. For the fixed deformation mode, the current state is defined by the accumulated shears that are identical to the von Mises effective shear strains. In specific cases of pure shear and simple shear, the accumulated shears match the specific distortions of round or square elements prescribed by Hencky or von Mises approach, respectively. The mode of deformation is important to the structural effects of SPD. In general, two separated characteristics, accumulated shear and the coefficient of deformation mode, are necessary to describe strains during SPD.  相似文献

Grain-boundary grooving has been studied on polished surfaces of polycrystalline tungsten annealed at 1350°C. Atomic force microscopy images were taken in the same area for each groove after different annealing times. Secondary oscillations next to the main groove maxima (predicted for grooving by surface diffusion) were observed, to our knowledge for the first time. The agreement between experimental and calculated groove profiles (using the surface diffusion model of Mullins (1957, J. appl. Phys., 28, 333)) improved when grain-boundary fluxes were introduced.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The Young-Laplace equation was firstly established based on a liquid film without shearing resistance. It is not valid for a solid. By taking into account the in-plane shearing and transverse shearing within a surface layer, we reconstruct the Young-Laplace equation for a solid. This new version shows that the equilibrium of a solid surface is determined by the bulk stress, the surface membrane stress and the transverse shear stress acting together. The transverse shear stress depends on the gradient of the Gaussian curvature of the surface and the strain. The intrinsic membrane stress and transverse shear stress cause residual stresses to appear in the interior of the solid. The intrinsic transverse shear stress occurs only in a non-spherical shaped body.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the reliability and validity of Turkish version of the General Belongingness Scale (GBS; Malone et al. in Personality and Individual Differences, 52(3):311–316, 2012). The adaptation process was carried out with four independent studies, examining the data from two Turkish universities. In study 1, linguistic equivalence of the scale was examined. In study 2, after ensuring the linguistic equivalence, construct, convergent and concurrent validity of the GBS were analyzed. In study 3, predictive validity of the GBS was examined in order to provide additional evidence for the construct validity of the scale. In study 4, the internal consistency and test-retest reliability of the GBS were investigated. The results of this study revealed that both two-factor structure (Acceptance/Inclusion and Rejection/Exclusion) and one-factor structure of the GBS were acceptable. The GBS demonstrated positive relations with social connectedness, social safeness, life satisfaction and subjective happiness while negative relations with loneliness. Results also revealed that extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness, life satisfaction and subjective happiness were all positive predictors of the GBS. Finally, the results of the study indicated high levels of internal consistency and test retest reliability. These findings suggest that The GBS is suitable for use among Turkish youth. Suggestions for future research and for the use of the GBS were offered.  相似文献

The micromechanical model of extrusion formation in a single crystal under stress-controlled loading in high-cycle fatigue is reviewed. In the present letter, the microstress and strain fields of a single crystal under a high-amplitude fatigue are calculated by the boundary element method. Based on Schmidt's law, the resolved shear stress to activate or to cause the continuation of slip in a slip system is taken to depend on the amount of slip in that system. The cyclic strain hardening is calculated from the experimental tensile stress-strain curve. This calculated cyclic strain hardening is compared with the experimental cyclic hardening. Good agreement is shown.  相似文献

Nickel monocrystals oriented for single slip have been cyclically deformed at 77 K at plastic strain amplitude between 5 x 10-4 and 1 x 10-2 up to saturation of the stress amplitude. After unloading from maximum compression, the slip markings on the surface of the specimens were removed and the deformation continued for one half cycle in tension. As previously observed for room-temperature deformation, the plastic strain was found to be localized in narrow slip bands (SBs). Using atomic force microscopy at a given imposed strain amplitude, a wide spectrum of local plastic strains was found. The averaged resolved shear strain of the SBs was found to be independent of the imposed plastic strain amplitude and turned out to be a factor of three larger than the upper plateau strain limit of the cyclic stress-strain curve.  相似文献

Grain-boundary diffusion in the regime affected by internal stresses of triple-line disclinations is analysed. The concentration profiles in a stressed solid averaged over a distribution of hydrostatic stress gradients are calculated. It is shown that the stresses from triple-line disclinations in as-prepared submicrocrystalline metals can significantly increase the effective grain-boundary diffusion coefficient, which is obtained by fitting the concentration profiles to the solution of a diffusion equation for an unstressed polycrystal.  相似文献

Four monolithic metallic glasses (MMGs) with different plasticities varying from brittle to ductile behavior under unconstrained loading were subjected to small punch testing. All specimens undergo large plastic deformation with multiple cobweb-like shear bands under these conditions. The process of shear band evolution was carefully controlled and investigated. Plasticity of MMGs is characterized by equivalent plastic strain ε* (product of shear band density and critical shear offset). Thus, this article provides an experimental basis for a better understanding of the shear band evolution during plastic deformation of MMGs.  相似文献

Deformation of NiTi shape-memory alloys (SMAs) under dynamic tension has been studied. It is found that the stress plateau associated with detwinning still exists at the highest strain rate tested (300s -1 ). Beyond the stress plateau, when dislocation mechanisms dominate the deformation process, the strain-hardening effect is more strongly dependent on strain rate. The dynamically deformed specimens exhibit a shape-recovery process and a two-way memory effect which are identical with that for the alloy deformed under quasistatic conditions. The observations suggest that the detwinning process takes place in SMAs under dynamic tension.  相似文献

Precise X-ray diffraction measurements have revealed that phonon (conventional) strain is introduced at the phase transition from an icosahedral quasicrystal to its orthorhombic crystal approximant in a Mg–Ga–Al–Zn alloy. From the magnitude of the measured phonon strain, the phonon–phason coupling constant has been evaluated. This constant is approximately ?0.03μ (μ: shear modulus) and it is in good agreement with the result of a theoretical calculation reported previously (W.-J. Zhu and C.L. Henley, Europhys. Lett. 46 748 (1999)). This is the first study that experimentally evaluates the phonon–phason coupling constant in any existing quasicrystalline phase.  相似文献

A theoretical model is presented which describes a new mechanism of plastic deformation in fine-grained materials. In the framework of the model, rotational deformation occurs via motion of dipoles of grain-boundary disclinations and is associated with the emission of lattice dislocations from grain boundaries into adjacent grain interiors. Ranges of defect system parameters are identified in which the disclination motion is energetically favourable. It is shown that the mechanism can contribute to plastic flow in fine-grained materials prepared by highly non-equilibrium methods such as ball milling, severe deformation and high-pressure compaction.  相似文献
