Psychologists have much to contribute to HIV prevention. It is important to identify predictors of HIV preventive behaviour and to incorporate this information in AIDS education. The Health Belief Model is an established model of health behaviour that has recently been applied to AIDS prevention. It originally posited that perceptions of susceptibility to, severity of, and solutions to, illness predicted health behaviour. It thus emphasized “disease” dimensions of illness. It was expanded to include barriers to, cues to, and social support for, health behaviour. The enlarged model thus incorporated “social” dimensions of health behaviour. Because preventing AIDS involves a partner and considerable social risks and skills, inclusion of social components may improve the capacity of the Health Belief Model to predict HIV preventive behaviour. An inventory measuring condom use and the enlarged Health Belief Model was completed by 181 male and 171 female teacher-trainees. Data were analysed using multiple regression with hierarchical entry, first of disease dimensions (susceptibility, severity, solution), then social dimensions (barriers, cues, social support). Addition of social dimensions to the disease dimension equation yielded a significant F-change among both sexes and increased the variance explained from 16% to 30% among males, and from 4% to 14% among females. The full regression was significant only among males. The implications of these results for intervention goals, messages and strategies among both sexes are elucidated.  相似文献

Aims: Patients who are referred more than once to a Primary Care Mental Health Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) Service raise questions about those patients' clinical characteristics, the appropriateness of the interventions offered and their capacity to make use of them. IAPT treatments are based on National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines for the treatment of common mental health problems. NICE recommendations are based on evidence gained from clinical trials, in particular Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs), which tend to exclude the sort of patient with complex and co‐morbid conditions who often present in practice. Method: Using data routinely collected from the IAPTus clinical database, re‐referral patterns and level of complexity of 50 patients who were referred on more than one occasion to a Primary Care Mental Health (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) Team from 2009–2010, were analysed. Results: The evidence presented in this study indicates patients who re‐refer exhibit complex environmental, historical and psychological problems. Implications for practice: Although further research is required to compare the characteristics of this patient group with those who are referred only once, this study provides limited evidence that such patients may be more likely to engage and complete treatments that offer regular, structured and one‐to‐one interventions.  相似文献

General features of a probability model for errors of classification are recapitulated as an introduction to particular cases and applications. Several models for dichotomous and nondichotomous systems are examined in sufficient detail to elaborate a procedure for dealing with any particular case. The systemO =f(T,E) has empirical reference where, as statistic or parameter, probability of occasional subclass membership is given by observation, and one seeks to recoverT andE values fromO. A procedure for relating models and data is described. Applications of the concepts and methods are illustrated for several areas of psychological research. With grateful acknowledgment to the Rockefeller Foundation; and to the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, Public Health Service, for N. The seven articles in this issue, and the accompanying meta-analysis in Health Psychology Review [McEachan, R.R.C., Conner, M., Taylor, N., & Lawton, R.J. (2011). Prospective prediction of health-related behaviors with the theory of planned behavior: A meta-analysis. Health Psychology Review, 5, 97–144], illustrate the wide application of the theory of planned behaviour [Ajzen, I. (1991). The theory of planned behavior. Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, 50, 179–211] in the health domain. In this editorial, Ajzen reflects on some of the issues raised by the different authors. Among the topics addressed are the nature of intentions and the limits of predictive validity; rationality, affect and emotions; past behaviour and habit; the prototype/willingness model; and the role of such background factors as the big five personality traits and social comparison tendency.  相似文献

The field of marriage and family therapy faces a growing imperative to reach historically underserved populations. African Americans are a prime example of a minority group in the United States that continues to be underserved by the current mental health system. We integrate Andersen’s (1995, Journal of Health and Social behavior, 36, 1–10) public policy model of health service use with Fox et al. (1995, Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved, 6, 434–468) revision of the rural de facto mental health services model (Regier and Goldberg, 1978, Archives of General Psychiatry, 35, 685–693) to develop a more inclusive and culturally sensitive framework that captures salient factors influencing African Americans’ entry into and engagement in therapy. Recommendations for overcoming barriers and suggestions for future research are presented.  相似文献

This article provides a modern neurological explanation for the theoretical differences in psychoanalytic concepts and techniques between Freud and Jung. Specifically, the article contrasts their analytic skills as arising in the left and right brain, respectively. Modern neurological techniques reveal unique brain functions that explain many of the visionary and so-called mystic phenomena discussed by Jung. Many of his psychoanalytic concepts can be traced to right brain function. Modern research and philosophic analyses also provide light on Freud’s research method and its limitations.Barbara Stevens Barnum, RN, PhD, FAAN, former editor of Nursing Leadership Forum and Nursing & Health Care, is presently a writer/consultant. This study examined the association of cigarette smoking status and body image dissatisfaction as measured by the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ), in 1575 young adult college students, 18–24 years of age. Respondents were current cigarette smokers (N = 482) or never tobacco users (N = 1093). Smoking status was found to be significantly associated with 5 of the 10 MBSRQ subscales, with current smokers having lower scores on Fitness Orientation, Health Evaluation and Health Orientation (all p < 0.001) and higher scores on Appearance Orientation (p = 0.01) and Overweight Preoccupation (p = 0.03) compared with never tobacco users. Furthermore, among current smokers, a higher number of days smoked in the last 30 days were associated with lower scores on all MBSRQ subscales, except Self-Classified Weight. In terms of clinical implications, interventions for smoking cessation among college students might benefit from inclusion of components for addressing body image dissatisfaction and improving health beliefs.  相似文献

Among traumatized Cambodian (N=90) and Vietnamese (N=94) refugees attending a psychiatric clinic, the study examined the validity and psychometric properties of the Short Form-36 Health Survey (SF-36), a measure of self-perceived mental and physical health. In both patient samples, all eight SF-36 scales displayed excellent internal consistency (item-scale correlations and Cronbach's α). But, similar to other studies of Asian samples, (a) the Vitality (VT) scale did not separate from the Mental Health (MH) and General Health (GH) scales, as evidenced by item-scale and interscale correlations, and (b) the VT scale loaded as strongly (Vietnamese sample) or more strongly (Cambodian sample) than the MH scale on the so-called Mental Factor in a two-factor solution of the eight scales (with the GH scale also loading heavily on the same factor).  相似文献

Abstract

Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) emerging adults face additional stressors due to discrimination. Emerging adults (n?=?667) drawn from Waves I and III of The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) were used to assess how parent-child relationships moderated marijuana and illicit drug use. Sexual minorities with strong relationships with mothers had significantly lower odds of using marijuana, but significantly higher odds of using marijuana (but lower odds of using illicit drugs) when they had a stronger relationship with their father. Implications include improving parent-child relationships and identifying additional coping methods for LGB youth.  相似文献

Health-related Internet use has grown rapidly, yet little research has considered how health anxious individuals use the Internet for this purpose. Our aim was to examine the relationships between health anxiety and the extent of, reasons for, and consequences of health-related Internet usage in university students (n = 255). Responses on a purpose-made Internet use questionnaire were correlated with health anxiety scores; multiple regression analyses controlling for depression and anxiety were also conducted. Health anxiety positively correlated with (all ps < .01): frequency of health-related searching (rs = .163), proportion of health-related information sought (rs = .200), time spent online for health purposes (rs = .166), and number of searches for both illness (rs = .453) and wellness (rs = .208) information. Health anxiety further positively correlated with advantages perceived in health-related Internet use (rs = .183), heightened tension (rs = .364) and relief (rs = .174) post-search, and perceived doctor disadvantages (rs = .306), yet a greater likelihood to visit a doctor post-search (rs = .217). Health anxiety also correlated with six measures of possible addiction to using the Internet for health purposes (rs range = .171 to .366, all ps < .01). Some (including several potentially dysfunctional) aspects of health-related Internet use correlate with health anxiety. Research evaluating the possible role of Internet use in the development and maintenance of health anxiety is warranted.  相似文献
