Two experiments examined the influence of overtraining on the reversal of a concurrent discrimination. After rats are trained to criterion on two different discriminations in the same apparatus, the reversal of one of these proceeds more rapidly than when both are reversed. If the reversal is conducted after overtraining on the original discriminations, then the opposite pattern of results is observed. That is, learning about the reversal of both discriminations is more rapid than when only a single discrimination is reversed. Experiment 1 replicated this effect and suggested that it is not caused by differences in the rate of extinction during reversal learning. In order to test a cue-association account for these findings, Experiment 2 examined the effect of exchanging the negative stimuli of a concurrent discrimination. This manipulation had a disruptive influence on performance, but only when subjects were not overtrained on the original discrimination.  相似文献

Two experiments examined the whole-partial effect of overtraining in concurrent discriminations and assessed the effect against single discrimination training in rats. In Experiment 1 overtraining facilitated reversal in Group W, in which rats were given concurrent training on two simultaneous discrimination tasks (A and B) in original learning before both tasks were reversed. By contrast, overtraining delayed reversal in Group P, in which animals were given the same training as in Group W in original learning, but only Task A was reversed. After overtraining, Group W reversed more rapidly than Group P. Without overtraining, Group P reversed more rapidly than both Group W and Group C, in which animals were trained only on Task A before this task was reversed. Experiment 2 investigated the effects of overtraining on the reversal of a successive discrimination in Groups W, P, and C. In addition, animals in a further group, Group S, received the same concurrent training as Group W before Task B was omitted and Task A reversed. Overtraining facilitated reversal in Groups W, C, and S but delayed it in Group P. After overtraining, Group W reversed more rapidly than Groups P, S, and C. Both Groups S and C also reversed more rapidly than did Group P. Without overtraining, Group P reversed more rapidly than Groups W, S, and C. There were no significant differences in reversal performance among Groups W, S, and C. These findings indicate that the effects of overtraining on reversal learning in concurrent discriminations differ from those observed in single discriminations.  相似文献

Two experiments using rats were carried out in which it was shown that a quadratic function can best describe the relation between amount of initial discrimination training and speed of reversal learning for both a difficult visual and an easy spatial task. The results are used to explain the rarity of the over learning reversal effect (ORE) using easy tasks such as position discriminations. It is generally believed that the hippocampus is not required for simple discrimination learning. However, a small number of studies have shown that hippocampus damage impairs retention of a previously learned visual discrimination task. We propose that, although simple discrimination learning may proceed in the absence of the hippocampus, it plays an important role in this type of learning when it is intact. In order to test the role of the hippocampus in simple discrimination learning, we performed a series of experiments utilizing a two-choice picture discrimination task. Our experiments confirm that rats readily learn simple two-choice picture discriminations after hippocampus damage. However, if such discriminations are first learned while the hippocampus is intact, subsequent hippocampus damage causes severe retrograde amnesia for the discriminations. Furthermore, retrograde amnesia for simple picture discriminations was equally severe when the interval between training and damage was 1 d or 60 d; remote picture memories are not spared. Similarly, the rule or schema underlying a recently or remotely acquired picture discrimination learning set was lost after hippocampus damage. The severity of retrograde amnesia for simple picture discriminations is negatively correlated with the volume of spared hippocampus tissue. Thus, the hippocampus plays an essential role in long-term memories supporting simple picture discriminations.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted with rats. The first study showed that in the T-maze a brightness discrimination learning problem was more difficult than a spatial learning problem, but in a Ross-maze a brightness problem was less difficult than a spatial task. T-maze brightness and Ross-maze spatial tasks were found to be of equal difficulty.

In the second experiment rats were trained either on a brightness or spatial discrimination reversal problem in the Ross-maze. It was found that overtraining facilitated reversal performance in the spatial task but not in the brightness problem. The theoretical implications of these results were discussed.  相似文献

The characteristics of mediational mechanisms based upon magnitude of reinforcement were investigated using rats. In two experiments, two-choice discriminations were trained in which selections of one lever in one external stimulus and a second lever in another external stimulus were reinforced with food. In the first experiment, it was found that the discrimination was acquired more rapidly when one choice was reinforced with a large number of food pellets and the other with a smaller number of pellets than when other configurations of reinforcement magnitude were provided. In the second experiment, reversal of a two-choice discrimination was found to be facilitated by prior exposure of the animals to the reversed relationships between the external stimuli and magnitudes of reinforcement. These results were consistent with predictions from a stimulus or associative view of anticipatory processes based upon magnitude of reinforcement.  相似文献

In two experiments, rats acquired brightness discriminations in a free-operant circular runway with two response alternatives. Both individual and group choice times revealed continuous changes that were not apparent in the discrete measure of choice. Two major assumptions of Spence's discrimination learning theory were confirmed: (a) learning is continuous, and (b) discriminative stimuli in simple discrimination tasks of both simultaneous and successive types are compounds with position elements as well as elements from the relevant visual dimension. The distinctive, consistent pattern of learning revealed by the choice-time measure suggests that position habits reflect a learning strategy in which the complex task is learned as a series of simpler ones.  相似文献

In four studies, 3-, 6-, and 9-month-old human infants were tested in a discrimination learning task in which visual fixation to a particular stimulus or lateral position was reinforced with an auditory stimulus. In Experiment 1, all age groups exhibited acquisition, extinction, and reinstatement of fixation to the reinforced target or position. Experiment 2 revealed that 3-month-olds retained the positional discrimination but not the stimulus discrimination after a 5-min delay between acquisition and extinction; older infants retained both types of discriminations. In Experiments 3 and 4 we investigated a possible developmental shift in the dominance of positional versus stimulus cues by training infants on displays in which stimulus and position were confounded and then by dissociating the cues on test trials. Results from both experiments indicated positional cue dominance for young infants and stimulus cue dominance for older infants. The findings are discussed in terms of differences in the attentional demands elicited by proprioceptive versus exteroceptive cues.  相似文献

In two separate experiments, rats with bilateral lesions of the superior colliculus showed significantly poorer relearning of a horizontal/vertical stripe discrimination than control animals. In Experiment 1, all animals showed disruption of performance when a stimulus--response (S--R) separation was introduced by raising the stimuli above the site of responding. However, the colliculectomized rats were much more disturbed by the S--R separation than were animals in the control group. In Experiment 2, all animals showed lower performance levels when conflicting patterns were introduced into the upper portion of the stimulus doors, but this time the rats with collicular lesions were less disturbed than the control animals. It is suggested (a) that when the stimulus and response sites are discontiguous, animals must make an appropriate orienting response in order to effectively sample the visual stimuli and (b) that lesions of the superior colliculus alter performance by interfering with this orienting behavior. The impairment in relearning is tentatively attributed to the absence of preoperative overtraining on the discrimination task.  相似文献

Three experiments examined transfer of learning between a concurrent discrimination and a matching (or non-matching)-to-sample discrimination in rats. In Experiment 1, rats were trained to criterion (group NOT) or were overtrained (group OT) on two concurrent discriminations. Subsequently, group OT learned a matching (or non-matching) task more rapidly than did group NOT. In Experiment 2, rats were initially given matching (or nonmatching) tasks and then given whole or half reversal with these tasks. Group whole reversed faster than group half. In Experiment 3, two groups of rats were trained on matching (or non-matching) tasks, and then given concurrent discrimination training, followed by either whole or half reversal training (groups matching and non-matching). Another group (group control) received a pseudo-discrimination followed by the same training in Phases 2 and 3 as groups matching and non-matching. In groups matching and non-matching, rats learned the whole reversal more rapidly than the half reversal. But the opposite result was observed in group control. These findings suggest that transfer effects reported in Experiments 1 and 2 are governed by the same mechanism for the formation of associations between stimuli.  相似文献

The performance of rats over 12 brightness discrimination reversals was studied under two experimental conditions. Under one condition all visual cues external to the apparatus were eliminated so that only the relative positions of the discriminanda could serve as a visual cue to spatial position. Under the other condition all visual cues to position were eliminated. Under the former condition performance deteriorated with successive reversals but under the latter condition performance improved. Implications of these results for theories of successive reversal improvement were discussed and two possible explanations were suggested.  相似文献

Although reversal learning in the rat is normally assisted by overtraining, it seems that transfer to a new discrimination in a different stimulus dimension is not. This effect is confirmed in the present experiment, even though the stimuli of the second problem had been present (and necessarily attended to) in the first problem. This result is taken to show that the effects of overtraining cannot be accounted for by supposing that it strengthens an overt orienting response of the animal. A second group of rats was run to show that transfer to a second discrimination problem within the same dimension as the first is facilitated by overtraining. The important variable, therefore, that determines the direction of the effect of overtraining on transfer between problems, is the relationship between the stimulus dimensions concerned.  相似文献

Two groups of rats trained in the jumping stand acquired a horizontal stripes vs. vertical stripes discrimination and then learned its reversal. The groups differed in their pretraining. One group had previously learned a black vs. white discrimination; the other a discrimination in which the S- was the same as that used in the horizontal against vertical problem. S- pretraining facilitated not only acquisition but also the reversal of the orientation discrimination thereby confirming a prediction that reversal learning will be rapid when the original problem is learned chiefly in terms of the S-. It is suggested that overtraining may facilitate reversal learning, in some cases at least, by inducing animals to concentrate on the S-.  相似文献

An analysis of perseverative responding, position habits, and running speed in two experiments on Y-maze reversal learning is presented. These behaviours are described in terms of different goal approaching strategies in overtrained and mastery trained rats. Three groups of pigeons were trained on a red-green discrimination in which the stimuli were alternately presented in a multiple schedule of reinforcement. The discrimination was reversed 24 times. Groups were given 1, 2, or 4 hr of training on each discrimination. Increasing the length of training had two principal effects on reversal performance: it increased the rate of extinction of responding to one of the stimuli and increased the rate of reacquisition of responding to the other. The latter effect involved both an increase in reacquisition of responding to a positive stimulus within reversals and an increase in recovery of responding to the previous negative stimulus between reversals. Improvements in performance of each group over the series of reversals were qualitatively similar to the two effects of length of training on each discrimination, and were analogous to effects obtained in other studies involving overtraining and successive reversals of simultaneous discriminations.  相似文献

The effectiveness of trial-and-error, graded-choice, and verbal-instruction procedures on the acquisition and maintenance of a two-choice simultaneous color discrimination in an intradimensional double-reversal learning situation was studied using 18 first-grade children. After acquiring a red-green discrimination during one 70-trial session, the discriminative roles of the stimuli were reversed for 30 trials, followed by a second reversal for 30 trials. Children in the graded-choice and verbal-instruction groups acquired and maintained the discriminations with fewer errors than children who learned by trial and error. The importance of the results in terms of two-stage discrimination learning theories is pointed out and similarities between errorless learning and overtraining are discussed.  相似文献

Data from the analysis of the Overlearning Reversal Effect (ORE) noted in a simultaneous, visual discrimination task, and the lack of this effect in a position habit discrimination, led to the prediction that the ORE would not be noted in classical conditioning. It was further noted that very little work on discrimination learning had been reported in Pavlovian conditioning. The idea of schizokinesis, as observed by Gantt and others in classical conditioning, has been elaborated using the simple conditioning paradigm, and no data were available to test whether this same split would occur on a more complex level of conditioning, such as a discrimination task. To test these ideas, nine dogs were trained to a criterion of minimum discrimination, and then divided into three groups and given varying amounts of overtraining (OT). The discrimination task given the animal was to flex its paw during the CS+ signalling the onset of a brief shock. After the varying amounts of OT all groups were placed in extinction, followed by reversal training until each dog reached a criterion of minimum reversal. The results indicated 1) that the cardiac discrimination did not form before the motor discrimination; 2) extinction of differentiation was not significantly affected by the amount of OT given; 3) the mean level of responding in the motor system during extinction was highly correlated with the mean level of responding during the initial discrimination training; 4) OT had no effect on the speed of reversal of either the motor or the cardiac systems; 5) the speed of reversal learning in the motor system was highly correlated with the speed of initial discrimination.  相似文献

Two series of experiments investigated short-term visual recognition memory in pigeons following lesions of the hyperstriatal complex; the first series used a choice technique, the second, a single-key go/no go technique. The results of the two series agreed, first, in finding impaired performance in hyperstriatal birds at long but not at short inter-trial intervals, and, second, in obtaining no evidence of differential rates of decay of traces in hyperstriatal and control subjects. A final experiment confirmed that the hyperstriatal birds were, as expected from previous work, impaired on reversals of colour and position discriminations. It is tentatively suggested that deficits following hyperstriatal damage in both recognition and reversal performance may be understood as being the consequence of an increased susceptibility to frustrating events in hyperstriatal subjects.  相似文献

It has been suggested that, for some species, lesions of the superior colliculus affect visual discrimination learning, but only in certain conditions: (a) when problems are first learnt only after operation, or (b) when discriminanda require detailed scanning, or (c) when “approach” responses to the discriminanda are measured, rather than the response of actually touching them. These suggestions were examined in rats learning visual discriminations in a modified jumping-stand apparatus, after sustaining large lesions of the superior colliculus (and in some cases also of the pretectum). The lesions produced open-field hyperactivity and reduced exploration, indicating effective tectal damage, but the rats learnt a series of difficult discriminations in a door-push task as fast as normal rats, and they did not make more approach errors. Their main abnormality in the discrimination apparatus was that they looked less often between the stimulus doors before stepping across to one of them from the central platform. It is suggested that in rats, as in other animals, lesions of the superior colliculus disrupt the control of scanning head and eye movements; in rats, however, such disruption need not affect discrimination learning (at least in some kinds of apparatus), possibly because the retina of the rat has a relatively poorly developed area centralis.  相似文献
