Using the Hearth Hope Index, we describe the level of hopefulness among hospital patients and compare it to that reported
by community persons and family members in a surgical waiting room. We also correlate these results with depression and self-esteem
scores. As measured by these selected instruments, the results suggest that the level of hopefulness is not significantly
different among the three samples, that it is positively correlated with self-esteem and negatively associated with depression,
and that, among the demographic variables, only the respondent's age and frequency of attendance at worship significantly
influence hope scores. The results suggest that pastoral caregivers can encourage hopefulness among those under their care
by bolstering self-esteem and giving attention to depressive symptoms. They also suggest that those who need the most pastoral
support are younger adults with limited education. Pastoral caregivers can use these results, we think, to inform their work
in giving pastoral care. 相似文献

Current scientific interest in how the mind works creates a major challenge for psychoanalysis. The author proposes metapsychology as a bridging concept for an interdisciplinary dialogue. She presents a new framework on a microstructural level, within which different psychic representations are hierarchically organized. The flavour and pleasantness of food and drinks are affected by their colour, their texture or crunch, and even by the shape and weight of the plate or glass. But, can the colour of the bowl also affect the taste of the food it contains? To answer this question we served popcorn in four different coloured bowls, and participants rated sweetness, saltiness, and overall liking. The sweet popcorn, in addition to being sweet, was perceived as saltier when eaten out of a coloured (as compared to a white) bowl, and vice versa for the salty popcorn. These results demonstrate that colour in bowl design can be used to elicit perceptions of sweetness and saltiness in real foods. 相似文献

Rats were required to earn their food in a large room having nine boxes placed in it, each of which contained food buried in sand. In different phases of the experiment the amount of time allowed for foraging, the amount of food available in each food patch, and the location of the different available amounts were varied. The rats exhaustively sampled all patches each session but seemed to have fairly strong preferences for certain locations over others. If position preferences were for patches containing small amounts of food, the sensitivity to amount available was increased so that when location was compensated for, a pattern of optimal foraging was evident. The importance of environmental constraints in producing optimal behavior and the relation of the observed behavior to laboratory findings are discussed. 相似文献

g is a highly general capability for processing complex information of any type. This explains its great value in predicting job performance. Complexity is the major distinction among jobs, which explains why g is more important further up the occupational hierarchy. The predictive validities of g are moderated by the criteria and other predictors considered in selection research, but the resulting gradients of g's effects are systematic. The pattern provides personnel psychologists a road map for how to design better selection batteries. Despite much literature on the meaning and impact of g, there nonetheless remains an aura of mystery about where and why g cognitive tests might be useful in selection. The aura of mystery encourages false beliefs and false hopes about how we might reduce disparate impact in employee selection. It is also used to justify new testing techniques whose major effect, witting or not, is to reduce the validity of selection in the service of racial goals. 相似文献

The primary contribution of feminism to bioethics is to note how imbalances of power in the sex-gender system play themselves out in medical practice and in the theory surrounding that practice. I trace the ten-year history of feminist approaches to bioethics, arguing that while feminists have usefully critiqued medicine's biases in favor of men, they have unmasked sexism primarily in the arena of women's reproductive health, leaving other areas of health care sorely in need of feminist scrutiny. I note as well that feminist bioethicists have contributed very little to bioethical theory. In the second part of the paper I suggest two future directions for feminist bioethics. The first is to expand its critique of gender bias beyond reproductive medicine, devoting attention to the same issues raised by advances in biomedical technology as are taken up by mainstream bioethicists. The second is to develop bioethical theory that is more responsive than are mainstream moral theories to the social practices that subordinate women and minority groups. 相似文献

This study takes an interest in instructions and instructed actions in the context of manual skills. The analysis focuses
on a video recorded episode where a teacher demonstrates how to crochet chain stitches, requests a group of students to reproduce
her actions, and then repeatedly corrects the attempts of one of the students. The initial request, and the students’ responses
to it, could be seen as preliminary to the series of corrective sequences that come next: the request and the following attempts
make it possible for the teacher to launch instructional sequences specifically designed and addressed to the students who
need further guidance. In the interaction between the teacher and the novice student, the reasoned character of the instructed
actions is not explained so much as installed and tuned. The materiality of the project makes it possible for the two parties
to methodically and meticulously adjust their actions in accordance with each other, and towards the gradual realization of
the aimed-for results. In connection to this, a number of issues pertaining to the reproducibility and recognizability of
manual skills are raised: how instructions-in-interaction orient towards the progression of the skill rather than the interaction
itself; how attempts by and mistakes of the instructed party provide grounds for further instruction; and, consequently, how
instructions in the form of corrections build on the instructor’s continuous assessments of the instructed actions. 相似文献

In contrast to Jean-Francois Lyotard’s classic warning, postmodern society in the United States seems increasingly influenced by metanarratives—religious metanarratives. This article examines the implications of this religious resurgence for educational researchers. It offers a competing analysis of the postmodern that draws on Harold Bloom, Slavoj ŽiŽek and others to identify the gnostic elements in contemporary religiosity, both in Europe and the United States. This competing reading of postmodern religiosity suggests a reframing of Lyotard’s paralogy—research that searches for instabilities in the framework of knowledge. It has been suggested that the primary issue in considerations of validity today is the discrepancy between currently accepted theory and the practice of validation. The reason for this discrepancy may be that although considerable discussion has taken place in educational measurement and psychometrics regarding changes in our conceptions of validity, that has not been the case more generally in the social and behavioral sciences. A group of high school students created a drawing of a circle using a device called the Drawing Machine. To describe their experiences, we propose an alternative to the idea that to master a tool one must create a mental version of the tool. We suggest, instead, that as students change their relationships to a tool over time, their lived-in spaces change. Drawing on studies of practice, we explore the roles of past experience, planning, and communication in the development of students' lived-in spaces as they increase their competence with the tool and with the mathematics of drawing a circle. 相似文献
