The Bourdon illusion is the apparent inward bending of straight, collinear edges in a solid figure consisting of two elongated triangles meeting at their apexes. This effect was investigated in five experiments. In the first and third experiments, it was shown that the apparent bending is greatest when the apical angles are about 12 deg and the axis of the figure is oriented at about 22 deg from the vertical. The second experiment was a control involving visual acuity for angular departures of two lines from collinearity and served as a basis of selection for subjects in Experiments 3, 4, and 5. Experiments 4 and 5 showed that the illusion occurs strongly in a solid (“filled in”) figure but is notably smaller in outline figures of the same size and shape. It tends to be negative in outline figures with boundaries formed by continuous and broken lines. The relationship between the Bourdon illusion and the “negative” Zöllner illusion is considered.  相似文献

Figure-ground organization involves the assignment of edges to a figural shape on one or the other side of each dividing edge. Established visual cues for edge assignment primarily concern relatively local rather than contextual factors. In the present article, we show that an assignment for a locally unbiased edge can be affected by an assignment of a remote contextual edge that has its own locally biased assignment. We find that such propagation of edge assignment from the biased remote context occurs only when the biased and unbiased edges are grouped. This new principle, whereby grouping constrains the propagation of figural edge assignment, emerges from both subjective reports and an objective short-term edge-matching task. It generalizes from moving displays involving grouping by common fate and collinearity, to static displays with grouping by similarity of edge-contrast polarity, or apparent occlusion. Our results identify a new contextual influence on edge assignment. They also identify a new mechanistic relation between grouping and figure-ground processes, whereby grouping between remote elements can constrain the propagation of edge assignment between those elements. Pigeons discriminate continuous versus discontinuous line segments   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Three experiments examined various facets of the perception of continuous and discontinuous line segments in pigeons. Pigeons were presented with 2 straight lines that were interrupted by a gap. In some instances, the lines were the same angle and were positioned so that they appeared (to human observers) to form a continuous line. In other instances, the lines were different angles or the same angle but spatially misaligned. The birds were trained to classify each stimulus as continuous or discontinuous using a go/no-go procedure. A series of tests followed in which the birds received novel discontinuous displays made up of familiar line segments, continuous and discontinuous stimuli made up of novel line segments (novel straight lines or curved lines), and familiar displays in which the gap was covered with a gray square. Results from the tests indicated that 2 of the 3 pigeons had learned a continuous-discontinuous categorization and that they appeared to use the relationship between the 2 line segments in discriminating the displays.  相似文献

We report a new angle illusion observed when viewing a real scene involving a straight road. The scene portrays two white lines which outline a traffic lane on a road and converge to a vanishing point. In experiment 1, observers estimated the angle created by these converging lines in this scene or in its image projected onto a screen. Results showed strong underestimation of the angle, ie over 50% for observations of both the real scene and its projected image. Experiment 2 assessed how depth cues in projected images influence the angle illusion. Results showed that this angle illusion disappeared when scene information surrounding convergent lines was removed. In addition, the illusion was attenuated with projection of an inverted scene image. These findings are interpreted in terms of a misadoption of depth information in the processing of angle perception in a flat image; in turn, this induces a massive angle illusion.  相似文献

The explanation of apparent misalignment in the Poggendorff figure, based on underestimation of the intertransversal distance, was investigated in two experiments. In Experiment 1, subjects judged the intertransversal distance in the traditional Poggendorff figure and two of its variants. The size of the acute angle and the intertransversal distance were manipulated. Half of the subjects made the judgments with the method used by Wilson and Pressey (1976) and the other half made their judgments with the method used by Greist-Bousquet and Schiffman (1981). The results indicated that perceived intertransversal distance was greater with the former method. In Experiment 2, subjects adjusted the transversals to apparent collinearity in the same displays as were used in Experiment 1. The collinearity judgments were transformed to allow comparison with the results of Experiment 1. Comparison of the collinearity judgments with the distance judgments indicated that they did not follow similar trends. For each Poggendorff variant, proportional distance judgments increased as the size of the acute angle increased, and decreased as the intertransversal distance increased. Collinearity judgments did not vary as a function of intertransversal distance. As the size of the acute angle increased, collinearity judgments increased for two of the Poggendorff variants but decreased for the third. It was concluded that the findings did not support the explanation of apparent misalignment based on underestimation of the intertransversal distance.  相似文献

Acute angles frequently are overestimated, an effect that has been attributed to lateral inhibitory mechanisms. It can be derived from such theories that lengthening the arms of an angle should either reduce or not affect its judged subtense. However, in Experiments 1 and 2, it was found that angles with longer arms were judged larger. In Experiment 3, direct measures of anglearm orientation indicated that orientation contrast does not increase with angle-arm length, that it decreases with distance from the angle vertex, and that these effects are not averaged along the entire length of the arm. It follows that inhibitory mechanisms alone cannot explain why longer armed angles appear larger or why angle arms appear straight rather than bowed. It is suggested that a distinction is required between the orientation and the angular domains and that the latter judgments depend, at least partially, on the space or area within an angle. The fact that angles appear unbowed may reflect the fact that perceived orientation differences occur along an angle’s arm only when matches are made to small segments of the arm.  相似文献

It has been reported that errors which occur in attempts to align the arms of two acute angles differ in size and direction from errors which occur when the angles are obtuse (Restle, 1969). Other experiments have qualified this conclusion, and it has been suggested that Restle’s result was dependent on the use of a forced-choice method with a dual-angle display (Day, 1973). Data are reported here on dot-to-line misalignments using staircase techniques both at the free end and at the vertex end of single acute or obtuse angles. The results essentially agree with Day’s method-of-adjustment results, thus implicating the display rather than the method as the cause of the original negative acute-angle effect. However, Day found no difference between the acute-angle effect and the parallelless Poggendorff illusion, while we did obtain a difference under some conditions. Consideration of the magnitudes and directions of errors at both ends of the angles’ arms gives pause to any possible accounts of the errors in terms of simple or single whole-of-line effects.  相似文献

A number of anomalies have been pointed out in opposition to attempts to account for the Poggendorff illusion in terms of the expansion of small or medium-sized acute angles. A principle under which these anomalies could be subsumed was proposed and subjected to experimental testing using simplified displays. The following theory emerged from these experiments. If a straight line (the pointer) is aligned with a do (the target) situated at the end of a second line (the induction line) and lying in a different orientation from the pointer, then (depending on the angle between pointer and induction line) the pointer will appear to be aligned with a point further along the induction line. The amount of misalignment varies inversely with increase in size, up to about 135 degrees, of the angle formed by the pointer with the induction line, after which there is no displacement attributable to the induction line. The effect appears not to be due to neural interaction. An explanation in terms of eye movement is discussed.  相似文献

Four versions of Poggendorff displays were compared: (1) the conventional display of a transversal interrupted by parallel lines, (2) a transversals-only display, (3) a virtual-contour display where the parallels were suggested (but not drawn) via “good continuation” and “c1osure, ” and (4) the profile display, a degraded version of the virtual-contour display that retained many of its borders but did not suggest parallels. Each display was drawn with transversal tilted at 45 and 51 deg from vertical. All displays produced significant illusions at both tilts. By comparison with the illusion magnitudes of the conventional display, the effects for the other displays were small. The outcome supports the existence of two salient illusion-producing factors: the necessity for actual contours to form the subtended angle and assimilation of the transversal toward O’s horizontal.  相似文献

Multiple spatial cues are utilized to orient with respect to the environment, but it remains unclear why feature (i.e., objects in the environment) and geometric (i.e., shape of the environment) cues are differentially influenced by enclosure size, and the extent to which local (i.e., wall lengths and corner angles) and global (i.e., principal axis of space) geometric cues are influenced by enclosure size. In the present study, we investigated the extent to which environmental size influenced the use of corner angle (i.e., a local geometric cue) and the principal axis of space (i.e., a global geometric cue) for reorientation. We developed an orientation task that allowed the manipulation of enclosure size during training and the isolation of the use of the principal axis of space during testing. Participants were trained to respond to a location in either a small or a large trapezoid-shaped enclosure uniquely specified by both local (i.e., wall lengths and corner angles) and global (i.e., principal axis of space) geometric cues. During testing, we presented both groups with a small and large rectangle (to assess the use of principal axis of space) and a small and large parallelogram (to asses relative use of corner angles and the principal axis of space when in conflict). Enclosure size influenced the relative use of corner angles but not of the principal axis of space. Results suggest that corner angles function like features and that changes in the use of feature cues are the source of the relative reliance on feature and geometric cues during changes of enclosure size.  相似文献

The effects of arm length, spatial separation between angles, size of angle, and practice on the degree of misalignment in a modified version of Morinaga’s illusion were assessed. Size of angle was manipulated between subjects (n=15/group), whereas arm length, spatial separation, and practice were varied within subjects. Results showed: (1) that as the length of the arm increased, the degree of illusion decreased; (2) that as spatial separation increased, the degree of illusion increased; and (3) an interaction between size of angle and practice. The results were related to Day et al.’s (1982) assimilation theory of Morinaga’s illusion.  相似文献

We investigated the role of transparency, perceptual grouping, and presentation time on perceived lightness. Both transparency and perceptual grouping have been found to result in assimilation effects, but only for ambiguous stimulus displays and with specific attentional instructions. By varying the presentation times of displays with two partly overlapping transparent E-shaped objects, we measured assimilation in unambiguous stimulus displays and without specific attentional instructions. The task was to judge which of two simultaneously presented E-shaped objects was darker. With unrestrained presentation times, if a transparency interpretation was possible, assimilation was not found. Inhibiting a transparency interpretation by occluding the local junctions between the two E-shaped objects, did lead to assimilation. With short presentation times, if a transparency interpretation was possible, assimilation was now also found. Thus, we conclude that, although transparency appears to enhance assimilation, with unambiguous stimulus displays and without specific attentional instructions, perceptual grouping is more important for assimilation to occur.  相似文献

Although Attneave (1954 Psychological Review 61 183 193) and Biederman (1987 Psychological Review 94 115-147) have argued that curved contour segments are most important in shape perception, Kennedy and Domander (1985 Perception 14 367-370) showed that fragmented object contours are better identifiable when straight segments are shown. We used the set of line drawings published by Snodgrass and Vanderwart (1980 Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory 6 174-215), to make outline versions that could be used to investigate this issue with a larger and more heterogeneous stimulus set. Fragments were placed either around the 'salient' points or around the midpoints (points midway between two salient points), creating curved versus relatively straight fragments when the original outline was fragmented (experiment 1), or angular and straight fragments when straight-line versions were fragmented (experiment 2). We manipulated fragment length in each experiment except the last one, in which we presented only selected points (experiment 3). While fragmented versions were on average more identifiable when straight fragments were shown, certain objects were more identifiable when the curved segments or the angles were shown. A tentative explanation of these results is presented in terms of an advantage for straight segments during grouping processes for outlines with high part salience, and an advantage for curved segments during matching processes for outlines with low part salience.  相似文献

One hundred twenty-eight 4-month-old infants were habituated to one of several displays that depicted two rod pieces above and below a box. The effects of common motion, background texture, and orientation of the rod pieces on infants' perception of unity of the partially occluded rod were examined. Infants who viewed displays in which the rod pieces were aligned and presented in front of a textured background, subsequently looked longer at a broken rod (two rod pieces separated by a gap) than at a complete rod, implying that the infants experienced the rod pieces as connected behind the box in the first display. Infants who viewed displays with no background texture, or displays in which the rod pieces were nonaligned but relatable (i.e., connected if extended behind the occluder), looked equally at the two posthabituation displays. Infants who viewed displays containing nonrelatable rod pieces looked longer at the complete rod, implying that nonrelatable edges specify disjoint objects to 4-month-olds. A threshold model, stipulating that perception of object unity is supported by multiple visual cues, is proposed to account for these results. Veridical perception of motion of display elements, depth ordering, and edge orientation are necessary, but not individually sufficient, to support young infants' perception of object unity.  相似文献

When the eyes move vertically across a jagged diamond, a local shift (LS) of edge discontinuities and a global shape distortion (GD) (ie expansion/contraction opposite to that expected by the aperture effect) are perceived. These phenomena cannot be accounted for by a local motion signals integration rule based either on the intersection of constraint lines or on the velocity vector summation. The threshold for GD perception and the salience of LS and GD (1 to 10 scale) were measured in two experiments by different methods and displays. In experiment 1 we induced GD through mimicking LS with a kinetic pattern constituted of a set of circular illusory apertures revealing drifting gratings. The point of subjective equality for compression/expansion was reached for gratings the linear extrapolations of which form an angle of 94.4 degrees. In experiment 2 observers followed a dot moving along the vertical elongation axis of a static jagged diamond (with 70 degrees or 90 degrees angles), varying in the shape (triangular, wave, square), frequency, and amplitude of edge discontinuities. GD scores were correlated with LS scores that were inversely related to frequency/amplitude ratios of triangular edge discontinuities. Data are partially accounted for by averaging neighbouring local motion-capture vectors. Results prove that there are strong interrelations between phenomena in which visual motion affects visual localisation and phenomena involving apparent deformation of global shape.  相似文献

Same-object bias occurs when tasks associated with processing a single object are faster than tasks associated with two objects. Over five experiments we assessed whether same-object bias is mediated by the collinearity of the targets. Participants decided whether two targets, presented either within a single object or across two objects, were the same or different. Results showed that same-object bias only occurred when targets appeared on the same straight line within the same object. When targets appeared in the same object but were separated by an angle or corner, within-object facilitation was eliminated or greatly reduced. In a final experiment, response times to two targets that were collinear but on separate objects were responded to faster than were noncollinear targets on the same object. This suggests that collinearity between targets mediates the effect found in this paradigm, at least to a greater extent than colour grouping.  相似文献

What speaks louder, false words or false action? Raters assessed the anxiety level of 10 actors portraying their actual anxiety level and simulated displays of high anxiety. Raters were required to base judgments on either video cues alone or audio cues alone. Findings indicate that false words speak louder than false action, with audio-based judgments generating greater judgmental error in both straight and dissembled anxiety conditions. Although raters expressed equal confidence in judgments based on either verbal or nonverbal cues, results indicated that verbal cues played a larger role in emotional deceit. Differences between real and simulated anxiety cues were delineated, suggesting ways of detecting emotional deception. Results were discussed in light of current thought regarding channel contribution in deception.  相似文献

The task was to position a dot to lie one line length beyond the vertex of an angle by mentally extending one line segment forming the angle (and later the other line segment). Eight angles, variously oriented, provided judgmental errors attributable to the size of the subtended angle and line orientation. Collinearity errors are consistent with the hypothesis that the sizes of all subtended angles are underestimated. Horizontal-vertical assimilation describes the line-orientation effect. The largest error component is associated with the interaction of the two independent variables. Judgmental errors were modeled by a set of theoretically meaningful additive terms. Modeling was facilitated by symmetry assumptions (associated with odd and even mathematical functions) about the absolute magnitude and sign of judgmental errors that lead to the comparison of judgments derived from "interesting pairs" of stimuli.  相似文献
