This paper identifies issues and techniques useful to psychologists interested in applied research for computer applications. Applied research includes guideline research, product development evaluation, and field trial evaluation. Suggestions for improved guideline research involve screening the problem to determine its potential usefulness and screening the design to make sure it involves sufficiently representative tasks, subjects, and materials for the desired generality. Product development evaluation requires techniques for testing users that are fast, flexible, and inexpensive, such as “user trials” of products in ergonomics and “user edits” for testing documentation. Field trials of office automation or videotex systems lead to decisions about further introduction of those systems. A methodology for planning the research component of field trials, “evaluation assessment,” provides a set of steps to use in deciding which design and measures should be collected.  相似文献

Objections to the use of assistive technologies (such as prostheses) in elite sports are generally raised when the technology in question is perceived to afford the user a potentially “unfair advantage,” when it is perceived as a threat to the purity of the sport, and/or when it is perceived as a precursor to a slippery slope toward undesirable changes in the sport. These objections rely on being able to quantify standards of “normal” within a sport so that changes attributed to the use of assistive technology can be judged as causing a significant deviation from some baseline standard. This holds athletes using assistive technologies accountable to standards that restrict their opportunities to achieve greatness, while athletes who do not use assistive technologies are able to push beyond the boundaries of these standards without moral scrutiny. This paper explores how constructions of fairness and “normality” impact athletes who use assistive technology to compete in a sporting venue traditionally populated with “able-bodied” competitors. It argues that the dynamic and obfuscated construction of “normal” standards in elite sports should move away from using body performance as the measuring stick of “normal,” toward alternate forms of constructing norms such as defining, quantifying, and regulating the mechanical actions that constitute the critical components of a sport. Though framed within the context of elite sports, this paper can be interpreted more broadly to consider problems with defining “normal” bodies in a society in which technologies are constantly changing our abilities and expectations of what normal means.  相似文献

We present a theory of conversation comprehension in which a line of the conversation is “understood” by relating it to one of seven possible “points”. We define these points, and present examples where it seems plausible that the failure to “get the point” would indeed constitute a failure to understand the conversation. We argue that the recognition of such points must proceed in both a top down and bottom up fashion, and thus is likely to be quite complicated. Finally, we see the processing of information in the conversation to be dependent upon which point classification the user decides upon.  相似文献

Abstract

Over the last few decades many social scientists have pointed to the importance of user participation in information system development (SD). In study A the opinions of 314 Dutch system developers on this issue were examined. The conclusion is that the majority rate the value of user participation highly. However, these data confront us with three important problems. First, we cannot be sure that the stated preferences of system developers are reflected in their actual behaviour. Second, system developers may give a different meaning to the concept “user participation” than social scientists. Third, “user participation” does not necessarily imply “user influence” on SD. Moreover, the empirical relationship between user participation and the effectiveness of SD remains unclear. In our opinion this can be attributed both to the multidimensional nature of the former concept and to the contingency of this relationship to the context of SD. Therefore, in study B, we developed a multidimensional contingency model to study the interaction among parties in SD instead of the study of user participation. In this explorative study no linear relationship between the effectiveness of SD and the interaction between users and system developers was found. Instead, effective SD seemed to require a fit between the context of SD and the interactions with and among users.  相似文献

SuperBetter is a family of interfaces including a browser-based game, an online forum, and a companion mobile application that collectively seek to “gamify” resilience, wellness, motivation, and mental health. Players register and use “gamified” components and content to address mental and physical health challenges and to pursue identified goals. The primary strength of the SuperBetter ecosystem is its innovative approach, drawing on gaming metaphors and the use of evidence-based strategies in both its design and provided content. Efforts in creating an engaging, playable system incentivizing users’ incremental steps towards larger goals are constrained by SuperBetter’s relative lack of structure and direction, limits to meaningful progress monitoring, its largely static content regardless of varied user goals, and broad concerns regarding the utility of the overall system. The program presents a potential model for the application of gaming techniques and design to the dissemination of clinically effective concepts to a larger consumer market, but presently lacks sufficient empirical support for claims of evidence-based effectiveness.  相似文献

Our aim to identify factors which support use or provide rejection for “regular” but non intensive Enterprise Social Network (ESN) users. From UTAUT model, we propose to adapt social context evaluation by fixing attention on professional stake and context. Our results show partial benefits for the tool in professional activity. Even if these results are able to explain user disaffection, it also questions ESN as the structuring artefact.  相似文献

Directional judgments are typically slower when relative location is described by the words “east” and “west” or “right” and “left” than when described by the words “north” and “south” or “up” and “down.” A series of experiments are reported that disentangle verbal from perceptual encoding explanations for right-left difficulty. Overall, our results support a verbal encoding explanation for right-left confusion in the adult. Experiments 1-3 demonstrate that in a response-differentiation task, it is response to the labels “north,” “east,” “south,” and “west” that is responsible for right-left confusion. In addition, Experiments 4-6 demonstrate that right-left difficulty in a mirror image discrimination task is contingent on the use of directional labels. (The data also suggest that it may be more difficult to deal with “up,” “down,” “left,” and “right” than with “north,” “south,” “east,” and “west”) The data are interpreted as inconsistent with a bilateral symmetry explanation for right-left confusion.  相似文献

In many major cities, bicycle usage is on the increase and cycling safety is becoming a critical issue. Most of the existing studies are based on police data which understate both single-bicycle accidents as well as cyclist victims. In France, an estimation based on a road trauma database reveals that cyclists are 8 times more likely to be injured per hour spent on the road compared to motorists. To give a full picture of cycling accidents, as well as to understand how cyclist behavior interacts with other factors in causing accidents, we surveyed all injured cyclists in the period 2009–2011, as identified in a medical database of road trauma victims in a French territorial “départment” (the Rhône, capital city Lyon).Using classification methods we build a typology of 17 recurring configurations of cycling collisions and single-bicycle accidents: 7 concern utilitarian riding (commuting…), 3 concern recreational riding and 7 concern cycling as a sporting activity. A Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) is then used to check the consistency of this typology, and to gain additional insight on road user behavior by projection of supplementary variables.External factors contributing to cycling accidents, such as “bad weather” (13%) or “riding at night” (14%), roadway configuration such as “cycling infrastructure” (16%) or “intersections” (25%), and cyclist behavior such as “alcohol consumption” (5%) or “speed” (25%) are discriminatory variables that interact in many accident configurations. This study shows how road user behavior-influences each step in the chain of events leading to an accident. In the discussion of study results, some recommendations are made to public authorities aimed at improving cyclist safety.  相似文献

Substance use is prevalent amongst Australians who have experienced homelessness, but the social impacts of using substances amongst this group are poorly understood. This study uses a relational and critical realist approach to understand the role of substance use on the social lives of people with lived experience of homelessness. A mixed‐methods design was used to explore this question and assess the experiences of people who have exited homelessness. Recruiting across services catering to marginalised populations, 110 participants completed a cross‐sectional survey. Findings showed substance use both socially connected and disconnected participants, and that attempting abstinence required participants to negotiate and alter their social networks. To participants, being a substance “user,” or “non‐user,” was a social identity that they actively negotiated to facilitate competing social, psychological and material/embodied needs. Participants chose to engage and not engage with others to craft a social identity they valued, which had the sometimes‐negative side‐effect of limiting potential relationships, leaving users feeling isolated from their non‐users and a continued imperative to keep using. The impacts of substance use on social networks were similar for currently and formerly homeless participants, suggesting transitioning into housing may not immediately prompt a reduction in substance use or influence from substance‐using peers. Interventions with substance users with lived experience of homelessness would benefit from taking a social identity approach that incorporates an understanding of the material/embodied aspects of addiction to provide a holistic model of care that best supports the relational needs of the client.  相似文献

This study concerns the acquisition of complex sentence structures in Finnish. Specifically, three simultaneous and sequential events were acted out with toys in an elicitation task, and the production of “and,” “and then,” “when,” and “after” were observed. There were 48 children in a cross-sectional design at the age levels 3, 4, 5, and 6 years. Immediately after the complex event was presented, the child was asked the initial request “What happened?” If the child did not produce the whole event spontaneously, she or he was prompted by “What else happened?” Finally, the prompted request “When did X?” was asked (X referring to the second action component of the event). The results showed that prompting better revealed the ability of the children, especially that of the younger ones, to use temporal conjunctions in complex sentences, as well as the delicate interplay of language skills and their flexible use.  相似文献

This study investigates the use of home brewed alcoholic beverages among adolescents in high schools in a rural community in South Africa. There is much concern about alcohol misuse among young people and very little information exists on alcohol produced by the informal liquor industry in South Africa. A total of 1600 high school students participated in the study. The prevalence rates for past year use of home brewed alcohol was 22.2%. There was association between home brewed alcohol use and correlates such as “lived in city”; “raised by both parents”; “repeating school year”; “poor scholastic progress”; “absenteeism” “getting into trouble”, “arguing with parents/friends”; “neglecting homework”; and “recreation/leisure”. The prevalence rates for home brewed alcoholic beverages use in this rural schools calls for more research that focuses on home brews which could lead to the development of appropriate health promotion intervention in schools.  相似文献

The need for common pedagogical and design features in courseware is discussed. A particularly useful feature would allow use of courseware in either of two “modes”: as an “electronic chalkboard” for the instructor who wishes to take advantage of the computer in a traditional lecture setting, or as an “electronic study guide” in which students interact individually with the programs. Development of programs using these two modes can be facilitated using Author-Assist, a set of routines and a program skeleton being developed by CONDUIT (1983). Author-Assist provides procedures for use of several types of automatic menu generation, automatic text formatting in “text ports,” mixed text and graphics, protected input routines, lowercase characters in text, automatic scaling of graphic displays using “graphports,” on-screen calculator functions, and a variety of other features.  相似文献

PACER comprises an Executive and associated routines that together provide the run-time facilities commonly needed by experiment control programs. Although the implementation is specific to a particular PDP-11 installation, the nature of the support provided is of more general interest. Simple experimental procedures are straightforwardly handled by direct program control of timing and of external apparatus, and by direct inspection of the states of input lines connected to such apparatus. For more complicated situations, where events may not occur in a strict sequence, it becomes more convenient to make use of priority interrupts to inititiate response to events. Tasks to be performed under interrupt control are coded by the user as special subroutines known as “Actions.” It is a feature of PACER that the user can arrange for the Executive to run Actions automatically at specified times. The main program is then able to carry out processing that it would not be able to undertake if it had to make repeated checks on the time.  相似文献

Utilizing ethnographic field observations as well as face-to-face interviews, this article explores nuances of identity management among a small, intimate group of indoor marijuana growers. Findings suggest that some who are involved in marijuana cultivation may have multiple, distinct deviant identities or “masks.” These “masks” are called on depending on the audience and situation that each participant is presented with. Further, we show that these growers have three deviant identities that must constantly be managed including, (a) marijuana user, (b) marijuana seller, and (c) marijuana grower. Finally, we present data demonstrating the importance of marijuana in the everyday lives of the participants.  相似文献

In Experiment I, a preschooler with language delays and unable to answer “my-your” questions was successfully trained to answer “my-your” questions when reinforced for modeling an adult's answers to questions about possessive pronouns. Despite acquisition of the expressive use of the possessive case, generalization probes under conditions of nonmodeling and nonreinforcement showed no transfer at the receptive and expressive levels. Modeling and reinforcement training procedures in Experiment II improved the receptive use of “my-your” performance, but generalization probes revealed no receptive transfer. These same procedures in Experiment III improved the expressive use of “his-her” answers and, this time, immediate generalization of training for “his-her” occurred at the expressive and receptive levels. To facilitate generalization from the expressive to the receptive level, special programming-for-generalization procedures were used, involving reduced rated of reinforcement during training (Experiment I) and intermixing training trails with generalization probe trails (Experiment II).  相似文献

Adi Da argues that no solutions currently proposed are sufficient to righten the present unsustainable trajectory of life on Earth, because there is no integrated approach to the ordering of society and use of the planet. The presumption of separateness—manifesting collectively as separate “tribes” vying for control—characterizes human affairs, rather than the prior (“a priori”) unity of existence. The struggle for dominance is the “stave in the wheels” of the Earth-system's inherent capacity to self-correct. A new institution, “the Global Cooperative Forum,” is proposed—invoked by “everybody-all-at-once” (a global populace awakened as a single force, capable of cooperatively effecting global change).  相似文献
