One of the most difficult issues with which clergy must deal is that of theodicy, the reconciliation of a good God with evil in this world. The case of L.R. is that of a good thirty-nine-year-old man dying of cancer. This paper examines the role of the clergy in working with the dying patient, traditional responses to the questions of theodicy, and a proposal for an adequate contemporary solution to the issue of theodicy. One key factor in caring for the dying is the mutual spiritual growth of the dying patient and the clergy care giver.  相似文献

The era of “digital literacy” raises the question of whether the meaning of reading interest may have changed. This study examined psycho-behavioral dimensions of reading interest as these relate to different reading modes and different purposes of reading. Findings show that reading interest is best represented by its subcomponents of psycho-behavioral dimensions. Higher-order factor structures indicate a general factor of reading interest at the third-order level and five second-order factors representing reading in print settings, online reading, social media reading, academic reading, and recreational reading. We conclude with implications for future research on the psychological meaning of reading.  相似文献

The article explores some of the congruencies of thought and resonances in phrasing in the work of Janet Erskine Stuart, John Henry Newman and Ludwig Wittgenstein. These three writers have in common their resistance to philosophers of religion who are preoccupied with proposing arguments for the existence of God and grounds for believing in God. They also share a belief in the importance of assent and that reason and faith cannot be easily separated; that faith is always there in the background. The article is concerned primarily with the interrelationship between reason and faith across human practices and the relevance to education and how we live our lives.  相似文献

The structural importance of absence for human development is considered crucial in psychoanalytic thinking. The necessary conflict between the principles of pleasure and reality is situated in the intersection of presence/absence, gratification/frustration. However, nowadays a physical encounter with an-Other always contains a tangible aspect of partial absence, when the person you are with is in potential simultaneous interaction with someone else, through the portable screen. The author argues that digital technology has a profound impact on our daily existence, where a central aspect is this displacement of the dimension of presence/absence. Certainly, a relationship between two people has always contained a third, but we may now be facing something qualitatively different. In a world of omnipresent connectedness, we are never completely alone and never completely together. This constant connectedness can be seen to cause a transformation of the third position, altering the structure of triangular space. Furthermore, the digital presence of the other has specific imaginary qualities, rather than symbolic, and the full implications of this are yet to be discovered. The author discusses these issues in relation to everyday social settings as well as symptoms presented in the consulting room.  相似文献

The interest to research spirituality in the classroom has been constant over the last decade. However, empirical research into classroom pedagogy and the lived experience of religious education has been scarce. This study describes a small-scale intervention that aimed to promote students’ spiritual reflection in Finnish upper secondary school RE classes by using stimulating tasks. One class (N?=?23) of upper secondary school students (16–18?years of age) participated in the study. Analysis of students’ responses after the silent reflection moments suggested that the tasks were successful in eliciting some level of spiritual reflection for most of the students. In this article, we describe the experiment and the content and nature of this reflection, as well as discuss the advantages and challenges of spiritually sensitive teaching methods in a classroom of heterogeneous worldviews.  相似文献

This study examined adult learners’ ability to engage in critical reflection concerning their own learning in a graduate-level online instructional technology course. The online course was facilitated through asynchronous discussions, and the course topic was about the design and delivery of distance education. The data for this study consisted of four critical reflection papers about students’ perception of their learning. The Periodic Reflection Tool, based on activity systems analysis, was introduced to participants as a guide for engaging in in-depth reflection about their learning process and completing their course assignment. After course completion and during data analysis, we applied instrumental learning and communicative learning theories to evaluate how participants used the tool to reflect on their personal learning in the course. At the conclusion of an analysis of their reflection statements, it was found that purposeful reflections guided by the Periodic Reflection Tool could help guide adult learners to reflect on many aspects of their learning and we suggest that the tool could be used to examine adults’ transition from traditional to online settings.  相似文献

This paper reports on research in the Warwick Religions and Education Research Unit (WRERU) at the University of Warwick regarding an educational programme, which is based on what are perceived to be universal values. The programme aims to contribute to the spiritual development of children in schools, which is one of the statutory requirements of mainstream school provision in England and Wales. The Sathya Sai Education in Human Values (SSEHV) offers material which seeks to promote ‘human values’. The paper explores what these values are and why they are perceived to be of a universal nature. The focus on values introduces spiritual dimensions which are examined with reference to the educational contexts in which they are conveyed. The contents of the programme and the development from its inception are described. The paper is based on ethnographic data collected in classrooms and other educational environments where the programme has found application.  相似文献

Co‐operative Bank Financial Advisers Ltd (CBFA) is a wholly‐owned subsidiary of the Co‐operative Bank plc. Established since 1972, it specialises in the provision of independent financial advice to personal and corporate customers across the financial services spectrum. Based in Stockport in the north‐west of the UK, CBFA conducts its business via a nationally‐based team of independent financial advisers (IFA), offering a bespoke service to customers at a mutually agreed time and location—usually bank premises, business premises or in the client's own home. In the late 1990s, CBFA faced a crisis. A number of marketplace challenges threatened the long‐term viability of its business. In this paper, one of the management team members describes how her organisation used its understanding of customer decision‐making—backed by good customer research—to regain its footing in a difficult and competitive marketplace. This survey investigates the role and views of NHS spiritual advisors across the United Kingdom on the provision of pastoral care for elderly people with mental health needs. The College of Health Care Chaplains provided a database, and questionnaires were sent to 405 registered NHS chaplains/spiritual advisors. The response rate was 59%. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were carried out. Spiritual advisors describe their working patterns and understanding of their roles within the modern NHS, and their observations of the level of NHS staff awareness of the importance of spiritual issues in the mental health care of older adults. They provide insights into possible negative and positive perceptions of their roles at a service level, and contribute suggestions of topics relevant to shared education between pastoral care and clinical services. This survey further highlights ethical and operational dimensions at the point of integration of the work of spiritual advisors and multidisciplinary teams.  相似文献

The Internet is the latest arena in which counseling services are available for a variety of issues. This study surveyed counselor education professionals about their perceptions regarding the use of online counseling to address various mental health issues including career counseling. It also examined their perceptions about 3 formats of online counseling: e‐mail, text‐based chat, and videoconferencing. Results indicated that counselor education professionals were open to the use of online counseling to address career issues. The implications for the practice of online career counseling and for the training of counselors are discussed.  相似文献
