Twenty-four pigeons learned a successive discrimination between 500 mmu (S+) and 574 mmu (S-). When tested in extinction, some birds received stimuli around S+, with no S- presentations. These birds showed a positive peak shift, with maximum responding not at 550 mmu, but displaced to 538 mmu and 544 mmu. Other birds were tested with stimuli around S-, with no S+ presentations. These birds showed a negative shift, with least responding not at 574 mmu, but at 586 mmu. Though the first group was tested around S+ and the second around S-, total responding between groups did not differ. When retested on the other half of the continuum, however, birds that had gone from the S+ half to the S- half responded fewer times than those that had gone from the S- half to the S+ half. In a second experiment, reducing stimulus spacing from 6 mmu to 2 mmu produced flatter gradients and decreased the amount of positive shift. In a third experiment, birds were tested across the whole continuum with stimuli presented in serial order. A sequence from 538 mmu to 586 mmu produced no responding after the first part of the session; a sequence from 586 mmu to 538 mmu produced responding throughout the session.  相似文献

Using horses, we investigated three aspects of the stimulus control of lever-pressing behavior: stimulus generalization, discrimination learning, and peak shift. Nine solid black circles, ranging in size from 0.5 in. to 4.5 in. (1.3 cm to 11.4 cm) served as stimuli. Each horse was shaped, using successive approximations, to press a rat lever with its lip in the presence of a positive stimulus, the 2.5-in. (6.4-cm) circle. Shaping proceeded quickly and was comparable to that of other laboratory organisms. After responding was maintained on a variable-interval 30-s schedule, stimulus generalization gradients were collected from 2 horses prior to discrimination training. During discrimination training, grain followed lever presses in the presence of a positive stimulus (a 2.5-in circle) and never followed lever presses in the presence of a negative stimulus (a 1.5-in. [3.8-cm] circle). Three horses met a criterion of zero responses to the negative stimulus in fewer than 15 sessions. Horses given stimulus generalization testing prior to discrimination training produced symmetrical gradients; horses given discrimination training prior to generalization testing produced asymmetrical gradients. The peak of these gradients shifted away from the negative stimulus. These results are consistent with discrimination, stimulus generalization, and peak-shift phenomena observed in other organisms.  相似文献

Before tests for click-frequency generalization, pigeons had been reinforced for keypecks during one click frequency (S+). Some Ss received S+ training only, whereas other Ss also received unreinforced (S?) trials, during which the clicks were either absent (Experiments 1-3) or presented at some other frequency (faster or slower than S+: Experiment 4). When training included S+ trials only, birds responded approximately equally to all generalization test frequencies (0.0 to 53.5 pulses/sec, pps). Most Ss that had received both S+ and S? training trials responded fastest not during S+ but during click frequencies even further away from S? along the click-frequency dimension (peak shift). Complex bimodal gradients were obtained after training with S+ (1.6 pps) vs S? (0.0 pps); maximal responding generally occurred near S+ and at approximately 14.2 pps. Among other factors, the “nonorthogonality” of click absence (0.0 pps) to the click dimension seems crucially involved in producing these complex effects.  相似文献

A tone ending with unavoidable electrical shock was periodically presented to pigeons while they pecked a key for food. A second group of birds was exposed to these tone-shock contingencies and also to a second tone which never ended with shock. The gradient of stimulus generalization following training to a single stimulus was symmetrical, whereas the gradient following discrimination training was asymmetrical, but there was no evidence of peak shift. During testing, suppression to all tones gradually extinguished and in both groups the slope of the gradient increased markedly. A second experiment with the discrimination birds revealed that free shock caused a recovery of the gradient, but the asymmetry persisted.  相似文献

The present experiment examined the effects of varying stimulus disparity and relative punisher frequencies on signal detection by humans. Participants were placed into one of two groups. Group 3 participants were presented with 1:3 and 3:1 punisher frequency ratios, while Group 11 participants were presented with 1:11 and 11:1 punisher frequency ratios. For both groups, stimulus disparity was varied across three levels (low, medium, high) for each punisher ratio. In all conditions, correct responses were intermittently reinforced (1:1 reinforcer frequency ratio). Participants were mostly biased away from the more punished alternative, with more extreme response biases found for Group 11 participants compared to Group 3. For both groups, estimates of discriminability increased systematically across the three disparity levels and were unaffected by the punisher ratios. Likewise, estimates of response bias and sensitivity to the punisher ratios were unaffected by changes in discriminability, supporting the assumption of parameter invariance in the Davison and Tustin (1978) model of signal detection. Overall, the present experiment found no relation between stimulus control and punisher control, and provided further evidence for similar but opposite effects of punishers to reinforcers in signal-detection procedures.  相似文献

Using a compound stimulus test procedure, these experiments found evidence for a narrower generalization of associative strength in excitation than in inhibition. They also found a narrower associative gradient with a more strongly conditioned excitatory stimulus, although this did not seem to account for the difference between exciters and inhibitors. In two experiments rats were trained on a simultaneous discrimination in a jumping stand. On each trial choice always lay between one stimulus (an obliquely striped object in Experiment I, and a plain grey object in Experiment II) and a second that varied from trial to trial. On half the trials this variable stimulus bore horizontal stripes (H) and on the remaining trials it bore vertical stripes (V). It was argued that the solution of this discrimination would be hindered if the animals tended to classify H and V apart (Bateson and Chantrey, 1972). It was found, however, that prior exposure to H and V in the home cage (which has been supposed to promote classifying apart) facilitated learning and that prior exposure to H and V in the apparatus itself (which might be thought to promote classifying together) hindered later learning. Possible alternative accounts for these exposure learning effects are discussed.  相似文献

The relation between performance during discriminative training and subsequently obtained measures of stimulus control was investigated. Pigeons served as experimental subjects. In the discriminative training phase, a single peck on the center key, transilluminated by a bright or dim white light, resulted in the onset of the side keys, one red and one green. If the center key was brightly lighted, a response on the red side key was correct. A response on the green side key was correct if the center key was dimly lighted. Correct responses were reinforced on independently arranged variable-interval schedules. Following discriminative training, tests of stimulus control were administered during which white light of 11 intensities was projected on the center key and responses on the red and green side keys recorded. The proportion of correct responses in the presence of a bright or dim center-key stimulus decreased with decreases in the frequency of reinforcement of correct red or correct green responses, respectively. The slopes of the stimulus control gradients were related to the extent of response bias during training. The greater the bias to respond on the green key, the flatter the gradient showing the proportion of green-key responses to each stimulus and the steeper the corresponding gradient of red-key responses.  相似文献

Four pigeons were exposed to a tandem variable-interval (VI) fixed-ratio (FR) schedule in the presence of a 50-pixel (about 15 mm) square or an 80-pixel (about 24 mm) square and to a tandem VI differential-reinforcement-of-low-rate (DRL) schedule when a second 80-pixel or 50-pixel square was present. The values of the VI and FR schedules were adjusted to equate reinforcement rates in the two tandem schedules. Following this, a square-size continuum generalization test was administered under a fixed-interval (FI) schedule or extinction. In the first testing session, response frequency was a graded function of the similarity of the test stimuli to the training stimuli for all pigeons. These systematic generalization gradients persisted longer under the FI schedule than under extinction.  相似文献
