Recent decreasing trend in U.S. juvenile delinquency attributable to changes in maternal age

Two documented associations, viz., a negative one between maternal age and externalizing behavior of the offspring and a positive one between externalizing behavior in childhood and the probability of later (juvenile) delinquency, lead to the prediction that cohort-changes in crime rate over the years are associated with the age of the mothers of these cohorts when the children were born. This prediction was tested by comparing U.S. crime figures between 1987 and 1997 with maternal age figures 17 years earlier (1970-1980). Both time series show a close resemblance. Although causality from two different time series cannot be asserted, the existence of such a relationship is made plausible. Two different hypotheses are presented about the possible nature of causality. Results may be of value for studies in crime epidemiology.     

Recent changes in sex-role ideology among divorced men and women: Some possible causes and implications

Data from two Virginia Slims Surveys of American Women (1974 and 1979) are analyzed to test the hypotheses that sex-role value differences between men and women are greater in the divorced population than among married adults and that those differences have increased in recent years. The hypotheses are generally supported, and implications are drawn for the explanation of remarriage probabilities of divorced men and women. The explanation of the growing gender gap among the divorced is linked to recent changes in the position of women in the general economic structure.Revised version of a paper presented at the 1983 annual meetings of the Southwestern Social Science Association, Houston, Texas.

Recent developments in psychiatric malpractice

Common issues of mental health liability are examined in relationship to recent legislative and case law. Matters of practical importance to practitioners including the applicability insurance coverage to punitive damage awards of arising from malpractice are addressed. Specific legal doctrines involving proof of liability, proximate cause and the standard of care are explored as they relate to mental health malpractice cases.     

Recent Developments in Close-Relationships Theory

A selective review of some recent theoretical developments in the field of close relationships is presented. We describe demographic developments reflecting flux in relationships and the family and what may be viewed as a revolution in gender relations and the family over the past three to four decades. Also reviewed are theories on the development, maintenance, and ending of relationships, as well as the “dark side" of closerelationships. We conclude that the close-relationships field is likely to continue to develop and prosper as people search for answers to daunting relationship problems.

Recent trends in cultural theories

Multiculturalism is probably the most important and most misunderstood psychological construct of this decade. This article identifies specific and uniquely valuable contributions of a multicultural perspective and demonstrates the importance of multicultural awareness training as a primary prevention strategy, directed toward preventing multicultural misunderstandings before they happen by training mental health providers to become more aware of their culturally learned assumptions and the contrasting cultural contexts of their clients. The development of recent multicultural theories will be reviewed to demonstrate how the definition of cultural theories have changed over time toward a broader and more complicated perspective. Finally practical applications of culture-centered theories will be reviewed through the presentation of a Cultural Grid for separating behaviors from expectations in each cultural context.
