By taking into account dissident/political and art historical interpretations of Soviet art, I analyze how polemics about
totalitarianism in the West, which generally corresponded with Cold War debates and Eastern European dissident thought, shaped the post-Soviet
evaluations of national artistic legacies. It is argued that the political relationship with the totalitarian past, like in
many post-socialist areas where the immediate past was subjected to radical re-evaluation, affected Lithuanian artists’ and
critics’ attitude towards local Soviet art. Because of an obvious lack of underground art in Soviet Lithuania, however, the
retrospective usage of political categories here became problematic. Especially in international representations, the complexities
of artists’ relationship with officialdom came to be routinely assigned to the phenomenon of non-conformism; this eventually
obfuscated the differences between the Lithuanian Soviet art context as somewhat different from the Russian case.

German dialect geography developed, inter alia, as a means to compensate the shortcomings of the Young Grammarians’ approach
to language. In contrast to the latter, it was conceived of to be a sociolinguistic project, constituting thereby one link
between the development of Soviet and German linguistics. The article tries to answer such questions as who initially participated
in transferring ideas of German dialectology to the Soviet Union and what kind of motivations underlay those transfers. Combining
biographical facts with systematic aspects, the article surveys the filiations of some productive ideas with the help of archival
sources, i.e. letters of the Soviet scholars Dinges (1891–1932) and Viktor Žirmunskij (1891–1971). Finally, I try to single
out the elements in Žirmunskij dialect geography, which are specifically sociolinguistic.

I argue that the reflections on language in Adorno and Heidegger have their common root in a modernist problematic that dissected
experience into ordinary experience, and transfiguring experiences that are beyond the capacity for expression of our language.
I argue that Adorno’s solution to this problem is the more resolutely “modernist” one, in that Adorno is more rigorous about
preserving the distinction between what can be said, and what strives for expression in language. After outlining the definitive
statement of this problematic in Nietzsche’s early epistemological writings, I outline Heidegger’s solution and subsequently
Adorno’s critique of Heidegger. Finally, I argue that situating Adorno within the modernist problem of language and expression
is crucial for making sense of his philosophy as a form of critical theory.

We consider connections between number sense—the ability to judge number—and the interpretation of natural language quantifiers.
In particular, we present empirical evidence concerning the neuroanatomical underpinnings of number sense and quantifier interpretation.
We show, further, that impairment of number sense in patients can result in the impairment of the ability to interpret sentences
containing quantifiers. This result demonstrates that number sense supports some aspects of the language faculty.

This paper traces a lost genealogical connection between Charles S. Peirce’s later theory of signs and contemporary work in
the philosophy of language by John Perry. As is shown, despite some differences, both accounts offer what might be termed
a multi-level account of meaning. Moreover, it is claimed that by adopting a ‘Peircian turn’ in his theory, Perry might overcome
alleged shortcomings in his account of cognitive significance.

Sociologizing metaphysics and mind: A pragmatist point of view on the methodology of the social sciences 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
There are realist philosophers and social scientists who believe in the indispensability of social ontology. However, we argue
that certain pragmatist outlines for inquiry open more fruitful roads to empirical research than such ontologizing perspectives.
The pragmatist conceptual tools in a Darwinian vein—concepts like action, habit, coping and community—are in a particularly
stark contrast with, for instance, the Searlean and Chomskian metaphysics of human being. In particular, we bring Searle’s
realist philosophy of society and mind under critical survey in this paper and contrast it with a pragmatist, sociologizing
approach. Drawing from Dewey, James, and recent antirepresentationalism, we propose for research work a methodological relationalism
of its own kind, altogether detached from the ontologies of society and mind.

The author seeks to interpret the instrumental role of the concepts perestrojka, glasnost′, reform, revolution, socialist pluralism, and acceleration in the Soviet collapse. The semantics and pragmatics are related
to a wider intellectual and political context, and the conceptual perspective is used to help explain the progress of events.
The author argues that the common notion of the reform policy concepts as clichés is not valid.

investigation, and more specifically in discourse analysis. Claiming that argumentativity is a constitutive feature of discourse,
it endeavors to explore logos as both reason and language by analyzing patterns of reasoning in their discursive actualization. In this approach, the attempt
at influencing the audience’s representations is analyzed in the complexity of a discourse explored in its formal and socio-institutional
dimensions.

Historians must be sensitive to the alienness of the past. Insofar as they are concerned with their actors’ reasoning, they
must (through open-minded empirical investigation) find out how their actors thought, and not assume that they thought like us. This is familiar historiographical advice, but pushed
too far it can be brought to conflict with rather weak assumptions about what historians must presuppose if they are to interpret
their actors at all. The present paper sketches those assumptions, and argues that the influential ‘Strong Program’ in the
Sociology of Scientific Knowledge (SSK) falls foul of them. We do not argue from the correctness of the assumptions to the
falsity of SSK. Rather, we note the incompatibility, and then show how SSK theorists’ tendency to take interpretation for granted blinds them—and perhaps their readers—to the existence of the conflict.

Despite all that has been written about Russian historiography and how it profoundly changed after the Bolsheviks seized power
in 1917, very little is known about the historical tradition immediately before the Soviet era. This article attempts to begin
to address this issue by examining the major forces that shaped the historical and sociological thought of Nikolai Alesandrovich
Rozhkov (1868–1927). It argues that as Kliuchevskii’s successor and as the first professional historian to eventually present
a Marxist analysis of Russian history, Rozhkov was not only the most important historian at that time but one whose work best
represented the most significant transition in Russia’s historical tradition. The article concludes that an examination of
Rozhkov’s historical methodology offers a new interpretation of the origins of Soviet historiography.

Criticizing the works of “Western” specialists in semantics, Soviet academician M. M. Pokrovskij (1868–1942) comes to the
conclusion that social factors are essential for semantic evolution, while psychological factors constitute an intermediate
link between the “external” life of a society and the semantics of the corresponding language. This conception resembles the
general explanations of semantic evolution proposed by N. Ja. Marr (1864–1934). Nevertheless, despite a number of common points
in the semantic theories of these two researchers, Pokrovskij’s attitude towards Marr was negative: in particular, he disagreed
with the thesis of the chronological primacy of Marr’s discoveries in the domain of semantics. The article investigates why
Pokrovskij had for a long time constituted an intermediate link between Russian and “Western” “traditions” in the field of
semantics.

Miki Takasuna’s paper on “Proliferation of Western Methodological Thought in Psychology in Japan: Ways of Objectification”
offers many significant clues for reconsidering the history and unity of psychology. Its treatment of the reception of psychology
in Japan hints at the relevance of the models of the subject for psychology—including the allegedly “official” psychology.
The aim of this paper is to suggest such reconsideration, on the basis of a distinction between psychology-importing and psychology-exporting
countries, and provide a reflection on the cultural problems of assimilation by the latter of a discipline advanced by the
former. This perspective leads us to acknowledge the existence of a variety of psychological programs corresponding to the
transformation and modernization of different social realities. Also, an indication is offered of several possible levels
of analysis of such programs, which are seen to be related with the emergence of psychology as the science of modernity.

In this paper I address some related aspects of Merleau-Ponty’s unfinished texts, The Visible and the Invisible and The Prose of the World. The point of departure for my reading of these works is the sense of philosophical disillusionment which underlies and motivates
them, and which, I argue, leads Merleau-Ponty towards an engagement with art in general and with literature in particular.
I suggest that Merleau-Ponty’s emerging conception of ethics—premised on the paradox of a “universal singularity” and concerned
with the concrete experience of the individual subject, rather than with abstractions and formal categories—can best be articulated
through the formalist concept of “defamiliarization,” the fundamental performativity of all literature, and the dialogic relations
which, though inherent in all discourse, become most powerfully evident in the dynamics of reading.

Arthur C. Danto’s Analytical Philosophy of History has a Kantian ambition: to state the conditions that make historical knowledge possible and to show “the unhappy destiny”
that attends attempts to extend modes of representation beyond these conditions. Even though Danto’s book fails to achieve
this ambition, it succeeds in making a number of important—if neglected—suggestions in the course of its attempt. One concerns
the significance of the progressive tense for our thinking about human agency. Another concerns the way agency can impact
negatively on the possibility of foreknowledge.
