A very powerful, but inexpensive, advanced technology (16 MHz 80C188EB) experiment controller is described. It can be programmed in either a BASIC-like (ECBASIC) or an ALGOL-like (ECL) procedure specification language. It provides 1-msec resolution, optional transparent total data logging, and is designed to function as a remote peripheral processor in a network with virtually any computer acting as the network supervisor (e.g., IBM compatible or Macintosh). Each serial port on the host computer can support up to 10 simultaneous experiments. The various optional I/O modules provide for opto-isolated normally open or normally closed switch operation input, high current output, as well as D/A and A/D functions. Our I/O modules can also be plugged directly into an IBM PC parallel port by using a small adaptor board. In this way, the advantages of using ECBASIC or ECL to control experiments are available to researchers who wish to simply interface their host computer directly to the apparatus in order to minimize expense.  相似文献

An inexpensive CRT terminal controller/computer is described. The board integrates virtually any keyboard and CRT monitor into a work station with firmware-governed intelligence. The system is designed to fill the cost/functionality niche below the Apple microcomputer. It can be configured as a dumb or smart terminal (approximately $100 plus keyboard and CRT monitor), as a self-contained computer that runs ROM-based software such as a small BASIC or an assembler/disassembler fan additional $100 in chips), or as a word processor if aa audio cassette ($50) or dual digital cassettes with controller ($125) are added.  相似文献

The present paper describes the computer aspects of a reaction time experiment with couples. The hardware consists of two computers connected through a local area network. Issues that deal with the first PC include timing routines, screen control, mice data decoding, and synchronization of computer software—written in Assembler for a PC without hard disk—with information presented in a videotape. The second computer was used for data processing that was written in VBA. Although the system was created for a dedicated purpose, it is easily applicable to other environments.  相似文献

An inexpensive, professionally manufactured, digital I/O experiment control interface for any PC-compatible computer is described. It plugs into a standard printer port and provides 1-msec accuracy for up to 4 inputs and 22 outputs. It also allows experiment control procedures to be written in an easy-to-learn, easy-to-use Experiment Control language (ECBASIC). In addition to many instructions specifically designed to simplify behavioral research, ECBASIC provides for transparent collection and storage of event logs.  相似文献

The advantages of loosely coupled hierarchical computer networks for psychological research are discussed. Hardware methods for interconnecting computers are considered, and software communication protocols are detailed. A hierarchy of interconnected computers is formed: (1) large campus computer for statistical analyses, (2) medium scale computer for data concentration and program development, and (3) laboratory computers for data collection. An inexpensive circuit is described for EEG biofeedback or measurement. The circuit is designed to interface easily with most basic EEG machines. It taps the output from a single recording channel of the basic EEG instrument and provides the following for each EEG band (beta, alpha, theta, and delta): (a) very selective bandpass discrimination, (b) variable center frequency, (c) variable threshold at which feedback will be provided, or the measurement made, and (d) use with any biofeedback stimulus or measurement device that one wishes to switch contingent with S’s EEG rhythms.  相似文献

The pump consists of a modified disposable syringe that is capable of delivering liquids at rates which may be varied. A satisfactory device for measuring activity of rats or other small animals has been a difficult problem. Several types of instruments have given incorrect measurements or are prohibitively expensive. Photocells give the same readout to a bobbing head as for a walk over a considerable distance requiring only the interruption of a light beam. Other devices require rotation of wheels or complex integrating circuits which must be replicated or scanned and recorded for simultaneous activity measurement of many animals. The device reported here utilizes the tilting of balanced cages to actuate a single microswitch coupled to an impulse counter for each cage. An inexpensive sound-activated switch suitable for experiments measuring vocal-response times is described. This switch is comparable to many commercially produced switches in terms of its control over input sensitivity and response delay times, but it can be assembled for a fraction of the cost. Additionally, the present switch provides many features not found on standard commercial models such as a built-in speaker for monitoring the input signal and output jacks to facilitate simultaneous recording of this signal. Reliability estimates suggest that performance for this switch is comparable to that of a Scientific Prototype Model 761-G when both units are equated for frequency sensitivity and response delay time. In all, this switch offers a reliable and practical alternative to commercially produced devices for experiments in which the onset of an auditory signal must be accurately detected.  相似文献
