We investigated the ability to perceive the metric shape of elliptical cylinders. A large number of previous studies have shown that small perspective variations (< or =10 degrees) afforded by stereovision and by head movements fail to allow accurate perception of metric shape. If space perception is affine (Koenderink & van Doom, 1991), observers are unable to compare or relate lengths in depth to frontoparallel lengths (i.e., widths). Frontoparallel lengths can be perceived correctly, whereas lengths in depth generally are not. We measured reaches to evaluate shape perception and investigated whether larger perspective variations would allow accurate perception of shape. In Experiment 1, we replicated previous results showing poor perception with small perspective variations. In Experiment 2, we found that a 90 degrees continuous change in perspective, which swapped depth and width, allowed accurate perception of the depth/width aspect ratio. In Experiment 3, we found that discrete views differing by 90 degrees were insufficient to allow accurate perception of metric shape and that perception of a continuous perspective change was required. In Experiment 4, we investigated continuous perspective changes of 30 degrees, 45 degrees, 60 degrees, and 90 degrees and discovered that a 45 degrees change or greater allowed accurate perception of the aspect ratio and that less than this did not. In conclusion, we found that perception of metric shape is possible with continuous perspective transformations somewhat larger than those investigated in the substantial number of previous studies.  相似文献

A size-congruency effect in memory for visual shape   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In five experiments, visual shapes were shown at either a small or a large size for study in the learning phase of a recognition memory experiment. Later, in the test phase, recognition memory was tested in anold-new paradigm in which an equal number of new shapes were mixed at random with previously seen shapes. Half of theold shapes were shown at the same size as in the learning phase, whereas half were shown at the other size. In every experiment, shapes tested at the same size as shown in the learning phase were recognized more quickly and more accurately than shapes tested at a different size. This size-congruency effect was found for line drawings of natural objects and for unfamiliar shapes (i.e., blobs and stick figures). Furthermore, the magnitude of the size-congruency effect depended on the degree of discrepancy between the learning size and the test size. Together, the results suggest that visual shape memory can be sensitive to the size at which patterns are originally encoded, and that the speed and accuracy of recognition memory is influenced by the size of a shape.  相似文献

Gibson (1950a) has suggested that a gradient of retinal stimulation from an irregularly textured surface is used in the estimation of slant. There are several measures that could form such a gradient. Eight pictures of slanting surfaces were constructed with the aid of a computer. These consisted only of texture elements: in this case, outline circles and ellipses. Subjects studied pairs of pictures and indicated which had the greater tilt. By varying separately the gradients of element size and element density, it was possible to show that only the former contributed appreciably to the impression of slant. The experiment reported was designed to explore the relationship between gradient of texture and monocular slantshape perception. The effects of instructional set and order of slant and shape judgments were studied in interaction with four patterns differing in regularity of texture. Judgments of slant and shape were made by the same Ss for all patterns at 20°, 45°, 60°slant for slant judgments and 0°, 20°, 45°, 60° for width judgments. There were three instructional groups. Within each group one half of the Ss made slant judgments first, the other half shape judgments first. For all patterns, accurate perception of the slant of patterned material resulted in increased compensation in width judgments. Apparent width was found to be a function of pattern and also subject to instructional manipulation.  相似文献

While perceiving speech, people see mouth shapes that are systematically associated with sounds. In particular, a vertically stretched mouth produces a /woo/ sound, whereas a horizontally stretched mouth produces a /wee/ sound. We demonstrate that hearing these speech sounds alters how we see aspect ratio, a basic visual feature that contributes to perception of 3D space, objects and faces. Hearing a /woo/ sound increases the apparent vertical elongation of a shape, whereas hearing a /wee/ sound increases the apparent horizontal elongation. We further demonstrate that these sounds influence aspect ratio coding. Viewing and adapting to a tall (or flat) shape makes a subsequently presented symmetric shape appear flat (or tall). These aspect ratio aftereffects are enhanced when associated speech sounds are presented during the adaptation period, suggesting that the sounds influence visual population coding of aspect ratio. Taken together, these results extend previous demonstrations that visual information constrains auditory perception by showing the converse - speech sounds influence visual perception of a basic geometric feature.  相似文献

A model of form perception is proposed, based on the concept that shape properties can be assessed by the measurement of the dimensions of a form, taken at regular intervals over several directions in a grid of lines. These measurements are then collected into a frequency distribution, which serves as a translationally invariant summary of shape properties for purposes of perceptual judgment. The present article illustrates the basic approach using simple convex forms, with primary emphasis on grid properties and the plausibility of the model with respect to biological substrates.  相似文献

As one moves about a table, the projection of its shape on the retina varies enormously, yet the table's shape appears constant. The various retinal images of a single object are nearly congruent in projective geometry. To explain apparent constancy, standard theories of vision assume that the visual system has access to this projective congruence. We present four experiments that undermine this assumption (i.e., the projective thesis). The basic result is that observers' estimates of shape in a simple production task represent gross departures from correct projection, even when observers are given aids to fixation. We manipulate both observer sample and experimental procedure in an attempt to find a source of these persistent errors. Our present hypothesis is that observers lack the sensitivity or implicit knowledge of projective geometry that has been attributed to them.  相似文献

As a fundamental part of our daily lives, visual word processing has received much attention in the psychological literature. Despite the well established advantage of perceiving letters in a word or in a pseudoword over letters alone or in random sequences using accuracy, a comparable effect using response times has been elusive. Some researchers continue to question whether the advantage due to word context is perceptual. We use the capacity coefficient, a well established, response time based measure of efficiency to provide evidence of word processing as a particularly efficient perceptual process to complement those results from the accuracy domain.  相似文献
