This paper critically examines the volitional normative model of disease and its underlying nanotechnologic vision of medicine
both defended by Robert Freitas. Having provided an account of this vision, we explicate the highlight of the model, which
is a concept of disease based on individual values and preferences. The model’s normative positions are then critiqued based
on our argument that the epistemic basis of Freitas’s vision of nanotechnologic medicine and, by extension, of his volitional
normative model of disease is scientifically flawed. An ethical and social critique of the model is then conducted on the
basis of the model’s implicit ethical underpinnings. We argue that Freitas fails to justify the normativity of his model by
not addressing the ethical issues that permeate it, one of which is the question of responsibility regarding the development
of medical nanotechnology and the practice of new forms of medicine such as the one he envisions. We conclude that, due to
its radically individualistic position, the model implies an unjustified view of nanoethics and relegates this field of ethics
to the periphery of discussions of nanomedicine. 相似文献

SUMMARY There is a dearth of data in the literature on African-American couples. This omission probably reflects the assumption that interventions that are effective with one race are effective with others. This paper explores the use of metaphor as a tool for working with an underserved and neglected population. This article, with case illustrations, attempts to demonstrate that drug-abuse behavior can be understood more clearly in the light of family loyalties and unresolved family crises than from the perspective that drug abusers are social deviates.1 Drug abuse is viewed as symptomatic, as a signal that both drug abuser and his or her family are having difficulty in getting past a particular stage in the natural unfolding life cycle of a family. Treatment of drug abuse is seen primarily as helping the family to become "unstuck," thereby freeing the individual's and family's energy for the task of self-development and growth rather than expending it to maintain rigid patterns of interaction in an attempt to prevent change. 相似文献

This article outlines different aspects of dealing with metaphors within the cognitive coaching framework. It focuses on the
connection between metaphor, language and perception. Metaphors are an intimate part of most linguistic expressions. Since
coaching is a structured verbal interaction it involves the exchange of metaphors between a client and a coach. The cognitive
coaching literature concentrates mainly on techniques that help clients to pinpoint logical inconsistencies in their thinking.
Such techniques have proven to be very helpful, but not all clients have the ability to benefit from this traditional rational
disputing. In these situations the coach can make use of another technique, which still derives from cognitive principles.
The first part of the article focuses on the theoretical aspects of metaphors as linguistic expressions while the second part
addresses a specific client case. Suggestive techniques on how to restructure metaphors are described in connection with the
client case.

This article reviews some of the more prevalent metaphors used to describe the nature and character of the self. These metaphors include the unified and integrated selves as well as the postmodern perspectives of multiple selves. The authors contend that counselors have theories about the self whether implicit or explicit, and that these theories directly influence their practice. They further contend that it is beneficial for counselors and other helping professionals to take the time to clarify their beliefs and assumptions about the self and that metaphors are useful conceptual tools.
