The Flynn Effect (J. Flynn, 1987) refers to the apparent increases in intelligence quotient (IQ) observed over the past few decades. A related phenomenon is that the variance in test scores accounted for by Spearman's g (C. Spearman, 1904) varies according to IQ level. That is, g accounts for less variance in high IQ groups than in low IQ groups. Spearman termed this variant aspect of g the "law of diminishing returns." This study extends prior research on the Flynn Effect and the law of diminishing returns by examining changes in the statistical importance of Spearman's g that may accompany secular increases in IQ. Based on the standardization data from the United States versions of the Wechsler scales (i.e., Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scales of Intelligence, D. Wechsler, 1967; Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, D. Wechsler, 1949; Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, D. Wechsler, 1955), this study indicated that, in most cases, the statistical significance of Spearman's g has indeed declined over the past several years. A. R. Jensen (1998) suggested that the components of the Flynn Effect warrant special investigation. The present study addresses this issue, in part by analyzing the Verbal and Performance subscales of the Wechsler scales. We studied whether goal orientation affects the relationships that task difficulty and interest have with self-set goals.
Using a sample of 499 undergraduate students who listed grade goals for their classes, we employed Hierarchical Linear Modeling
to explain differences in the extent to which difficulty and interest related to goals. Higher goals were set for more interesting
and easier classes, and for individuals higher in mastery goal orientation and for those lower in performance-avoidance orientation
(at average levels of interest and difficulty). Furthermore, performance-approach and performance-avoidance orientations reduced
and strengthened (respectively) the effects of task difficulty on self-set goals, and the buffering effect of mastery orientation
was marginally significant.

Normal subjects and patients with right hemisphere lesions with or without signs of left unilateral neglect judged the length of a horizontal line presented on the left or on the right side of space. In half of the trials, the line was presented with a centrally located square or diamond, and subjects had to identify the central stimulus before performing the judgment of length. The presence of the central stimulus improved accuracy of performance in controls and in patients without neglect; neglect patients, however, produced more overestimations of left-sided lines when these was presented with a central stimulus than when the lines occurred in isolation. This finding underlines the importance of attentional factors in length estimates performed by neglect patients in their neglected space. 相似文献

Task complexity is critical in cognitive efficiency and fluid intelligence. To examine functional limits in task complexity, we examine the phenomenon of goal neglect, where participants with low fluid intelligence fail to follow task rules that they otherwise understand. Though neglect is known to increase with task complexity, here we show that – in contrast to previous accounts – the critical factor is not the total complexity of all task rules. Instead, when the space of task requirements can be divided into separate sub-parts, neglect is controlled by the complexity of each component part. The data also show that neglect develops and stabilizes over the first few performance trials, i.e. as instructions are first used to generate behaviour. In all complex behaviour, a critical process is combination of task events with retrieved task requirements to create focused attentional episodes dealing with each decision in turn. In large part, we suggest, fluid intelligence may reflect this process of converting complex requirements into effective attentional episodes. 相似文献

Goal orientation theories were used to generate predictions regarding the moderating effect of goal orientation profiles on
task performance growth trajectories. Participants were given multiple trials of practice on an air traffic control task.
Analyses were conducted using growth curve modeling. As expected, individuals with high performance-approach orientation improved
their task performance scores faster than their counterparts. The interaction between mastery and performance-avoid orientations
moderated the performance growth curve such that individuals with high mastery and low performance-avoid orientation improved
their performance at the fastest rate. The interaction between performance-approach and performance-avoid orientations also
moderated the performance growth curve. Individuals with low performance-approach and high performance-avoid orientation improved
their performance at the slowest rate. These findings contribute to theory and practice by elucidating how various combinations
of goal orientations influence the rate of skill acquisition.

Interference effects on task performance in conflict situations might reflect real limitations in inhibitory capabilities or failures to fully or consistently utilize such capabilities in executive control of task performance. We propose that useful clues regarding the actual cause of interference effects may be obtained from examination of their robustness within and between experimental conditions. We illustrate this approach for two major types of interference effects that have commonly been attributed to fundamental inhibitory limitations: Stroop-type interference and residual switch costs. We present results that indicate that these effects may not be unavoidable consequences of fundamental inhibitory limitations but may stem from goal neglect, i.e., failures to fully or effectively deploy inhibitory capabilities. These results indicate that, in addition to mean performance levels, variability of task performance may provide a valuable source of evidence regarding the actual cause of performance limitations or deficits in conflict situations. 相似文献

Three experiments with a total of 87 human observers revealed an upper-left spatial bias in the initial movement of gaze during visual search. The bias was present whether or not the explicit control of gaze was required for the task. This bias may be part of a search strategy that competed with the fixed-gaze parallel search strategy hypothesized by Durgin [Durgin, F. H. (2003). When the spatial probabilities of the search target were manipulated either in accord with or in opposition to the existing upper-left bias, two orthogonal factors of interference in the latency data were differentially affected. The two factors corresponded to two different forms of representation and search. Target probabilities consistent with the gaze bias encouraged opportunistic serial search (including gaze shifts), while symmetrically opposing target probabilities produced latency patterns more consistent with parallel search based on a sensory code. 相似文献

Previous research on basic information-processing tasks has suggested that there may be a dissociation between the underlying process determinants of task performance and associations with ability measures. This study investigates this dissociation in the context of a complex skill-learning task-an air traffic control simulation called TRACON. A battery of spatial, numerical, and perceptual speed ability tests were administered, along with extensive task practice. After practice, manipulations of task requirements and system consistency were introduced. Ability correlations with performance revealed a dissociation between some manipulations that have effects on performance means and the corresponding correlations with reference abilities. Implications for integrating experimental and differential approaches to explaining performance and possible avenues for improved selection measures are discussed. 相似文献

At the centenary of Spearman's seminal 1904 article, his general intelligence hypothesis remains one of the most influential in psychology. Less well known is the article's other hypothesis that there is "a correspondence between what may provisionally be called 'General Discrimination' and 'General Intelligence' which works out with great approximation to one or absoluteness" (Spearman, 1904, p. 284). Studies that do not find high correlations between psychometric intelligence and single sensory discrimination tests do not falsify this hypothesis. This study is the first directly to address Spearman's general intelligence-general sensory discrimination hypothesis. It attempts to replicate his findings with a similar sample of schoolchildren. In a well-fitting structural equation model of the data, general intelligence and general discrimination correlated .92. In a reanalysis of data published byActon and Schroeder (2001), general intelligence and general sensory ability correlated .68 in men and women. One hundred years after its conception, Spearman's other hypothesis achieves some confirmation. The association between general intelligence and general sensory ability remains to be replicated and explained. 相似文献

Adult humans were studied for improvements in their ability to segregate natural whole speech in background noise, in 6 test sessions spaced with a very wide range of inter-session interval (ISI) ranging from minutes to weeks apart so as to examine the effect of this parameter on initial (early) and late components of perceptual learning. Improvements were found even with spacings of 3 weeks between the punctate task sessions. All subjects showed similar total learning amounts but there were sex- and ISI-dependent differences in learning patterns, which we indexed by dividing the overall exponentially-decreasing learning pattern into an early phase between the first two sessions and a later phase between the second and sixth sessions. Males tested at all ISIs and females tested at short (2, 5 and 15 min) and long (1–21 days) ISIs showed small amounts of early-phase learning and large amounts of late-phase learning. However, females tested at intermediate (30 min and 1 h) ISIs showed only early learning, i.e., faster learning given that the total learning was the same. This sex- and ISI-specific deviant pattern could be changed to the standard pattern by interposing an overnight interruption that included sleep amongst test sessions. Thus, improvement in this complex auditory streaming and identification task can occur even with very brief and widely-spaced exposure, generally through a standard pattern of slower overall learning, but also through a sex- and ISI-specific deviant pattern of very rapid early learning which can be modulated by interposed delay unlike the standard pattern. 相似文献

The learning patterns of 3-ball cascade juggling from acquisition until automaticity were examined in 10 participants. On the basis of outcome measures derived from 26 practice sessions and 4 periodic probe sessions, the authors differentiated participants into 3 distinct learning types: a proficient group, an emerging group, and a single late learner. The proficient group was distinguished by how rapidly they learned and automatized performance. Most interesting, an inverse response cost (i.e., performance boost) on the secondary task was found in the majority of proficient group members during the dual-task condition. The present results are discussed in relation to the P. L. Ackerman model (1987, 1988) of complex skill acquisition as is the significance of the inverse response cost finding. 相似文献

In the conflict/control loop theory proposed by Botvinick, Braver, Barch, Carter, and Cohen (2001), conflict monitored in
a trial leads to an increase in cognitive control on the subsequent trial. The critical data pattern supporting this assertion
is the so-called Gratton effect—the decrease in flanker interference following incongruent trials—which was initially observed in the Eriksen flanker task.
Recently, however, the validity of the idea that this pattern supports a general conflict/control mechanism has been questioned
on the grounds that the Gratton effect is only observed with stimulus repetition. We present an experiment testing whether
the Gratton effect reflects a stimulus-independent increase in cognitive control or stimulus-specific repetition priming.
Although our results support the latter hypothesis, the priming effect is modulated by the congruency of the previous trial.
We discuss a new mechanism through which monitored conflict is used to exert executive control by modulating stimulus-response

One possible pathological mechanism underlying the rightward bisection error of right‐brain‐damaged patients with left spatial neglect is a leftward relaxation of the spatial representational medium. This view was originally based on the finding that patients with left neglect, required to extend horizontal segments, in order to double their original length, may exhibit a relative left overextension of the drawn lines ( Bisiach et al., 1994 ). We investigated this putative distortion of representational space using a 16 cm ‘line segmentation’ task (Experiment 1). Were the representation of space relaxed contralesionally, a progressive increase from right to left of the size of the drawn segments would be expected. Right‐brain‐damaged patients with left unilateral neglect (N=12) performed the segmentation task with no left versus right differences, as right‐brain‐damaged patients without neglect (N=8), and neurologically unimpaired control subjects (N=10), did. Experiments 2 and 3 explored the effects of sample length (1, 2, 4, and 8 cm), by which the 16 cm lines had to be segmented. Neglect patients produced longer left‐sided segments only for the 8 cm sample (i.e. half of the length of the segment). This set of experiments suggests an impairment in the segmentation task only with the larger (8 cm) sample, when a more global level of processing may be involved. Experiment 4 assessed this hypothesis by a ‘part/whole’ bisection task, using 8 cm lines, presented either embedded in a longer 16 cm line or in isolation. Neglect patients made a larger rightward bisection error when the segment was not embedded. The suggestion is made that the lateral distortion of the representation of space in neglect patients (i.e. a leftward relaxation of the spatial medium) concerns tasks where a more ‘global’ representation of the visual stimulus has to be set up. The different demands of the segmentation and bisection tasks are discussed. 相似文献

Recently, Widaman, Geary, Cormier, and Little (in press) offered a general componential model for simple and complex addition. In the present study, the generalizability of this model to very complex addition problems and to production task performance was tested. We investigated addition-production performance using a new research paradigm, the decision-production task. The paradigm was used to assess the reaction times of 16 adults to 100 single-digit addition problems (Experiment 1) and to very complex three-digit addition problems (Experiment 2). Generally, the results give evidence for the basic assumptions of the Widaman et al. model. Some of the results, however, demonstrate that short-term memory load factors and strategy choices also have important effects on complex addition-production performance. Furthermore, the results of both experiments indicate that, in production tasks, the nature of the elementary search/compute process can be characterized as a memory-retrieval process and that the decision-production paradigm is a valuable alternative to the classical verbal production paradigm. 相似文献

In recent models of decision-making, cognitive scientists have examined the relationship between option generation and successful
performance. These models suggest that those who are successful at decision-making generate few courses of action and typically
choose the first, often best, option. Scientists working in the area of expert performance, on the other hand, have demonstrated
that the ability to generate and prioritize task-relevant options during situation assessment is associated with successful
performance. In the current study, we measured law enforcement officers’ performance and thinking in a simulated task environment
to examine the option generation strategies used during decision-making in a complex domain. The number of options generated
during assessment (i.e., making decisions about events in the environment) and intervention (i.e., making decisions about
personal courses of action) phases of decision-making interact to produce a successful outcome. The data are explained with
respect to the development of a situational representation and long-term working memory skills capable of supporting both
