The Man Who Fell to Earth

Abstract

This article examines the construction of alien visitations in The Man Who Fell to Earth and reflects theologically upon the implicit and explicit religious themes in the novel and film. Gerard Loughlin explores the christic identity of the central character, Newton, and the queering of his body. Loughlin offers this essay in memory of Michael Vasey.     

The wayte Method for Investigating self-perceptions

The Who-Are-You Technique of investigating self-perceptions was extended into past, future, and ideal dimensions by additionally asking subjects Who have you been, Who will you be, and Who would you like to be. Who-Are-You-Time-Extension (WAYTE) comparisons of 232 prisoners, 55 Army Neuropsychiatric specialists, 77 college men, and 67 college women were made for twelve scoring categories and for contentment across time. Patterns of differences were noted and the WAYTE method was viewed as having potential for further self-concept research.     

Intergroup Contact,Prejudicial Attitudes,and Policy Preferences: The Case of the U.S. Military’s “Don’t Ask,Don’t Tell” Policy

Data from 115,052 active United States military personnel were analyzed to explore links between contact with gay people and attitudes about repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Results showed that prejudice against homosexuals significantly mediated the association between contact and supporting repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”; quality of contact in the military was a stronger predictor than other measures of contact. Quality and quantity of contact interacted: more contact quantity had opposing statistical effects on policy attitudes for people experiencing high versus low quality contact. Findings are discussed in terms of contact theory, the association between intergroup attitudes and policy preferences, and practical implications for situations in which groups’ access to new positions or roles is limited, and hence contact opportunities are rare.     

Examining the Impact of Training on the Homosexual Conduct Policy for Military Personnel

The impact of training related to the Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Pursue policy on training outcomes of military personnel was examined with data from the Department of Defense Inspector General's Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Pursue Policy Survey of military personnel (N = 71,570). We hypothesized that training related to the Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Pursue policy would impact participant's reactions, learning and cognitive outcomes, and behavioral and organizational outcomes. Results indicate that individuals who reported having received training on the homosexual conduct policy perceived the policy to be more effective at preventing/reducing harassment; were more likely to feel free to report harassment complaints; reported greater levels of understating and were more knowledgeable of the policy; reported higher levels of intolerance of harassment; and reported that more actions had been take at their installation/ship to reduce and prevent harassment than individuals who had not received any training. Although the pattern of results was statistically significant, the magnitude of these effects were small (η ² = .001–.109). These findings highlight the continuing need to expand current efforts to reduce and curtail harassment based on perceived sexual orientation.

Photo-synthesis: Facilitating Goal Setting in Supervision Using Images and Creativity

ABSTRACT

One of the most important aspects of clinical supervision is goal-setting. In the early stages of supervision, supervisees may find it difficult to connect authentically with their supervisors due to the inherent power differential in supervision. Difficulty connecting may be exacerbated when students are attempting to set goals regarding their areas for growth. Based on literature reviewed on the counselor-client relationship, the authors posit that using images may increase vulnerability between supervisors and supervisees. Additionally, the authors introduce relational-cultural theory as a framework for connecting authentically through creative images. The authors present examples of using images in individual and group supervision, specifically employing The Coaching Game made by Points of You.

The tale of uncertain choices: inclusion versus exclusion

Abstract

This article investigates the effect of perceived uncertainty on two types of screening strategies – exclusion and inclusion. Results from five studies showed that perceived uncertainty increases the preference for exclusion strategy. Using both mediation and moderation methods, we find support for accuracy consideration as the driver underlying the effect of perceived uncertainty on screening strategy. Furthermore, we demonstrated a reversal of the relationship between perceived uncertainty and screening strategy by manipulating the consideration set size. While perceived uncertainty strengthened the preference for the exclusion strategy when forming smaller consideration sets, this relationship flipped when forming larger consideration sets. We also demonstrated the effects of perceived preference uncertainty on screening strategy over and above knowledge uncertainty, choice uncertainty, as well as dispositional attitude toward uncertainty. Finally, we demonstrated the generalisability of our results by analysing verbal protocol data from the TV game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

Only connect: Developmental issues from early to late life

Summary

This paper links aspects of early experience and developmental processes (especially the Oedipus Complex) to troubled states of mind, both in later life and, at length, in the mental predicament of the very elderly — especially in relation to confusion and dementia. The paper draws on psychoanalytic and observational literature, and also on infantile developmental research to trace the ways in which capacities more familiar in the care of infants and young children are especially relevant in extreme old age — eg an understanding of containment, reverie, projective identification, splitting and denial, etc. through a series of detailed observations from within a single family, the paper explores the ways in which psychoanalytic knowledge of early ‘childishness’ may contribute very immediately, even technically, both to an understanding of ‘second childishness’ (to draw on As You Like It) and to how to work therapeutically with these enfeebled states of mind.

Last scene of all, that ends this strange eventful history, Is second childishness and mere oblivion, Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.
