We describe a model for the regulation of fast, single-joint movements, based on the equilibrium-point hypothesis. Limb movement follows constant rate shifts of independently regulated neuromuscular variables. The independently regulated variables are tentatively identified as thresholds of a length sensitive reflex for each of the participating muscles. We use the model to predict EMG patterns associated with changes in the conditions of movement execution, specifically, changes in movement times, velocities, amplitudes, and moments of limb inertia. The approach provides a theoretical neural framework for the dual-strategy hypothesis, which considers certain movements to be results of one of two basic, speed-sensitive or speed-insensitive strategies. This model is advanced as an alternative to pattern-imposing models based on explicit regulation of timing and amplitudes of signals that are explicitly manifest in the EMG patterns.  相似文献

Several previous investigations have measured accelerating psychophysical functions for perceived force with exponents of about 1.7. Two halving and doubling experiments presented here imply a psychophysical function for perceived force with an exponent between 0.6 and 0.8. That is, more than a doubling of force was needed to double the sensation, and similarly for halving. In the first experiment, subjects squeezed rigid instrumented cylinders between the thumb and first two fingers of each hand. They generated and released a reference force with one hand, and then squeezed the opposite hand to produce a sensation magnitude equal to, twice that, or half that of the reference. An analysis using a model that accounted for compression bias yielded average psychophysical functions with exponents of 0.58 and 0.59 (nondominant and dominant hands, respectively). The second experiment was an attempt to replicate earlier results and to reconcile them with the first experiment by using a paradigm duplicated from a previous study. Subjects in the second experiment made unilateral halving and doubling judgments of handgrip while squeezing a hand dynamometer. Again, the halving and doubling judgments yielded decelerating functions with exponents of 0.75 and 0.80 (nondominant and dominant hands, respectively). Even though the results of the first two experiments contradict earlier investigations, they can be explained by an equilibrium model of motor control assuming that subjects halve and double the central motor command rather than the sensation of force. The force is simply the result of the mechanical equilibrium established between the load and the compliant effector (the hand). The predicted relationship between the motor command judgments, the compliance of the hand, and the resultant forces was confirmed in a third experiment in which the mechanical compliance of the three-finger pinch was measured by using a pneumatic manipulandum to apply force perturbations in a “do-notintervene” paradigm. The measured compliance characteristic was accelerating, just as predicted by the model, in order to produce a decelerating psychophysical function for “perceived force.” In this experiment, then, judgments of perceived force appear to be judgments of the central motor command.  相似文献

This article presents SERIF, a new model of eye movement control in reading that integrates an established stochastic model of saccade latencies (LATER; R. H. S. Carpenter, 1981) with a fundamental anatomical constraint on reading: the vertically split fovea and the initial projection of information in either visual field to the contralateral hemisphere. The novel features of the model are its simulation of saccade latencies as a race between two stochastic rise-to-threshold LATER units and its probabilistic selection of the target for the next saccade. The model generates simulated eye movement behavior that exhibits important characteristics of actual eye movements made during reading; specifically, simulations produce realistic saccade target distributions and replicate a number of critical reading phenomena, including the effects of word frequency on fixation durations, the inverted optimal viewing position effect, the trade-off between first and second fixation durations of refixated words, and the dependence of parafoveal preview benefit on eccentricity.  相似文献

This is the second of two articles presenting a joint analysis of the adaptation and consistency effects. The first article emphasized that these two effects are related, essentially reciprocal phenomena that can best be accounted for in terms of practice. This second article, through a language-based analysis of the reading material used in the study, extends the integration achieved in the first article by identifying linguistic stress as the major dimension through which the effect of practice finds expression.  相似文献

Cognitive architectures (CA) are an IA approach to implement computer systems with human-like behavior. Fundamental exhibited human capabilities include planning and decision-making. In that regard, numerous AI systems successfully exhibit human-like behavior but are limited to either achieving specific objectives or are restrained to too heavily constrained environments, which makes them unsuitable in the presence of unforeseen situations where autonomy is required. To try to alleviate the problem, we present a bio-inspired computational model to solve the autonomous navigation problem of a computational entity in a controlled context. This proposal is the result of the interaction between planning and decision-making, spatial attention and the motor cognitive functions. The proposed model is based on neuroscientific evidence concerning the involved cognitive functions and is part of a more general cognitive architecture. In the case study developed to validate our idea, we can see that the processes previously identified play an important role to accomplish spatial navigation. In the case study presented, an agent achieves the navigation over an unexplored maze from an initial to a final position successfully. The reunited results motivate us to continue improving our model considering attentional information to influence the agent’s motor behavior.  相似文献

Eye movement control during reading: II. Frequency of refixating a word   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
An analysis of over 40,000 eye fixations made by college students during reading indicates that the frequency of immediately refixating a word following an initial eye fixation on it varies with the location of that fixation. The refixation frequency is lowest near the center of the word, positively accelerating with distance from the center. The data are well fit by a parabolic function. Assuming that refixation frequency is related to the frequency of successful word identification, the observed curvilinear relation results naturally from models that postulate a linear decrease in visual information with retinal eccentricity. A single letter difference in fixation location in a word can make a sizeable difference in the likelihood of refixating that word. The effects of word length and cultural frequency on the frequency of refixating are also examined.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to establish training procedures and testing conditions that produce uniform and reliable swimming performance of rats in an automated swim alley. Data are given on the effect of water temperature and of platform rest interval on swimming speeds. In this system, rats will swim intermittently for as long as 24 h for a distance of more than 7 km.  相似文献

Unfamiliarity with movement may lead isolated chicks to respond aggressively when tested with live, moving conspecifics. This hypothesis was tested by comparing the number and locus of pecks by isolated chicks to a stationary or moving model of a chick, and to a live chick. In a second test of the hypothesis chicks that viewed a moving object during isolation and chicks isolated without movement were tested with a live con-specific and their number and locus of pecks were compared. Neither experiment supported the hypothesis. Movement alone failed to excite aggressive pecks and prior experience with movement failed to suppress aggressive pecks. In the first experiment imlated chicks treated the live testmate more aggressively than the moving or stationary model. In the second experiment aggressive pecking of chicks was unaffected by prior experience with movement, These fmdmgs do not support the hypothesis that movement excites aggression in isolated chicks. Nonetheless the results focus attention on the generally neglected problem of emotional and motivational states produced by isolation.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine how people form conceptualizations of other countries' deservingness for nonmilitary foreign aid. A factor analysis of 78 college students' ratings of 21 variables for their importance in determining whether another country is deserving of economic aid yielded appropriate variables for closer examination. In the second part of this study, a new group of 40 college students was asked to rate 96 stimulus countries (constructed by factorially varying the levels of six need, similarity, and effectiveness variables) on their deservingness for foreign aid. The results suggested that ratings of other countries' deservingness for foreign aid are based on perceived need, similarity, and effectiveness, with a multiplicative combination of the recipient's need and similarity playing a prominent role. The results are related to two other conceptions of altruism and helping behavior.  相似文献

We investigated adult age-differences in timing control of fast vs. slow repetitive movements using a dual-task approach. Twenty-two young (M = 24.23 yr) and 22 older adults (M = 66.64 yr) performed three cognitive tasks differing in working memory load and response production demands and they tapped series of 550-ms or 2100-ms target intervals. Single-task timing was comparable in both groups. Dual-task timing was characterized by shortening of produced intervals and increases in drift and variability. Dual-task costs for both cognitive and timing performances were pronounced at slower tapping tempos, an effect exacerbated in older adults. Our findings implicate attention and working memory processes as critical components of slow movement timing and sources of specific challenges thereof for older adults.  相似文献

This study examines previous explanations of democratic peace in light of sociocultural factors and foreign policy actions that influence public perceptions of another country. Two experiments assessed the effects of relevant sociocultural and foreign policy action cues on perception of the regime type of a target nation and on public approval of the use of force. The findings suggest that sociocultural cues affect regime perception. Moreover, perceived similarity of a target nation and foreign policy actions are significant determinants of the public approval of the use of force in addition to perceptions of regime type.  相似文献

Preferred and fast speed sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit (STS) tests are prevalent in literature, but biomechanical changes between the different speeds of STS have never been studied. Understanding differences between these STS techniques will better inform experimental design for research assessing functional ability in clinical populations. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of different speeds of STS transfers on lower body and trunk kinematics and kinetics in healthy adults. Nineteen healthy middle-aged and older adults participated in this study. Two different speeds of STS were tested: self-selected speed and fast speed (as quickly as possible). Ten Vicon cameras and two AMTI force platforms were used to collect three-dimensional kinematic and kinetic data. During sit-to-stand transfer, peak knee extension velocity and knee extension moment were significantly increased for the fast speed STS as compared to the preferred speed STS. During stand-to-sit transfer, peak knee extension moment and lower back moment were significantly increased while STS time was decreased for the fast speed STS as compared to the preferred speed STS. Our results indicate that the fast speed STS could be more challenging for participants compared to the preferred speed STS evidenced by greater knee and lower back joint movements. Therefore, fast STS tests should be reconsidered when testing middle-aged and older adults with chronic low back pain and knee joint problems.  相似文献

General features of a probability model for errors of classification are recapitulated as an introduction to particular cases and applications. Several models for dichotomous and nondichotomous systems are examined in sufficient detail to elaborate a procedure for dealing with any particular case. The systemO =f(T,E) has empirical reference where, as statistic or parameter, probability of occasional subclass membership is given by observation, and one seeks to recoverT andE values fromO. A procedure for relating models and data is described. Applications of the concepts and methods are illustrated for several areas of psychological research. With grateful acknowledgment to the Rockefeller Foundation; and to the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, Public Health Service, for N. Lack of conceptual clarity has hampered theory formation and research on superstitious, magical, and paranormal beliefs. This study offers a conceptual framework where these concepts are differentiated from other unfounded beliefs and defined identically as a confusion of core knowledge about physical, psychological, and biological phenomena. When testing this definition with questionnaire items (N = 239), the results showed that superstitious individuals accepted more violations of core ontological distinctions than skeptics did and that ontological confusions discriminated believers from skeptics better than intuitive thinking, analytical thinking, or emotional instability. The findings justify the present conceptualization of superstitious, magical, and paranormal beliefs, and offer new theoretical propositions for the familiar everyday beliefs that are yet scientifically so poorly understood.  相似文献

Listening to a tone changing unidirectionally in sound level causes an illusion of changing loudness in a steady tone afterward. This aftereffect may indicate channels for detecting the feature of change in sound level, which would primarily concern dynamic sound localization. Three subjects, one of whom was the author, participated in this study. The author predicted that opposite adaptation of the ears (the adapting stimulus is heard to move from one ear to the other) should lead to a movement aftereffect. This was not reported by the subjects. However, the subjects did report a changing-loudness aftereffect in a monaural test stimulus, and the characteristics of the changing-loudness aftereffect (such as its magnitude) were consistent with previous data, suggesting a two-stage channel hypothesis: Output from channels for several features, including sound-level change, simultaneously stimulate movement channels.  相似文献
