Performance and motivational deficits of helplessness: the role of motivational orientations 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The present study examined the hypothesis that the effect of failure feedback in producing learned helplessness would depend on the motivational orientation of a child. Extrinsically motivated children were predicted to exhibit performance decrement following a failure experience, whereas the opposite was predicted for intrinsically motivated children. In addition, success feedback was predicted to enhance subsequent performance only for the intrinsic group. Following success, failure, or no feedback on an activity reflecting spatial skills (an incomplete picture task), subjects' performance on an activity tapping different skills (i.e., anagrams) provided by a second experimenter served as the primary measure of helplessness. Subjects' intrinsic motivation in performing the incomplete picture task, a similar task (embedded figures) and a dissimilar task (dots-to-dots) was also examined. The results supported the predictions on both performance and intrinsic motivation measures. The results are discussed in terms of implications for learned helplessness as well as cognitive evaluation theories. 相似文献

This paper includes research comprised of field studies and laboratory experiments to examine our diathesis-stress model that students with an extrinsic motivational orientation given evaluative/controlling directives are at risk for maladaptive achievement patterns, including performance, cognitive, and emotional deficits of helplessness. The findings, using our multimethod approach, confirmed our assumptions and indicated that motivational orientation is a more reliable predictor of helplessness than either attributions or perceptions of competence. The pattern of data obtained across studies is discussed in light of other theoretical approaches to understanding achievement patterns in students. The research reported here was supported, in part, by Grant No. MN45566 from NIMH. College students periodically experience many challenges in pursuit of their educational goals. Such experiences can have
deleterious effects on subsequent motivation and performance when they are perceived as negative. Research shows that some
students who experience negative events are buffered against motivational deficits, whereas others are motivationally at-risk.
Several individual difference variables have been proposed to account for such diverse reactions. A longitudinal field study
that involved three phases was conducted to extend this research. Phase I examined the motivational buffering effects of academic
attributional style on students' performance, motivation, and emotions. Results indicated that attributional style related
to students' performance, motivation, and emotions. Specifically, students who routinely made unstable and controllable attributions
for negative academic events exhibited the greatest performance and motivation compared to students who typically made stable
and uncontrollable attributions. Phases II and III were designed to examine the remedial benefits of attributional retraining
for different attributional styles. Findings indicated that attributional retraining influenced motivation, emotions, and
course grade. These results were qualified by the interaction between attributional style, attributional retraining, and time.
Findings are discussed within Weiner's (1985, 1986) attribution theory.

Abstract This paper deals with the psychological processes that mediate between repeated, uncontrollable failure on one task and performance deficits on subsequent tasks. A model is presented that integrates Seligman's (1975) motivational and Kuhl's (1981) functional interpretation of performance deficits following failure. The central assumptions of this model were tested in a laboratory study with college students. In accordance with our model, repeated failure (1) increasingly led to task- and solution-irrelevant cognitive activities (state orientation, according to Kuhl) the more it was attributed to internal, stable, and global causes, and (2) led to an increment in effort the more it was attributed to unstable and specific causes. Furthermore, results indicated that the influence of failure on state orientation was partly mediated by the importance subjects attached to the failure, and that the performance on subsequent tasks was influenced by both the motivational (effort) and functional (state orientation) consequences of failure. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to apply two novel quantitative assessments of apraxia to issues surrounding the cognitive profile of individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) who are at increased risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In particular, it was wished to determine whether such quantitative assessment techniques can detect minor degrees of impairment at a stage in the putative disease process before apraxia has become clinically obvious. A total of 23 individuals with MCI and 75 healthy controls were assessed on two 3‐item sequential movement tasks involving either meaningful or meaningless actions. A traditional rating scale assessment of gesture‐to‐command was also administered. MCI patients took significantly longer than control subjects to complete the sequential movement tasks despite unimpaired performance on the traditional gesture production tasks. Furthermore, retrospective analyses revealed that, at the group level, only MCI patients who subsequently proceeded to a clinical diagnosis of AD were significantly slower than controls at the initial assessment. These findings provide the first evidence that the neuropsychological deficits associated with MCI may extend to the domain of praxic functions. Consequently, this work contributes to the growing literature questioning the clinical usefulness of the concept of MCI and the appropriateness of current diagnostic criteria for distinguishing this condition from mild AD. 相似文献

It has been proposed that the ability to make sense of other agents' behavior relies on the activation of internal mechanisms that map action perception onto action execution. In this study we explored the constraints on this ability introduced by eyeheight-scaled information in the optic array. Short and tall participants provided maximum overhead reaching judgments for themselves and another participant. Perceptual information was manipulated by changing the participants' optically specified eyeheight. Observers were modestly accurate in perceiving maximum overhead reach for themselves and for another actor whose action capabilities differed. Perceived maximum overhead reach increased for both self- and other-judgments when the perceiver's eyeheight was increased. The results suggest an important role of perceptual information that has gone unrecognized in existing accounts of action understanding and prediction. 相似文献

Numerous studies have found visual deficits associated with dyslexia. This has made it important to understand how these deficits may be related to reading difficulties. A widely held theory is that dyslexia is the result of a deficit in the magnocellular part of the visual system (earlier called the transient system). In support for this theory, the prevalence of magnocellular deficits has been reported to be high among dyslexic readers and very low among non-dyslexic ones. This creates the impression that in the population as a whole dyslexic individuals have magnocellular deficits and non-dyslexic individuals do not. However, we show that because the prevalence of dyslexia itself is low this need not be the case. On the basis of previously published data we have estimated the number of non-dyslexic and dyslexic individuals with magnocellular deficits. Our estimates indicate that there should be a large number of non-dyslexic individuals with magnocellular deficits. Paradoxically more individuals without dyslexia have magnocellular deficits than individuals with dyslexia. This poses a challenge to the view that dyslexia is the result of a magnocellular deficit. 相似文献

Colour, face, and visuospatial imagery abilities in low-vision individuals with visual field deficits
《Quarterly journal of experimental psychology (2006)》2013,66(10):1955-1970
This study investigates to what extent visual perception integrity is necessary for visual mental imagery. Sixteen low-vision participants with severe peripheral visual field loss, 16 with severe central field loss, 6 left brain-damaged patients with right homonymous hemianopia, 6 right brain-damaged patients with left homonymous hemianopia, and 16 normally sighted controls performed perceptual and imagery tasks using colours, faces, and spatial relationships. Results showed that (a) the perceptual and mental image>ry disorders vary according to the type of visual field loss, (b) hemianopics had no more difficulties imagining spatial stimuli in their contralesional hemispace than in their ipsilesional one, and (c) the only hemianopic participant to have perceptual and mental imagery impairments suffered from attentional deficits. Results suggest that (a) visual memory is not definitively established, but rather needs perceptual practice to be maintained, and (b) that visual mental imagery may involve some of the attentional–exploratory mechanisms that are employed in visual behaviour. 相似文献

The present study was designed to investigate the utility of Bandura's self-efficacy theory to the understanding and treatment of career indecision. More specifically, the study involved the development of a measure of self-efficacy expectations with regard to 50 tasks or behaviors required in career decision making and the examination of the relationships of career decision-making self-efficacy to several components of vocational indecision. A total of 346 subjects, 154 students attending a private liberal arts college and 193 students attending a large state university, were administered the measure of career decision-making self-efficacy expectations and the Career Decision Scale (Osipow, Carney, Winer, Yanico, & Koschier, Columbus, Ohio: Marathon Consulting and Press, 1980). In addition, Scholastic Aptitude Test verbal and math scores were obtained for the liberal arts students, and American College Test math and English subtest scores were obtained for the state university students. Results indicated first that college students in general express considerable confidence in their ability to complete the tasks necessary to make career decisions. In addition, however, the strength of students' career decision-making self-efficacy expectations was strongly and negatively related to overall levels of career indecision and was, in particular, related to the component of indecision described as a lack of structure and confidence with respect to career decisions. Relationships of career decision-making self-efficacy expectations to ability level were negligible. Based on the findings of this study it is suggested that the concept of career-related self-efficacy expectations provides a useful framework for the understanding, assessment, and treatment of at least some of the antecedents to vocational indecision. 相似文献

In this paper we articulate confirmation and disconfirmation as components in human motivation. We develop a theory of motivation on the basis of a model of human action and we explore aspects of confirmation and disconfirmation in the context of the meeting of dysphagic patients with their physicians. We distinguish four central elements in confirmation and disconfirmation and use these and the relations between them for the purpose of constructing a typology. Finally, on the basis of the results obtained we interpret a small volume of remarks reflecting the meaning field of some dysphagic patients in relation to their physicians. The underlying motive is to develop tools for understanding health care processes. The “SAUC-Confirmation-Model” and the theoretical framework in which it is embedded should be seen from that point of view. 相似文献
