Two experiments measured the apparent orientation (aftereffect) and the threshold for detection (masking) of a colored grating viewed by one eye after exposure to a colored grating to the same or the opposite eye (monoptic inspection) or after stimulation of one eye by color and the other eye by contours (dichoptic inspection). Under the monoptic condition, the color relationship between the inspection and test stimuli exerted control over the extent of aftereffect and masking when the two stimuli were viewed with the same eye, but not when they were seen with different eyes. Aftereffect and masking were nonselective to wavelength following dichoptic inspection, irrespective of whether the test stimulus was presented to the color-adapted or to the contour-adapted eye. The results support other claims that visual detectors with chromatic and spatial tuning have monocular specificity.  相似文献

Recording eye movement data with high quality is often a prerequisite for producing valid and replicable results and for drawing well-founded conclusions about the oculomotor system. Today, many aspects of data quality are often informally discussed among researchers but are very seldom measured, quantified, and reported. Here we systematically investigated how the calibration method, aspects of participants’ eye physiologies, the influences of recording time and gaze direction, and the experience of operators affect the quality of data recorded with a common tower-mounted, video-based eyetracker. We quantified accuracy, precision, and the amount of valid data, and found an increase in data quality when the participant indicated that he or she was looking at a calibration target, as compared to leaving this decision to the operator or the eyetracker software. Moreover, our results provide statistical evidence of how factors such as glasses, contact lenses, eye color, eyelashes, and mascara influence data quality. This method and the results provide eye movement researchers with an understanding of what is required to record high-quality data, as well as providing manufacturers with the knowledge to build better eyetrackers.  相似文献

Up to now, the potential of eye tracking in science as well as in everyday life has not been fully realized because of the high acquisition cost of trackers. Recently, manufacturers have introduced low-cost devices, preparing the way for wider use of this underutilized technology. As soon as scientists show independently of the manufacturers that low-cost devices are accurate enough for application and research, the real advent of eye trackers will have arrived. To facilitate this development, we propose a simple approach for comparing two eye trackers by adopting a method that psychologists have been practicing in diagnostics for decades: correlating constructs to show reliability and validity. In a laboratory study, we ran the newer, low-cost EyeTribe eye tracker and an established SensoMotoric Instruments eye tracker at the same time, positioning one above the other. This design allowed us to directly correlate the eye-tracking metrics of the two devices over time. The experiment was embedded in a research project on memory where 26 participants viewed pictures or words and had to make cognitive judgments afterwards. The outputs of both trackers, that is, the pupil size and point of regard, were highly correlated, as estimated in a mixed effects model. Furthermore, calibration quality explained a substantial amount of individual differences for gaze, but not pupil size. Since data quality is not compromised, we conclude that low-cost eye trackers, in many cases, may be reliable alternatives to established devices.  相似文献

The anatomical locus of the refractoriness of the N1-P2 wave of the visual vertex evoked potential is examined using the dichoptic viewing paradigm (Turvey, 1973). N1-P2 amplitude to the second stimulus of a pair delivered to the eye contralateral to the first stimulus is found to exhibit the same amplitude depression as a second stimulus delivered to the ipsilateral eye. A central locus for N1-P2 refractoriness is inferred from this result.  相似文献

This study investigated the role that visual tracking plays in coupling rhythmic limb movements to an environmental rhythm. Two experiments were conducted in which participants swung a hand-held pendulum while tracking an oscillating stimulus or while keeping their eyes fixed on a stationary location directly above an oscillating stimulus. It was expected that the participants' rhythmic movements would become entrained to the oscillating stimulus in both conditions but that visual tracking would strengthen this entrainment. Experiment 1 investigated the role of visual tracking in establishing unintentional entrainment. Experiment 2 investigated the role of visual tracking in intentional entrainment. As predicted, participants exhibited greater unintentional coordination and more stable intentional coordination when they tracked the stimulus. These findings highlight the importance of understanding the role of eye movements in environmental coordination.  相似文献

Reaction time was used to gauge the sensitivity of an eye during its dominant and suppressed phases of binocular rivalry. During dominance, performance was uniformly good in detecting both stimuli that were spatially identical to the suppressed stimulus and those that were different in spatial frequency. When suppressed eyes were tested, performance was poor when the stimulus was different from the dominating stimulus, but even worse when the test stimulus and the dominating stimulus were spatially identical. The results favor the view that suppression operates nonselectively on a monocular visual channel, prior to the point at which dichoptic pattern masking occurs.  相似文献

Age-related performance changes on a dichoptic viewing task were examined with twenty-five (25) individuals in a cross-sectional design. Using a double-report procedure, subjects were asked to identify two different consonant-vowel graphemes presented separately to the same foveal area of each eye (i.e., dichoptic stimulation). Stimuli were presented at stimulus-onset asynchronies (SOAs) ranging from 0 to 300 msec in 50-msec steps. Results indicated that the number of both-correct trials (i.e., correct reports of both stimuli in a dichoptic pair) significantly increased with age, while single-correct trials (a correct report of only one stimulus in the pair) significantly decreased with age. In addition, the shape of the masking functions indicated lagging stimuli were reported more accurately than leading stimuli at SOAs of 50–300 msec for all subjects. Younger subjects exhibited peak masking effects for synchronous presentations (0-msec SOA) while older individuals showed peak masking at SOAs of 50 msec. Results suggest developmental performance changes noted in processing visual information parallel, to a remarkable degree, those observed in processing auditory information.  相似文献

During a pursuit eye movement made in darkness across a small stationary stimulus, the stimulus is perceived as moving in the opposite direction to the eyes. This so-called Filehne illusion is usually explained by assuming that during pursuit eye movements the extraretinal signal (which informs the visual system about eye velocity so that retinal image motion can be interpreted) falls short. A study is reported in which the concept of an extraretinal signal is replaced by the concept of a reference signal, which serves to inform the visual system about the velocity of the retinae in space. Reference signals are evoked in response to eye movements, but also in response to any stimulation that may yield a sensation of self-motion, because during self-motion the retinae also move in space. Optokinetic stimulation should therefore affect reference signal size. To test this prediction the Filehne illusion was investigated with stimuli of different optokinetic potentials. As predicted, with briefly presented stimuli (no optokinetic potential) the usual illusion always occurred. With longer stimulus presentation times the magnitude of the illusion was reduced when the spatial frequency of the stimulus was reduced (increased optokinetic potential). At very low spatial frequencies (strongest optokinetic potential) the illusion was inverted. The significance of the conclusion, that reference signal size increases with increasing optokinetic stimulus potential, is discussed. It appears to explain many visual illusions, such as the movement aftereffect and center-surround induced motion, and it may bridge the gap between direct Gibsonian and indirect inferential theories of motion perception.  相似文献

The Eyelink Toolbox software supports the measurement of eye movements. The toolbox provides an interface between a high-level interpreted language (MATLAB), a visual display programming toolbox (Psychophysics Toolbox), and a video-based eyetracker (Eyelink). The Eyelink Toolbox enables experimenters to measure eye movements while simultaneously executing the stimulus presentation routines provided by the Psychophysics Toolbox. We propose a novel variant of the classification image paradigm that allows us to rapidly reveal strategies used by observers in visual search tasks. We make use of eye tracking, 1/f noise, and a grid-like stimulus ensemble and also introduce a new classification taxonomy that distinguishes between foveal and peripheral processes. We tested our method for 3 human observers and two simple shapes used as search targets. The classification images obtained show the efficacy of the proposed method by revealing the features used by the observers in as few as 200 trials. Using two control experiments, we evaluated the use of naturalistic 1/f noise with classification images, in comparison with the more commonly used white noise, and compared the performance of our technique with that of an earlier approach without a stimulus grid.  相似文献

A visual pattern embedded in noise is detected appreciably better when the stimulus complex contains interocular cues (dichoptic condition) than when such cues are absent (binoptic condition). In a recent study (F. Speranza, G. Moraglia, & B. A. Schneider, 1995) the authors showed that the relative difference between binoptic and dichoptic thresholds does not change with age. However, older adults showed higher binoptic and dichoptic thresholds, thus suggesting an age-related difficulty with degraded stimulation. In this article the authors first replicated these findings and proceeded next to investigating whether age-related changes in processing efficiency, additive internal noise, and the spatial frequency bandwidth of the detecting filters could account, separately or concurrently, for the elevated thresholds in noise exhibited by the older adults. Results indicate that this increase is not attributable to age-related changes in filter bandwidth or internal noise. Rather, the findings can be explained in terms of a decrease in processing efficiency with age.  相似文献

Eye movement analysis is an effective method for research on visual perception and cognition. However, recordings of eye movements present practical difficulties related to the cost of the recording devices and the programming of device controls for use in experiments. GazeParser is an open-source library for low-cost eye tracking and data analysis; it consists of a video-based eyetracker and libraries for data recording and analysis. The libraries are written in Python and can be used in conjunction with PsychoPy and VisionEgg experimental control libraries. Three eye movement experiments are reported on performance tests of GazeParser. These showed that the means and standard deviations for errors in sampling intervals were less than 1 ms. Spatial accuracy ranged from 0.7° to 1.2°, depending on participant. In gap/overlap tasks and antisaccade tasks, the latency and amplitude of the saccades detected by GazeParser agreed with those detected by a commercial eyetracker. These results showed that the GazeParser demonstrates adequate performance for use in psychological experiments.  相似文献

Two methods for objectively measuring eye tracking data quality are explored. The first method works by tricking the eye tracker to detect an abrupt change in the gaze position of an artificial eye that in actuality does not move. Such a device, referred to as an artificial saccade generator, is shown to be extremely useful for measuring the temporal accuracy and precision of eye tracking systems and for validating the latency to display change in gaze contingent display paradigms. The second method involves an artificial pupil that is mounted on a computer controlled moving platform. This device is designed to be able to provide the eye tracker with motion sequences that closely resemble biological eye movements. The main advantage of using artificial motion for testing eye tracking data quality is the fact that the spatiotemporal signal is fully specified in a manner independent of the eye tracker that is being evaluated and that nearly identical motion sequence can be reproduced multiple times with great precision. The results of the present study demonstrate that the equipment described has the potential to become an important tool in the comprehensive evaluation of data quality.  相似文献

Two experiments, involving seven conditions, explored the use of direct measures of visual persistence. In each, the subject was asked to judge if an intermittent stimulus appeared perceptually continuous, or whether it completely faded before the next presentation occurred. The first experiment showed that visual persistence was set at approximately 250 msec. for a recycling presentation of a circle in a tachistoscope; in another task employing a moving opaque slit passing back and forth over a circle, persistence times averaged 50 msec. longer. Reducing luminance by 2 log units increased persistence only slightly, though removing the adapting field increased it by over 100 msec. The second experiment, using the repeating circle, varied the duration of the stimulus, and compared monoptic with dichoptic presentations. Visual persistence was found to be independent of stimulus duration over a range of 4 to 200 msec., where all durations were above recognition threshold for the stimulus. Persistence was unaffected whether the stimulus was repeatedly presented in the same eye or alternated between eyes, strongly suggesting that the storage is central. Finally, a re-analysis of Dodwell and Engel's paper on stereopsis suggests that their effects can be adequately explained by visual persistence of the asynchronous stereo pairs, rather than a more complex fusion model. All of these results strongly support the use of visual persistence as a direct measure of short-term visual storage.  相似文献

Displays yielding edges visible at sites where the visual stimulus was homogeneous (subjective contours) as well as with edges defined by spatial discontinuities in luminance (real contours) were used to induce the tilt aftereffect. Under monoptic conditions, the aftereffect was larger when the inspection and test edges were shown in the same colored light than when they were shown in different colored lights. Under dichoptic conditions (display of inspection edges to one eye and test edges to the other eye), the aftereffect was reduced in size and it was no longer selective to the color relationship between the inspection and test stimuli. Similar results were obtained with subjective and real contours. In the recent literature, subjective contours have been treated as products of cognitive and inferential operations, whereas neural edge detectors have been implicated in the perception of real contours. The present data suggest, however, the need for caution in attributing the perception of real and subjective contours to fundamentally different processes.  相似文献

Tracking eye movements is being increasingly recognized as a valuable source of information about stimulus control. So far, however, eye‐tracking research has suffered from accessibility issues, with expensive hardware and closed‐source software. In this article we review Pupil©, an eye‐tracking platform developed by Pupil Labs and that combines open‐source software with low‐cost hardware components. We offer concrete recommendations about Pupil use in stimulus‐control research and we show how the software can be extended to automatize the analysis of gaze data. Finally, we present the results of a study of visual discrimination and conditioned reinforcement conducted with Pupil, establishing the usefulness of this platform as a research tool in behavior analysis.  相似文献

Subjects used eye movements to pursue a light target that moved from left to right with a velocity of 15 deg s-1. The stimulus was a sudden five-fold decrease in target intensity during the movement. The subject's task was to localize the stimulus relative to either a single stationary background point or the midpoint between two points (28 deg apart) placed 0.5 deg above the target path. The stimulus was usually mislocated in the direction of eye movement; the mislocation was affected by the spatial adjacency between background and stimulus. When an auditory, rather than a visual, stimulus was presented during tracking, target position at the time of stimulus presentation was visually mislocated in the direction opposite to that of eye movement. The effect of adjacency between background and target remained the same. The involvement of processes of subject-relative and object-relative visual perception is discussed.  相似文献

The effects of correct and transformed visual feedback on rhythmic unimanual visuo-motor tracking were examined, focusing on tracking performance (accuracy and stability) and visual search behavior. Twelve participants (reduced to 9 in the analyses) manually tracked an oscillating visual target signal in phase (by moving the hand in the same direction as the target signal) and in antiphase (by moving the hand in the opposite direction), while the frequency of the target signal was gradually increased to probe pattern stability. Besides a control condition without feedback, correct feedback (representing the actual hand movement) or mirrored feedback (representing the hand movement transformed by 180 degrees) were provided during tracking, resulting in either in-phase or antiphase visual motion of the target and feedback signal, depending on the tracking mode performed. The quality (accuracy and stability) of in-phase tracking was hardly affected by the two forms of feedback, whereas antiphase tracking clearly benefited from mirrored feedback but not from correct feedback. This finding extends previous results indicating that the performance of visuo-motor coordination tasks is aided by visual feedback manipulations resulting in coherently grouped (i.e., in-phase) visual motion structures. Further insights into visuo-motor tracking with and without feedback were garnered from the visual search patterns accompanying task performance. Smooth pursuit eye movements only occurred at lower oscillation frequencies and prevailed during in-phase tracking and when target and feedback signal moved in phase. At higher frequencies, point-of-gaze was fixated at a location that depended on the feedback provided and the resulting visual motion structures. During in-phase tracking the mirrored feedback was ignored, which explains why performance was not affected in this condition. Point-of-gaze fixations at one of the end-points were accompanied by reduced motor variability at this location, reflecting a form of visuo-motor anchoring that may support the pick up of discrete information as well as the control of hand movements to a desired location.  相似文献
