Kinetic occlusion, the progressive deletion or accretion of texture elements as one surface covers or uncovers another, has been shown to be an important source of information for determining depth order. In the present study, the importance of this information for 2-D contour perception was examined. In Experiment 1, subjects were asked to discriminate four different target shapes defined solely by kinetic occlusion. Discrimination increased with an increase in texture density and velocity, with density as the major factor. In Experiment 2, the targets were defined by static untextured regions as well as by kinetic occlusion. Overall, accuracy was similar to that found in Experiment 1, indicating that the presence of static information had little impact on accuracy. In Experiment 3, subjects were unable to discriminate among the four targets when presented with static versions of the displays used in Experiment 2. The results from these experiments indicate that kinetic occlusion can be used for discrimination of different 2-D shapes and that density has a more important role in determining accuracy than velocity.  相似文献

The goal of this research was to examine whether a denial of a prolonged occupation by the occupying society constitutes a meaningful sociopsychological barrier to resolving the conflict peacefully. We hypothesized that this perception will be associated with objections both to conflict resolution processes and to specific compromises intended to end the occupation. Furthermore, we hypothesized that the association between denial of the occupation and compromises will be partially mediated by denial of its costs, low levels of moral emotions, and closure to new information about the conflict. Taking the prolonged Israeli occupation as our case study, we used three nationwide representative polls of Jewish Israelis to test our hypotheses. The studies supported our hypotheses, pointing to the distinct role that the perception of prolonged occupation by the occupying society plays in peacefully ending this situation, and the psychological mechanisms underlying occupation denial as a barrier to conflict resolution.  相似文献

Spatial frequency manipulations have been shown to have significant utility in ascertaining the various types of information that might be important in object identification and recognition tasks. This utility suggests that, given some mapping between ranges of spatial frequencies and different types of psychological information, it should be possible to examine the roles of these different types of psychological information by way of spatial frequency manipulations. One potential problem, however, is that there is no well-specified, unambiguous mapping between the distinctions in the frequency domain and the distinctions in the informational domain. Three experiments provide tests of three general hypotheses regarding the ways in which different spatial frequencies might map to different information in facial perception and memory tasks: (1) the low-frequency dominance hypothesis, which proposes that low-frequency information should be superior (to high-frequency information) as a cue to perception and memory; (2) the distinct informational roles hypothesis, which holds that high spatial frequencies should carry featural information while low spatial frequencies should carry information about the configuration of those features; and (3) the task-dependent information hypothesis, which suggests that high-frequency information should be best suited to discrimination tasks while low-frequency information should be best suited for recognition tasks. Results generally contradict the first two of these hypotheses, while providing support for the third. Implications with regard to the various issues related to the mapping between spatial frequencies and the informational content of faces, as well as the need to consider important interactions among perceptual and memory processes, are discussed.  相似文献

It is well documented that changes in the physiological states of the perceiver–actor influence the perception of action capabilities. However, because experimental procedures of most studies involved a limitless availability for stimuli visual encoding and perceptual strategies, it remains difficult to adopt a single position among the large range of alternative interpretations for impaired perception. A reaching-to-grasp paradigm under breathing restriction was adapted from Graydon et al. (Cogn Emot 26:1301–1305, 2012) to standardize the time for encoding of stimuli information and narrowed the involvement of perceptual strategies. In the present study, we propose a highly controlled environment where the discrete information is presented during 300 ms, congruently with neurophysiological studies focused on visuomotor transformation. An underestimation of the perception of action capabilities is found under breath restriction, suggesting that 300 ms for stimuli encoding is sufficient to induce altered visuomotor brain transformations when limiting the involvement of perceptual strategies. This result suggests that such behavior could refer to an impaired brain potentiation of the perceptual occurrence, providing strong hypotheses on the brain dynamics of sensorimotor integration that underlie impaired perception of action capabilities in stressful situations.  相似文献

Although 4-month-olds perceive continuity of an object's trajectory through occlusion, little is known about the information specifying an occluding surface at this age. We investigated this in 3 experiments involving 84 participants. Testing the claim that 5-month-olds are unable to perceive the Kanizsa figure as an occluding surface (Csibra, 2001), we demonstrated that 4-month-olds perceived trajectory continuity behind this figure providing its horizontal extent was small. We demonstrated that the presence of visible occluding edges or occlusion of background was insufficient to specify an occluding surface but that their combination was sufficient. Thus, beyond object deletion and accretion, both visible occluding edges and occlusion of background are necessary for perception of occluding surfaces at this age.  相似文献

We form first impressions from faces despite warnings not to do so. Moreover, there is considerable agreement in our impressions, which carry significant social outcomes. Appearance matters because some facial qualities are so useful in guiding adaptive behavior that even a trace of those qualities can create an impression. Specifically, the qualities revealed by facial cues that characterize low fitness, babies, emotion, and identity are overgeneralized to people whose facial appearance resembles the unfit (anomalous face overgeneralization), babies (babyface overgeneralization), a particular emotion (emotion face overgeneralization), or a particular identity (familiar face overgeneralization). We review studies that support the overgeneralization hypotheses and recommend research that incorporates additional tenets of the ecological theory from which these hypotheses are derived: the contribution of dynamic and multi‐modal stimulus information to face perception; bidirectional relationships between behavior and face perception; perceptual learning mechanisms and social goals that sensitize perceivers to particular information in faces.  相似文献

The point of observation translates with eye movement because it is not coincident with the center of rotation in the eye: Ocular occlusion results. The amount of optical structure revealed by eye rotation depends on the distances of the occluding and occluded surfaces. I review studies showing that ocular occlusion is detectable beyond near space and functionally effective in providing information about the separation of surfaces in depth. After discussing the typicality of ocular occlusion in visual experience, I explore the implications for analyses of optical flow for an understanding of depth perception and the mission of the sensory apparatus, and for the notion of efference copy in vision.  相似文献

In a series of 3 experiments, the authors examined the ability of badminton players of different skill levels (12 experts and 12 nonexperts) to anticipate the direction of badminton strokes. Participants viewed either film or point-light displays under a range of temporal or spatial occlusion conditions. World-class players were able to consistently pick up useful predictive information from the advance (precontact) kinematics of both the lower body and the racquet when the motion of those features was presented in isolation, whereas recreational players' use of the same information depended on the concurrent presence of linked segments. Participants' information pickup closely matched key biomechanical changes in the movement pattern being viewed, although, contrary to a common-coding view of perception and action (e.g., W. Prinz, 1997), some important differences were evident between the characteristics of the experts' movement prediction and those of expert movement production.  相似文献

This article describes a new automated method for the controlled occlusion of vision during natural tasks. The method permits the time course of the presence or absence of visual information to be linked to identifiable events within the task of interest. An example application is presented in which the method is used to examine the ability of cricket batsmen to pick up useful information from the prerelease movement patterns of the opposing bowler. Two key events, separated by a consistent within-action time lag, were identified in the cricket bowling action sequence—namely, the penultimate foot strike prior to ball release (Event 1), and the subsequent moment of ball release (Event 2). Force-plate registration of Event 1 was then used as a trigger to facilitate automated occlusion of vision using liquid crystal occlusion goggles at time points relative to Event 2. Validation demonstrated that, compared with existing approaches that are based on manual triggering, this method of occlusion permitted considerable gains in temporal precision and a reduction in the number of unusable trials. A more efficient and accurate protocol to examine anticipation is produced, while preserving the important natural coupling between perception and action.  相似文献

Summary Perceptions tend often to be proportional to proximal stimuli with reduced conditions of observation and proportional to distal stimuli under multicue conditions. Two explanations of this phenomena are examined. One, termed the core context hypothesis, postulates that the response to the proximal stimulus (the core) is modified by distance information (the context). The second, termed invariance hypotheses, postulates an interaction between two or more perceptions, one of which is often perceived distance. In order for invariance hypotheses to be valid it is necessary that a perceived distance occur under reduced cues of distance. It is asserted that perceived distance under these conditions is supplied by observer tendencies termed the specific distance and equidistance tendency. Perceptual interactions occur in situations other than those relevent to invariance hypotheses and the evidence for perceptual interactions is discussed in relation to perceived motion, perceived depth from exocentric cues, the adjacency principle, and other phenomena. It is suggested that the analysis of many perceptions in terms of perceptual interactions is parsimonious in that the effect of the independent perception, e.g., perceived distance, upon the dependent perception, e.g., perceived size, motion, or depth, is the same regardless of the cues by which the particular value of the independent perception is achieved.Preparation of this chapter was supported by PHS research grant number MH 15651 from the National Institute of Mental Health and PHS research grant number NS 18883 from the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke.  相似文献

Moving phantom visibility was measured in two experiments where the global figure-ground and depth relations within phantom-inducing patterns were manipulated. The local inducing environment where the illusion occurred was identical for all patterns. Phantom visibility was significantly reduced when occlusion cues specified the phantom-inducing parts of a pattern as ground. These results suggest conflicting figure-ground and depth information interferes with the representation and perception of phantoms as figure regions.  相似文献

One can conceive of intuition as the preliminary perception of coherence. Since this requires holistic perception, it is hypothesized that underlying processing strategies are dependent on the possibility to obtain all relevant information at once. The present study used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to investigate neural mechanisms underlying intuitive coherence perception when semantic concepts are presented all together (simultaneously) or one after the other (sequentially). With simultaneous presentation, absolute activation increases in the left OFC when participants recognize coherence. With sequential presentation activation increases in the right OFC when participants conclude that there is no common associate between the words presented. Behavioral performance was similar in the two experiments. These results demonstrate that the way information is revealed over time changes the processing of intuitive coherence perception. We propose that such changes must be taken into account to disentangle the neural and behavioral mechanisms underlying different accounts of intuition and related phenomena.  相似文献

Continuous changes in spatially separated figures can evoke perception of subjective contours and figures in physically homogeneous space between them. This occurs when all of the interruptions in the objectively present patterns (inducing elements) can be seen as caused by a unitary figure partly occluding them. Two experiments demonstrated and explored this phenomenon. In both, displays were presented to subjects under three conditions. In one condition, stationary inducing elements were shown as they would be interrupted by a figure rotating in front of them. In another condition, the background and inducing elements rotated, with interruptions occurring as if a stationary figure were in front. In a third condition, observers were shown 10 static views taken from the figure-rotation sequence for each display. Subjects consistently perceived unitary central figures with well-defined forms and clear edges from pattern changes given by figure movement and background movement. As with static subjective figures, kinetic subjective figures appear in front of, partly occluding, the inducing elements. These percepts form rapidly, and they depend upon temporal relations rather than upon information present in momentary views. Subjects occasionally reported subjective edges or a central figure in the stationary displays in Experiment 1, but not at all in Experiment 2, in which guessing tendencies were reduced by more specific instructions. The existence of kinetic subjective contours suggests that the visual system readily utilizes relationships among occlusion events separated in space and time. The minimum conditions for contour perception require neither information all along an edge nor simultaneous specification of the edge at two or more places.  相似文献

The diffusion model developed by R. Ratcliff (1978, 1981, 1985, 1988) for 2-choice decisions was applied to data from 2 letter identification experiments. In the experiments, stimulus letters were displayed and then masked, and the stimulus onset asynchrony between letter and mask was manipulated to vary accuracy from near chance to near ceiling. A standard reaction time procedure was used in one experiment and a deadline procedure in the other. Two hypotheses about the effect of masking on the information provided to the decision process were contrasted: (a) The output of perception to the decision process varies with time, so that the information used by the decision process rises and falls, reflecting the stimulus onset and mask onset. (b) The output of perception to the decision is constant over time, reflecting information integrated over the time between the stimulus and mask onsets. The data were well fit by the diffusion model only with the assumption of constant information over time.  相似文献

The authors used a virtual environment to investigate visual control of reaching and monocular and binocular perception of egocentric distance, size, and shape. With binocular vision, the results suggested use of disparity matching. This was tested and confirmed in the virtual environment by eliminating other information about contact of hand and target. Elimination of occlusion of hand by target destabilized monocular but not binocular performance. Because the virtual environment entails accommodation of an image beyond reach, the authors predicted overestimation of egocentric distances in the virtual relative to actual environment. This was confirmed. The authors used -2 diopter glasses to reduce the focal distance in the virtual environment. Overestimates were reduced by half. The authors conclude that calibration of perception is required for accurate feedforward reaching and that disparity matching is optimal visual information for calibration.  相似文献
