In a series of 10 experiments, groups of Os judged the sweetness of 16 sugars. The results suggest that, for all sugars except mannose, the intensity of sweetness grows as a power function of concentration, with an exponent of about 1.3. The relative sweetness of sugars was determined using both molarity and per cent by weight. With both measures, sucrose and fructose were the sweetest sugars. The order of the remaining sugars in the sweetness hierarchy was partiy a function of the measure of concentration. The variability of the magnitude estimates of sweetness was roughly proportional to the stimulus concentration, supporting Weber’s law.  相似文献

There have been mixed results in studies investigating proportional reasoning in young children. The current study aimed to examine whether providing visual scaling cues and structuring the reasoning process can improve proportional reasoning in 5- to 6-year-old children. In a series of computerized tasks, children compared the sweetness of 2 mixtures. Each mixture was represented by a juice rectangle stacked on top of a water rectangle. Two rectangles shared the same width but were of same or different heights. The mixtures were scaled by either changing their widths or their heights. In Experiment 1, children’s performance was poor when judging equivalent proportions. In Experiment 2, the 2 mixtures were individually previewed to encourage individual estimation of each mixture and thereby allow participants to strategically reason about the relative proportions. Children performed significantly better than in Experiment 1. In Experiment 3, children explicitly rated the sweetness of each preview mixture. Performance did not improve relative to Experiment 2. Throughout all 3 experiments, children were more sensitive in detecting equivalence when scaling occurred along the width compared with the height, demonstrating the effectiveness of visual-spatial scaling cues. Together, these experiments suggested that visuospatial scaling cues and structuring the 2-step reasoning process using previews can improve 5- to 6-year-olds’ proportional reasoning with certain limitations.  相似文献

In two recent issues of Acta, the widely accepted view of Proffitt (2006), that ‘haptic’ measures of perceived geographical slant are generally accurate, and dissociated from explicit overestimates, came under intense scrutiny (Durgin, Hajnal, Li, Tonge, and Stigliani, 2010; 2011). Durgin and colleagues' challenge to this account centred on the claim that Proffitt's haptic’ measure of geographical slant, the palm-board, may be accidently accurate due to restricted movements available at the wrist. Two experiments reported here compare the accuracy of Proffitt's palm-board with an alternative measure of geographical slant perception, the Palm-Controlled Inclinometer (PCI), which allows participants to use wrist, elbow and shoulder movements to match slant with their hand. Participants (N = 320) made slant judgements using both measures, across five hills and five staircases with 32 participants for each stimulus angle (4.5°–31°). Results for the palm-board replicated those of Proffitt and co-workers, overestimation at shallow angles (≤ 14°), contrasted with underestimation at steeper angles (≥ 23°), whereas estimates made using the PCI had a greater degree of accuracy for steeper slopes. A follow-up experiment tested the accuracy of the palm-board and PCI for surfaces in near space to repeat the design of Durgin et al. (2010, experiment 1). Participants (N = 20) used the palm-board and PCI to judge the angle of slanted blocks (25°, 30°). As with traversable slopes, PCI judgements did not differ from the actual angle of the blocks whereas the palm-board measure underestimated. ‘Haptic’ measures of geographical slant perception can be accurate for relatively steep slopes, in both near and far space.  相似文献

Three studies were conducted to quantify perceptual changes that occur when sapid chemicals are tasted in mixture solutions. The primary effect when mixing sweetness (glucose or fructose) with salt (NaCl), sour (citric acid), or bitter (quinine sulfate) was to reduce the intensity of each taste in the mixture. The reduction was not equal for the two components, although the overall (total) taste intensity of the mixture appeared to be approximately 50% of the sum of the intensities of the unmixed components. Mixtures of sweet and salt developed an “unblended” or “clashing” taste, in which the components alternated in attempting to dominate the taste percept. Sweet mixed with either sour or bitter blended in almost all proportions. The “flavor” of sweetness in mixtures differed from that of simple sugar sweetness, suggesting that the presence of a second taste modified the qualitative aspect of sweetness. The magnitude of change in sweetness quality depended upon the sugar being rated, and upon the quality and intensity of the second, or modifying, taste.  相似文献

Four experiments designed to investigate a visual search task are reported. In each experiment, subjects searched for either a two-dimensional shape rotated in depth among frontal-parallel distractors or a frontal-parallel shape among distractors that were rotated in depth. The principal independent variable was search-set size. In addition, over the four experiments, a variety of spatial arrangements and two axes of rotation in depth were sampled. The chief aim of the experiments was to adduce evidence bearing on the attentional demands of searching for depth. The slopes of the reaction-time (RT) functions were taken as diagnostic. Experiments 1–3 exhibited positive slopes for the RT-set-size function. These slopes appear to be due to a conscious adoption of a serial search strategy by the subjects. When this tendency was suppressed by the procedures of Experiment 4, the slope of the RT-set-size functions did not differ significantly from zero. We conclude that, in agreement with the findings of other studies, slant-in-depth can be detected preattentively.  相似文献

Two experiments are reported in which the perceptual interactions between oral pungency, evoked by CO2, and the taste of each of four tastants--sucrose (sweet), quinine sulfate (bitter), sodium chloride (salty), and tartaric acid (sour)--were explored. In experiment 1 the effect of three concentrations of each tastant on the stimulus-response function for perceived oral pungency, in terms of both rate of change (slope) and relative position along the perceived pungency axis, was determined. In experiment 2 the effect of three concentrations of CO2 on the stimulus-response function for the perceived taste intensity of each tastant was examined. Results show that the characteristics of the mutual effects of tastant and pungent stimulus depend on the particular tastant employed. Sucrose sweetness and CO2 oral pungency have no mutual effect; sodium chloride saltiness or tartaric acid sourness and CO2 oral pungency show mutual enhancement; and quinine sulfate bitterness abates CO2 oral pungency, whereas CO2 has a double and opposite effect on quinine sulfate bitterness--at low concentrations of bitter tastant CO2 enhances bitterness, and at high concentrations of bitter tastant CO2 abates bitterness. It is suggested that the perceptual attributes of saltiness and sourness are closer, from a qualitative point of view, to oral pungency than are the attributes of bitterness and sweetness.  相似文献

Three experiments explored how sweetness metaphors affect individuals’ attitudes. The results indicated that sweetness metaphors led to positive responses to the target advertisement and the advertised product, both when the sweetness was actually experienced (Experiment 1) and when the sweetness experience was imagined (Experiment 2 and 3). In Experiment 1, participants who directly experienced a sweet taste evaluated a mineral water advertisement more positively than those who did not experience a sweet taste. Experiment 2 showed that an imagined sweet taste generated favorable attitudes toward the same targets as in Experiment 1. Results of Experiment 3, which used advertisements of various product categories, were similar to those of the previous two experiments, where both direct experience and mental imagination of sweetness were advantageous for forming favorable attitudes.  相似文献

In four experiments, groups of Os judged either the sweetness or the entire taste intensity of solutions of sucrose, cyclamate salts, cyclamate-saccharin mixtures, and sodium saccharin. The sensory functions obtained by magnitude estimation suggest that over the middle range of concentration the sweetness and intensity of the foregoing substances grow as power functions of concentration. As a first approximation, the exponents for sweetness and intensity are, respectively, 1.6 to 1.4 for sucrose, 1.0 to 0.8 for cyclamate salts, 0.6 to 0.85 for cyclamate-saccharin mixtures, and 0.3 to 0.6 for sodium saccharin.  相似文献

Subjects adjusted the path of moving stimuli to produce apparent slopes of 45 degrees with respect to horizontal. The stimulus was either a single moving dot or a vertical or horizontal bar. In separate experiments either the stimuli were tracked or fixation was maintained on a stationary fixation target positioned 8 deg to the right of the center of stimulus motion. In both experiments the selected path slopes were in general more horizontal than 45 degrees. This pattern indicates that subjects overestimate the vertical component of motion along an oblique path, and is interpreted as a manifestation of the spatial anisometropy generally termed the 'horizontal-vertical illusion'. Additionally, paths selected for horizontal bars were more vertical than those for vertical bars. This finding is interpreted in the context of a previous report of the influence of stimulus orientation on perceived velocity.  相似文献

In two experiments, different groups of subjects heard four musical selections and then estimated the duration of each selection. Some groups made retrospective time estimates while others made prospective estimates. In both experiments, analyses of the psychophysical relation between perceived and actual duration showed that the slopes of straight-line fits were flatter and accounted for a smaller proportion of the variance under retrospective as compared with prospective conditions. In addition, in experiment 1, retrospective subjects were less accurate in rank ordering the selections from longest to shortest. There was also a serial-order effect, with selections estimated longer when they occurred early in the sequence. In experiment 2 the slopes decreased as the selections in a series became longer. Both retrospective and prospective estimates also exhibited a context effect, in that estimates of a given selection were influenced by the relative durations of the other three selections in the series. The results on inaccurate retrospective judgments raise questions about prior research on stimulus factors and retrospective timing. However, similarities under retrospective and prospective conditions suggest that timing under these conditions, although different in some respects, reflects a similar process.  相似文献

Fusional limits for an RD (random-dot) stereogram with overall horizontal retinal disparity due to the temporalward pulling of its two constituent RD patterns beyond the divergence limits of the eyes have been determined by using an afterimage method. Two criteria for fusion were used, viz, the perception ofsingle local RD elements and the perception of stereoscopic depth in the “hidden” square of side 1.38 deg with 8-min relative horizontal disparity. The diplopia thresholds were found to be in the range of 0.15–0.3 deg, and hence do not exceed the “classical” upper limit of about 0.3 deg, which has been reported for elementary line stereograms. The stereoscopic limits were found to be in the range of 0.5–1.3 deg, which is compatible with the precision of patent stereopsis from double images which has been reported for elementary line stereograms. The results of the present third look at the experiments performed by Fender and Julesz (1967) suggest that there are no special neuronal processes raising the fusional limits for RD stereograms above those for elementary line stereograms. Previous claims that such special neuronal processes may occur seem to be based on an evaluation of fusional limits obtained with different criteria for fusion. It is further argued that the major hysteresis effect that has been observed for fusional limits for RD stereograms should not be ascribed to a raising of the classical size of the diplopia threshold due to special neuronal processes initiated by RD stereograms, but to a lowering of the classical limits of patent stereopsis from double images due to the increased difficulty of solving the correspondence problem in RD stereograms.  相似文献

The taste interaction between sucrose and fructose was assessed by using three different comparison procedures: the summated response comparison, the factorial plot comparison, and the equimolar comparison rule. The perceived sweetness intensities were obtained on a ratio scale by using a functional measurement approach in combination with a two-stimulus procedure. The conclusions obtained from each of the three comparison rules were identical. The taste interaction between sucrose and fructose could be explained to a large extent, but not completely, by the apparent taste "interactions" within sucrose and fructose as single substances. It is argued that the apparent taste interaction within a large number of single sugars and between two of these sugars in a mixture is somewhat synergistic at low sweetness levels, additive at intermediate sweetness levels, and suppressive at high sweetness levels.  相似文献

Three lines of evidence from psychophysical experiments implied that mutual suppression of bitter and sweet tastes is due to neural inhibition rather than chemical interactions in solution or competition of molecules for common receptor sites. Removal of sweetness from bittersweet mixtures caused the bitterness to increase. This was accomplished by adaptation to sucrose or by treatment with Gymnema sylvestre, neither of which affect the concentration of sucrose on the tongue. Such increases in the bitterness of mixtures, independent of the concentration of the sweet masking substance, are difficult to reconcile with suppression by means of chemical interactions. Similar dependence of suppression on perceived intensity (and independence from concentration) was observed with mixtures of phyenylthiocarbamide and sucrose. Tasters of phenylthiocarbamide showed stronger suppression of sweetness than nontasters. This result was also inconsistent with molecular interactions causing suppression, which would have resulted in the same degree of suppression for the two groups. Instead, these findings support neural explanations of mixture suppression, such as antidromic inhibition or occlusion.  相似文献

Repeated pairings of novel food-related odours with sweet tastes can result in enduring changes in sweetness of the odour alone, but have less consistent effects on odour liking. Variation in ability to taste propylthiouracil (PROP) might account for this, since PROP supertasters (ST) have been reported both to experience stronger sweetness intensity and to be more likely to dislike sweetness than do PROP nontasters (NT). Alternatively, individual differences in liking for sweetness may transfer to sweet-paired odours independently of PROP sensitivity. To explore this, evaluations of sucrose, saccharin, and PROP solutions were used to classify 92 volunteers as either sweet likers or dislikers and as PROP ST, NT, or medium tasters (MT). Changes in pleasantness of odours that had been paired with the taste of saccharin increased in sweet likers but decreased in dislikers. Odour sweetness increased regardless of PROP taster or sweet liker status. PROP ST rated saccharin as more bitter than did other taster groups and also showed greater increases in acquired bitterness of the saccharin-paired odour. Overall, these data suggest that individual differences in evaluation of saccharin reliably predict subsequent changes in evaluation of saccharin-paired odours, with hedonic changes corresponding with liking for sweet tastes and sensory changes reflecting differences in sensory quality between PROP taster groups.  相似文献

Certain odours and certain tastes appear to share common perceptual properties. One example is sweetness, a perceptual experience that results from stimulation of taste receptors on the tongue typically by sugars. The experiment here examined for evidence of this perceptual similarity using a novel and indirect test. Participants were exposed six times each, to three odours (strawberry, caramel, and oregano) and three tastes (sucrose, saline, and citric acid). Following a 10-min interval, participants were given a surprise frequency estimation task, in which they had to judge how often each stimulus had occurred. If sweet-smelling strawberry and caramel odours really do share this perceptual characteristic in common with sweet tasting sucrose, then frequency estimates for sucrose should be overestimated relative to non-sweet tastes. Not only was this observed, but frequency estimates for sweet tastes were also found to correlate with (1) evaluations from a later test of similarity between these sweet smells and sucrose, and (2) the degree to which these odours smelled sweet. These findings suggest a shared perceptual feature between such odours and sucrose - sweetness - under conditions where no judgment of perceptual quality was required.  相似文献

Outlined and solid-surfaced metric histoforms and polygons we;e employed in an identification task where choice forms were fixed at 0 deg and target forms at six points along the temporal horizontal meridian in the periphery (nasal retina). Accuracy in the identification of solid-surfaced polygons in the far periphery (80 deg from the fovea) was much higher than has been previously reported. Polygons were identified more quickly than histaforms, but a significant difference was not obtained between the speed of identification of outlined and solid shapes. Combined speed and error data indicated that shape (histoform or polygon) is the most salient dimension of a form less than 50 deg from the fovea. whereas beyond 50 deg from the fovea the surface (outlined or solid) of a form is its most salient dimension. Finally. comparisons of the functional relations provided by these performance data with anatomical and physiological data produced the following hypothesis: Spatial summation of rod receptors beyond 20 deg of angular eccentricity in the nasal retina is directly proportional to the density of rod receptors.  相似文献

Literature is surveyed briefly which reported the effect upon hearing of varying the onset of a light relative to the onset of a tone. Four forced-choice experiments involving approximately 32,000 trials of the four-alternative type are reported whose results show both similarities and differences when compared with earlier experiments which did not use forced-choice. Tentative conclusions derived from all the experiments described also take into account the effect of cessation of the light relative to the tone.  相似文献

Age effects on dual-task costs were examined in healthy adults (Exp. 1) and in typically developing children (Exp. 2). In both experiments, individual differences in performance on the single-task components were titrated so that any age differences in dual-task costs could not be attributed to differences in single-task performance. Dual-task costs were found, but there were no age-related differences in these costs in older relative to younger adults, in 7-year-old relative to 9-year-old children, or across all four age groups. The results from these experiments suggest that previously reported age differences in dual-task costs, in both healthy ageing and child development, may be due to a failure to adequately equate single-task difficulty.  相似文献

Koen and Yonelinas (2010; K&Y) reported that mixing classes of targets that had short (weak) or long (strong) study times had no impact on ?ROC slope, contradicting the predictions of the encoding variability hypothesis. We show that they actually derived their predictions from a mixture unequal-variance signal detection (UVSD) model, which assumes 2 discrete levels of strength instead of the continuous variation in learning effectiveness proposed by the encoding variability hypothesis. We demonstrated that the mixture UVSD model predicts an effect of strength mixing only when there is a large performance difference between strong and weak targets, and the strength effect observed by K&Y was too small to produce a mixing effect. Moreover, we re-analyzed their experiment along with another experiment that manipulated the strength of target items. The mixture UVSD model closely predicted the empirical mixed slopes from both experiments. The apparent misfits reported by K&Y arose because they calculated the observed slopes using the actual range of ?-transformed false-alarm rates in the data, but they computed the predicted slopes using an extended range from - 5 to 5. Because the mixed predictions follow a slightly curved ?ROC function, different ranges of scores have different linear slopes. We used the actual range in the data to compute both the observed and predicted slopes, and this eliminated the apparent deviation between them.  相似文献
