The present study employed a behavioural detection approach to investigate the combined effects of sample duration and sample presentation frequency on delayed matching accuracy of pigeons. Experiment 1 showed that when both samples were exposed at each of the two possible durations within a two-alternative, delayed matching session, discriminability was higher to the longer duration sample than to the short-duration sample, as found when sample duration is varied between sessions. Experiment 2's asymmetrical procedure increased bias toward the more frequent of the two samples but had no influence on discriminability. Initial discriminability was higher to samples exposed for longer durations, irrespective of stimulus presentation frequency. The results suggest qualitatively different effects of the two sources of stimulus control under consideration: Sample duration (a local or within-trial manipulation) exerted its effect on discrimination of the stimuli, whereas sample presentation frequence (a global factor) exerted its major effect on response bias. An interpretation of the data in terms of Blough's (1996) analysis of errors in matching tasks suggests that the amount of behaviour under control of the sample stimulus markedly changed with different sample durations. The analysis also showed that the biasing manipulation exerted most of its effect on the portion of behaviour outside of control by the critical stimulus. We argue that theoretical accounts of delayed matching performance need to consider both local and global factors as determinants of matching accuracy.  相似文献

Six pigeons were trained on a conditional discrimination task involving the discrimination of various intensities of yellow light. The research asked whether stimulus—response discriminability measures between any pair of stimuli would remain constant when a third or fourth sample and reinforced response were added. The numbers of different sample stimuli presented and different responses reinforced were two (Part 1), three (Parts 2 and 4), and four (Part 3). Across conditions within parts, the ratios of reinforcers obtainable for correct responses were varied over at least five levels. In Part 5, the numbers of sample stimuli and reinforced responses were varied among two, three, and four, and the reinforcer ratio between consecutive remaining samples was constant at 2:1. It was found that once a particular response had been reinforced, subjects continued to emit that response when the conditional stimulus for that response was no longer presented. Data analysis using a generalization-based detection model indicated that this model was able to describe the data effectively. Four findings were in accord with the theory. First, estimates of stimulus—response discriminability usually decreased as the arranged physical disparity between the sample stimuli decreased. Second, stimulus—response discriminability measures were independent of response—reinforcer discriminability measures, preserving parameter invariance between these measures. Third, stimulus—response discriminability measures for constant pairs of conditional stimuli did not change systematically as conditional stimulus—response alternatives were added. Fourth, log stimulus—response discriminability values between physically adjacent conditional stimuli summed to values that were not significantly different from estimates of the discriminability values for conditional stimuli that were spaced further apart.  相似文献

Two experiments considered the effects of introducing an extreme stimulus (anchor) upon the differential perception of tonal stimuli. In the first experiment, in which Ss rated series stimuli from 1,000 to 2,000 Hz or from 2,000 to 3,000 Hz, the presence of a 750-Hz anchor apparently disrupted discrimination. A second experiment involved testing for a difference threshold (method of limits) in which the standard was a tone of 1,500 Hz. The uncertainty interval (Iu) was larger when the interval between paired stimulus presentations was filled with a 750-Hz tone, again suggesting that discrimination is impaired by the introduction of a low-frequency anchor. Results are discussed in terms of theories relating range extent and discriminability.  相似文献

Predictions from a model of visual matching were tested in two experiments. The model consists of a wholistic comparison process followed by an element-by-element comparison process. All stimuli are processed by the first stage but only those that permit a decision based on a wholistic comparison produce responses. When discrimination is difficult and a decision cannot be reached by a wholistic comparison, the second stage of processing is initiated. Degree of discriminability and stimulus duration (100 and 1000 msec.) were varied in both experiments. In Exp. 1, the stimulus elements were arranged in a square configuration to facilitate a wholistic comparison. As predicted, the hard-different stimuli took longer to match than the same or easy-different stimuli. The hard-different stimuli presented for 1000 msec. took longer to match than those presented for 100 msec. There was no difference in accuracy between responses to hard-different pairs at the two durations. In Exp. 2, the stimulus elements were arranged in a horizontal row and placed one above the other to facilitate element-by-element comparison. As predicted, these stimuli produced slower and more accurate responses for same and hard-different stimulus pairs only when they were exposed for 1000 msec. Responses to easy-different stimulus pairs were made quickly and accurately.  相似文献

A random-walk model of visual discrimination is described and applied to reaction time (RT) distributions from three discrete-trial experiments with pigeons. Experiment 1 was a two-choice hue discrimination task with multiple hues. Choice percentages changed with hue discriminability; RTs were shortest for the least and most discriminable stimuli. Experiments 2 and 3 used go/no-go hue discriminations. Blocks of sessions differed in reward probability associated with a variable red stimulus in Experiment 2 and with a constant green stimulus in Experiment 3. Changes in hue had a large effect on response percentage and a small effect on RT; changes in reward shifted RT distributions on the time axis. The "random-walk, pigeon" model applied to these data is closely related to Ratcliff's diffusion model (Ratcliff, 1978; Ratcliff & Rouder, 1998). Simulations showed that stimulus discriminability affected the speed with which evidence accumulated toward a response threshold, in line with comparable effects in human subjects. Reward probability affected bias, modeled as the amount of evidence needed to reach one threshold rather than the other. The effects of reward probability are novel, and their isolation from stimulus effects within the decision process can guide development of a broader model of discrimination.  相似文献

Two experiments were designed to investigate the relation between the reported painfulness and the discriminability of pairs of electric shocks for which the ratio between the higher and the lower intensity was held constant. In both experiments, subjects first gave category ratings of the painfulness of single shocks in the range 40 to 4.8 mA. Then, in a discrimination experiment, they were required to identify the stronger of a pair of intensities presented in succession. The proportion of correct responses (Experiment 1) or the proportion of area under the receiver operating characteristic (Experiment 2) increased between a low-intensity pairing and a medium-intensity pairing and decreased between a medium-intensity pairing and a high-intensity pairing for subjects who rated the highest intensities as strongly painful. Subjects who gave moderate- or weak-pain ratings for the high-intensity shocks showed no significant increase or decrease in accuracy between the medium- and high-intensity pairings. Time-order errors were observed in Experiment 1. The proportion of trials on which the second stimulus of the pair was identified as the stronger increased monotonically as a function of stimulus magnitude. The results are discussed in the context of psychological assessment of analgesic procedures.  相似文献

The role of contingency awareness in classical conditioning experiments using human subjects is currently under debate. This study took a novel approach to manipulating contingency awareness in a differential Pavlovian conditioning paradigm. Complex sine wave gratings were used as visual conditional stimuli (CS). By manipulating the fundamental spatial frequency of the displays, we were able to construct pairs of stimuli that varied in discriminability. One group of subjects was given an "easy" discrimination, and another was exposed to a "difficult" CS+ and CS-. A 3rd group was exposed to a stimulus that was paired with the unconditional stimulus (UCS) 50% of the time and served as a control. Skin conductance response (SCR) and continuous UCS expectancy data were measured concurrently throughout the experiment. Differential UCS expectancy was found only in the easy discrimination group. Differential SCRs were found in the easy discrimination group as well as in the difficult discrimination group, but not in the 50% contingency control. The difficult discrimination group did not exhibit differential UCS expectancy but did show clear differential SCR. These observations support a dual process interpretation of classical conditioning whereby conditioning on an implicit level can occur without explicit knowledge about the contingencies. Processing of a visual stimulus can be improved by precuing its location. Most previous precue studies have used reaction time as the dependent measure and have found large effects; but when form discrimination accuracy has been used, precue effects have been relatively small. The present experiments yielded large, short-latency precue effects on form discrimination accuracy. A small square precue was briefly presented near one of four possible target locations. Then one of four possible targets (T-like figures) was presented in each location, followed by a mask. Observers attempted to identify the target that had been presented in the cued location. In experiment 1, target duration, cue-to-target distance, and cue-target onset asynchrony (SOA) were varied. Target discriminability (d') increased markedly with increasing precue-target SOA, even at very short SOAs. Thus, there was no evidence for a delay in the onset of precue effects (caused, for example, by the need to shift attention across the visual field). Performance was best for precues that were closest to the target, thus ruling out a forward masking explanation of the effect. Finally SOA and target duration interacted strongly - longer precue SOAs resulted in larger effects of target duration. In experiment 2, this interaction was replicated using an additional target duration and longer SOAs. One interpretation of this result is that focal attention increases the rate at which information can be extracted from a visual location.  相似文献

Six pigeons were trained in a discrete-trials signal-detection procedure to discriminate between a fixed-duration stimulus (5 s or 20 s) and a set of variable durations ranging from 2.5 s to 57.5 s in steps of 5 s. For each fixed-duration stimulus, the ratio of reinforcer frequencies contingent upon reporting the fixed versus the variable stimulus was systematically manipulated. Detection performance was well controlled by both the stimulus value and the reinforcer ratio. Both the discriminability between the fixed duration and the set of variable durations, and the discriminability between the fixed duration and each of the variable durations, were independent of the reinforcer-frequency ratio when discriminability was measured as log d. The sensitivity of response bias to reinforcement-ratio changes was independent of the value of the fixed duration, but was not independent of the discriminability of the variable durations from the fixed durations. Under current models, discriminability measures in complex temporal discrimination may be independent of biasing manipulations, but bias measures are not independent of stimulus values.  相似文献

Speed of sorting decks of 32 cards with two alternative stimuli was measured. The stimuli were pairs of dots with attributes of distance between dots, angle of orientation of the pair, and position of the pair to the right or left of center. The attributes varied in relative discriminability and were used in all possible pair- and triple-correlated (redundant) combinations. Results showed an increase in speed of sorting with either an increase in discriminability or an increase in number of redundant attributes. It is argued that the increased speed with addition of redundant attributes is due both to a selective serial processing of attributes (requiring attribute separability) and to an increased discriminability with combined attributes (requiring attribute integrality).  相似文献

The magnitude of power in the alpha-band (8–13 Hz) of the electroencephalogram (EEG) prior to the onset of a near threshold visual stimulus predicts performance. Together with other findings, this has been interpreted as evidence that alpha-band dynamics reflect cortical excitability. We reasoned, however, that non-specific changes in excitability would be expected to influence signal and noise in the same way, leaving actual discriminability unchanged. Indeed, using a two-choice orientation discrimination task, we found that discrimination accuracy was unaffected by fluctuations in prestimulus alpha power. Decision confidence, on the other hand, was strongly negatively correlated with prestimulus alpha power. This finding constitutes a clear dissociation between objective and subjective measures of visual perception as a function of prestimulus cortical excitability. This dissociation is predicted by a model where the balance of evidence supporting each choice drives objective performance but only the magnitude of evidence supporting the selected choice drives subjective reports, suggesting that human perceptual confidence can be suboptimal with respect to tracking objective accuracy.  相似文献

Performance measures such as log d and d′?aim to measure stimulus discriminability independently of response bias in conditional discrimination tasks, including the yes/no signal-detection procedure. However, they assume only one dimension of bias (e.g., response color) and do not account for bias on additional dimensions (e.g., response side). Such bias reduces log d, thus violating the statistical independence of discriminability and bias measurements. We modified log d to account for side bias and reanalyzed previous side-biased data. With strong side bias, the modified log d differed enough from the standard log d to potentially alter the conclusions of an experiment. Simulations showed that the modified log d produces discriminability estimates that are more accurate and bias-independent than the standard log d calculation.  相似文献

Stevens and Galanter’s (1957) iterative procedure for minimizing bias in category scaling was used for the scaling of loudness of white noise. The spacing obtained deviated systematically from a spacing constructed in accordance with an equal discriminability scale from a previous experiment (Eisler & Montgomery, 1972). For the stimulus spacing yielding a “pure” category scale, a magnitude scale was constructed too. Since the category scale could be predicted accurately by Fechnerian integration of this magnitude scale, it was concluded that the “pure” category scale is a pure discrimination scale. The discrepancy between the equal discriminability scale and the “pure” category scale was interpreted as a bias in the former scale due to greater recognizability of stimuli located at the extremes of the stimulus range.  相似文献

This research examines whether an extension of range-frequency theory (Parducci, 1965) could successfully predict context effects on discrimination between stimuli for two-category rating data. The new model proposes that similarity comparisons between stimulus values and rating category prototypes take place on an implicit range—frequency scale, and thus it entails effects of context on both mean ratings and discrimination indices. Predictions of the similarity-based range—frequency model were tested in an experiment in which the frequency distribution was manipulated by varying the range and relative frequencies of squares, with participants rating square sizes on a two-category scale. The model provided a parsimonious account of how discriminability of common stimuli increases with a decrease in stimulus range or an increase in the density of stimuli within a subrange.  相似文献

To assess the effects of methylphenidate on working memory, pigeons were trained in a delayed matching-to-sample task. Delay interval duration (0.2, 1, 3, 6, or 12 sec) was varied within sessions in order to separate delay-dependent from delay-independent effects of the drug on performance. A reduction in the sample response requirement from five responses to one response effectively reduced attention to the stimulus and impaired overall accuracy. Methylphenidate was administered in doses of 0.0 (saline control), 0.25, 2.5, and 10 mg/kg. Relative to performance with saline, accuracy was significantly reduced with 10 mg/kg methylphenidate to the same extent in both fixed ratio (FR) 1 and FR 5 conditions. The smaller doses had no effect, and there was no evidence that accuracy improved with drug administration. Intercepts and slopes of exponential functions fitted to measures of discriminability plotted as a function of delay showed that methylphenidate affected delay-independent aspects of performance (initial discriminability), but not delay-dependent aspects (rate of forgetting).  相似文献

An asymmetric model is described for interactions in the perception of two dimensions (length and orientation) of a single visual stimulus. Two methods were used to test these interactions, and models for the interpretation of the possible outcomes of these tests are discussed. A length discrimination task showed facilitation (decreased reaction time) when orientation was covaried with length, and interference (increased reaction time) when random orientation variation was introduced. A smaller effect was seen when length was varied in an orientation discrimination task in a correlated or random fashion. Analysis of sequential effects showed that reaction times are fastest on repetition trials and are slowed by either the need to change the response or the need for additional sensory processing. With the second method, it was found that the amount of information transmitted in the estimation of orientation was not affected by the introduction of the redundant dimension of length, but that there was a significant gain in the amount of information transmitted in the estimation of length by the addition of the redundant dimension of orientation. It is concluded that orientation is probably a perceptual primitive of the visual system whereas length is a computed variable.  相似文献

The effects of irrelevant information (0, 1, 2, or 3 bits stimulus) on absolute judgments of size were measured at different levels of discrimination difficulty. The stimuli were 7 small circular spots of light of different sizes, selected from an eaual-discriminability scole, and arranged into 6 pairs that represented different levels of stimulus dissimilarity. Three of the pairs comprised a low-dissimilarity (LD) subgrouping in which different lepels of dissimilarity and discriminability were confounded, whereas the remaining three pairs comprised a high-dissimilarity (HD) subgrouping in which different levels of dissimilarity occurred at a single high level of discriminability. Different colors were used to provide the four levels of irrelevant information; 240 Ss (10 in each of the 24 experimental conditions) made absolute judgments of size under the classical procedure for the method of single stimuli. Separate analyses of errors, reaction times, and rates of information transmission indicated that irrelevant information had an increasingly detrimental effect on absolute judgments as discrimination difficulty was increased (in the LD subgroup), but essentially no effect where discriminations were easily modefin the HD subgroup).  相似文献

The role of parts versus that of wholes in a visual perception has been debated for a century as two opposite approaches, namely, an analytic and holistic. In two psychophysical experiments we investigated whether the stimulus completeness or distinctiveness is essential for identification of the partially presented patterns under brief presentation conditions. For this purpose, a special class of stimuli was constructed in such a way that the patterns could be divided into informative and redundant parts. The first experiment clearly demonstrated the importance of the redundant part for effective pattern identification for the majority of subjects. The second experiment revealed the direct dependence of identification accuracy of the patterns on their completeness (2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 elements). Familiarisation of subjects with the test stimuli influenced the strength of this dependence.  相似文献

Tasters selected the odd stimulus from among sets of three samples of party dip. Two samples came from one batch, and one sample came from another batch. The physicochemical difference between the batches consisted of the presence or absence of added salt. Two different tests of discriminability were undertaken by the same subjects with the same stimuli: the triangle test and the three-alternative forced-choice (3-AFC) method. Although different numbers of correct selections were obtained in the two tasks, an index of discriminability,d’, had the same value when the data were analyzed in accordance with the Thurstone-Ura and signal-detection models, respectively. The average data support Frijters’s (1979b) contention that different models of the discrimination process are appropriate to the results of the triangular and the 3-AFC procedures. Further analysis of the data revealed that discrimination was poorer for trios containing one physicochemically weak stimulus and two stronger stimuli than it was for trios containing one stronger stimulus and two weak stimuli. A two-signal 3-AFC task was undertaken by some subjects, andd’ estimates from this task were lower than expected on the basis of performance in the other tasks.  相似文献
