The effect on matched size of the oculomotor adjustments was determined by stimulation and relaxation of accommodation and convergence by means of spherical lenses. The normal coupling between accommodation and convergence was maintained by introducing the amount of convergence appropriate to the lens power and each S’s interpupillary distance. Data indicate that the oculomotor adjustments are adequate to account for size constancy up to approximately 1 m, beyond which their effect progressively decreases. The actual accommodation in force was assessed by means of the laser scintillation technique. It was determined that the magnitude of accommodation responds accurately to the spherical lens introduced up to about 1 m observation distance, beyond which underaccommodation was noted. Examination of the matched size as a function of the actual accommodation distance reveals a very close correspondence to the size constancy prediction up to about 1 m.  相似文献

How do the colors of surfaces seen through fog depend on the chromatic properties of the fog? Prior work (e.g. Chen and D'Zmura, 1998 Perception 27 595-608) shows that the colors of surfaces seen through a transparent filter can be described by a convergence model. The convergence model takes into account color shift and change in contrast. Whether the convergence model can also be applied to fog was tested experimentally with an asymmetric matching task. In computer graphic simulation, observers adjusted the color of a surface seen through fog in order to match the color of a surface seen in the absence of fog. The convergence model fits the data well. The results suggest that the color constancy revealed in this task with fog is described best by a model that takes into account both shift in color and change in contrast.  相似文献

Both the image size of a familiar object and linear perspective operate as distance cues in stereoscopic depth constancy. This was shown by separating their effects from the effect of the oculomotor cues by creating cue conflicts between either the familiar size cue or linear perspective, on the one hand, and accommodation and convergence, on the other. In the case of familiarsize, this cue was used deceptively. In the case of linear perspective, spectacles caused nonveridical oculomotor adjustments.  相似文献

It is shown that veridical depth perception presupposes the processing of both the magnitude of retinal disparity and observation distance according to a square-law function specified by the underlying geometrical stimulus relations. In the present study, after testing its existence, this constancy of depth perception was investigated by measuring perceived depth as a function of retinal disparity and observation distance. In addition, the relative effectiveness of convergence and accommodation as possible indicators of distance was examined through a conflicting-cues paradigm. It was shown that in the perception of depth the visual system computes distance by taking into account the convergence parameter only, rather than that of accommodation or of both.  相似文献

How do the colors and lightnesses of surfaces seen to lie behind a transparent filter depend on the chromatic properties of the filter? A convergence model developed in prior work (D'Zmura et al, 1997 Perception 26 471-492; Chen and D'Zmura, 1998 Perception 27 595-608) suggests that the visual system interprets a filter's transformation of color in terms of a convergence in color space. Such a convergence is described by a color shift and a change in contrast. We tested the model using an asymmetric matching task. Observers adjusted, in computer graphic simulation, the color of a surface seen behind a transparent filter in order to match the color of a surface seen in plain view. The convergence model fits the color-matching results nearly as well as a more general affine-transformation model, even though the latter has many more parameters. Other models, including von Kries scaling, did not perform as well. These results suggest that the color constancy revealed in this task is described best by a model that takes into account both color shifts and changes in contrast.  相似文献

采用计算机仿真技术,研究了照明、表面和背景对颜色恒常的影响,结果表明:照明性质、表面属性以及背景属性均对颜色恒常程度产生显著影响,三者的影响是相互独立的;不同照明性质对颜色恒常程度具有不同影响,中性色照明光下颜色恒常程度较高;人的颜色恒常也依赖于物体的表面属性,对不同的表面进行匹配时,表现出了颜色恒常程度的较大波动;相同背景属性较不同背景属性具有较高的颜色恒常程度。在实验研究基础上建立了非线性颜色恒常模型,该模型对实验数据进行了很好拟合,具有了一定的符合人认知特点的颜色恒常能力。  相似文献

To examine reasons for inconsistent findings in the development of sex-category constancy, children's constancy judgments and their accompanying explanations were studied over a 3-year period. Preschool, kindergarten, and 1st-grade children (N = 195) completed a sex-category constancy measure that elicited explanations and assessed constancy for the self and others across changes in gender-typed clothing, activities, and traits. Improvements in sex-category constancy performance were linked to explanations based on operational reasoning. Lower constancy scores were linked to explanations that emphasized gender role norms and external appearances. A separate analysis revealed that judgment-explanation relationships were stronger for questions about gender role changes in the self as opposed to others and for changes in gender-typed clothing as opposed to activities and traits. Findings suggest that the salience and personal relevance of gender role changes have important effects on children's sex-category constancy judgments and explanations.  相似文献

Two widely used tests of gender constancy, one verbal and one perceptual, were given to 26 4-to-6-year-old children. Children were classified at different levels of gender constancy, depending on which test was used. These discrepant results were not accounted for by the differences in the way the tests presented (verbally or visually), nor by the tests' differing definitions of gender constancy. The majority of the children answered gender constancy questions as though they were referring to a “pretend,” as opposed to a “real,” situation; such responses decreased scores of gender constancy on both tests. The theoretical and methodological implications of children spontaneously adopting a pretend mode of responding are discussed.  相似文献

In real scenes, surfaces in different depth planes often differ in the luminance and chromatic content of their illumination. Scene segmentation is therefore an important issue when considering the compensation of illumination changes in our visual perception (lightness and colour constancy). Chromatic adaptation is an important sensory component of colour constancy and has been shown to be linked to the two-dimensional spatial structure of a scene (Werner, 2003 Vision Research 43 1611 - 1623). Here, the question is posed whether this cooperation also extends to the organisation of a scene in depth. The influence of depth on colour constancy was tested by introducing stereo disparity, whereby the test patch and background were perceived in either the same or one of five different depth planes (1.9-57 min of arc). There were no additional cues to depth such as shadows or specular highlights. For consistent illumination changes, colour constancy was reduced when the test patch and background were separated in depth, indicating a reduction of contextual influences. An interaction was found between the influences of stereo depth and spatial frequency on colour constancy. In the case of an inconsistent illumination change, colour constancy was reduced if the test patch and background were in the same depth plane (2-D condition), but not if they were separated in depth (3-D condition). Furthermore, colour constancy was slightly better in the 3-D inconsistent condition than in the 2-D inconsistent condition. It is concluded that depth segmentation supports colour constancy in scenes with inconsistent illumination changes. Processes of depth segmentation are implemented at an early sensory stage of colour constancy, and they define visual regions within which the effects of illuminant changes are discounted for separately. The results support recent models that posit such implementation of scene segmentation in colour constancy.  相似文献

The comparator hypothesis is a response rule stating that responding to a Pavlovian conditioned stimulus (CS) reflects the associative strength of the CS relative to that of other cues (comparator stimuli) that were present during CS training. Thus, modulation of the associative strength of a CS's comparator stimulus should alter responding to that CS. These studies examined the stimulus specificity of this effect using within-subjects designs. Rats were trained on 2 CSs, each with a unique comparator stimulus, to determine the degree to which posttraining extinction of the comparator stimulus for one CS influences responding to the other CS. Using negative contingency (Experiments 1 and 2), overshadowing (Experiment 3), and local context (Experiment 4) preparations, stimulus specificity was observed. In each case, posttraining extinction of the comparator stimulus for one CS had greater impact on responding to that CS than on responding to the alternate CS.  相似文献

Lightness constancy requires that a surface retain its lightness not only when the illumination is changed but also when the surface is moved from one background to another. Occlusion of one surface by another frequently results in a retinal juxtaposition of patches under different illuminations. At such edges, retinal luminance ratios can be much higher than in scenes with a single illumination. We demonstrate that such retinal adjacencies can produce failures of lightness constancy. We argue that they are responsible for departures from perfect lightness constancy in two prior experiments that examined the effects of depth relations on lightness constancy.  相似文献

Modification of the constancy of visual direction was produced by partially adapting Ss to the displacements of the visual field caused by magnifying lenses during 1 h of continuous head turning. The adaptation effects were measured by determining the range of perceived target immobility before and after this adaptation period. A method for measuring the range of apparent immobility of an auditory signal during head movements was developed and employed to test whether a modification of the constancy of visual direction transfers to the constancy of auditory direction. No such transfer was found, and it was concluded that a modification of the constancy of visual direction does not consist in an altered evaluation of kinesthetic cues for head turning. The method and the equipment used in the investigation of the constancy of visual direction are described; knowledge of the previous brief publications on this topic is not needed.  相似文献

Comparison of the results of previous studies of form constancy development is difficult because of differences in experimental paradigms used. The present study tested some aspects of the construction and mode of presentation of the comparison series presented by means of the method of limits. A randomized comparison series produced higher form constancy performance than did a serially-ordered series, and there were differences depending on the location of the point of objective equality with respect to the midpoint of the series. In addition, the ordered series resulted in a large error of anticipation at all ages studied. These results thus demonstrate the influence of the comparison series on apparent developmental trends of form constancy. The general trend of constancy performance was found to increase with age, contradicting the conclusions of most previous studies.  相似文献

Space constancy (the perception that the world remains stable despite eye movements) might be mediated by receptive fields with constant locations in the world rather than constant locations on the retina. In a strong form the hypothesis, receptive fields of single neurons would compensate for all eye movements, whereas in a weak form they would compensate only for the small movements of fixation that occur without retargeting. Early receptive field mapping confounded world-centered and retina-centered organizations by fixing the retina relative to the world. This paper links the strong and weak forms of constancy by relating previously isolated data, and illustrates the issues with a previously unpublished figure showing that striate receptive field have constant retinal locations. The first tests of space constancy in striate cortex contradicted the strong hypothesis; recent tests contradict the weak hypothesis, also. The results are consistent with modern theories of space constancy, differentiating between motor-oriented and perceptual functions of vision, and differentiating between constancy during pursuit and constancy across saccades. A series of experiments investigating the constancy of perceived direction was conducted. Experiments 1, 2, and 3 indicated that the perception of direction, while close to constancy, exhibited a consistent departure from constancy of approximately 2.5 deg. Experiments 4 and 5 investigated the departure from constancy in terms of the information of the position of the eyes within the head and the information of the retinal area (local sign) being stimulated. The results of these experiments indicated that the departure from constancy was a function of the underestimation of the position of the eyes within the head.  相似文献

Four experiments were designed to investigate the nature of the relationship between brightness contrast and brightness constancy while controlling the response criterion, the area of the surround, the stimulus configuration, and the mode of appearance of the modulus target. Ten Os in each of the four experiments estimated the apparent whiteness or brightness of targets with different contrast ratios. All targets were viewed at several illumination levels. Most constancy (whiteness and brightness) functions displayed shallow slopes that reflected a good approximation to constancy. The functions within Experiments I, III, and IV were vertically displaced and parallel; those in Experiment II were vertically displaced and increased in slope. This suggests that decreasing the contrast ratio had no effect on the tendency towards constancy when the area of the surround was greater than that of the target but resulted in a decrease in constancy when the area of the surround was equal to that of the target.  相似文献

Colour constancy refers to the stable perception of object colour under changing illumination conditions. This problem has been reformulated as relational colour constancy, or the ability of the observer to discriminate between material changes and changes in illumination. It has been suggested that local cone excitation ratios play a prominent role in achieving such constancy. Here we show that perceptual colour constancy measured by achromatic adjustments is to a large part complete after 25 ms. This speaks against a prominent role for receptor adaptation, which takes significantly longer. We also found no difference in colour constancy between colour changes that were compatible with a change of illuminant, and between colour changes where local cone ratios were uncorrelated between the two illuminants. Our results show that constant cone ratios are not necessary for colour constancy.  相似文献

For a stable visual world, the colours of objects should appear the same under different lights. This property of colour constancy has been assumed to be fundamental to vision, and many experimental attempts have been made to quantify it. I contend here, however, that the usual methods of measurement are either too coarse or concentrate not on colour constancy itself, but on other, complementary aspects of scene perception. Whether colour constancy exists other than in nominal terms remains unclear.  相似文献

Schoolboys from the Ivory Coast and from Kenya were tested on a simple task intended to detect the effect of implicit-shape constancy. The presence of such an effect was confirmed. Comparison of two Ivorean subsamples differing in their responses to a request to build a model of a depicted structure showed that those subjects who build flat (2D) models were less influenced by the implicit-shape constancy than those subjects who built three-dimensional structures. This confirms a postulated link between the implicit constancy and perception of pictorial depth.  相似文献
