Multiple Authorship in the Personnel and Guidance Journal: A 12-Year Study

The increase of multiple authorship in the Personnel and Guidance Journal over a 12-year period is explored. Reasons for the growth are examined.     

Special Issues of the Journal: Topics of Interest over the Years

Throughout its history, the Personnel and Guidance Journal and its successor, the Journal of Counseling and Development, have published a number of special issues. A listing of these special issues is offered as a bibliographic aid. The topics of the special issues are analyzed by category as evidence of trends in the history of scholarly interests in our field.     

Effects of Serving as APGA President

The 23 living past American Personnel and Guidance Association (APGA) presidents were queried concerning their involvement in professional organizations and the impact of the APGA presidency on their lives and careers. Results are discussed in terms of implications for members and future leaders.     

Institutional Affiliations of Contributors to the Personnel and Guidance Journal: Volumes 47–62

The institutional affiliations of contributors to the Personnel and Guidance Journal were examined for a 16-volume period (Vols. 47–62). Authors from colleges and universities represented the major source of contributions (80%). Colleges and universities were then ranked according to the number of articles submitted in each of the two 8-volume periods studied. The top 25 institutions for the entire 16-volume period were identified and ranked according to their contributions to the Journal. Results were compared to a previous study of Journal contributors to highlight trends across a 32-volume period.     

The Association for Human Development: a revitalized APGA

The American Personnel and Guidance Association faces a time of challenge as it moves increasingly to a world of change and innovation. Unfortunately, the divisional structure and emphasis of the Association as presently conceived builds for divisiveness, and little organizational unity is evident. However, all members in APGA are concerned with human development, maximizing individual potential, and helping individuals profit from developmental tasks involved in living. The Association for Human Development is suggested as a new name for APGA. Conceptual models for the divisions of the Association are suggested which imply the unity of the developmental process.     

Twenty Years Since and Beyond: An Interview With Roger Aubrey

The author and Roger Aubrey talked about Aubrey's early professional influences and significant historical trends in the field of counseling over the 20 years since his landmark 1977 article on the history of guidance and counseling appeared in the Personnel and Guidance Journal. In addition, Aubrey addressed revisions he had made in his contributions to the field of counseling since 1977 and commented on the “search for a system” in counseling. Aubrey also offered implications for the future of the field. On June 20, 1997, Roger Aubrey passed away at his home in Nashville, Tennessee.     

Publication Patterns of The Personnel and Guidance Journal/Journal of Counseling & Development: 1978 to 1993

The purposes of this study were (a) to identify the primary institutional sources of articles to The Personnel and Guidance Journal/Journal of Counseling & Development from 1978 to 1993 (Volumes 57–71); (b) to identify the primary individual contributors to this journal during the survey period; (c) to identify and compare the program affiliations of individual contributors by editor during the survey period; and (d) to speculate as to whether the study results, collectively, indicate a trend toward more psychologists than counselors contributing to this journal. A total of 1,843 articles were reviewed. Of the 2,198 authors, 69% were academicians and 31% were practitioners. The data suggest that there has been a clear pattern of more psychologists than counselors contributing to this journal.     

Sources of Journal Articles in Select APGA Journals According to Academic Rank of Authors

The academic rank of authors of articles appearing in The Personnel and Guidance Journal, The Rehabilitation Counseling Bulletin, Vocational Guidance Quarterly, and Counselor Education and Supervision during 1975, 1976, and 1977 is reported. The greatest percentage of authors (41.19%) held no academic rank. Relative to their colleagues with academic rank, Assistant Professors were most frequently represented. Students and Instructors were infrequently represented. Variables that may influence the observed frequency of authorship as well as limitations of this study are discussed. It is recommended that counselor educators encourage their students to conduct studies and to report the results as part of their training.

Reference List Inaccuracies: A Four-Decade Comparison

Errors in the reference lists of journal articles have been reported in studies conducted on journals issued in the 1970s and 1980s. On the average, faults and errors were found to occur in about 40% of the entries. The Personnel and Guidance Journal and a journal related to information science were the data sources for a four-decade study. Results indicated that error rates were lower in the mid-1950s in this sample but were very similar in the last three decades and similar to rates found in other studies. One or more errors occurred in about 40 to 45 of any 100 entries sampled from reference lists. Implications are explored.

An Unwarranted Escalation of Counselor‐Counseling Psychologist Professional Conflict: Comments on Weinrach,Lustig, Chan,and Thomas (1998)

S. G. Weinrach, D. Lustig, F. Chan, and K. R. Thomas (1998) made unwarranted claims about the number of psychologists publishing in the Journal of Counseling & Development during 1978 to 1993 as well as their membership in the American Counseling Association. The authors' claims are evaluated and then discussed in the context of the long‐standing counseling‐counseling psychology relationship.     

Employee development in a downsizing environment

This paper explores the meaning of employee development in a corporation experiencing force reductions. In this environment, development takes the form of enhancing employees' contributions on their present jobs and preparing them to meet the future needs of the business. The paper describes the personnel psychologist's role in establishing and communicating directions for skill development, maintaining opportunities for high potential managers, tracking employee attitudes about development opportunities, implementing lay offs, retraining survivors, and generally trying to stimulate a corporate development ethic.Manny London is a district manager in charge of employee development and organization effectiveness at AT&T. He is a consulting editor for theAcademy of Management Journal and a member of the editorial boards ofPersonnel Psychology and theJournal of Management Development.     

APGA Members in Retirement and Their Advice to the Rest of Us

Retired and emeritus members of APGA answered a survey on their lives in retirement, their recommendations to APGA concerning activities for retired members, their suggestions for training programs in geriatric counseling, and their advice to younger counselors on planning for retirement. The results indicate most retired counselors are financially comfortable and continue to lead happy and productive lives in retirement. In their recommendations the counselors emphasized the need to remain active and stressed the importance of planning well in advance of actual retirement. They had many specific suggestions for APGA programming.     

Proposed principles for the management of school records: excerpts

We reprint here, with permission of the Russell Sage Foundation, selected excerpts from their Guidelines for the Collection, Maintenance, and Dissemination of Pupil Records, published in 1970. The Guidelines should receive the careful attention of every school and college and all other institutions and agencies which collect personal information about their students and clients. The document is the report of a work conference, convened by the Foundation in May 1969, whose 20 participants included lawyers, a judge, a state senator, a philosopher, sociologists, educators, and the following APGA members: Annette Engel, Leo Goldman, Franklyn A. Graff, John L. Holland, Martin R. Katz, John D. Krumboltz, Roger T. Lennon, and Thomas E. Long. David A. Goslin of Russell Sage chaired the conference and edited the report. The portion reproduced here consists mainly of portions of the Guidelines themselves. The full report, which includes suggestions for implementation, has been widely distributed; additional copies are available from the Russell Sage Foundation, 230 Park Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10017.

Seven years of the Journal: a review

This article reviews the contents of volumes 41 to 47 (1962 through 1969) of the Personnel and Guidance Journal, focusing on its composition, its authors, and several aspects of its articles such as methodology, setting, and contents. Relative emphases and trends are also identified and discussed.
