Self-Directed Career Planning for Persons with Disabilities

Persons with physical disabilities often confront barriers to employment. This article describes a career development project that has addressed the special needs of disabled adults by: (a) developing a multimedia-based, self-directed career planning program organized around modules tailored to meet the unique needs of adults with disabilities; (b) providing a training program for 15 disabled adults working as paraprofessional career guidance technicians; and (c) establishing linkages with educational institutions and community agencies to provide for the institutionalization of this project at the local level.     

Identifying the Needs of Newly Unemployed Workers

Those responsible for providing services to the newly unemployed face the need to make choices relative to the allocation of scarce resources. Making these choices requires data on the perceived needs of those to be served. A sample of newly umemployed workers responded to a questionnaire indicating their needs for information and community services.

This article presents a comprehensive overview of the career counseling process for handicapped persons, with emphasis on developmental differences, assessment techniques, occupational information and exploration, and job placement techniques.

Career Education for Persons With Handicaps

Handicapped youth and adults still encounter serious problems assimilating successfully into today's rapidly changing society. After tracing the major events that have increased the momentum of career education for persons with handicaps, Brolin and Gysbers advocate a life-centered curriculum approach, which focuses on 22 skills essential for successful community living and working. They recommend that counselors assume specific responsibilities in this approach and outline competencies necessary to carry out guidance and counseling activities for persons with handicaps at four phases of career education. The article includes examples of successfully operating career education programs and concludes with a challenge to the profession.     

The Career Exploration Inventory: Expanding Options for the Unemployed

The Career Exploration Inventory, an innovative interest inventory that measures work and leisure interests throughout the life span, can be used by employment counselors to assist their clients in the exploration of the interaction of work and leisure interests.     

The Effectiveness of a Career Guidance Program With Long-Term Unemployed Individuals

A career guidance assistance program was undertaken with 58 long-term unemployed individuals, with its effectiveness evaluated through preintervention and postintervention questionnaire. Preintervention data indicated that 83% of individuals had never experienced career guidance and that 45% lacked direction in career options. Postintervention results indicated that 67% of participants believed that the career guidance process was very effective and 91% believed that they had developed more realistic expectations about career opportunities, after the intervention. Qualitative evaluations of the Intervention clustered around positive themes such as increased knowledge of self, improved direction in career goals, confirmation of own perceptions of abilities, and improved confidence. Comparisons indicated that participants were able to generate more career options with an expanded focus after the intervention.     

Social Support, Social Undermining, and Coping in Underemployed and Unemployed Persons

Participants (94 unemployed, 77 underemployed) were administered scales tapping social support, social undermining, coping, and distress. We hypothesised that the unemployed would exhibit less social support but more social undermining and distress than the underemployed; females would report more social support but less social undermining; social support would better predict coping than social undermining; social undermining would better predict distress than social support. The unemployed reported less social support, more distress, and poorer coping. Males reported less social support and more emotion-focused coping. Social support significantly predicted distress and coping. No group or gender differences were identified for social undermining, which did not predict distress or coping. We discuss the role of social undermining and distress in the unemployed.     

Identifying the Career Decision-Making Needs of Nontraditional College Students

As the number of nontraditional college students (defined as students over the age of 25) continues to increase on college campuses nationwide, there is a clear need to address the career development needs of this growing population. This article critically reviews the results of recent research evaluating the relationship between the age of college students and various aspects of their career development. On the basis of this review, several implications for career counselors who work with nontraditional college students are discussed, and ideas for future research in this domain are presented.     

Career Services in the Post‐COVID‐19 Era: A Paradigm for Career Counseling Unemployed Individuals

The 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID‐19) pandemic has caused unprecedented economic disruption and unemployment worldwide, threatening to become both a financial and a humanitarian crisis. Prolonged labor market recession and an acute rise of unemployment are expected. The main question for career counselors will be how to provide effective career counseling to unemployed people in the post‐COVID‐19 world, where they may face many other unemployment‐related problems. In this article, we suggest application of a holistic intervention model of career counseling for unemployed people that was designed to address the consequences of the acute financial recession in Greece.     

Examining Career Readiness in a Liberal Arts Undergraduate Career Planning Course

This study explored a career planning course at the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities’ College of Liberal Arts. The course aimed to improve students’ career readiness through reflections about their liberal arts education. Individual interviews explored how the course affected students’ ability to articulate the value of their education to potential employers. The authors found that students learned how to articulate career competencies and developed an understanding of what a liberal arts education entails and how it aligns with career readiness. Implications for career development practice are highlighted.     

Later Life Career Planning: A New Challenge for Career Counselors

This article discusses the issue of later-life career planning for adults. Many older adults choose to return to employment rather than enter the traditional retirement stage of their life cycle. The article considers career options for the older adult.

为了更有效地培养大学生的职业生涯规划能力,更有针对性地进行职业辅导,该研究在国内外关于职业生涯规划能力相关研究的基础上,采用文献法、访谈法和问卷法,探索出在校大学生的职业生涯规划能力的结构,编制出《大学生职业生涯规划能力问卷》;测验结果显示问卷具有良好的项目特性,信度和效度测量指标均达到比较满意的水平。     

Description of a Community Involvement Program for Persons with Special Needs

This article describes an extensive community involvement program which is intended to: (1) provide year-round social and recreational opportunities for persons with special needs; (2) support and empower families of these persons; and (3)facilitate community awareness and knowledge about persons with special needs in the Fort Knox (KY) community and region. Initially, the background and context of program development is presented, followed by analysis of need for the progrma, and then delineation of guiding principles which have provided programmatic focus. Next, central program elements are outlined to demonstrate its complexity, integrity, and replicability. Finally, a discussion of the program's implications for other communities is provided.

摘要：目的 探讨团体沙盘游戏在大学生职业生涯规划规划中应用的可行性。方法 研究采用实验组、控制组前后测设计,选取16名大学生随机分为实验组和对照组,对实验组进行团体沙盘游戏辅导,对照组无干预。结果 团体沙盘游戏促进大学生了解自我、提升自信心、明确生涯目标、增强生涯决策能力。结论 团体沙盘游戏可以作为大学生职业生涯规划的一种有效方法和工具得以推广和使用。     

Career/Life Planning for Displaced Homemakers

This article describes the development, content, and outcome of a highly cost-effective program designed to meet the personal and vocational needs of displaced homemakers. Future research directions are suggested.
