Although the Wechsler Memory Scale—Revised (WMS-R; Wechsler, 1987) is one of the more frequently used measures of memory and attention, its Attention/Concentration Index (ACI) has been minimally researched. If the ACI is to be used as a measure of attention, the need exists to determine if it is related to other measures theoretically argued to be sensitive to attention deficits. The present study evaluated the relationship between the WMS-R ACI and other putative measures of attention by comparing individuals labeled as Attention Impaired [ACI at least 15 points < General Memory Index (GMI)] versus those labeled as Memory Impaired (GMI at least 15 points < ACI). Contrary to expectations, the Attention Impaired group scored equal to the Memory Impaired group on all measures theorized to be sensitive to attention deficits (Trails A and B time, Trails B errors, Rey AVLT interference list), except for statistically weaker performance on Trails A errors. In contrast but as expected, the Memory Impaired group scored statistically worse on all memory tests (Rey AVLT, all TPT variables). The groups also did not differ on tests argued not to be differentially affected by either attention or memory (WAIS-R FIQ, Category Test). It is concluded that the WMS-R Attention Index is not related to deficits on other measures sensitive to attention, further emphasizing the need to identify more clearly specific attention constructs.  相似文献

The psychometric characteristics of the Wechsler Memory Scale—Revised (WMS-R) are evaluated and related to dits clinical utility. The accuracy of the scale scores is shown to be limited by their high standard error, low reliabilities, and consequent large standard errors of measurement. Specific procedures are discussed for establishing confidence intervals and for testing the significance of differences between scores. It is concluded that the WMS-R, like the original Wechsler Memory Scale, provides only a rough estimate of overall memory functioning. The multidimensional index scores have not been shown effective in describing the nature or the pattern of memory deficits. Recommendations for the clinical use of the WMS-R are provided.  相似文献

The convergent and discriminant validity of Russell's Revised Wechsler Memory Scale (RWMS) was investigated in a sample of 228 males referred to a VA Medical Center Psychology Service for evaluation. Results of correlational and regression analyses involving background characteristics (race, age, ward assignment) and scores on other measures (WAIS, MMPI, Graham-Kendall Memory for Designs, Tapping, Trails, Aphasia Screening Test) suggested both strengths and weaknesses in the RWMS. Strenghts included minimal relationships between RWMS scores and personality disturbance, race, or age, and substantially lower correlations with IQ than reported for the original WMS. Weaknesses involved the measurement properties of the retention scores, and uncertain discriminant validity in relation to the various other ability measures.  相似文献

The present study examines the possible impact of drinking status on objective memory performance in older adults. Subjects were 214 seniors who were participating in a memory research project and had been screened for cognitive impairment. Cognitive measures included the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) and the visual reproduction subtest of the Wechsler Memory Scale–Revised. Drinking status classification (i.e., abstinent, past drinker, light drinker, moderate drinker, and problem drinker) was based on the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test scores for the past year and report of past drinking history. Very few subjects were classified in the problem group, with the majority abstaining in the past year. Findings indicated that problem drinkers differed from moderate social drinkers on immediate visual memory, and also had a trend for more retroactive interference on the CVLT. There was no evidence that moderate social drinking (average 13.6 standard drinks) had an adverse impact on memory in this population.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to test the relationship between IQ and physical aggression in a nonclinical-nonforensic male sample in a laboratory setting. Thirty males completed an abbreviated version of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale—Revised. Aggression was measured using a modified version of the Taylor reaction-time (RT) aggression paradigm in which subjects competed on a RT task and both received and delivered shocks to a fictitious opponent in provoking and nonprovoking conditions. Provocation conditions (High and Low) were defined by the intensity of shocks the subjects received. Results demonstrated strong inverse correlations between IQ and aggressive behavior under both High and Low Provocation conditions.  相似文献

Assessment of functional status is an important aspect of clinical evaluation. As part of the standardization of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV) and Wechsler Memory Scale-Fourth Edition (WMS-IV), participants completed the Texas Functional Living Scale (TFLS), a measure of Instrumental Activities of Daily Living. The relationships between TFLS and WAIS-IV and WMS-IV were examined in both normally developing and clinical samples. In general, the highest correlations were between TFLS and measures of general cognitive ability (WAIS-IV FSIQ [Full Scale IQ] and GAI [General Ability Index]) and working memory (WAIS-IV WMI [Working Memory Index] and WMS-IV VWMI [Visual Working Memory Index]). Across the clinical populations, working memory subtests were generally strongly related to TFLS performance, although this relationship was more consistent with WAIS-IV than WMS-IV. Contrast scaled scores are presented for the TFLS based on WAIS-IV or WMS-IV performance. These scores allow the evaluation of functional abilities within the context of cognitive and memory ability, enhancing and expanding the utility of the WAIS-IV and WMS-IV.  相似文献

This study investigated whether the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale — Revised (WAIS-R) and Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) demonstrate similar patterns of relationship with the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS). Sixty VA patients were administered the WAIS-R and WMS and 60 completed the WAIS and WMS. The groups were comparable in terms of demographic variables. Pearson correlations were computed between the subtest and IQ scores from the intelligence scales and the scores from the WMS for each group. Comparison of the resulting correlations for the WAIS-R group with those of the WAIS subjects demonstrated only four significant differences, indicating that the WAIS-R and WAIS variables covary in a similar manner with the WMS scores. Following factor analysis of the test data for both groups, coefficients of congruence indicated a high degree of similarity between the two factor solutions. Essentially the same relationships emerged between intelligence variables and the WMS regardless of which scale was administered.  相似文献

Apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype is a possible influence on nonpathological cognitive aging. The authors studied 462 community-dwelling, 79-year-old people born in 1921, whose childhood IQ had been assessed in the Scottish Mental Survey of 1932 (Scottish Council for Research in Education, 1933). Adjusting for sex, childhood IQ, and self-reported illnesses, the authors found that those with an APOE e4 allele had significantly lower Wechsler Logical Memory (D. Wechsler, 1987) scores than those without an e4 allele. Those people with APOE s2/e3 genotypes had significantly higher Wechsler Logical Memory scores than e3/s3, who were significantly higher than e3/e4. Neither nonverbal reasoning nor verbal fluency were affected. In this sample, APOE genotype contributed to verbal memory in old age.  相似文献

Past research has found that children with epilepsy exhibit decreased memory skills. In addition, some studies have found that children with epilepsy obtain significantly lower IQ scores than controls. In an effort to examine whether children with epilepsy have specific memory weaknesses versus global cognitive difficulties, the present study compared the performance of 62 children (age range = 6-16 years). Thirty-one children with epilepsy were compared to 31 age- and IQ-matched controls on the Children's Memory Scale (CMS) to determine whether differences in memory skills persist when IQ is matched. An independent t-test comparing index and scaled scores was performed. The results indicated that with the exception of the Word Pairs subtest (p < .01), children with epilepsy did not differ significantly on the CMS subtests when IQ was matched. This suggests that list-learning paradigms may be particularly sensitive to memory impairments in children with epilepsy and/or that children with epilepsy have more global cognitive impairments.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI) on Wechsler Memory Scale‐III (WMS‐III) performance. Since poor effort potentially contaminates results, effort was explicitly assessed and controlled using two well‐validated cognitive validity indicators, the Portland Digit Recognition Test (PDRT) and Reliable Digit Span (RDS). Participants were 44 mild TBI patients with good effort, 48 mild TBI patients with poor effort, and 40 moderate–severe TBI patients with good effort. A dose–response relationship between injury severity and WMS‐III performance was demonstrated. Effect size calculations showed that the good effort mild TBI patients did not differ from normal (average Cohen's d= 0.07) while moderate–severe TBI had a moderate effect on WMS‐III scores (average Cohen's d=?0.52). Consistent with previous literature, the moderate–severe TBI group scored the lowest on WMS‐III Visual indices. Effort had a larger effect than injury severity on WMS‐III scores (average Cohen's d=?1.27). Clinical implications of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

Clinicians can use the base rates of low scores in healthy people to reduce the likelihood of misdiagnosing cognitive impairment. In the present study, base rates were developed for the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV) and Wechsler Memory Scale-Fourth Edition (WMS-IV) using 900 healthy adults and validated on 28 patients with moderate or severe traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). Results indicated that healthy people obtain some low scores on the WAIS-IV/WMS-IV, with prevalence rates increasing with fewer years of education and lower predicted intelligence. When applying the base rates information to the clinical sample, the TBI patients were 13 times more likely to be identified as having a low cognitive profile compared with the controls. Using the base rates information is a psychometrically advanced method for establishing criteria to determine low cognitive abilities on the WAIS-IV/WMS-IV.  相似文献

A sample of 115 men and women between the ages of 20 and 60 completed the 30-item General Health Questionnaire together with the short-form Revised Eysenck Personality Questionnaire. The declining cognitive functioning typically found in patients with Alzheimer's disease presents an opportunity to study that decline. The changing magnitude of ever widening discrepancies between premorbid estimators of IQ and observed IQ increases as severity of the disease increases. Premorbid IQs estimated by these scores (the National Adult Reading Test-Revised, the reading tests of the Revised and Third Editions of the Wide Range Achievement Test, and a demographically based regression index for the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised) had relatively similar discrepancies from obtained WAIS-R Full Scale IQs in samples of normal elderly (n = 30), and elderly patients diagnosed with mild (n = 30) and moderate Alzheimer's disease (n = 30) dementia. The discrepancies became larger, regardless of premorbid estimator, as disease severity progressed from none to mild to moderate across the samples.  相似文献

In a previous study, the cumulative effect of recurrent severe hypoglycemia on cognitive function was examined in 100 patients with insulin-treated diabetes and a significant correlation was observed between the frequency of severe hypoglycemic episodes and the difference between their current IQ and estimated premorbid IQ (Langan, Deary, Hepburn, & Frier, 1991). The study here extended this model for examination of the role of biological environmental influences on intelligence. Eighty-five of the original cohort of 100 patients were recalled and tested on Wechsler Performance IQ, a test of premorbid IQ, the Hick Reaction Time task, the Sternberg Memory Scan task and a test of Rapid Visual Information Processing (RVIP). The patients' frequency of severe hypoglycemia was assessed using a structured interview. Both IQ-decrement estimates and frequencies of severe hypoglycemia proved reliable after 18 months (correlations > .75) and the corrected correlation between these two variables was about .4. Therefore, repeated episodes of acute severe neuroglycopenia are associated with a lowering of IQ. Frequency of severe hypoglycemia was significantly related to Hick decision times and to response thresholds in the RVIP task. Factor analysis suggested that hypoglycemia affects decision or response-initiation processes rather than encoding, storage, comparison, or classification processes in short-term memory. Indices of these short-term memory processes were highly related to IQ-type test scores. This study also confirms, in a sample with a near-normal distribution of IQ, that measures of psychometric intelligence are significantly correlated with indices from elementary cognitive tests, especially RVIP task, which is based on signal-detection theory.  相似文献

An estimate of someone's IQ is a potentially informative personal datum. This study examines the association between external skull measurements and IQ scores, and uses the resulting regression equation to provide an estimate of the IQ of King Robert I of Scotland (Robert Bruce, 1274–1329). Participants were 48 relatively healthy Caucasian men (age 71–76 years) resident in Scotland. Using magnetic resonance imaging data, intracranial volume estimated from external skull length and width correlated greater than .5 (p < .001) with measured intracranial area, which correlates very highly with brain volume. IQ scores estimated from the National Adult Reading Test (NART) correlated .56 (p < .001) with measured intracranial area, and .49 (p < .01) with estimated intracranial volume based on external skull width and length. The partial correlation coefficient of this latter association was .25 (p = .09) after adjustment for measured intracranial area. Thus, actual intracranial area accounts for about 74% of the variance shared by NART and estimated intracranial volume. A cast of the skull of Robert Bruce was measured and its intracranial volume estimated. A regression equation between IQ and estimated intracranial volume, based on data from the 48 subjects, estimated the IQ of Robert Bruce at about 128 (95% confidence interval 106 to  130), i.e. almost two standard deviations above the mean. NART scores show a ceiling effect, so this estimated IQ might be an underestimate. Robert Bruce's estimated high IQ is congruent with his military, political and other intellectual achievements.  相似文献

This study compared clock drawings by 42 medically hospitalized patients with a mean age of 51.9 (SD = 10.1) years, using four sets of published scoring criteria to determine comparability of classification and to assess validity by comparison to other measures of cognitive functioning. We found impairment in 20 of 42 cases using the criteria of Mendez et al. (1992); 11 of 42 cases by Sunderland et al. (1989); 9 of 42 cases with Freedman et al. (1994); and 8 of 42 cases according to Rouleau et al. (1992). Kappa coefficients of impairment status between sets of scoring criteria ranged from .41 to .86. Pearson correlations of raw scores between schemes ranged from .72 to .94. All except Sunderland et al. were significantly correlated with the Standardized Mini-Mental State Examination. All correlated significantly with the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale–Revised Block Design; however, only Mendez et al. correlated significantly with the Neurobehavioral Cognitive Status Examination. On the basis of these results and our experience, we recommend using the Freedman scoring scheme.  相似文献

Recent research has reported the Rey Auditory-Verbal Learning Test Trial V (RAVLT-V) score to be a sensitive indicator of global cognitive functioning, not merely verbal learning skills. The concurrent validity of the RAVLT-V relative to other neuropsychological measures frequently utilized in medical rehabilitation was investigated in a sample of 64 outpatients diagnosed with traumatic brain injury (TBI). The sample was predominantly male (77%), white (97%), youthful (31.4±11.5 years), high school educated, and an average of 53 months postinjury. Using stepwise multiple regression analysis, a three-variable model consisting of gender, Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised Delayed Memory Index, and Trailmaking Part B (time) accounted for 61% of the variance in RAVLT-V scores. These findings suggest that in TBI patients, the RAVLT taps not only specific verbal learning and memory, but also global cognitive functions. Sensitivity to diffuse neuropsychological changes and ease/speed of administration make the RAVLT a valuable tool in medical rehabilitation settings.  相似文献

Individuals differ along a continuum of preference for diurnal activity level, known as Morningness-Eveningness. Some evidence suggests that an Eveningness orientation (i.e., preference for later rise and bed times) is weakly associated with higher cognitive ability, but no studies have examined this relationship using clinically accepted, psychometrically valid measures of cognitive ability. The present study examined the correlation between Morningness-Eveningness with scores on the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence (WASI) of 54 healthy volunteers. Lower Morningness (i.e., Greater Eveningness) orientation was correlated (r = -.23) with higher Verbal IQ for the entire sample. When the data were examined separately by sex, the correlation between Morningness-Eveningness and Verbal IQ was significant for women (r = -.44) but not for men (r = -.09).  相似文献

This study describes the psychological problems of a group of Catholic clergy and religious who were referred for residential treatment. Psychological test data were obtained from 29 men and 13 women ranging in age from 29 to 64. The main tests used were the Weschler Adult Intelligence Scale—Revised, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, and Exner's Comprehensive System approach to the Rorschach Inkblot Test. A consistent constellation of problems was found; an intellectualized orientation along with naive defensiveness and difficulty in the handling of emotions. The men did not respond in a stereotypically masculine way and 30% were found to be confused or distressed about their sexual orientation. The longstanding nature of the problems suggests that the need for help could have been identified with thorough evaluations at the seminary or novitiate level and so prevented some of the disruption that led to the referrals.  相似文献
