According to reciprocal role theory, the father's socialization behavior promotes sex-typing in children. While sex-typing is encouraged by both parents, the father makes a greater differentiation between sons and daughters. In this article, the research on differential socialization behavior is reviewed. Some studies have used multiple measures of parent-child interaction and often only a few of these have revealed differences related to the sex of the parent. However, as indicated both in a qualitative review of the literature and in a meta-analysis, results that are significant provide a modest degree of support for father-specific socialization behaviors. In 20 of 39 independent published studies, the father's ratings or treatment of boys and girls differed significantly. By contrast, the differences for mothers, if present at all, were comparatively few in any of the studies. The pattern of father-specific effects was most evident in the area of discipline and physical involvement and was weak in the areas of affection and everyday speech with infants and toddlers. Research on children's perceptions of parental socialization behavior is consistent with the existence of differential socialization practices used by the father in particular. Reciprocal role theory is discussed in terms of influences on parent-child interaction with regard to traditional and nontraditional family arrangements. Further research using within-family designs is required to examine fathers' differential treatment in the context of changing family and work roles.  相似文献

The paper compares and evaluates three different HMIs (Human Machine Interface) for an ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) supporting cooperative interactions between drivers while merging and turning left. In road traffic, cooperation means that drivers (cooperation partners) coordinate their driving behaviour in a way that they facilitate each other’s intended driving manoeuvres. An experimental study was conducted with 30 participants in a static high-end simulator. The test scenarios included merging onto a motorway and turning left at a rural intersection. As independent variables, the HMI (Baseline vs. Sensor vs. C2X (Car-to-everything)) was varied in addition to the cooperation situation (merging vs. turning left). All HMI variants were based on a HUD (Head-Up Display). In the Baseline condition, the HMI only showed information about speed and navigation. The Sensor HMI visualised additionally the driving situation as it can be detected by the vehicle's own sensors. The C2X HMI was based on C2X communication and also represented the different phases of manoeuvre coordination with the cooperation partner. The traffic flow and the behaviour of the surrounding traffic did not differ between the different HMI variants, in order to ensure that the traffic situation did not influence the participants’ evaluation of the HMI variants. The dependent variables included subjective (e.g. acceptance, usability) and objective measures (e.g. driving and gaze behaviour). The results showed that a system supporting cooperative interactions is generally accepted by drivers. The most preferred system was the C2X HMI. The advantages of a C2X based HMI were an improved user experience leading to a greater intent to use the ADAS for cooperative driving interactions, increased system trust, and an easier handling of the system. The workload of the C2X HMI did not exceed the level reported for the Baseline or the Sensor HMI – although the C2X HMI presented more information. The results are used to derive indications for the design of assistance systems supporting cooperative driving behaviour.  相似文献

In the present study, 648 youths from across the state of Kansas voluntarily evaluated themselves and their parents using the Personal Attribute Inventory for Children. Self-concept was found to be significantly higher for those from intact families in comparison with those from divorced remarried families. Evaluations of mothers were significantly higher for those from intact and divorced nonremarried families as compared with those from divorced remarried families. The ratings of fathers by youths from intact families were significantly more favorable than the ratings by those from either divorced nonremarried or divorced remarried families. Interestingly, gender by family status two-way interaction effects were also found for self-concept and ratings of fathers. Possible explanations for these findings, and their implications, are discussed.  相似文献

Golf’s governing bodies’ recent decision to ban all putting styles “anchoring one end of the club against the body” bridges an important practical problem with psychological theory. We report the first experiment testing whether anchoring provides technical and/or psychological advantage in competitive performance. Many “greats” of professional golf from Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus to Tiger Woods have argued against anchoring, believing that it takes “nerves” out of competitive performance and therefore artificially levels the playing field. To shed more light on the issue, we tested participants’ performance with anchored and unanchored putters under low and high pressure when controlling for the putter length. We found no statistically significant evidence for a technical advantage due to anchoring but a clear psychological advantage: participants who anchored their putters significantly outperformed unanchored counterparts under high, but not low, pressure. Results provide tentative evidence for the ban’s justification from a competitive standpoint. However, before any definite conclusions can be made, more research is needed when using high-level golfers.  相似文献

Pedestrian behavior is affected by a multitude of factors such as age, gender, and operating conditions. However, traditional statistical analysis based on observed movements or questionnaire survey is unable to model decision-making process of each pedestrian. This study develops an innovative approach based on fuzzy logic to model the underlying cognitions and behavioral patterns of pedestrians as inferred from field observation in order to evaluate age and gender effect of pedestrians in crossing a signalized crosswalk and when jaywalking. Fuzzy sets and rules are created to model the relationship between human cognitions and decisions of an individual pedestrian. Through calibrating the membership functions of different age and gender groups, behavioral patterns of pedestrians are evaluated and compared. Different from most previous studies, both older and younger pedestrians are found to be less risk-taking than adult pedestrians. Moreover, significant gender difference is found only for cognitions of most hazardous conditions. Consistent with previous studies, it is seen that men have better cognitive skills than women at detecting hazardous situations. The findings from this study are useful to better design safe pedestrian crossing facilities. The fuzzy logic-based approach also provides an innovative way to simulate pedestrian movements in microscopic simulation models.  相似文献

In 1972, the reversion to Japanese rule brought with it many changes for Okinawans, among them the widespread introduction of psychiatry. Psychiatry was not well received at first due to the extensive presence of shamans, who had traditionally dealt with Okinawans’ spiritual and psychological afflictions. Both psychiatrists and shamans claimed to be able to heal those who were labelled ‘mentally ill’ or ‘mentally disordered’ by psychiatrists. This conflict between systems over the body of the patient/client is relevant to debates today about both the perceived value of generic mental health diagnosis and treatment regimes compared with indigenous healing,1 See Kleinman (, ); WHO (2001).  [Google Scholar] and the question of isolating how markers or symbols of identity are employed in patients’ help-seeking choices. We propose that the dark triad of personality predicts how recipients respond to eudaimonic narratives (stories dealing with purpose in life, the human condition, and human virtue). Matched eudaimonic or noneudaimonic videos were presented via random assignment. The more individuals lack empathy and organize their world around self-promotion—reflected in the so-called dark triad of narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy—the more they perceived the eudaimonic stories (vs. control) to be inauthentic and corny (perceived corniness). This effect translated to a more negative overall evaluation of the eudaimonic videos (moderated mediation). Self-reported feelings of being touched, moved, and inspired (meaningful affect) were largely unaffected by the dark triad, suggesting that these personality factors do not disable emotional responses to eudaimonic narratives.  相似文献

Four experiments were conducted to replicate and extend the findings by Shuell and Keppel (1970) as well as others, that when properly equated for original learning, “fast” and “slow” learners have parallel forgetting curves. In Experiments I and II, the Shuell-Keppel findings, originally demonstrated on American students learning lists of words, were replicated on samples of Nigerian students. In Experiments III and IV, Nigerian and American students, respectively, learned poems to a criterion of 75–90% correct and were tested for retention. In all studies, “fast” and “slow” learners were brought to a similar learning criterion, with the result that their forgetting curves were parallel.  相似文献

Thirty adolescent educable retardates,30 equal-MA normals, and 30 equal-CA normals were tachistoscopically presented a square array of four letters at two exposures (.01 sec and .3 sec). The groups did not differ significantly in correct recognitions at the shorter exposure and the two older groups had significantly better recognitions in the right visual field than the left. Under the longer exposure the groups ordered from poorest to best performance: retardates, equal-MA normals, and equal-CA normals; and no group recognized significantly more letters on one side than the other. Results were discussed in terms of consistency of reporting patterns which aided recognition.  相似文献

Using the differential susceptibility perspective (Belsky & Pluess, 2009) as a guiding frame-work, age 12 neighborhood disadvantage (ND) and family characteristics (parental knowledge) were examined as moderators of the relations between age 12 youth impulsivity and the development (ages 13, 14, and 15) of positive (community activities) and negative (antisocial behavior; ASB) adolescent behavior. An interaction between ND and youth impulsivity (age 12) operated with differential susceptibility, but only for female community activities at age 13: under low levels of ND, impulsive adolescent females engaged in the highest levels of community activities, whereas under high ND, they engaged in the lowest levels. Exploratory analysis showed the association between community activities and ND to be partially related to parents' or adults' engagement in informal social controls (e.g., alerting the police with misbehavior in the neighborhood). Differential susceptibility effects were not identified for: (i) parental knowledge and impulsivity; (ii) ASB (ages 13, 14 or 15); or (iii) community involvement at ages 14 and 15. Findings provide limited evidence for impulsivity as a differential susceptibility phenotype.  相似文献

Problems with clinical research that create conflicts between doctors’ therapeutic and research obligations may be fueled by a rigid view of science as determiner of truth, a heavy reliance on statistics, and certain features of randomized clinical trials. 1 suggest some creative, feminist approaches to such research and explore ways to provide choice for patients and to use values in directing both therapy and science — to enhance the effectiveness of each.  相似文献

This study reports findings on appreciation of the “before” and “after” event sequence with normal and educable mentally retarded (EMR) children matched on verbal mental ability (MA). Before and after constructions were associated with three variables at a time: semantics (logical vs. arbitrary event sequence), syntax (complex when conjunction preposed vs. simple when conjunction embedded), and an order of mention strategy (coinciding with the event occurence or reversing the event occurence). The data show that normal children perform significantly better than EMR children and suggest that the linguistic performance of EMR children cannot be best predicted on the basis of MA. Before is better understood than after, in general, by both groups, but a number of interactions between syntax, semantics, and an order of mention strategy suggests that differences in performances between normal and EMR children are of a quantitative rather than a qualitative nature. Linguistic (PPVT IQ) and cognitive (WISC-Picture Arrangement) factors are, as MA, poor predictors of before and after comprehension by normal and EMR children.  相似文献

A randomized controlled trial examined whether the diagnostic process for Alzheimer's disease and other dementias may be influenced by knowledge of the patient's education and/or self-reported race. Four conditions were implemented: diagnostic team knows (a) race and education, (b) education only, (c) race only, or (d) neither. Diagnosis and clinical staging was established at baseline, at Wave 2, and for a random sample of Wave 3 respondents by a consensus panel. At study end, a longitudinal, "gold standard" diagnosis was made for patients with follow-up data (71%). Group differences in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; American Psychiatric Association, 1994) diagnosis were estimated using logistic regression and generalized estimating equations. Sensitivity and specificity were examined for baseline diagnosis in relation to the gold standard, longitudinal diagnosis. Despite equivalent status on all measured variables across waves, members of the "knows race only" group were less likely than those of other groups to receive a diagnosis of dementia. At final diagnosis, 19% of the "knows race only" group was diagnosed with dementia versus 38% to 40% in the other 3 conditions (p = .038). Examination of sensitivities and specificities of baseline diagnosis in relation to the gold standard diagnosis showed a nonsignificant trend for lower sensitivities in the knowing race conditions (0.3846), as contrasted with knowing education only (0.480) or neither (0.600). The finding that knowledge of race may influence the diagnostic process in some unknown way is timely, given the recent State-of-the-Science conference on Alzheimer's disease prevention, the authors of which called for information about and standardization of the diagnostic process. A nonword prime can sound like a target word or one of the target's associates, and it can look like either without sounding like either. These pseudohomophones and pseudohomographs can vary in the number of letters shared with the target or its associate. In an associative priming experiment in which targets were named and prime duration was 125 msec within a mask-prime-mask-target sequence, pseudohomophones primed and pseudohomographs did not, with the pseudoassociative priming being only weakly affected by spelling differences. In three further experiments, prime homophony and homography were defined in respect to the target. Prime durations were 125 and 21 msec within a mask-prime-mask-target sequence and 57 msec within a mask-prime-target sequence. The superior priming by pseudohomophones was relatively insensitive to spelling. Results are discussed in terms of the phonological coherence hypothesis and the roles for orthographic information implied by the hypothesis.  相似文献
