Williams and Best's (1982, 1990a) cross-culturalgender stereotype data from 25 countries, previouslyanalyzed in terms of affective meanings, ego states, andpsychological needs, were re-analyzed in terms of the Five Factor Model (FFM) of personality.In each country, participants were approximately 100university students, equally divided by gender. Withresults averaged across all countries, it was found that the pancultural male stereotype was higherthan the pancultural female stereotype on Extraversion,Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability, and Openness toExperience while the pancultural female stereotype was higher on Agreeableness. Re-analysis of thestereotype data from Japan and Pakistan, which had beenfound relatively atypical in previous analyses, revealedFFM profiles generally similar to the pancultural profiles. In this paper we present an analysis of persuasive definition based on argumentation schemes. Using the medieval notion of
differentia and the traditional approach to topics, we explain the persuasiveness of emotive terms in persuasive definitions by applying
the argumentation schemes for argument from classification and argument from values. Persuasive definitions, we hold, are
persuasive because their goal is to modify the emotive meaning denotation of a persuasive term in a way that contains an implicit
argument from values. However, our theory is different from Stevenson’s, a positivistic view that sees emotive meaning as
subjective, and defines it as a behavioral effect. Our proposal is to treat the persuasiveness produced by the use of emotive
words and persuasive definitions as due to implicit arguments that an interlocutor may not be aware of. We use congruence
theory to provide the linguistic framework for connecting a term with the function it is supposed to play in a text. Our account
allows us to distinguish between conflicts of values and conflicts of classifications.

Definitions of Gender and Sex: The Subtleties of Meaning 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Definitions of the word gender were collected from 137 participants, who also completed questionnaires designed to determine aspects of the usage of the words gender and sex. The majority of participants were European American (86.9%), followed by Latino/a (3.6%), Asian/Asian American (2.9%), African American (2.2%), Native American (1.5%), and West Indian (1.5%). Most participants (70.9%) had attended at least some college and occupations included students (43%), professionals (27.8%), health care workers (4.3%), technical workers (5%), sales and service workers (9.4%), maintenance workers (1.4%), and business owners (1.4%). Data were examined to see which common themes emerged from the free form define gender question, the amount of interchangeability of sex and gender in a sentence completion task, and the varieties of beliefs about the relation between the terms gender and sex. Results indicate a variety of understandings and beliefs about gender that range from the common response that gender is the same as sex to some less common responses that associate gender with females or discrimination. Implications of the ambiguous meaning of gender are discussed with an emphasis on the responsibility of researchers to clarify their own understanding of the terms when they discuss gender or sex in their research and publications. 相似文献

This study investigated children’s understanding of unfamiliar noun and verb definitions in tasks that were manipulated for
syntactic and semantic properties of definitions. The study was also designed to examine the relation between understanding
word definitions and the skills of syntactic awareness and making inferences. A total of 117 children over three upper elementary
grades (3, 4, 5) participated in the study. The definitional tasks were presented in multiple choice format, with each definition
followed by four context sentences. In the syntactic/semantic condition, which included nouns and verbs, the context sentences
were manipulated for syntactic and semantic properties. In the semantic condition, which included only nouns, the context
sentences were manipulated only for semantics. All children also completed a syntactic awareness task and a making inferences
task. Results indicated that children did not make significant grade improvements in the semantic task, but did so in the
syntactic/semantic task, suggesting the dependence of syntactic cues on definitional understanding. Findings further suggested
that inferencing and syntactic awareness are important to children’s ability in understanding a definition for an unfamiliar
word and to integrating that meaning into a context sentence. 相似文献

AbstractThe theory I present and defend in this paper—what I term the art type theory— holds that something is a work of art iff it belongs to an established art type. Something is an established art type, in turn, either because its paradigmatic instances standardly satisfy eight art-making conditions, or because the art world has seen fit to enfranchise it as such. It follows that the art status of certain objects is independent of what any individual or culture might say about it, while the art status of others fundamentally depends on the judgment of the art world. In this paper we analyze the uses and misuses of argumentation schemes from verbal classification, and show how argument from
definition supports argumentation based on argument from verbal classification. The inquiry has inevitably included the broader
study of the concept of definition. The paper presents the schemes for argument from classification and for argument from
definition, and shows how the latter type of argument so typically supports the former. The problem of analyzing arguments
based on classification is framed in a structure that reveals the crucial role it plays in the persuasion process. The survey
of the literature includes the work of Hastings, Perelman, Kienpointner and Schiappa, but still finds much of value in Aristotle.
Lessons drawn from Aristotle’s Topics are shown to be useful for developing new tools for assessing definitions and arguments
from definition.
