The Mrs. Lincoln Response

The observed inability of individuals to respond appropriately to persons in trauma is described. Nine different categories of inappropriate or Mrs. Lincoln responses are identified and discussed in terms of their effectiveness for the responder, who is protected by an inappropriate response. A discussion is presented of the counselor's responsibility to model appropriate responses and to educate others to respond appropriately to the public.     

Mrs. Aremac and the Camera: A Response to Ryberg

In a recent article in Res Publica, Jesper Ryberg argues that CCTV can be compared to a little old lady gazing out onto the street below. This article takes issue with the claim that government surveillance can be justified in this manner. Governments have powers and responsibilities that little old ladies lack. Even if CCTV is effective at preventing crime, there may be less intrusive ways of doing so. People have a variety of legitimate interests in privacy, and protection for these is important to their status as free and equal citizens. Consequently, though necessary, effectiveness is insufficient to justify CCTV in a democracy.

在海峡两岸,临水夫人被民众尊奉为“陆上女神”,而与“海上女神”妈祖一道受到最隆重的礼拜,临水夫人信仰也成了我国民俗文化尤其是闽浙赣粤湘台乡土文化的重要组成部分。本文从宗教哲学的角度出发,以分析临水夫人的原型入手,着重阐析了临水夫人儒道释三位一体的宗教形象,庶几有助于人们对临水夫人信仰这一民俗文化现象有较全面、深入的认识。     

"Worlds apart": truth telling in the case of Mrs. VV

This article discussed how the views of a terminal cancer patient and her family, who were immigrants from Romania, differed from those of her North American caregivers. It presents evidence about truth telling to cancer patients in Eastern Europe and general cultural differences in attitudes to truth telling. Literature on how to span the gap between different cultural worlds is reviewed. Conclusions address ways to minister to patients who come from "different worlds" than their caregivers.     

Freud and Gilles de la Tourette. Speculations regarding the diagnosis of Mrs. Emmy von N

The author reviews the case of Emmy von N. and provides a historical overview of the Gilles-de-la-Tourette syndrome (tic convulsif) referring also to recent studies of this illness. She revises Freud's diagnosis of hysteria in favour of the Gilles-de-la-Tourette syndrome.
