The effects of stimulus duration and spatial separation on the illusion of apparent motion in the auditory modality were examined. Two narrow-band noise sources (40 dB, A-weighted) were presented through speakers separated in space by 2.5°, 5°, or 100, centered about the subject’s midline. The duration of each stimulus was 5, 10, or 50 msec. On each trial, the sound pair was temporally separated by 1 of 10 interstimulus onset intervals (ISOIs): 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 15, 20, 50, or 70 msec. Five subjects were tested in nine trial blocks; each block represented a particular spatial-separation-duration combination. Within a trial block, each ISOI was presented 30 times each, in random order. Subjects were instructed to listen to the stimulus sequence and classify their perception of the sound into one of five categories: single sound, simultaneous sounds, continuous motion, broken motion, or successive sounds. Each subject was also required to identify the location of the first-occurring stimulus (left or right). The percentage of continuous-motion responses was significantly affected by the ISOI [F(9,36) = 5.67,p < .001], the duration × ISOI interaction [F(18,72) = 3.54,p < .0001], and the separation × duration × ISOI interaction [F(36,144) = 1.51,p < .05]. The results indicate that a minimum duration is required for the perception of auditory apparent motion. Little or no motion was reported at durations of 10 msec or less. At a duration of 50 msec, motion was reported most often for ISOIs of 20–50 msec. The effect of separation appeared to be limited to durations and-ISOIs during which little motion was perceived.  相似文献

The quality of stroboscope motion induced by the successive presentation of two illuminated squares obeys two rules. For all stimulus durations shorter than 100 msec, optimal motion occurs when the stimulus onsets differ by about 120 msec. For stimulus durations longer than 100 msec, optimal motion occurs when the second stimulus begins at the termination of the first stimulus. The two rules relating quality of motion to duration suggest a single principle, namely, that the quality depends only on the interval between the visual responses to the two stimuli. The interresponse interval at which motion is optimal is independent of stimulus duration.  相似文献

Previous work (Tuller, Case, Ding, & Kelso, 1994) has revealed signature properties of nonlinear dynamical systems in how people categorize speech sounds. The data were modeled by using a twowell potential function that deformed with stimulus properties and was sensitive to context. Here we evaluate one prediction of the model—namely, that the rate of change of the potential’s slope should increase when the category is repeatedly perceived. Judged goodness of category membership was used as an index of the slope of the potential. Stimuli from a “say”-“stay” continuum were presented with gap duration changing sequentially throughout the range from 0 to 76 to 0 msec, or from 76 to 0 to 76 msec. Subjects identified each token as either “say” or “stay” and rated how good an exemplar it was of the identified category. As predicted, the same physical stimulus presented at the end of a sequence was judged a better exemplar of the category than was the identical stimulus presented at the beginning of the sequence. In contrast, stimuli presented twice near the middle of a sequence with few (or no) stimuli between them, as well as stimuli presented with an intervening random set, showed no such differences. These results confirm the hypothesis of a context-sensitive dynamical representation underlying speech.  相似文献

Is the perception of velocity determined by the prior discrimination of spatial and temporal distances? Two experiments sought to answer this question by comparing the discriminabilities of moving stimuli varied in spatial extent, temporal duration, or in redundant combinations of both variables. The subject's task was to identify which of two alternative stimuli was presented on each trial. A set of four stimuli was constructed from two values of spatial extent and two values of temporal duration. Separate conditions required discrimination of each of the six possible pairs of these stimuli. Experiment 1 examined continuous motion and Experiment 2 examined apparent motion for stimuli with short (50 versus 65 msec) and with long (500 versus 650 msec) interstimulus intervals. With continuous motion and with good apparent motion (short intervals), the discrimination between the different-velocity bivariate pairs was too accurate to be attributed only to discriminations of the spatial and temporal extents of the motion. This did not occur with poor apparent motion. Evidently, time and space are perceptually related.  相似文献

Previously, it was shown that the minimum conditions for the illusion of auditory apparent motion (AAM) depend on stimulus timing but not spatial separation. In the present experiment, the effects of stimulus timing and source separation on the perceived velocity of AAM were examined. Eight listeners estimated the velocity, duration, and distance traveled of AAM, using a no-modulus, magnitude estimation procedure. Four burst durations (25, 50, 100, and 300 msec), 10 stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs; 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, and 120 msec) and two separations (10° and 40°) were tested. Perceived velocity estimates were related to the total duration (burst duration + SOA) of the stimulus sequence. The effect of separation on velocity was extremely small but statistically significant. These results are similar to those obtained previously on the minimum conditions for AAM. Duration estimates were related only to total duration, but separation estimates were related to both separation and total duration. These results suggest that velocity is possibly a primary dimension of AAM that is independent of source separation.  相似文献

Two experiments investigated the importance of figurai relationships among stimulus elements in the determination of the kind of motion perceived in bistable apparentovement displays. Stimulus frames containing the words MITE and ITEM were constructed in such a way that the letters I, T, and E appeared in corresponding locations while the M was in disparate locations between frames. When the frames were alternated with a 20-msec ISI, observers maintained local figurai identity in their percepts of apparent movement. However, when the frames were alternated with an 80-msec ISI, observers reported apparent movement of the entire groups of letters and thereby ignored figurai relationships in their percepts of apparent movement. In a second experiment, it was found that figurai nonidentity between elements of successive frames always resulted in apparent movement of a perceptual group or “blob” regardless of ISI. It is suggested that short-range apparent-movement percepts rely strongly upon figurai identity among corresponding stimulus elements, whereas long-range apparent-movement percepts do not.  相似文献

Object-based representations in visual short-term memory (VSTM) were examined using a change detection memory task. A display comprising two rows of four differently colored elements was followed by a probe display in which only one of the rows reappeared. On same trials, the probed row was identical to the corresponding row in the memory display. On different trials, two of the elements in the probed row had their colors exchanged. In each memory display, a task-irrelevant visual element appeared between the two rows, with the potential to function as an occluder. Performance was enhanced when perceptual completion meant that four, rather than eight, objects were perceived in the memory display and when the probe display revealed that the occluded elements continued behind the occluder. It appears that several forms of representation can co-occur to support VSTM, one of which is object based.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to identify spatial properties of motion patterns yielding perceived depth. A model was proposed to describe the different motion patterns in terms of the common and the relative motions of the moving parts. Using motion patterns consisting of two dots moving in straight paths, it was found that there were three different types of relative motions yielding unambiguous percepts: (1) lack of relative motions was perceived as motion in a frontoparallel plane; (2) two-dimensional concurrent motions were perceived as translatory motion in depth; (3) nonconcurrent motions were perceived as rotation in depth. Only two-dimensional motion patterns yielded stable depth percepts. The utility of the proposed vector analysis was discussed, and further research suggested.  相似文献

A dynamical model is used to show that global motion pattern formation for several different apparent motion stimuli can be embodied in the stable distribution of activation over a population of concurrently activated, directionally selective motion detectors. The model, which is based on motion detectors being interactive, noisy, and self-stabilizing, accounts for such phenomena as bistability, spontaneous switching, hysteresis, and selective adaptation. Simulations show that dynamical solutions to the motion correspondence problem for a bistable stimulus (two qualitatively different patterns are formed) apply as well to the solution for a monostable stimulus (only one pattern is formed) and highlight the role of interactions among sequentially stimulated detectors in establishing the state dependence and, thereby, the temporal persistence of percepts.  相似文献

We present a new multistable stimulus generated by continuously rotating an ellipse behind four fixed occluders. Despite the stimulus remaining constant, observers can alternate between one of four percepts: (1) a continuously morphing cross; (2) two independent perpendicular bars oscillating in depth; (3) a rigidly rotating ellipse observed behind the occluders; (4) a fixed cross observed through a continuously rotating, elliptical aperture. Interestingly, the initial percept naive observers tend to see is percept 1, which is the only nonrigid motion percept. This appears to be a violation of the hypothesized 'rigidity heuristic' in which rigid motion percepts tend to be perceived over retinally equivalent nonrigid ones. Here, we describe the relationships between each of the percepts and the assignment of contour ownership and figure/ground segmentation.  相似文献

In 'Kanizsa' figures, vivid subjective shapes are seen in the absence of explicit contours to define them. When two or more such figures are presented sequentially, so that the subjective shape occupies different positions, good apparent motion of the shape is usually reported. This motion percept must be mediated by a high-level process, in which form extraction precedes motion detection. Some spatial and temporal properties of this motion process are investigated. A major finding is that motion is only perceived when the time interval between successive frames falls below about 500 ms, and the duration of each frame exceeds about 80 ms.  相似文献

Auditory apparent motion under binaural and monaural listening conditions   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This investigation examined the ability of listeners to perceive apparent motion under binaural and monaural listening conditions. Fifty-millisecond broadband noise sources were presented through two speakers separated in space by either 10 degrees, 40 degrees, or 160 degrees, centered about the subject's midline. On each trial, the sources were temporally separated by 1 of 12 interstimulus onset intervals (ISOIs). Six listeners were asked to place their experience of these sounds into one of five categories (single sound, simultaneous sounds, continuous motion, broken motion, or successive sounds), and to indicate either the proper temporal sequence of presentation or the direction of motion, depending on whether or not motion was perceived. Each listener was tested at all spatial separations under binaural and monaural listening conditions. Motion was perceived in the binaural listening condition at all spatial separations tested for ISOIs between 20 and 130 msec. In the monaural listening condition, motion was reliably heard by all subjects at 10 degrees and 40 degrees for the same range of ISOIs. At 160 degrees, only 3 of the 6 subjects consistently reported motion. However, when motion was perceived in the monaural condition, the direction of motion could not be determined.  相似文献

When Os are permitted to manipulate the interstimulus onset interval (ISOI) to obtain optimal apparent movement between two ipsilateral vibrotactile stimuli, a consistent quantitative relation between ISOI and stimulus duration appears. The present report describes conditions for movement between contralaterally-placed stimuli, and shows that whereas movement is qualitatively incomplete, the aforementioned relation is still evident. The results are discussed in the light of recent work in both visual apparent movement and complex patterns of stimulation on the skin.  相似文献

Evidence for bistability in the perception of motion and stationarity was obtained for a displaced dot-figure embedded in a background of randomly moving noise dots. In the temporal symmetry condition, the figure was presented for the same duration in its two locations; either figure motion or random motion was perceived, depending on the number of noise dots. In the temporal asymmetry condition, the figure was presented for different durations in its two locations; figure motion, a single, stationary figure in a fixed position, or random noise was perceived, again depending on the number of noise dots. Competition between these percepts was established by an analysis of switching rates and by an experiment demonstrating the presence of hysteresis as noise levels were gradually increased and decreased across the figure-motion and figure-stationarity boundaries. This evidence for bistability in the perception of figure motion and figure stationarity (one or the other, but not both, was perceived for the same stimulus) suggested the presence of strong inhibitory competition between motion- and position-detecting mechanisms.  相似文献

Recent research at our laboratories in the field of human auditory time perception revealed that the duration of short empty time intervals (less than approximately 200 msec) is considerably underestimated if they are immediately preceded by shorter time intervals. Within a certain range, the amount of subjective time shrinking is a monotonous function of the preceding time interval; the shorter it is, the more it shrinks its successor. In the present study, the preceding interval was kept constant at 50 msec, and the following interval, for which the duration had to be judged, varied from 40 to 280 msec. The results showed that at up to 100 msec, the perceived duration increased to a much lesser extent than did the objective duration. Beyond 120 msec, the perceived duration quickly increased and reached a veridical value at 160 msec. Such a sudden change of perceived duration in a temporal pattern in which the objective duration varies gradually indicates a typical example of categorical perception. We suggest that such a categorization of the time dimension might be a clue for processes of speech and music perception.  相似文献

In three experiments, we investigated the relative perceived duration of a full bandwidth image and a set of high- and lowpass filtered images of a scene, briefly presented on a visual display unit. In Experiment 1, the various images were compared with each other, using a paired comparison method. All images were presented for 40 msec, and observers were asked to judge which of each pair of images had the longest duration. The results showed that images containing a wide spatial frequency bandwidth were judged to be of longer duration than were images of a narrower bandwidth, regardless of whether the latter were high- or lowpass filtered. In Experiment 2, a 40-msec presentation of each of the images was compared with a presentation of a probe that was 20, 40, 60, or 80 msec in duration. Observers again judged which of each pair of images had the longest duration. The results were very similar to those of Experiment 1, with wide bandwidth images being judged to be of longer duration than were narrow bandwidth images. In Experiment 3, instead of comparing the various filtered versions of the image with each other, we attempted to obtain a direct measure of perceived duration by comparing a flashing LED to a 40-msec flash of a subset of the images used in the previous experiments. The observers' task was to adjust the duration of the LED flash to match the perceived duration of each image.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Five experiments were designed to investigate the influence of three-dimensional (3-D) orientation change on apparent motion. Projections of an orientation-specific 3-D object were sequentially flashed in different locations and at different orientations. Such an occurrence could be resolved by perceiving a rotational motion in depth around an axis external to the object. Consistent with this proposal, it was found that observers perceived curved paths in depth. Although the magnitude of perceived trajectory curvature often fell short of that required for rotational motions in depth (3-D circularity), judgments of the slant of the virtual plane on which apparent motions occurred were quite close to the predictions of a model that proposes circular paths in depth.  相似文献
