In two experiments, the integration over spatial extent in taste was investigated for threshold sensitivity to NaCl and for suprathreshold intensity perception of saltiness. The area of stimulation was doubled by adding either an ipsilateral or a bilateral stimulus. The two stimuli could be of equal or unequal intensity. The data showed that at threshold level a probability summation model applied to all bilateral and most of the ipsilateral stimulus combinations. Probability summation failed to predict detection probability when two stimuli with different intensities were presented at the same tongue side. For suprathreshold stimuli, the magnitude of the saltiness sensation as estimated by a line-length method depended on the level of stimulation. The possible peripheral interaction mechanisms and central factors contributing to the taste response were discussed.  相似文献

Threshold measurement and matching procedures were used to determine the amount of temporal summation at threshold and suprathreshold levels of vibrotactile stimulation on the thenar eminence of the hand. The frequency of the stimulus was 25, 40, 80, or 200 Hz. At 25 Hz, temporal summation was absent at all intensity levels. Considerable amounts of temporal summation were observed for 80- and 200-Hz stimuli, although the effects decreased as a function of intensity. At 40 Hz, no temporal summation was observed at threshold, but above threshold, a small amount was observed at all intensity levels. The results support a duplex model of mechanoreception in which one of two receptor systems exhibits temporal summation.  相似文献

In normal subjects, binocular rivalry suppression takes time to build up (Wolfe, 1986a). The time courses of interocular suppression are different and heterogeneous in amblyopic subjects (de Belsunce & Sireteanu, 1991). In the present study, we found that, in normal observers, progressive reduction of one eye’s stimulus luminance with neutral density filters produces time courses similar to those of amblyopic subjects. Conversely, in amblyopes, attenuation of the dominant eye’s stimulus produces time courses similar to those of normal observers. Under conditions of balancing of the two eyes, amblyopes experience alternating suppression, similarly to binocular rivalry of normals.  相似文献

Binocular interactions of suprathreshold grating patterns have been investigated using a reaction time measure of contrast detection. Simple reaction times were determined for monocular and binocular viewing conditions over a contrast range from .63 to near threshold. The results from all subjects showed binocular summation for contrast levels near threshold, but there was considerable variation across subjects for contrast levels above threshold. Some subjects showed summation over the entire contrast range, but other subjects showed either binocular inhibition or binocular facilitation for some range of contrast levels. The pattern of binocular interaction for a given subject was consistent for several spatial frequencies. The differences in types of interaction between subjects, the variation in magnitude of binocular interaction with contrast level for each subject, and the data from experiments involving stimulation of noncorresponding retinal areas show that the binocular interactions found for suprathreshold stimuli cannot be accounted for on the basis of probability, and must, therefore, result from physiological interactions between the two eyes. These interactions have been investigated further under conditions of (1) induced fixation disparity, (2) horizontal gratings, and (3) orthogonally oriented gratings.  相似文献

Temporal summation of the visual system was studied at suprathreshold levels by measuring reaction time (RT) to the double pulses that were equal in luminance (L) and duration. The RTs were determined as functions of L and the stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) between the onsets of the two pulses. The relation between RT and L obtained for a given SOA was found to be a power function with the exponent 1/3. The function relating L to SOA was then derived for each of three criterion RTs. The L-SOA relationship indicated partial summation at SOAs shorter than about 20 msec. Inhibition was observed at SOAs longer than about 80 msec. These findings were consistent with the predictions from a temporal integration model.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to determine whether threshold shifts occurred during magnitude-estimation scaling of suprathreshold stimuli presented to the thenar eminence of the right hand. Possible relationships of the vibrotactile threshold shifts to suprathreshold stimulus intensity, magnitude-estimation responses, and over-all scaling behavior were explored. A single group of 14 subjects whose ages ranged from 18 to 22 yr. participated. Each subject performed two magnitude-estimation tasks. In one of the tasks threshold of sensitivity was determined after every suprathreshold numerical response of the subject. If a threshold shift was recorded, threshold was allowed to return to pretest baseline level before continuation to the next suprathreshold stimulus presentation. Analysis showed that threshold shift did occur during vibrotactile magnitude-estimation scaling on the hand and that it was related to suprathreshold stimulus intensity. Results also showed that the subjects' numerical magnitude-estimation responses and over-all scaling behavior in the form of power function exponents were not statistically different for the two scaling tasks.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to determine if lingual vibrotactile threshold shifts occurred during magnitude-estimation scaling of suprathreshold stimuli presented to the dorsal surface of the tongue. Possible relationships of the lingual vibrotactile threshold shifts to suprathreshold stimulus intensity, magnitude-estimation responses, and overall scaling behavior were explored. A single group of 24 subjects with an age range of 18 to 22 years participated in this study. Each subject performed two magnitude-estimation tasks. In one of the tasks, threshold of sensitivity was determined after every suprathreshold numerical response of the subject. If a threshold shift was recorded, threshold was allowed to return to the pretest baseline level before continuing to the next suprathreshold stimulus presentation. The results showed that threshold shift did occur during lingual vibrotactile magnitude-estimation scaling, and that it was related to suprathreshold stimulus intensity. The results also showed that the numerical magnitude-estimation responses of the subjects were different for the two scaling tasks. Overall scaling behavior of the subjects in the form of power-function exponents was not different for the two tasks.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of age on tactile threshold shifts occurring during magnitude-estimation scaling of vibratory stimuli presented to the dorsal surface of the tongue. Relationships of the lingual vibrotactile threshold shifts to suprathreshold stimulus intensity, magnitude-estimation responses, and over-all scaling behavior were explored. Three groups differing in mean age participated in this study (Group 1 8.05 yr., Group 2 19.46 yr., and Group 3 56.2 yr.). Each subject performed two magnitude-estimation tasks. In one task, threshold of sensitivity was measured after every suprathreshold numerical response to the subject. If a threshold shift was recorded, threshold was allowed to return to the pretest baseline level continuing to the next suprathreshold stimulus presentation. The results showed that threshold shift during magnitude-estimation scaling took place for all three age groups and that the shift was related to the intensity of the suprathreshold vibratory stimulus being applied to the tongue. They also showed that Group 2 (young adults) performed magnitude-estimation scaling differently when threshold shift was controlled than when it was not. The other two groups of subjects were not similarly affected.  相似文献

The Piéron function (Piéron, 1914, 1920, 1952) describes the decay of reaction time (RT) when the intensity of the stimulus is increased. It is generally demonstrated within a suprathreshold range of intensities. However, in some studies, for the lowest range of intensities, the exponent of the function is clearly greater than that for the upper ranges of intensities. Such an increase in the exponent for the lowest intensities is assumed to result from a combined effect of stimulus intensity and of stimulis uncertainty in detection. Our first experiment used luminance levels that covered all the scotopic range and a spatial two-alternative forced-choice task in which both accuracy and RT were measured. It demonstrated a drastic increase in the exponent in the Piéron function when the intensities reached the threshold region. Since the estimates of the threshold region may have been biased by the use of a much larger range of luminances, a second experiment was conducted using luminances that covered only the threshold region. This experiment confirmed the previous estimates for the threshold region.  相似文献

The possibility of spatial summation of conducted ??Ts (temperature decrements from the adapted skin temperature) was tested when the ??Ts were presented simultaneously and individually at symmetrical sites on either side of the body. The use of a signal detection rating method yielded data that indicate that spatial summation is complete (area and intensity trade reciprocally) for ??s near threshold and at clearly suprathreshold intensities of stimulation is invariant of the adapted skin temperature (AT), and the intensity of stimulation within the range of stimuli used (from as little as ?0.05?C to as much as ?1.25?C). In view of the characteristics ascribed to the thermosensory apparatus in humans, it is postulated that spatial summation occurs in the central nervous system.  相似文献

Magnitude estimations of the warmth aroused by radiant stimulation of the forehead showed that warmth obeys the psychophysical power law when the’ duration of the stimulus is relatively long (3 or 6 sec). When duration is short (0.25, 0.5. or 1 sec), however, warmth grows as a more complex function of irradiation. The family of psychophysical functions measured for the various durations can be used to generate the rules by which radiant intensity and duration trade to preserve constant warmth. These rules vary systematically from complete temporal summation (i.e., complete reciprocity) near threshold to less and less complete summation as warmth level increases. When, however, the stimulus is expressed as an equivalent change of temperature in the skin, there is no summation, only adaptation. It can be shown that temporal summation observed psychophysically must result from the heat-transfer properties of skin tissue.  相似文献

The perception of briefly exposed visual forms is shown to be masked by an after- coming random pattern stimulus of approximately equal intensity. This effect occurs only under certain well defined conditions; it is limited by the minimum stimulus exposure time in excess of threshold which overcomes masking (critical stimulus duration) as well as by the minimum interval between presentation of the two stimuli which permits evasion of the masking action (critical interval). Over the range of stimulus duration in which masking occurs, critical interval varied with stimulus duration in such a way that the interval multiplied by the stimulus duration equals a constant. Critical stimulus duration and critical interval at threshold are shown to vary little under a variety of conditions. The effect of the random pattern stimulus is limited to the part of the visual field to which it is presented.  相似文献

Suprathreshold binocular contrast interactions were studied psychophysically. A split-screen CRT display was used to present separate sine-wave gratings to the observer’s left and right eyes. The method of constant stimuli and a modified method of adjustment were used to find sets of binoculartest patterns that matched a given binocularstandard. Test patterns consisted of the simultaneous presentation of sine-wave gratings that differed in contrast to the left and right eyes. Standard patterns consisted of identical sine-wave gratings presented to the two eyes, and had the same spatial frequency as the test patterns. Binocular contrast matching functions were obtained for several standard contrasts at 1 and 8 c/deg. Binocular matching functions were obtained for luminance increments as well. The binocular contrast matching functions departed from a simple binocular averaging rule, and behaved as if the eye receiving the higher contrast disproportionately dominated the binocular contrast percept. Departures from the binocular averaging rule were slightly greater for higher standard contrasts. Spatial frequency had little effect, and the luminance increment matching functions also departed from the binocular averaging rule. There was evidence for a contrast version of Fechner’s paradox and for substantial individual differences in a form of ocular dominance. In a further experiment, additivity of suprathreshold binocular contrast summation was examined by testing the double-cancellation condition. We found no systematic violations of additivity at 1 and 8 c/deg. Models of suprathreshold binocular contrast summation were examined.  相似文献

Amblyopia, a major cause of vision loss, is a developmental disorder of visual perception commonly associated with strabismus (squint). Although defined by a reduction in visual acuity, severe distortions of perceived visual location are common in strabismic amblyopia. These distortions can help us understand the cortical coding of visual location and its development in normal vision, as well as in amblyopia. The history of retinotopic mapping in the visual cortex highlights the potential impact of amblyopia. Theories of amblyopia include topological disarray of receptors in primary visual cortex, undersampling from the amblyopic eye compared with normal eyes, and the presence of anomalous retinal correspondence or multiple cortical representations of the strabismic fovea. We examined the distortions in a strabismic amblyope, using a pop-out localization task, in which normal observers made errors dependent on the visual context of the stimulus. The localization errors of the strabismic amblyope were abnormal. We found that none of the available theories could fully explain this one patient's localization performance. Instead, the observed behavior suggests that multiple adaptations of the underlying cortical topology are possible simultaneously in different parts of the visual field.  相似文献

The steady state of a simple reaction system has been shown to have some of the properties of a psychophysical discrimination system, including the possibility of deducing a generalized Weber-Fechner Law, both in integral form and in difference form. The Weber ratio so deduced is not constant, and its dependence on stimulus intensity is exhibited. The dependence of the difference limen on the internal threshold is discussed; it is found that in general there is a finite value of this threshold for which response is impossible. This critical threshold is lower for higher values of the reference stimulus intensity. Similarly, it is shown that the difference limen and the Weber ratio, for a fixed value of the threshold, become infinite (i.e., discrimination is impossible) for a value of the stimulus intensity which in general is finite.  相似文献

Olfactory adaptation and recovery to methyl isobutyl ketone at a concentration 10 times the absolute detection threshold (It o) was intensively studied in two human Ss. A combined psychophysical procedure was used that allowed comparisons of changes in threshold (It) with changes in the subjective intensity of suprathreshold stimuli. Information was also obtained on the effect of the adapting stimulus on the psychophysical power function for this odorant. A threshold detection procedure was used to estimate changes in It; an unstructured magnitude-estimation procedure was used to monitor changes in the subjective intensity of suprathreshold stimuli and the psychophysical power function. The data provided additional information on the behavioral course of olfactory adaptation and recovery and suggested that this combined method can be used profitably for further investigations of this kind. Complementary to the work of Cain and Engen (1969), the results suggested an increase in the exponent of the power function with increasing adaptation.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in tactile sensory system function between stutterers and normal speakers. This task was accomplished by studying possible tactile threshold shifts occurring during magnitude-estimation scaling of vibratory stimuli presented to the dorsal surface of the tongue. Ten normal speaking men (M age = 19.7 yr.) and 10 stutterers (M age = 25.9 yr.) participated. Analysis suggested that stutterers and normal speakers differ in terms of the responsiveness of the sensory mechanism for the lingual tactile threshold to vibratory stimulus intensities applied at suprathreshold levels. The stutterers and normal speakers performed similarly on all aspects of the magnitude-estimation scaling tasks, but the amount of threshold shift occurring during the scaling procedures was significantly greater for the stutterers at each suprathreshold intensity level employed.  相似文献

The question investigated in the experiments reported here was whether monocular background luminances sum during binocular fusion. Fusion was made explicit by using a random-dot stereogram (RDS) as a background stimulus. In the presence of the RDS, differential luminance thresholds were somewhat higher than in the uniform field: a full-field, binocular dot array acted as a mask for a full-field luminance change, but global depth had no effect at threshold. The amount of the binocular advantage at threshold was compared to the basic "threshold response," that is, the change in threshold resulting from raising the background luminance by a factor of 2. It was found that the amount of the binocular advantage was equivalent, on the average, to some 75% of the threshold response--significantly less than the 100% predicted by "simple summation." The amount of the binocular advantage varied substantially among observers and eyes, whereas the threshold response obeyed Weber's law in all cases: the variability was eye-, rather than threshold-dependent. Monocular thresholds did not decrease when taken with the nontest eye occluded rather than viewing a fused background. The proposition that the adaptation state of the visual system is increased during binocular fusion (Cogan, 1982) was not supported. Yet occluding the nontest eye, rather than presenting the test stimulus monocularly against a fused background, did change monocular thresholds in some eyes and observers. These findings are interpreted as evidence for a complex binocular background interaction involving both summation and inhibition.  相似文献

Binocular mixtures of equiluminous components of different wavelengths were matched with additive monoptic mixtures of the same components. After a satisfactory match had been achieved, the luminance of each colour in the monoptic mixture was measured photometrically. After presentation of an orthogonal grating superimposed on the colour shown to one eye, the colour matching was repeated. The grating induced a strong dominance of the colour with which it was combined. Yet the uncontoured colour was not entirely suppressed, but contributed to the binocular colour to various degrees. In three subjects with anisometropic amblyopia in one eye the colour presented to the amblyopic eye contributed little or nothing to the haploscopic colour mixture, depending on the degree of amblyopia. This diminished contribution could not be enhanced by a grid. In three cases with strabismic amblyopia and in one case with strabismus alternans no haploscopic colour mixture effects could be demonstrated. The observations are discussed in the context of neurophysiological findings in the visual system of primates, and it is suggested that colour and contour are not transmitted through independent channels from the retina to the cortex.  相似文献

Reaction times of subjects to threshold vibratory stimuli of various durations and frequencies were measured simultaneously with the thresholds in order to test whether more time is needed for the detection of stimuli of long than short duration at threshold intensities. Vibratory stimuli of 20 or 150 Hz frequency and 50, 150, or 300 ms duration were applied to the back of the hand. Lower detection thresholds and longer reaction times were obtained for both 20 and 150 Hz vibration with increase of stimulus duration. The results suggest that temporal summation of high frequencies is due to energy integration , whereas at low frequencies probability summation explains better the threshold decrement.  相似文献
