Attentional factors in visual field asymmetries.   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Over the past 30 years, numerous studies have reported left/right asymmetries in visual field performance, with performance generally superior in the right visual field for verbal tasks and in the left visual field for spatial tasks. These asymmetries parallel those found in neurological studies of hemispheric specialization. Consequently, many investigators have concluded that visual hemifield differences are primarily a reflection of the functional differences between the two cerebral hemispheres. However, alternative explanations proposing that visual field effects are dependent on other factors such as inadequate fixation, eye movements during presentation, postexposural scanning, and attentional biases have been offered. The potential impact of each of these factors on visual field differences are reviewed and discussed. Evidence is provided suggesting that attention and hemispheric functional differences interact to produce the magnitude and direction of visual field differences.  相似文献

ABSTRACT— Despite their interest in why people do what they do, psychologists typically overlook interest itself as a facet of human motivation and emotion. In recent years, however, researchers from diverse areas of psychology have turned their attention to the role of interest in learning, motivation, and development. This article reviews the emerging body of work on the psychology of interest, with an emphasis on what contemporary emotion research has learned about the subject. After considering four central questions—Is interest like other emotions? What functions does interest serve? What makes something interesting? Is interest merely another label for happiness?—the article considers unanswered questions and fruitful applications. Given interest's central role in cultivating knowledge and expertise, psychologists should apply research on interest to practical problems of learning, education, and motivation.  相似文献

Atlas College, a liberal arts institution, was founded during the middle of the nineteenth century. At that time the Board of Trustees adopted as the school's motto the maxim of the Roman poet Juvenal, mens sana in corpore sano, “a sound mind in a sound body.” The saying attracted little notice over the years, but several decades ago a recently appointed member of the board complained at a Trustees' meeting that, while attending a reception to greet members of the faculty, he had found to his dismay that the school's professors were not physically well-conditioned, most appearing either scrawny or corpulent. “How,” he inquired of his fellow Board members, “can these individuals exemplify the ideals of our College, if they fail to display soundness of body?”  相似文献

The existence and nature of asymmetries in the recognition of elements of a visually presented array have been topics of dispute. In the present study, 32 adults responded to a single vertical or horizontal bar embedded in one circle of a 5 times 7 array of circles by touching a plate corresponding to the orientation of the bar. Two thirds of the subjects were left superior, while one third were right superior. Performance was in general top superior and decreased with increasing distance from the center. Possible explanations for these asymmetries are examined in terms of sequential processing, acuity dominance, hemispheric specialization, and selective attention.  相似文献

The semantics of natural kind terms has recently been seen as a problem of reference. Kripke and Putnam have suggested that their meaning begins with rigid designation, with any further implications emerging after empirical study. I part ways with this approach and instead offer an account that focuses on the contribution that these terms make to the inferential roles of different sorts of sentences. I note that natural kind terms play an odd array of grammatical roles, both as subject and as parts of predicates, and explain why this dual role contributes something pragmatically significant to explanations of natural phenomena.  相似文献

This experiment extends our earlier work on individual differences in ear advantages for complex sounds (Lauter 1982, 1983, 1984) to examine the results of combined behavioral and qEEG testing in the same subjects. Results include: (1) between-subject differences in absolute values together with between-subject agreements in terms of relative values, observed both for ear advantages (EAs) and hemisphere advantages (HAs); (2) within-subject agreement between behavioral (EAs) and physiological (HAs) measures of asymmetries; and (3) preliminary findings related to the interpretation of qEEG asymmetry data, such as the influence of hand movements on auditory-cortex qEEG recordings, and persistence of activation effects in which asymmetries evoked during a stimulation condition may be reflected in resting asymmetries observed during a subsequent control condition.  相似文献

Visual feature extraction has been investigated using search experiments. Targets that contain a feature not present in the distractors are easier to detect than if they do not, leading to search asymmetries. If sounds are decomposed into features in the auditory system, there might be asymmetries in analogous tasks. Six experiments investigating this are described. Strong asymmetries were identified, with frequency-modulated targets easier to detect among pure-tone distractors than vice versa and longer sounds easier to select from short distractors than the reverse. It is demonstrated that this asymmetry is not a result of peripheral limitations. In contrast, no asymmetries were observed between high- and low-frequency tones or between short 3-tone sequences differing only in their temporal structure. The results are discussed with reference to models of perceptual grouping and attention, the applicability of analogies between vision and audition, and possible physiological correlates. The paradigm provides a new way in which to investigate auditory feature extraction.  相似文献

A perceptual exploration task involving three horizontal linear arrays of stimuli was administered to 167 children ranging in age from 3 to 7 yr. It was found that the well organized, predominantly right-to-left responses of very young children were eventually replaced by left-to-right patterns. A tachistoscopic test showed that Ss who gave right-to-left responses to the linear arrays showed hemispheric asymmetry of perception. The results were interpreted as supporting the view that directional response tendencies are related to hemispheric asymmetry.  相似文献

A soft contact-lens system for achieving unilateral visual stimulation in a free vision format is described. Initial testing with light transmittance and visual perimetry indicated that the lenses created artificial visual-field deficits. The efficacy of the lenses as a technique for lateralizing visual input was evaluated by examining within-subject differences in performance on two visuospatial tasks. Speed and accuracy of performance were greater with visual input directed to the right hemisphere. These data support the lens design as a useful alternative to tachistoscopic procedures and previous lens systems.  相似文献

In visual search, items defined by a unique feature are found easily and efficiently. Search for a moving target among stationary distractors is one such efficient search. Search for a stationary target among moving distractors is markedly more difficult. In the experiments reported here, we confirm this finding and further show that searches for a stationary target within a structured flow field are more efficient than searches for stationary targets among distractors moving in random directions. The structured motion fields tested included uniform direction of motion, a radial flow field simulating observer forward motion, and a deformation flow field inconsistent with observer motion. The results using optic flow stimuli were not significantly different from the results obtained with other structured fields of distractors. The results suggest that the local properties of the flow fields rather than global optic flow properties are important for determining the efficiency of search for a stationary target.  相似文献

Abstract

My aim in this paper is to defend the claim that the absolute idealism of Hegel is a liberal naturalist position against Sebastian Gardner’s claim that it is not genuinely naturalistic, and also to defend the position of ‘liberal naturalism’ from Ram Neta’s charge that there is no logical space for it to occupy. By ‘liberal naturalism’, I mean a doctrine which is a non-reductive form of philosophical naturalism. Like Fred Beiser, I take the thesis of liberal naturalism to find support in the idealism of Hegel. I begin by first explaining what philosophical naturalism amounts to. I then move on to show, using Finn Spicer’s and Alison Stone’s understandings of philosophical naturalism, how there is a stronger form of philosophical naturalism but also how there is a weaker form as well. Having established the distinction between stronger and weaker variants of philosophical naturalism, I discuss Sebastian Gardner’s recent objections to treating absolute idealism as a genuinely naturalist position. I argue that Gardner is incorrect to claim that absolute idealism is not a genuinely naturalist position on both historical and interpretive grounds, where to do so I bring in features of Hegel’s idealism to show that Hegel was committed to liberal naturalism. In the next section of the paper, I address Ram Neta’s charge that there is no logical space for liberal naturalism. To counter this claim, I offer an Hegelian diagnosis of Neta’s charge and argue that Neta’s concern about the possibility of liberal naturalism is illegitimately motivated.  相似文献

Serial-verbal short-term memory is impaired by irrelevant sound, particularly when the sound changes acoustically (the changing-state effect). In contrast, short-term recall of semantic information is impaired only by the semanticity of irrelevant speech, particularly when it is semantically related to the target memory items (the between-sequence semantic similarity effect). Previous research indicates that the changing-state effect is larger when the sound is presented to the left ear in comparison to the right ear, the left ear disadvantage. In this paper, we report a novel finding whereby the between-sequence semantic similarity effect is larger when the irrelevant speech is presented to the right ear in comparison to the left ear, but this right ear disadvantage is found only when meaning is the basis of recall (Experiments 1 and 3), not when order is the basis of recall (Experiment 2). Our results complement previous research on hemispheric asymmetry effects in cross-modal auditory distraction by demonstrating a role for the left hemisphere in semantic auditory distraction.  相似文献

Humans and other animals are highly sensitive to deviations from bilateral symmetry and prefer symmetric mates. Fluctuating asymmetries (FAs) are random deviations from perfect symmetry that can result from developmental instability. Human perceptions of facial asymmetry are driven by FAs and insensitive to directional asymmetries (DAs), which have a consistent direction of bias (e.g., left side always larger) across the population and are unrelated to developmental stability. We hypothesized that perceptual adaptation may filter out DAs and provide a proximate mechanism for this perceptual focus on FAs. We created a small population of faces with DAs by applying a unilateral distortion to the same side of each face. After 5 min of adaptation, (new) faces with these DAs looked less asymmetric and the most symmetric-looking distortion shifted toward the adapting asymmetry level. Parallel changes occurred for attractiveness. We suggest that perceptual adaptation may provide the proximate mechanism for an evolutionarily adaptive focus on FAs.  相似文献

Asymmetries, where response times differ depending on the order of two stimuli, have been widely used to explore fundamental aspects of perceptual processing. Given how much is made of asymmetries in the study of perception there has been surprisingly little research into the cognitive mechanisms that may underlie why comparing two objects in isolation depends on the order of presentation. In visual search, for example, asymmetries are typically attributed to fundamental processing characteristics as opposed to the inherent relation between two stimuli. However, one possible explanation for asymmetries found in perceptual processing is that similarity is important in the task and it is similarity itself that is asymmetric. In the current paper, we use a stimulus set for which the transformational account of similarity predicts asymmetries based on differences in transformational complexity. Using the fine-grained measure of reaction time we show that directional differences in transformation distance successfully predict asymmetries in the speed of matching two stimuli in sequence. The results are discussed in relation to the role of transformations in perceptual identification more generally, and how transformations could be revealing about how objects are compared in other experimental contexts where objects are compared directionally (e.g., visual search).  相似文献

Four experiments were carried out to investigate perceptual asymmetries in face recognition. Perceptual asymmetries favoring the half-face on the observer's left were found under free viewing conditions for both unfamiliar faces (Experiment 1) and famous faces (Experiment 3). For unfamiliar faces, this asymmetry was not obtained when fixation was controlled by presenting faces tachistoscopically (Experiment 2). For famous faces, the perceptual asymmetry favoring the half-face normally seen on the left did not appear to be retained in memory (Experiments 3 and 4). Asymmetries in face perception have been explained in terms of a direct access model of laterally effects. However, these results raise the possibility that asymmetric scanning or attentional factors may be important.  相似文献

SUMMARY

The author outlines an approach to assessment, or as she prefers to call it, psychoanalytic consultation, in the Health Service. This involves giving the patient an experience of the analytic process, which they can then assess in a way, while the assessor gains information about a number of categories that can be thought of hierarchically, which inform the advice given the patient and the referrer about management and treatment. The safety of the patient is paramount, as psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a powerful and disruptive treatment. However it is argued that, on the whole, ‘suitability for psychotherapy’ should be on the basis of exclusion rather than involving the patient passing a sort of ‘suitability test’. The latter may enable public psychotherapy services to deny the incompleteness of what they are able to offer.  相似文献
