Heart of DARCness

We propose a valid core for the much-disputed thesis that Deliberation Crowds Out Prediction, and identify terminological causes for some of the apparent disputes.     

Heart and spirit

In qualitative interview research with 25 psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists in London, Sydney and Melbourne, the author explored how these clinicians experienced, conceptualised and worked with spiritual issues. Bringing to bear their experience on both sides of the couch, this 'information-rich' sample of mainly senior practitioners reflected on a psychoanalytically informed view of spirituality, and its understanding in clinical practice. Two methods of analysis were used. The technique of 'narrative finding' was followed by coding of core ideas, themes and concepts expressed. Participants noted that spirit may be the 'blind spot' of psychoanalysis, and reflected that what they had wanted in their own analyses-and consider that what patients want-is to be able to have spiritual issues addressed in a similar manner to other matters, not prejudged as infantile or pathological. In participants' concepts and experience of spirit, a comfort / challenge dimension was identified. Comfort was taken in having a 'wider view', a more inclusive sense of inter-relatedness, with challenge involving a heightened sense of the unknown and a greater degree of uncertainty.

SUMMARY

This work challenges therapists to look at themselves and their beliefs regarding affairs. The work also examines common illogical beliefs in regards to extradyadic involvement. The reader is challenged to examine the underlying dynamic of extradyadic relationships and how their own biases affect how they view clients and work with the dyad.     

Art from the Heart

Abstract

This article describes art therapy techniques grounded in a relational-cultural approach used in a middle school group for girls. Art from the Heart is an interactive preventive intervention designed to facilitate increased connections among group members. It is intended to bring together multiethnic groups of urban girls with complex relational histories to learn about growth-fostering relationships, without relying on sophisticated verbal abilities. Specific techniques encourage the expression of “feeling thoughts” and other interpersonal dynamics that do not lend themselves well to words. The interactive nature of the art projects creates a context where interpersonal disconnections can be explored and understood, and connections can be celebrated, both by talking and by making art.     

My Heart Made Me Do It: Children's Essentialist Beliefs About Heart Transplants

Psychological essentialism is a folk theory characterized by the belief that a causal internal essence or force gives rise to the common outward behaviors or attributes of a category's members. In two studies, we investigated whether 4‐ to 7‐year‐old children evidenced essentialist reasoning about heart transplants by asking them to predict whether trading hearts with an individual would cause them to take on the donor's attributes. Control conditions asked children to consider the effects of trading money with an individual. Results indicated that children reasoned according to essentialism, predicting more transfer of attributes in the transplant condition versus the non‐bodily money control. Children also endorsed essentialist transfer of attributes even when they did not believe that a transplant would change the recipient's category membership (e.g., endorsing the idea that a recipient of a pig's heart would act pig‐like, but denying that the recipient would become a pig). This finding runs counter to predictions from a strong interpretation of the “minimalist” position, an alternative to essentialism.

Twelve-Year-Old Face,Holy Heart

This is a poem seeking to capture the sacredness of deep human connection, in this instance, between the author and a twelve-year-old girl whom he meets in the presence of her mother. The poem integrates these types of human encounters with biblical understandings and dynamics of divine manifestations in human beings and human relationships.

最近新发现的纳米细菌是目前已知的最小的细菌,其直径为几十至几百纳米.与其它细菌不同,它们是一种生长繁殖缓慢,能通过普通滤菌器(0.2um),吴有生物矿化作用和一定抗辐射能力,革兰氏染色阴性的球形细菌.它们最特殊的生物学特性是可以在生理状态的钙、磷浓度下分泌主要由羟磷石灰碳酸盐构成的保护性外壳.因此,它们被认为与机体内病理性钙化密切相关.近年来研究发现,它们可能是冠心病的一种感染性致病源.抗纳米细菌治疗的临床实验显示在冠心病患者中具有一定疗效.     

The Burden Left My Heart

Abstract

This paper presents psychosocial services for displaced women living in the war zones. Two study groups were formed from two cities in Croatia, Zenica and Tuzla. The services were designed to ameliorate distress and improve psychosocial functioning. A questionnaire-based evaluation indicated that highly distressed women derived greater benefit from group psychotherapy (Tuzla) than did the group who participated in occupational activities (Zenica).
