This article looks at the current theological understanding and practice of evangelism in the United Methodist Church. In the early 2000s, the denomination crafted and adopted the mission statement “Make Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World.” As someone who has worked at both the local church and denominational levels of the United Methodist Church, I have seen a gap between the denomination's stated mission and the actual ministry of local churches due to two primary obstacles. Congregations are unsure of what it entails to make disciples and do not understand that the purpose is for the transformation of the world. Through interviews and the study of local congregations, impediments to fulfilling this statement emerged. The article concludes by offering an example of an outlier congregation that is effectively engaged in life‐affirming evangelism in an urban setting. 相似文献

As an essential contributor to the scientific understanding of mental health and illness, psychology continues to be the leading discipline receiving National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) research support. Future behavioral science research initiatives at NIMH are likely to emphasize cognitive science, behavioral genetics, behavioral patterns and physiological systems, and personality, motivation, emotion, and interpersonal processes. Although prognostication is particularly risky in times of transition such as the present, advocacy efforts focused on mental-illness-related research are most likely to help the NIMH and the field if they avoid polarization and factionalization by providing equal encouragement for studies of biological aspects, of behavioral aspects, and of their interaction. 相似文献

Takasuna (Integr. Physiol. Behav. Sci. 41, 2007) mentioned the ease with which evolutionary theory was accepted by Japanese psychologists, and certainly this is admirable.
He also mentioned the stubborn force which had to be used to gain an understanding of the (thoroughly Western) subjective–objective
distinction. Alas, during the formative years of Japanese psychology, there was much philosophical work afoot attempting to
destroy that distinction. It is speculated that only a small change of which books were translated, or with which Americans
early Japanese psychologists trained under, would have made Japan into a haven for these still underdog theories. 相似文献

This article outlines the need for a critical health psychology and how this approach was originally formulated as a challenge to mainstream health psychology. Critical health psychology articulates the need for a more reflexive approach – one that is able to analyse the complex moral, emotional, ethical and political issues underpinning peoples’ experiences of health and illness. This article discusses how critics have responded to the development of critical health psychology, to debates regarding what actually constitutes a critical approach, and finally, to how critical approaches might be refined in future research. 相似文献

This article is based on the opening presentation by the author to the Association of Psychologists in Academic Health Centers’
5th National Conference, “Preparing Psychologists for a Rapidly Changing Healthcare Environment” held in March, 2011. Reviewing
the patient protection and affordable care act (ACA), that presentation was designed to set the stage for several days of
symposia and discussions anticipating upcoming changes to the healthcare system. This article reviews the ACA; general trends
that have impacted healthcare reform; the implications of the Act for psychology’s workforce including the growing focus on
interprofessional education, training, and practice, challenges to address in order to prepare for psychology’s future; and
recommendations for advocating for psychology’s future as a healthcare profession. 相似文献

Marital separation and divorce are associated with increased risk for early death, and the magnitude of this association rivals that of many well‐established public health factors. In the case of divorce, however, the mechanisms explaining precisely why and how some people are at risk for early death remain unclear. This paper reviews what is known about the association between divorce and risk for all‐cause mortality, then discusses four emerging themes: the biological intermediaries linking divorce to pathophysiology and disease onset, moving beyond the statistical mean, focusing research on the diathesis‐stress model, and studying how opportunity foreclosures may place people on a trajectory toward poor distal health outcomes. These ideas are grounded in a set of public lay commentaries about the association between divorce and death; in this way, the paper seeks to integrate current research ideas with how the general public thinks about divorce and its correlates. Although this paper focuses on divorce, many of the emerging themes are applicable to the study of psychosocial stress and health more generally. Therefore, the study of divorce and death provides a good case study for health psychology and considers new questions that can be pursued in a variety of research areas. 相似文献

Abstract Although numerous measures of coping have been presented in the literature, many suffer from methodological flaws. This article argues that efforts to improve coping assessment should not be limited to enhancing psychometric quality, since methodological shortcomings reflect more basic underlying conceptual problems of the coping constud. TWO types of problems in coping assessment are discussed, based on a review of well-known coping measures. The first concerns conceptual issues, such as the process versus trait approach to cop ing and the lack of clear theoretical guidelines for systematic exploration of the appropriate measurement level and number of coping dimensions. He second concerns the issue of developing appropriate techniques to evaluate psychometric properties of proass measures of coping. Several recommendations for improving the quality of coping assessment are suggested. 相似文献

This article begins by contextualizing specialization and board certification of psychologists, with attention paid to relevant
definitions and expectations of other health care professionals. A brief history of specialization and board certification
in professional psychology is offered. The benefits of board certification through the American Board of Professional Psychology
are highlighted. Consideration is then given to the primary reasons for psychologists working in academic health sciences
centers to specialize in the current health care climate and to obtain board certification as a mark of such specialization. 相似文献

The Institute of Medicine has reviewed and made recommendations concerning current teaching approaches, content, and barriers
to the incorporation of behavioral/social sciences in medical school curricula (Cuff & Vanselow, 2004). This paper discusses
those recommendations, the history of medical education reform, the barriers to and evolution of behavioral/social sciences’
inclusion, and the implications for psychology’s future role in academic medicine. Psychological concepts and technology permeate
medical practice, but little progress has been made in integrating psychological and biological sciences. Looking to its basic
science domains (e.g. cognition, learning, development, neuroscience), psychology can take scientific leadership in illuminating
the mechanisms by which behavioral/social processes interact with biological functions in health, thereby providing the empirical
basis for a truly integrated bio-behavioral curriculum.
This article is based upon a symposium, “IOM Report on Enhancing Behavioral & Social Science in Medical Education: Impact
and Opportunities for Psychology,” presented at the Annual meeting of the American Psychological Association, Washington,

Corporate planners acknowledge that productivity is directly related to employee mental health. This recognition is reflected by the recent upsurge of corporate in-house, human resource programs. Although their latent function may be economic rather than humanitarian, these programs nevertheless provide psychological assistance for problems considered to be normal episodes of human development. Counseling psychologists may be the best equipped to work with a corporate clientele because, unlike the clinician, the counselor is trained to work with healthy, instead of disturbed, personalities. Most of the developmental crises encountered by the corporate psychologist are associated with stress, midlife, or career development. 相似文献
