Critique,Ethics, and the Apparatus of Experience: A Foucauldian Framework

The paper explores examples of contemporary experience in order to demonstrate the moralisation of new areas of behaviour (especially in relation to environmental issues).It sketches a Foucauldian framework for understanding the historical transformation of experience,in terms of the "apparatus of experience." On that basis,it presents a novel account of critique,in which critique is seen as the potentially transformational,experiential practice of re-experiencing the contemporary apparatuses of experience.In other words,critique is "experience squared." It is this re-experiencing of our everyday experience that permits us,to a certain extent,to "get over ourselves" and thus to reflect critically on the processes of moralisation and de-moralisation in which we participate.

A Framework for Intervention in Marital Conflicts over Family Finances: A View from Africa

One chief source of marital distress and pathology in today's Africa is the issue of which way to go on the sensitive matter of how to control and manage the family's finances, and who, of the two parties in a given marriage, is to contribute what to the upkeep of that marriage. This problem results from the collapse of the traditional African family economics which saw the husband as the chief breadwinner of the family and the wife, the director of the general family services, and the emergence in its place these days, of wage-earning family households. Here, a total crisis that arises is where the two parties concerned fail to introduce equity-based considerations in the settlement of the tension presented. In that case, the danger to be faced is the development of polarization and hassles to destabilize the family. This paper presents a research report suggesting how this danger can be averted.

Sustainability is value laden, and achieving sustainability is constrained by conflict and inefficient problem solving. Sustainability requires minimizing the costs of both constraints. This article outlines a framework for sustainability that recognizes divergent values, improves the productivity of debate, and suggests how to reduce sustainability costs.     

Person-Placement Congruence: A Framework for Vocational Counselors

A common guideline for vocational counseling is the rule requiring congruence between a man and his job. The issue of person-placement congruence was studied utilizing 159 patients referred for vocational rehabilitation to the Mental Health and Manpower Project from the Fort Logan Mental Health Center. A 13-item scale devised by project research staff and completed by vocational counselors was shown to predict later job success. By separating the scale into two categories, those items dealing with abilities and those related to needs, it was possible to predict the nature of job termination, i.e., quit or was fired. There was demonstrated considerable validity for the man-job fit approach to counseling, and this research served as an initial step toward detailing this rather simple rule.     

Strategies for Counseling Midcareer Changers: A Conceptual Framework

Collaborative Helping: A Practice Framework for Family-Centered Services

This article offers a framework for collaborative family-centered practice that can reinvigorate our work with families who have not responded to more traditional approaches. Collaborative Helping is grounded in family-centered principles that include: striving for cultural curiosity, believing in resourcefulness, working in partnership, and making our work more accountable to the clients we serve. The article introduces collaborative inquiry as an organizing metaphor for clinical practice and offers a five-step practice framework with clinical illustrations and sample questions. A Model for Predicting Computer Experience from Attitudes Toward Computers

This study examined the relationship between locus of control, two sets of beliefs about computers as electronic performance monitors, general computer attitudes, and computer experience. Results support a model in which computer attitudes mediate the relationship between an individual's locus of control and computer experience and between monitoring beliefs about computers and computer experience.

The development of Genetic Counseling Milestones may provide a valuable tool to assess genetic counseling students across all program activities. Historical educational context, current practices, and potential benefits and challenges in the development of Genetic Counseling Milestones are discussed.     

A Framework for Sex Role Counseling

The androgyny model of masculinity and femininity serves as the basis for a framework for sex role counseling applicable to both sexes. A conceptualization of individual differences in sex role-related characteristics suggests criteria for personal sex role adjustment other than universal conformity to traditional sex role requirements. It is suggested that consistency among an individual's feminine and masculine self-attributions, sex role ideals, environmental demands with their accompanying rewards and costs, and the behavioral repertoire available for dealing with current situations is needed for a comfortable sense of self as a woman or man. Examples of sex role problems, counseling goals, and interventions are described within this framework. Sex role counseling thus requires a clear comprehension of the impact of sex roles on a personal level.
