Pointing accuracy with an unseen hand to a just-extinguished visual target was examined in various eye movement conditions. When subjects caught the target by a saccade, they showed about the same degree of accuracy as that shown in pointing to a visible target. On the other hand, when subjects tracked a moving target by a pursuit eye movement, they systematically undershot when subsequently pointing to the target. The differential effect of the two types of eye movements on pointing tasks was examined on both the preferred and non-preferred hands, and it was found that the effect of eye movements was more prominent on the preferred hand than on the non-preferred hand. The results are discussed in relation to outflow eye position information.  相似文献

We hypothesize that if people are motivated by a particular social preference, then choosing in accordance with this preference will lead to an identifiable pattern of eye movements. We track eye movements while subjects make choices in simple three‐person distribution experiments. We characterize each choice in terms of three different types of social preferences: efficiency, maxi‐min, and envy. For the characterization, we use either the choice data or the eye movement data. The evidence indicates that distributional choices are broadly consistent with the choice rule implied by eye movements. In other words, what subjects appear to be interested in when you look at their choices corresponds to what they appear to be interested in when you look at their eye movements. Three experiments were performed using an aperture-viewing technique to assess the accuracy of shape perception when subjects were required to emit eye movements in order to pick up shape information, compared with the accuracy of shape perception when subjects were not required to emit eye movements in order to pick up the same shape information. In two of the three experiments, we also tried to elicit two different kinds of eye movements which have been suggested as being differentially useful for the processing of shape information. All three experiments explored whether the usefulness of eye movements varied as a function of age. The results of all three experiments indicate that the accuracy of shape perception improves with age under aperture-viewing conditions. The conditions in which eye movements were required to pick up the shape information led to an improvement in the processing of the shape information. This improvement seems to be about the same for both of the eye movement conditions and for all of the age groups tested (4.6 years through 21.7 years).  相似文献

Dodge, in 1916, suggested that the French term 'saccade' should be used for describing the rapid movements of the eyes that occur while reading. Previously he had referred to these as type I movements. Javal had used the term 'saccade' in 1879, when describing experiments conducted in his laboratory by Lamare. Accordingly, Javal has been rightly credited with assigning the term to rapid eye movements. In English these rapid rotations had been called jerks, and they had been observed and measured before Lamare's studies of reading. Rapid sweeps of the eyes occur as one phase of nystagmus; they were observed by Wells in 1792 who used an afterimage technique, and they were illustrated by Crum Brown in 1878. Afterimages were used in nineteenth-century research on eye movements and eye position; they were also employed by Hering in 1879, to ascertain how the eyes moved during reading. In the previous year, Javal had employed afterimages in his investigations of reading, but this was to demonstrate that the eyes moved horizontally rather than vertically. Hering's and Lamare's auditory method established the discontinuous nature of eye movements during reading, and the photographic methods introduced by Dodge and others in the early twentieth century enabled their characteristics to be determined with greater accuracy.  相似文献

The accuracy of movements of the arm directed toward a point in space was investigated in healthy human subjects. To study the influence of the eye movement itself, on the guidance of the arm in the absence of any visual context, subjects performed the goal-directed arm movements without visual feedback about the arm displacement and the target position. The subjects were asked either to keep their eyes centered or oriented toward a previously flashed target. The analysis of the distribution of the errors in arm final position in the two conditions suggests that the eye movement influences the final position adopted by the arm. It is postulated that an interaction exists between the eye and arm systems during the motor program elaboration phase.  相似文献

Two experiments are described in which subjects attempted to locate a specified target word in a short text using a cursor controlled by a computer mouse pointing device. The task was performed at screen refresh rates of 50 Hz, 75 Hz, and 100 Hz. In Experiment 1, both the timing and accuracy of the cursor movement was influenced by screen pulsation. During the early phase of the movement, performance was worse at 100 Hz, whereas in the later, visually guided phase, performance was worse at 50 Hz. In Experiment 2, eye movements were recorded as the task was performed. The results show that the cursor movement is typically preceded by an eye movement and that subjects do not directly inspect the cursor in the early stages of its movement. In the later phase of the movement the cursor is tracked for considerable periods of time. The data suggest that adverse effects of screen pulsation on the control of cursor movement are inherited from penalties incurred during the process of target computation but may also be influenced by concurrent eye movements.  相似文献

A computer system was developed to measure and record locus and duration of the eye axis of gaze using a limbus reflection technique. System hardware and operating procedures for on-line data collection and correction are described. Algorithms are presented that separate fixations from movements. Based on these algorithms, system performance was measured in terms of spatial accuracy of eye fixations and temporal accuracy of saccadic movements.  相似文献

This study tested effects of gaze-movement angle and extraretinal eye movement information on performance in a locomotion control task. Subjects hovered in a virtual scene to maintain position against optically simulated gusts. Gaze angle was manipulated by varying the simulated camera pitch orientation. Availability of extraretinal information was manipulated via simulated-pursuit fixation. In Experiment 1, subjects performed better when the camera faced a location on the ground than when it pointed toward the horizon. Experiment 2 tested whether this gain was influenced by availability of appropriate eye movements. Subjects performed slightly better when the camera pointed at nearby than at distant terrain, both in displays that did and in displays that did not simulate pursuit fixation. This suggested that subjects could perform the task using geometric image transformations, with or without appropriate eye movements. Experiment 3 tested more rigorously the relative importance of gaze angle and extraretinal information over a greater range of camera orientations; although subjects could use image transformations alone to control position adequately with a distant point of regard, they required eye movements for optimal performance when viewing nearby terrain.  相似文献

Research on eye movements during reading and scene perception is briefly reviewed. It is quite clear that cognitive variables influence how long readers look at words and where they look next. There are also clearly some differences in eye movements between Chinese and Western readers. However, for the most part it appears that there are more similarities than differences and that what differences do occur are due more to differences in the nature of the written orthography than due to cultural differences. There are also clearly cognitive influences on eye movements during scene viewing. Research from my lab is reviewed which challenges the view that culture influences eye movements during scene viewing. While we do not deny that there are cultural influences on cognition and thinking, it seems to be the case that cultural differences do not influence properties of the oculomotor system resulting in differences in where subjects look early in scenes.  相似文献

White (1976) reported that presentation of a masking stimulus during a pursuit eye movement interfered with the perception of a target stimulus that shared the same spatial, rather than retinal, coordinates as the mask. This finding has been interpreted as evidence for the existence of spatiotopic visual persistence. We doubted White's results because they implied a high degree of position constancy during pursuit eye movements, contrary to previous research, and because White did not monitor subjects' eye position during pursuit; if White's subjects did not make continuous pursuit eye movements, it might appear that masking was spatial when in fact it was retinal. We attempted to replicate White's results and found that when eye position was monitored to ensure that subjects made continuous pursuit movements, masking was retinal rather than spatial. Subjects' phenomenal impressions also indicated that retinal, rather than spatial, factors underlay performance in this task. The implications of these and other results regarding the existence of spatiotopic visual persistence are discussed.  相似文献

Subjects who make repetitive saccadic eye movements before a memory test subsequently exhibit superior retrieval in comparison with subjects who do not move their eyes. It has been proposed that eye movements enhance retrieval by increasing interaction of the left and right cerebral hemispheres. To test this, we compared the effect of eye movements on subsequent recall (Experiment 1) and recognition (Experiment 2) in two groups thought to differ in baseline degree of hemispheric interaction—individuals who are strongly right-handed (SR) and individuals who are not (nSR). For SR subjects, who naturally may experience less hemispheric interaction than nSR subjects, eye movements enhanced retrieval. In contrast, depending on the measure, eye movements were either inconsequential or even detrimental for nSR subjects. These results partially support the hemispheric interaction account, but demand an amendment to explain the harmful effects of eye movements for nSR individuals.  相似文献

Within the context of credibility assessment, the impact of behavioral and physiological adaptation and response patterns of truly and falsely testifying eyewitnesses was examined in a laboratory study. It was further examined statements concerning characteristics of the delict and the experimental situation itself. 20 subjects were instructed to truly or falsely testify after having witnessed a willful destruction. Eye movements, respiration, heart rate and skin conductance were recorded and analyzed by computer. Witnesses instructed to falsely testify showed elevated skin conductance responses and an increased variability of horizontal eye movements at the beginning of the session. Additionally, they also showed stronger responses in eye-blink rate, respiration rate and variability of skin conductance and heart rate to questions related to the behavior in the experimental situation. Reactivity to questions concerning the culprit was less pronounced. Results are discussed in terms of their application within the German law system.  相似文献

The relationship between saccadic eye movements and covert orienting of visual spatial attention was investigated in two experiments. In the first experiment, subjects were required to make a saccade to a specified location while also detecting a visual target presented just prior to the eye movement. Detection accuracy was highest when the location of the target coincided with the location of the saccade, suggesting that subjects use spatial attention in the programming and/or execution of saccadic eye movements. In the second experiment, subjects were explicitly directed to attend to a particular location and to make a saccade to the same location or to a different one. Superior target detection occurred at the saccade location regardless of attention instructions. This finding shows that subjects cannot move their eyes to one location and attend to a different one. The results of these experiments suggest that visuospatial attention is an important mechanism in generating voluntary saccadic eye movements.  相似文献

The effect of contextual constraint on eye movements in reading was examined by asking subjects to read sentences that contained a target word that varied in contextual constraint; high-, medium-, or low-constraint target words were used. Subjects fixated low-constraint target words longer than they did either high- or medium-constraint target words. In addition, they skipped high-constraint words more than they did either medium- or low-constraint target words. The results further confirm that contextual constraint has a strong influence on eye movements during reading.  相似文献

Torsional eye movements are triggered by head tilt and a rotating visual field. We examined whether attention to a misoriented form could also induce torsion. Thirty-six observers viewed an adapting field containing a bright vertical Une, and then they viewed a display that was composed of two misoriented words (one rotated clockwise, the other counterclockwise, by 15°, 30°, or 45°). The subjects were instructed to attend to one of the words. The subjects’ adjustments of a reference line to match the tilt of the afterimage showed that attention to a misoriented word produces torsional eye movement (verified with direct measurements on 4 additional subjects). This eye movement reduces the retinal misorientation of the word by about 1°. The results of this study reinforce the linkage between selective attention and eye movements and may provide a useful tool for dissecting different forms of “mental rotation” and other adjustments in internal reference frames. This experiment tested whether the perceived stability of the environment is altered when there is a combination of eye and visually open-loop hand movements toward a target displaced during the eye movements, i.e., during saccadic suppression. Visual-target eccentricity randomly decreased or increased during eye movements and subjects reported whether they perceived a target displacement or not, and if so, the direction of the displacement. Three experimental conditions, involving different combinations of eye and arm movements, were tested: (a) eye movements only; (b) simultaneous eye and rapid arm movements toward the target; and (c) simultaneous eye and arm movements with a restraint blocking the arm as soon as the hand left the starting position. The perceptual threshold of target displacements resulting in an increased target eccentricity was greater when subjects combined eye and arm movements toward the target object, specially for the no-restraint condition. Subjects corrected most of their arm trajectory toward the displaced target despite the short movement times (average MT = 189 ms). After the movements, the null error feedback of the hand's final position presumably overlapped the retino-oculomotor signal error and could be responsible for the deficient perception of target displacements. Thus, subjects interpreted the terminal hand positions as being within the range of the endpoint variability associated with the production of rapid arm movements rather than as a change of the environment. These results suggest that a natural strategy adopted for processing spatial information, especially in a competing situation, could favour a constancy tendency, avoiding systematic perception of a change of environment for any noise or variability at the central or peripheral levels.  相似文献

On-line eye movement recording of 12 subjects who read short stories on a cathode ray tube enabled a test of direct control and preprogramming models of eye movements in reading. Contingent upon eye position, a mask was displayed in place of the letters in central vision after each saccade, delaying the onset of the stimulus in each eye fixation. The duration of the delay was manipulated in fixed or randomized blocks. Although the length of the delay strongly affected the duration of the fixations, there was no difference due to the conditions of delay manipulation, indicating that fixation duration is under direct control. However, not all fixations were lengthened by the period of the delay. Some ended while the mask was still present, suggesting they had been preprogrammed. But these "anticipation" eye movements could not have been completely determined before the fixation was processed because their fixation durations and saccade lengths were affected by the spatial extent of the mask, which varied randomly. Neither preprogramming nor existing serial direct control models of eye guidance can adequately account for these data. Instead, a model with direct control and parallel programming of saccades is proposed to explain the data and eye movements in reading in general.  相似文献
