True Simplicity

ABSTRACT

The goal of this bibliography is to present a carefully selected bibliography of source material designed to introduce both scholars and casual researchers to all facets of the Shaker experience. Following the examination of a broad array of reference works, monographs, journal articles, and Websites which discuss the Shakers, a subset of high-quality works was selected to represent the history, culture, theology, and art of this important American religious movement. This bibliography can serve as a gateway into the Shaker universe for researchers while also assisting librarians interested in building a collection of Shaker-related materials. Popular and scholarly interest in the Shakers continues to grow even as the movement itself slowly disappears from the scene. This bibliography makes a unique contribution by guiding readers to the best sources on all aspects of Shakerism, not just their history and beliefs but also the architecture and handcrafts that have proven so inspirational to contemporary American art. The curious can start by exploring the reference works included here, while scholars can use the handpicked scholarly works as a foundation for further research.     

An Annotated Bibliography of Protestant Theological Writings on Angels in Post-Reformation Thought from 1565 to 1739

Abstract

The annotated bibliography, comprised of fifty-five works by fifty-one authors and 3,242 pages (1,096 in Latin and 2,146 in English) of writings directly related to angelology, is arranged in chronological order. It is preceded by a Specifications Statement, which describes the domain, scope, selection process, organization and editorial practices of the bibliography. The selected works are representative of an array of Protestant confessional groups including the Anglican, Arminian, Calvinist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Puritan, and Remonstrant traditions. Designed to ease the task of conducting research on angelology as it relates to post-Reformation literature, it provides a useful bibliographical tool to scholars of historical theology, historians of Reformation, Renaissance and Enlightenment thought, and those with interdisciplinary interests.     

Teaching Violence Prevention

Summary

This paper defines violence from a Public Health perspective. It offers recommendations for creating a curriculum to teach health professionals about the critical issues involved in establishing a more peaceful society. Specific learning objectives, teaching methods, and examples of group discussion activities are presented, as well as an extensive bibliography. The intention is to make available to health professionals information that promotes an understanding of the overall impact of violence in our society, and specific skills in the recognition and management of victims of violence. Because of the importance of domestic violence as the center of the web of violence in our culture, emphasis is placed on understanding the dynamics and effects of this specific form of violent behavior. Teaching violence prevention occupies a critical role for medical education.     

Part III: Short Papers from the Course

ABSTRACT

At the end of each class, we ask students to write either an annotated bibliographic essay on a psychoanalytic subject of their choosing or a short paper. We include here three examples of the kind of work we receive. The first is an annotated bibliography written by Monica Black, a drama major, who has been “play-acting” since childhood and who is now a serious actress, exploring the question of “Why Perform?” She wrote the paper when she was a sophomore. The second is written by Becca Stine, a junior creative writing major, who, when she saw Waiting for Godot at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, had moving insights about her relation with her sister, insights that were enhanced by the psychoanalytic reading we did in relation to the drama. The third, by first-year neuroscience major Peter Lehman, is an annotated bibliography that seeks to understand how neurobiology and psychoanalysis can best intersect.     

Gerontology and Religion

Summary

This annotated bibliography provides resources for librarians in theological schools and in gerontology programs. It is divided into two sections: (1) Gerontology and Applied Practices; and (2) Theological Disciplines and Clergy Practices. A careful review of these useful annotations should guide the acquisition of significant materials for programs in religion and gerontology.     

A modal sequent calculus for a fragment of arithmetic

Global properties of canonical derivability predicates (the standard example is Pr() in Peano Arithmetic) are studied here by means of a suitable propositional modal logic GL. A whole book [1] has appeared on GL and we refer to it for more information and a bibliography on GL. Here we propose a sequent calculus for GL and, by exhibiting a good proof procedure, prove that such calculus admits the elimination of cuts. Most of standard results on GL are then easy consequences: completeness, decidability, finite model property, interpolation and the fixed point theorem.The second author holds a grant from the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, gruppo G.N.S.A.G.A.

SUMMARY

This article provides a brief annotated bibliography of resources for working with same-sex couples. We provide summaries of articles, book chapters, books, and web sites which we have found to be particularly helpful in working with same sex couples. Books covered include those targeted to therapists as well as those targeted to clients (self-help and bibliotherapy books).

The Translation Issues in the Gender Inclusive Controversy

Abstract

The recently published Today's New International Versionhas received some criticism, especially from The Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, which argues that the TNIVhas gone beyond translation to interpretation in order to further feminist causes. The present author argues that the differences between the TNIVand NIVare standard translation issues, highlighting three key points with illustrations, establishing a case for the superiority of “gender inclusive” translations such as the TNIV. A bibliography for study on both sides is included.     

Religious Research in Gerontology, 1980–1994: A Systematic Review

ABSTRACT

This article presents results of an NIA-funded systematic review of research on religion and aging published from 1980–1994 in mainstream gerontology and religion journals, including the Journal of Religious Gerontology. Findings are summarized from 73 empirical studies, a subset of the 115 articles included in NIA's bibliography on this topic. In general, these studies use multiethnic samples, include multiple religious dimensions, and focus on age comparative analyses and on analyses of religious effects on life satisfaction, health, and well-being. Also summarized is gerontological research on patterns, predictors, outcomes, and measures of religious involvement, and an agenda for future research is proposed.

This article presents a bibliography of essays from the Christ in the Classroom collection, organized by subject. The essays focus on various aspects of the intersection of faith and academic fields of study. This article presents the subject index for volumes 21 through 40 of the collection, including volumes produced in the French, Portuguese, and Spanish languages. Orthodox Worship

Abstract

This article attempts to convey both the riches of the experience of Orthodox Christian worship and the wealth of materials used in the liturgical celebration. There will be a discussion of the setting, the temple, and the modes of participation in the worship experience. The place of the senses in the experience will be noted, along with a sampling of the texts used. The article also contains a full discussion of the many liturgical texts required. An annotated bibliography of books and list of websites, together with a select glossary, are included.     

Evangelicals in Defense of Hell—An Annotated Bibliography with Extended Introduction

ABSTRACT

In the last decade, debate about hell among evangelicals has increased significantly. This paper summarizes that debate as it has taken place over the past decade and particularly in the last six years. It furnishes an annotated bibliography of items by evangelicals, at least partly about evangelicals, dealing with the eternal destiny of unbelievers. It defines the four alternatives, briefly traces the developing history of the debate, notes the leading participants, summarizes the issues which they raise, and calls attention to the major arguments used for and against the various positions. Since the major contenders at the moment are the traditional view of eternal conscious punishing and conditional immortality, they will receive the bulk of the attention.

Works By and About Gabriel Marcel

The bibliography of any contemporary philosopher is destined to be incomplete before it is ever published and the following is no exception. One guiding principle has been used throughout in the preparation of this bibliography: to provide readers with a guide which, though not exhaustive, does provide a good starting point for the serious study of the philosophy of Gabriel Marcel. Those works which contain comprehensive bibliographies to a certain date are listed as such. Roger Troisfontaines' De l'existence à l'être, for example, contains an exhaustive bibliography of Marcel's works to the date of its publication and this fact is noted in the entry below. It is always best to read a philosopher in his original language. For the convenience of the English-speaking reader however, the more important works of Gabriel Marcel are listed in the translation whenever possible. The books and articles written about Gabriel Marcel must obviously be listed in the language in which they appear in print.     

Spiritual Dimension of Human Sexuality

SUMMARY

The quest for spiritual maturity may be likened to a spiritual odyssey. This paper represents research concerning the spiritual dimension of human sexuality. Diminishment and loss are givens of the senior years. Loss is exacerbated in relationships defined by fidelity and commitment.

Four headings outline the paper; an extensive bibliography supports and documents the essays. End to Innocence: we are next. Common parlance dwells on myths of aging, while (here are distinct realities of aged sexuality. Loneliness can be devastating; there must be more creative societal responses to the human condition of old and alone. Love Revisited: read, sexual desire and love. Historical perspective re-examines eros and agape, literature, which is bigger than life, is a much neglected resource – and an illuminating one. When confronting mystery, the poet and novelist may provide the language we need to comprehend the phenomenon of love (and grace). Human Sexuality and Spirituality; Hebrew-Christian and Eastern religions (Taoism and Tantric Sex) have somewhat to say in terms of sexuality and spiritual pilgrimage. Acquiescence: human values of touching, intimacy, friendship, and vulnerability must be considered.
