Six subjects participated in a reaction time (RT) task in which the stimulus events consisted of two sinusoidal waves presented in close succession. The leading stimulus (S1) had a duration of 25 msec while the binary reaction stimulus (S2) was 250 msec. Presentation of the interstimulus interval (ISI) was irregular. S1 as well as S2 varied in intensity and were assigned randomly the values of 45, 68, 85 and 105 db (SPL). RT to S2 was examined as a function of the intensity of both stimuli. Generally RT varied inversely with the intensity of S1 and the downward gradient of RT with ISI became steepened at least for ISIs shorter than 200–250 msec. Concerning S2, RT grew shorter as the intensity increased up to 85 db. Probably due to startle, RT tended to lengthen at S2 = 105 db. When both S1 and S2 were 105 db the startle effect upon RT seemed most evident. Then the elevation in RT took place at especially those ISIs for which he fastest RTs might have been expected (about 200 msec). For the remaining intensities no interaction between S1 and S2 upon RT was found even for the shortest ISIs, implying that the effects of S1 and S2 intensities upon RT were independent.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the psychological refractory period (PRP), a delay induced into the second of two reaction times (RT) when the interstimulus interval (ISI) is short. In Experiment1, time and event uncertainty were factorially varied by providing or not providing S with foreknowledge of the ISI and the order in which the two events would occur, respectively. ISIs of0, 50, 100, 200, and400 msec were used. Time and event uncertainty produced independent degradation of both RTs. Also, the second RT (RT 2 ) was delayed at50 msec ISI when both time and event certainty were present. Experiment 2 attempted to replicate this latter finding using ISIs of0, 25, 50, 75, and100 msec. Delays in RT 2 were found for the middle three values of ISI. These results were interpreted as supporting a modified single channel theory of the PRP.  相似文献

The averaged sensory evoked potential (EP) was recorded from the scalp (vertex to mastoid) in a psychological refractory period experiment in which 12 young adults participated. Reaction times (RTs) were measured to either both or only the second of pairs of stimuli, in different trial blocks, with inter-stimulus intervals (ISIs) of 100, 200, 300 and 400 msec occurring in random sequence. EPs were recorded at each ISI. No latency changes could be found in the prominent non-specific components (P1-N1-P2) of the EP to stimulus 2 even at ISIs where the RT was substantially delayed. Thus the notions that the RT2 delay is due to occupation of a single channel central processor by S1 and that non-specific EP components reflect the time course of information processing in underlying neural tissue, do not lend each other mutual support. Furthermore, as profound amplitude refractoriness in components P1-N1 and N1-P2 persisted at ISIs where RT was as fast or faster than simple RT, there appears to be a dissociation between “psychological refractoriness” and “physiological refractoriness”. The implications of these results are discussed.  相似文献

The present research used a startle amplitude reduction paradigm to investigate the ability of the rat’s auditory system to track rapidly changing acoustic transients. Specifically examined was the ability of brief gaps in otherwise continuous noise to reduce the amplitude of a subsequently elicited acoustic startle reflex. The duration of the gap, time between gap offsetand startle elicitation (the interstimulus interval or ISI), and rise-fall characteristics of the gap were systematically varied. Consistent with previous research, gaps reliably reduced startle amplitude. Gaps 2 msec long were reliably detected, and a 50-msec ISI resulted in the greatest amplitude reduction. Gaps presented at short ISIs produced amplitude reduction that followed a different time course than did gaps presented at longer ISIs. These results may reflect differences in the length oftime available for the processing of the stimulus and may involve two different processes.  相似文献

The single-channel prediction that delays in RT2 should be proportional to RT1 was examined by varying the number of alternatives (one, two, or three) in the primary response which was an extended arm swing at maximal speed. The second response was a thumb key release. Foreperiods were 2, 3, or 4 sec., and interstimulus intervals (ISIs) ranged from .10:50 sec. in .10-sec. steps. General support for the single-channel model was found in that RT2 paralleled changes in RT1. However, RT2 was greater than predicted when the second signal (S2) occurred during the execution of the primary response. In addition, while delays in RT2 as a function of ISI – RT1 showed corresponding differences between choice conditions, most values were greater than predicted. The deviations from the single-channel model appeared to be explained best in terms of a decrease in readiness to respond to the second signal as ISI lengthened.  相似文献

Two experiments investigated effects of numerical primes on production of simple multiplication facts (e.g. 4 × 8 = ?). In Experiment 1, a correct (32), related (24), unrelated (27), or neutral (##) prime appeared for 200 msec and was followed by a target problem at an ISI of 0, 750, or 1500 msec. Relative to neutral primes, correct primes produced constant RT and accuracy benefits across ISIs, and unrelated primes produced constant RT costs. Related primes produced costs compared to unrelated primes at the 0-msec ISI only. In Experiment 2, eliminating correct-answer primes from the stimulus set eliminated all the false-prime effects except the costs of related primes at the 0-msec ISI. We propose a dual-process account incorporating a familiarity-based name-the-prime strategy that produces benefits and costs insensitive to ISI and an automatic retrieval-priming process that is measurable only at short ISIs.  相似文献

The hypothesis that retarded individuals read-out information from iconic memory at a slower rate, relative to their CA matched peers, was tested. Three IQ groups (normal, borderline and retarded) were selected with 10 subjects in each group. A tachistoscope presented a stimulus array and a post-stimulus cue for 100 msec. each, separated by a variable interstimulus interval (ISI). This stimulus array consisted of 10 letters arranged on two horizontal rows. The post-stimulus cue was a circle which surrounded the position of the correct letter. Nine ISIs were used and ranged from −100 (cue before array) to 500 msec. A 3 × 9 repeated-measures analysis of variance revealed non-significant effects for IQ and the IQ × ISI interaction. A significant effect was found for ISIs (p < .01) which reflected reduced performance at the intermediate ISIs for all intelligence groups. The hypothesis of a read-out deficit in the retarded was not supported. The present findings were discussed in relation to previous research which supported a read-out deficit in the retarded.  相似文献

This experiment examined whether structural considerations, that is the functional closeness of limb control centres (Kinsbourne and Hicks 1978), have a role to play in common processing models of psychological refractoriness. A typical double stimulation paradigm was used (Kantowitz 1974). On experimental trials, subjects responded with the right hand (RT1) to an auditory signal (0.80 probability). After a varied interstimulus interval (ISI) of 100, 200, 300 or 700 msec, one of three lights corresponding to one of the other limbs provided the signal for the second response (RT2). Control trials for RT1 and RT2 involved both stimuli, but subjects were required to make only one response. Results indicated that experimental RT1 was lengthened considerably over control values. While typical double stimulation effects were found at short ISIs, that is RT2 was lengthened, RT2 at long ISIs was actually faster than double stimulation control values. Although the RT results were not in a pattern that would be predicted by functional distance (Kinsbourne and Hicks 1978), within subject correlations of RT1 and RT2 by limb condition suggest that structural considerations may have a role to play. While within subject correlations were positive at all levels of ISI, they decreased as the interval between the two signals increased. The implications of these results for common processing models are discussed.  相似文献

Spare the rod and spoil the icon   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Short-term visual storage was investigated with a successive field paradigm, so that correct performance depended upon combining visual information from two targets that were never on simultaneously. In the first two experiments, the stimuli consisted of two slides, each containing a 10' red dot on a gray surround, and separated by an interstimulus interval (ISI) from 20 to 400 msec. Subjects had to determine if the dots were vertically or horizontally aligned. In Experiment 1, the stimuli had either no contrast for the rods or no luminance contrast for the cones or high contrast. At short ISIs the cone contrast determined performance, whereas at long ISIs the rod contrast determined performance. In fact, when the dots were invisible to the rods, the task was impossible for long ISIs. In Experiment 2, performance was compared for zero log rod contrast and for small departures from zero. Even a small departure from zero log rod contrast resulted in above-chance performance. In Experiment 3, the stimuli were luminous rectangles and the task was to decide whether or not a 4' spatial gap was present between the two successively presented rectangles. Wavelength, luminance, and ISI were varied under both photopic and scotopic adapting conditions. The result was that the rods performed the task for ISIs of 150 msec or longer under scotopic conditions and under the photopic conditions that we were able to test. The results of the experiments taken together are consistent with the hypothesis that the cone icon is short, whereas the rod icon is robust and long lasting.  相似文献

Participants compared durations of paired white-noise bursts, with interstimulus interval (ISI) 100, 300, 900, or 2700 ms, presented in the order standard (St)-comparison (Co) or Co-St. St was 50 or 1000 ms, and 75% difference thresholds for "longer" and "shorter" judgments were estimated. In Experiment 1 feedback was given; in Experiment 2, with ISIs 900 and 2700 ms, there was no feedback. For St=1000 ms, the just noticeable difference (JND) in noise duration was generally smaller with the order St-Co than with Co-St; for St=50 ms, the JND relation was the opposite. JNDs increased with shorter ISIs. Time-order errors were positive for St=50 ms and negative for St=1000 ms, and approached zero for longer ISIs. Using Hellstr?m's sensation-weighting (SW) model, the ratio of the stimulus weights for the first and second burst was estimated; this ratio was generally >1 for St=50 ms and <1 for St=1000 ms. JNDs were smaller with feedback than without; the greatest reduction was found for St=1000 ms and an ISI of 2700 ms with the order Co-St, possibly because feedback increased participants' attention to the first stimulus. These results demonstrate the sensitivity of discrimination measures for long as well as brief durations to the factors of ISI, presentation order, and feedback. They also suggest different modes of stimulus processing for short and long durations.  相似文献

Conditions for the disappearance of long-range apparent movement were investigated. In an experiment on beta motion, critical interstimulus intervals (ISIs) of downward simultaneity thresholds for stimuli presented in continuous alternation were determined for exposure durations (EDs) varying from 3 to 160 msec. Each subject performed each test twice. Data were collected in three sessions, each for one of three angular separations (3°, 6°, and 12°) and the full set of EDs. The distribution of critical ISIs collapsed across subjects, EDs, and angular separations shows sharp maxima at regular distances within a range of 0–110 msec ISI. Significant or near-significant peaks were found at ISIs of 5, 9,22,27, 43, 55, and 107 msec. Although mean critical ISIs shifted with spatial separation, no essential shift of the main maxima occurred. Evidence of a periodic modulation with a period duration of 4.5 msec was obtained from the distributions of differences between critical ISIs of the first tests and their replications, which exhibit extremely low standard deviations (< 10 msec). These results agree well with previous analyses (Geissler, 1987, 1992) that led to a taxonomic model of quantal timing, briefly summarized in this paper. Further consequences are discussed and related to earlier developments (Geissler, 1991, 1992,1997).  相似文献

Slow EEG potentials (Fz, Cz, Pz) and heart rate were recorded during the foreperiod of a reaction task, which involved different levels of discrimination difficulty. A simple reaction task was compared with a selective reaction task where either an easy or a difficult discrimination was required. In general, the terminal amplitude of the CNV was not affected by task difficulty. However, a prolonged negative wave was found when the difficulty of the task was not known to the subject in advance but was indicated by S1. Moreover, the heart-rate deceleration around S2 was more pronounced the more difficult the discrimination required at S2.  相似文献

An extended movement was used to compare the memory-drum and single-channel definitions of psychological refractoriness. The basic movement In response to the first signal (S1) was a forward lunge and a concurrent arm swing through a target string. The response to the second signal (S2) was a reversal of the original movement The interstimulus Interval (ISI) ranged from .10 – .70 sec. in .10-sec. steps. The hypothesis that refractoriness of the reversal movement would decrease as ISI shortened was confirmed by the fact that error frequencies decreased significantly and substantially with decreasing IS I. The availability of some residual capacity to deal with S2 during the refractory period was also indicated by an examination of the relationship between RT2 and the interval between S2 and RT1. This departure from the classical single-channel model shows some agreement with the neuromotor-programming theory.  相似文献

Developmental dyslexics reportedly discriminate auditory frequency poorly. A recent study found no such deficit. Unlike its predecessors, however, it employed multiple exposures per trial to the standard stimulus. To investigate whether this affects frequency discrimination in dyslexics, a traditional two-interval same-different paradigm (2I_1A_X) and a variant with six A-stimuli per trial (2I_6A_X) were used here. Frequency varied around 500 Hz; interstimulus interval (ISI) ranged between 0 and 1,000 msec. Under 2I_1A_X, dyslexics always had larger just noticeable differences (JNDs) than did controls. Dyslexic and control JNDs were equal at shorter ISIs under 2I_6A_X, but dyslexics became worse than controls at longer ISIs. Signal detection analysis suggests that both sensory variance and trace variance are larger in dyslexics than in controls.  相似文献

Effects of age and interstimulus interval (ISI) were examined in eyeblink classical conditioning with a trace paradigm. Sixty young adults were trained in Experiment 1 with 6 interstimulus intervals (ISIs): 400, 900, 1,200, 1,500, 1,800, and 2,100 ms. The purpose was to find an ISI value for humans that would result in nonoptimal acquisition. ISIs of 1,200 ms and longer were nonoptimal. Adults aged 17-81 years were trained in Experiment 2 with a nonoptimal 1,800-ms ISI in the trace paradigm. Young and middle-aged subjects demonstrated equivalent levels of acquisition, and only older subjects conditioned more poorly. Aging appears to affect conditioning in the long-ISI trace paradigm as well as in the short-ISI delay paradigm.  相似文献

Two stimuli of three consonants each were successively presented through a tachistoscope. Results show that the shorter the totr 1 duration of S1, + ISI + S2, the more often the two stimuli are perceived as simultaneous. For a given total duration, the perception of simultaneity depends on the ratio of durations S1/S2, according to a nonmonotonic function. The optimum is reached for a ratio higher than one. When the S1/S2 ratio increases from 0.25 to 4, metacontrast decreases and paracontrast increases. These two phenomena are balanced for a value of the S1/S2 ratio which corresponds to the optimum of the perception of simultaneity.  相似文献

Using interstimulus intervals (ISIs) of 125, 250, and 500 msec in trace conditioning of the rabbit nictitating membrane response, the offset times and durations of conditioned responses (CRs) were collected along with onset and peak latencies. All measures were proportional to the ISI, but only onset and peak latencies conformed to the criterion for scalar timing. Regarding the CR's possible protective overlap of the unconditioned stimulus (US), CR duration increased with ISI, while the peak's alignment with the US declined. Implications for models of timing and CR adaptiveness are discussed.  相似文献

The discriminability of short tone bursts differing in frequency was measured in terms of the sensitivity index d' as a function of interstimulus interval (ISI). The two stimuli presented on each trial consisted of either 6 or 30 sinusoidal cycles. When the frequency of the first stimulus varied randomly and widely from trial to trial (Experiment 1), discriminability was maximal for an ISI of about 400 msec in the 6-cycles condition and for a significantly longer ISI (of about 1 sec) in the 30-cycles condition. However, when the first stimulus had only two possible frequencies and the second stimulus was fixed (Experiment 2), the optimal ISI appeared to be about 400 msec in both conditions. A final experiment confirmed that, for tone bursts of 30 cycles, the optimal ISI was dependent on the perceptual uncertainty of the first stimulus. These results support the idea that the duration required to perceive the pitch of a sound as accurately as possible may far exceed the duration of the stimulus itself. More importantly, they indicate that the required duration is not a constant.  相似文献
