Two experiments are reported in which Ss had to indicate whether pairs of simple geometric forms were “same” or “different.” In Experiment I the two forms were either both in the left visual hemifield or both in the right hemifield. Reaction times were unaffected by the locus of the stimuli. In Experiment 2, in addition to left and right pairs, there were pairs in which one of the stimuli was on the left and the other was on the right. Under these conditions, reaction times were faster for pairs totally on the left than for pairs totally on the right. The data support the notion that implicit scanning patterns are important in determining laterality differences. When such scanning is not involved and when simple nonverbal stimuli and responses are employed, laterality differences are eliminated.  相似文献

Asymmetries, where response times differ depending on the order of two stimuli, have been widely used to explore fundamental aspects of perceptual processing. Given how much is made of asymmetries in the study of perception there has been surprisingly little research into the cognitive mechanisms that may underlie why comparing two objects in isolation depends on the order of presentation. In visual search, for example, asymmetries are typically attributed to fundamental processing characteristics as opposed to the inherent relation between two stimuli. However, one possible explanation for asymmetries found in perceptual processing is that similarity is important in the task and it is similarity itself that is asymmetric. In the current paper, we use a stimulus set for which the transformational account of similarity predicts asymmetries based on differences in transformational complexity. Using the fine-grained measure of reaction time we show that directional differences in transformation distance successfully predict asymmetries in the speed of matching two stimuli in sequence. The results are discussed in relation to the role of transformations in perceptual identification more generally, and how transformations could be revealing about how objects are compared in other experimental contexts where objects are compared directionally (e.g., visual search).  相似文献

We examined the effects of egocentric and contextual references on a 3-D exocentric pointing task. Large systematic deviations were found for the slant (angle in the horizontal plane). For most observers, the deviations were smaller when the veridical pointing direction was parallel to a wall. For some observers the size of the deviations was also dependent on whether the veridical pointing direction was frontoparallel or not. For the tilt (angle in the vertical plane), the deviations were smaller and less systematic. Hence, although observers show comparable systematic deviations, the way in which the presence of structure in an environment is used for judging positions of objects is observer-dependent.  相似文献

Faster same than different judgments typically are obtained when two letters are compared. When two tones that might differ only on frequency are compared, however, same judgments typically are slower than different judgments. A uniprocessor, unidimensional model, based on Krueger's noisy-operator theory, was fitted satisfactorily to data from four published studies of tone comparison. The model predicts faster response time on different judgments because of heterogeneity of difference. Because the second tone in a pair typically may be either higher or lower in frequency than the first, there will be a greater variety of perceived difference counts on different pairs than on same pairs. As a result, a large difference count will be decisive and will lead to an immediate "different" response, because it can be produced only by a different pair, whereas a small difference count will not be so decisive because it can be produced by either a same or a different pair. Consequently, there generally will be more rechecking on same than different pairs, and thus longer RT on same pairs.  相似文献

According to the distractor-selection hypothesis (Mulligan, 2003), dividing attention during encoding reduces perceptual priming when responses to non-critical (i.e., distractor) stimuli are selected frequently and simultaneously with critical stimulus encoding. Because direct support for this hypothesis comes exclusively from studies using familiar word stimuli, the present study tested whether the predictions of the distractor-selection hypothesis extend to perceptual priming of unfamiliar visual objects using the possible/impossible object decision test. Consistent with the distractor-selection hypothesis, Experiments 1 and 2 found no reduction in priming when the non-critical stimuli were presented infrequently and non-synchronously with the critical target stimuli, even though explicit recognition memory was reduced. In Experiment 3, non-critical stimuli were presented frequently and simultaneously during encoding of critical stimuli; however, no decrement in priming was detected, even when encoding time was reduced. These results suggest that priming in the possible/impossible object decision test is relatively immune to reductions in central attention and that not all aspects of the distractor-selection hypothesis generalise to priming of unfamiliar visual objects. Implications for theoretical models of object decision priming are discussed.  相似文献

Contrast-based early visual processing has largely been considered to involve autonomous processes that do not need the support of cognitive resources. However, as spatial attention is known to modulate early visual perceptual processing, we explored whether cognitive load could similarly impact contrast-based perception. We used a dual-task paradigm to assess the impact of a concurrent working memory task on the performance of three different early visual tasks. The results from Experiment 1 suggest that cognitive load can modulate early visual processing. No effects of cognitive load were seen in Experiments 2 or 3. Together, the findings provide evidence that under some circumstances cognitive load effects can penetrate the early stages of visual processing and that higher cognitive function and early perceptual processing may not be as independent as was once thought.  相似文献

What is the degree to which knowledge influences visual perceptual processes? This question, which is central to the seeing-versus-thinking debate in cognitive science, is often discussed using examples claimed to be proof of one stance or another. It has, however, also been muddled by the usage of different and unclear definitions of perception. Here, for the well-defined process of perceptual organization, I argue that including speed (or efficiency) into the equation opens a new perspective on the limits of top-down influences of thinking on seeing. While the input of the perceptual organization process may be modifiable and its output enrichable, the process itself seems so fast (or efficient) that thinking hardly has time to intrude and is effective mostly after the fact.  相似文献

Research has revealed that haptic perception of parallelity deviates from physical reality. Large and systematic deviations have been found in haptic parallelity matching most likely due to the influence of the hand-centered egocentric reference frame. Providing information that increases the influence of allocentric processing has been shown to improve performance on haptic matching. In this study allocentric processing was stimulated by providing informative vision in haptic matching tasks that were performed using hand- and arm-centered reference frames.  相似文献

Selective visual attention and perceptual coherence   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Conscious perception of the visual world depends on neural activity at all levels of the visual system from the retina to regions of parietal and frontal cortex. Neurons in early visual areas have small spatial receptive fields (RFs) and code basic image features; neurons in later areas have large RFs and code abstract features such as behavioral relevance. This hierarchical organization presents challenges to perception: objects compete when they are presented in a single RF, and component object features are coded by anatomically distributed neuronal activity. Recent research has shown that selective attention coordinates the activity of neurons to resolve competition and link distributed object representations. We refer to this ensemble activity as a "coherence field", and propose that voluntary shifts of attention are initiated by a transient control signal that "nudges" the visual system from one coherent state to another.  相似文献

A major issue in the study of word perception concerns the nature (perceptual or nonperceptual) of sentence context effects. The authors compared effects of legal, word replacement, nonword replacement, and transposed contexts on target word performance using the Reicher-Wheeler task to suppress nonperceptual influences of contextual and lexical constraint. Experiment 1 showed superior target word performance for legal (e.g., "it began to flap/flop") over all other contexts and for transposed over word replacement and nonword replacement contexts. Experiment 2 replicated these findings with higher constraint contexts (e.g., "the cellar is dark/dank") and Experiment 3 showed that strong constraint contexts improved performance for congruent (e.g., "born to be wild") but not incongruent (e.g., mild) target words. These findings support the view that the very perception of words can be enhanced when words are presented in legal sentence contexts.  相似文献

Observers indicated whether a single probe letter presented to the left visual field/right hemisphere (LVF-RH) or to the right visual field/left hemisphere (RVF-LH) was contained in a memory set of 2, 3, 4, or 5 letters. For positive trials, the increase in reaction time caused by perceptually degrading the probe letter became progressively larger as memory set size became larger when the probe was presented to the LVF-RH but not when the probe was presented to the RVF-LH. These results were obtained regardless of whether the case of the probe letter varied randomly (Experiment 1) or only capital letters were used (Experiment 2). The results on LVF-RH trials suggest a relatively visuospatial memory comparison process, whereas the results on RVF-LH trials suggest a more abstract memory comparison process. In addition to these effects, the intercept of the memory set size function was lower on LVF-RH trials than on RVF-LH trials when the probe letter was perceptually degraded, consistent with the hypothesis that the right hemisphere is more efficient than the left at early visuospatial processes. Perhaps it is this efficiency at early visuospatial processes that produces the bias toward visuospatial memory comparison on LVF-RH trials.  相似文献

Latencies of same-different judgments to pairs of two-digit numerals were recorded for stimuli presented in familiar or unfamiliar (inverted) orientation. Familiar stimuli were responded to more quickly than unfamiliar. For both stimulus types, latencies were correlated with the syllable length of the verbal representation of the numerals, allowing the interpretation that the effect of stimulus orientation is on encoding processes. In two other experiments, it was found that familiarity had no effect on different judgments when the stimuli were relatively simple (e.g., a single digit), but did affect different judgments with more complex stimuli. These results were related to the hypothesis that the complexity of verbal material determines whether different judgments are instigated by visual or by verbal representations of the stimuli.  相似文献

Abstract

Children's perceptual organisation of hierarchical patterns was investigated in two experiments through similarity judgements. Previous studies with adults demonstrated that the perceptual relations between the global configuration and the local elements of such patterns depend critically on the number of elements embedded in the pattern: Patterns composed of a few, relatively large elements are perceived in terms of global form and figural parts, whereas patterns composed of many relatively small elements are perceived in terms of global form and texture. In Experiment 1 children at three levels of age (preschoolers, first and third graders) were presented with a standard figure and two comparison figures—a proportional and an un proportional enlargement of the standard. The number of elements in the standard figure was varied. When the number of elements was small, children at all age levels concerned judged the proportional enlargement which preserves the global and local forms as well as the relationship between them as more similar. When the number of elements in the standard figure increased, children switched their preference to the un proportional enlargement which preserves both the global form and the textural properties of the standard figure. When the global configuration and the local elements were pitted against each other (Experiment 2), and the number of elements was rather large, preschoolers and third graders judged the comparison figure having the same global configuration as the standard but composed of different elements as more similar to the standard than the comparison figure having the same elements arranged in a different configuration. Overall, these results are similar to the ones obtained with adults: As far as the perceptual organisation of hierarchical patterns changes as a function of the number of elements for the adult perceiver, it changes also for the young child. These results do not support the hypothesis that young children perceive complex visual stimuli as undifferentiated wholes, as some develop mental researchers have proposed. Furthermore, the finding that for children, as for adults, the elements do not function perceptually as parts when the number of elements is large, implies that fewclement patterns are better candidates for testing hypotheses about the relative priority of wholes and parts across development.  相似文献

In visual search, detection of a target in a repeated layout is faster than search within a novel arrangement, demonstrating that contextual invariances can implicitly guide attention to the target location (“contextual cueing”; Chun & Jiang, 1998). Here, we investigated how display segmentation processes influence contextual cueing. Seven experiments showed that grouping by colour and by size can considerably reduce contextual cueing. However, selectively attending to a relevant subgroup of items (that contains the target) preserved context-based learning effects. Finally, the reduction of contextual cueing by means of grouping affected both the latent learning and the recall of display layouts. In sum, all experiments show an influence of grouping on contextual cueing. This influence is larger for variations of spatial (as compared to surface) features and is consistent with the view that learning of contextual relations critically interferes with processes that segment a display into segregated groups of items.  相似文献

While effects of contextual change or constancy on memory are widely found when tested by free and cued recall, there is greater inconsistency in context effects on recognition. This study employed a paradigm maximizing target–context interactivity and specificity to reveal three levels of context effects on successful retrieval, as well as context effects on the generation of false alarms, thereby revealing separable contributions of target–context binding, additive familiarity, and configural constancy. The separability of these factors enables the use of memory context effects as tools for investigating associative memory.  相似文献
