Despite a dismal reputation, olfaction’s resolving power actually appears to be keen, especially when the contaminating influence of noise in the stimulus is discounted from psychophysical performance. In a previous investigation, subjects were able to resolve a change of 4% in the concentration of butyl alcohol. In the present experiment, these same subjects resolved a change of 9% in the concentration of amyl butyrate. The data imply that resolving power varies among odorants. The growth of odor intensity assessed by magnitude estimations of easily discriminable (i.e., grossly different) concentrations also varies among odorants. These observations prompt the question: Does an odorant for which resolution is relatively difficult lead to slower growth of perceived intensity with concentration than an odorant for which resolution is easy? In a scaling experiment, amyl butyrate indeed led to slower growth of intensity than butyl alcohol. Nevertheless, amyl alcohol, which permitted poorer resolution than butyl alcohol, led to approximately the same rate of growth as butyl alcohol. Accordingly, growth of odor intensity with concentration may correlate only weakly with resolving power.  相似文献

Twenty elderly subjects (70-90 years old) and 20 young control subjects (18-24 years old) underwent three kinds of olfactory testing: absolute thresholds to three odorants (d-limonene, iso-amyl butyrate, benzaldehyde), magnitude matching of these odorants to salt tastes, and odor identification of 30 common substances. For all three odorants elderly subjects' mean threshold significantly exceeded that of the young by about ninefold for d-limonene, about threefold for benzaldehyde, and about twofold for iso-amyl butyrate. These threshold differences predict approximate concentration differences necessary to arouse the same estimated odor strength above the threshold for the elderly and the young. Young subjects also scored better than the elderly in odor identification, even when subjects were given four alternatives from which to select the correct label. Unimpaired olfactory functioning is uncommon in the elderly; correlational tests show that as a group the young have better olfactory ability and show more interindividual uniformity.  相似文献

To determine the olfactory acuity of 27 subjects a sensory test was presented which was divided into 4 subtests, 2 for nasal and 2 for oral stimulation. Each subtest contained 28 (4 substances X 7 concentrations) olfactory detection tasks (items). The substances used were lemon and rum aroma as well as ethyl butyrate and amyl acetate, the solvents tap water and sugared tap water. Analysis showed that the test provided a clear differentiation between subjects of low, medium, and high olfactory acuity. The intercorrelations among the test substances and the split-half reliabilities of the subtests proved relatively high, whereas only moderate to low intercorrelations among the subtests were found. This was considered an effect of intraindividual variations of olfactory sensitivity. Finally, some conclusions for the construction of acuity tests for odor and aroma are presented.  相似文献

Approximate olfactory thresholds were determined in an exploratory study in which subjects were exposed to ozone (O3). The odorants were butyl alcohol (BA) and acetic acid (AA). Preliminary data suggest (1) temporary increases in thresholds due to O3 exposure, (2) diminution of O3 effects with repeated exposures, and (3) greater and more reliable effects for BA than for AA.  相似文献

The dynamic representation of pairs of intensity judgement responses to two-component odour mixtures, composed of various concentrations of bergamote and amyl acetate, is explored using multivariate time series analysis and the associated root locus diagrams derived from factoring a polynomial determinant of the matrix polynomial z-transformation of the system transfer function. The topology of the root loci is examined for both pseudocoupled and really coupled conditions, to see how the component odourants interact in determining the psychophysics of odour mixture perception. It is shown that most subjects show a loss in gain for both components, but that they are not dynamically homogeneous. Third-order loop gain equations are a sufficient representation in nearly all cases.  相似文献

This paper evaluates the use of a maximum-likelihood adaptive staircase psychophysical procedure (ML-PEST), originally developed in vision and audition, for measuring detection thresholds in gustation and olfaction. The basis for the psychophysical measurement of thresholds with the ML-PEST procedure is developed. Then, two experiments and four simulations are reported. In the first experiment, ML-PEST was compared with the Wetherill and Levitt up-down staircase method and with the Cain ascending method of limits in the measurement of butyl alcohol thresholds. The four Monte Carlo simulations compared the three psychophysical procedures. In the second experiment, the test-retest reliability of MLPEST for measuring NaCl and butyl alcohol thresholds was assessed. The results indicate that the ML-PEST method gives reliable and precise threshold measurements. Its ability to detect malingerers shows considerable promise. The feigning of sensory loss (malingering) poses a challenge for psychophysicists. To uncover malingerers by means of psychophysical testing, we combined measures of response-sequence randomness with the maximum-likelihood adaptive-staircase procedure used to measure sensory detection thresholds. The two-alternative, forced-choice maximum-likelihood adaptive-staircase procedure calculates an estimate of the threshold after each trial and also recommends the stimulus concentration for the next trial. Olfactory detection thresholds for butyl alcohol were measured in 7 normals, 6 anosmics, and 6 malingerers. Each participant was tested for 20 trials. A discriminant analysis, using threshold concentration and probability of being correct over the 20 trials, could correctly classify only 68% of the malingerers and anosmics. Correct classification of anosmics and malingerers rose to 100% when statistical measures of randomness in the response sequences were included in the discriminant analysis. We conclude that the maximum-likelihood adaptive-staircase procedure, combined with response-sequence analysis, is a powerful addition to the arsenal of techniques for detecting malingerers in the evaluation of sensory ability.  相似文献

Substantial variation exists in the importance of olfaction in influencing individuals' preferences, yet the sources of this variation remain elusive. The authors explored responsivity to 2 odorants as 1 potential source. Participants (N = 258) completed the Affective Impact of Odor Scale and were assessed for responsivity to the putative human pheromone androstenone and amyl acetate. Results showed a significant relationship between odorant responsivity and self-reports of the influence of odors. People able to smell androstenone more commonly reported odors as having a negative effect on interpersonal relationships than did people anosmic to androstenone, whereas responsivity to amyl acetate was associated with positive effects of odors on relationships. Responsivity to certain odorants may be an important factor affecting human social interactions.  相似文献

At 21 days of age three groups of male hooded rats of the Sprague-Dawley strain were exposed to either untreated water or lead acetate at concentrations of 25 or 50 ppm provided ad lib. in the drinking water for 40 days. When tested for spontaneous alternation, the subjects receiving both 50 ppm and 25 ppm lead acetate exhibited significantly reduced rates of alternation below those of untreated control subjects. Immediately subsequent to testing, lead was removed from the diet of the experimental groups and water substituted which was provided ad lib. for the duration of the experiment. This regimen of rehabilitation was continued for 70 days at which time all subjects were tested on the problems of the Hebb-Williams closed-field maze-learning task. No significant differences were found in the time taken to traverse the maze enclosure, the number of squares traversed, or in the total number of error zones entered over the 12 test problems, although significantly increased latencies to leave the start box were noted for subjects previously exposed to lead acetate. These data indicate that some deficits produced by postweaning lead acetate exposure may be reversible and not persist beyond a period of rehabilitation.  相似文献

Perception of target displacement is severely degraded if the displacement occurs during a saccadic eye movement, but the variation of this effect across the visual field is unknown. A small target was displaced from a starting point at the midline, or 10 deg to the right or left, while the eye made a saccade from the 10 deg right position to the 10 deg left position. Saccades were detected and the target displaced on line. Assessed with a signal detection measure, suppression was stronger in central vision than in more peripheral locations for all three subjects. Leftward and rightward displacements yielded equal thresholds. The results complement the findings of others to reveal a picture of perceptual events during saccades, with both deeper saccadic suppression and faster correction of spatial values (the correspondences between retinal position and perceived egocentric direction), favouring more accurate spatial processing in central vision than in the periphery.  相似文献

This study examined the spatial distribution of urine marking by sexually inexperienced male rats under six odor conditions: minimum odor (baseline), conspecific male urine, conspecific female urine, an animal's own urine, male gerbil urine, and amyl acetate. The gerbil urine and amyl acetate conditions were included to test the theory that marking, rather than being elicited by and directed as a display to appropriate conspecifics, occurred to the introduction of any novel or disruptive odor. The subject's own urine was used to test the theory that the animal marked to maintain an optimum level of its own odor in the environment. The results showed that marking was directed predominantly at objects in the environment over which the animal could readily pass. All odor conditions except "own odor" sharply increased marking over baseline levels. Marking decreased with repeated exposure to particular stimuli. The results strongly supported the theory that urine marking, at least in sexually inexperienced male rats, is produced by novel odor stimuli introduced into a familiar environment.  相似文献

Hooded rats were given conditioned inhibition training in which the taste of saccharin alone was always followed by induced illness, but the taste of saccharin plus the odor of amyl acetate was not. In a series of three subsequent tests—summation, enhancement of conditioning, and retardation—it was demonstrated that the odor had acquired active inhibitory properties. The results paralleled those obtained with more traditionally studied stimuli and techniques and hence were found to be readily predictable from a recent model of conditioning set forth by Rescorla and Wagner (1972).  相似文献

This paper reports perceptual identification thresholds for 150 pictures from the 1980 Snodgrass and Vanderwart picture set. These pictures were fragmented and presented on the Apple Macintosh microcomputer in a picture-fragment completion task in which identification thresholds were obtained at three phases of learning: Train (initial presentation), New (initial presentation after training on a different set), and Old (repeated presentation of the Train set). Pictures were divided into five sets of two subsets of 15 pictures each, which served alternately as the Train and New sets. A total of 100 subjects participated in the task, with 10 subjects assigned to each subset. Individual thresholds for each picture at each phase of learning are presented, along with the fragmented pictures identified by 35% of the subjects across the Train and New learning phases. This set of fragmented pictures is provided for use in experiments in which a single level of fragmented image is presented for identification after a priming phase. Correlations between the Snodgrass and Vanderwart norms and identification thresholds at the three phases of learning are also reported.  相似文献

There have been very few investigations of the spatial properties of taste stimuli localized to specific areas of the oral cavity. This is surprising, since the spatial localization of taste sensations may contribute to the overall taste percept, much as do quality, intensity, and the temporal characteristics of tastes. The difficulty in eliminating the confounding factor of a tactile sensation may partially account for the paucity of such studies, since a gustatory stimulus cannot be presented as a liquid without a tactile component. As a step toward understanding the localizability of gustatory sensations, we designed a yoked stimulator and an experimental procedure to control for tactile cues. Lateral discrimination was evaluated at the tip of the tongue with four taste stimuli (sodium saccharin, sodium chloride, citric acid, and quinine hydrochloride) by presenting a taste and a blank solution simultaneously at two locations on the tongue. We found that subjects could lateralize all four taste stimuli in the absence of any discriminative tactile cues. Subjects' ability to lateralize varied as a psychometric function of the stimulus concentration. Detection thresholds, measured in a forced-choice two-interval staircase procedure with the same yoked stimulator that was used in the lateralization task, were always lower than lateralization thresholds, and both lateralization and detection thresholds were correlated within subjects. Subjects were unable to lateralize taste cues on a nongustatory surface under the upper lip at the highest tested concentrations, at which performance was 100% on a gustatory surface (dorsal anterior tongue). These results show that (1) taste compounds can be lateralized in the absence of any discriminative mechanical cue (but only on the gustatory epithelium) and (2) although the localization of a compound does not logically require conscious detection of the taste (cf. blind sight), subjects always detected a taste when they were able to lateralize.  相似文献

Four odor substances (lemon aroma, rum aroma, ethyl butyrate, and amyl acetate) in different concentrations were presented nasally and orally (retronasally) in a four-alternative forced-choice procedure (detection tasks). In a further experimental condition, sucrose was added to the stimuli. Finally, the taste properties of the (nonsugared) odor stimuli were judged on seven semantic scales. In the detection of odor-containing stimuli, there were no significant differences between nasal and retronasal stimulation. In the taste conditions, however, there was a significant decline of “hits” when the stimuli contained sucrose in addition to the odor substances. Furthermore, in semantic scaling of the taste stimuli, a new variant of the taste-smell illusion was observed, namely, a tendency to attribute “suited” basic taste categories (e.g., “sweet”) to pure (nongustatory) odor stimuli.  相似文献

To determine whether saccadic suppression of image displacement uses information from luminance channels, we measured spatial displacement detection thresholds with equiluminant and nonequiluminant targets during saccades. We compared these saccadic thresholds with displacement thresholds measured during fixation by making ratios of saccadic thresholds to fixation thresholds. Ratios were lower in the equiluminant condition than in the nonequiluminant. This surprising result indicates that detection of equiluminant target displacements during saccades was better than detection of nonequiluminant targets, compared with the detection abilities during fixation. Thus, saccadic suppression of image displacement, which should increase displacement thresholds during saccades over fixation thresholds, was more effective with nonequiluminant targets. Because of target flicker, displacement thresholds were anisotropic in the nonequiluminant condition; thresholds were greater when target and eye moved in the same direction than when they moved in opposite directions, consistent with earlier results. These two effects (flicker-induced anisotropy and greater suppression in nonequiluminance) canceled when the eye moved opposite the displacement, yielding equal thresholds, and summed when eye and target moved in the same direction, yielding large threshold differences. We conclude that saccadic suppression of image displacement uses mechanisms sensitive to luminance contrast.  相似文献

The ability of black and albino rats to detect the first seven n-aliphatic acetates in the vapour phase has been investigated by use of an odour choice box. Both the median threshold and the slope of the probit regression line (which describes the relation between concentration and response) tend to decrease logarithmically in value as the series is ascended. The position of methyl acetate in these relations appears anomalous. When expressed as thermodynamic activities median thresholds for acetates of intermediate chain length are about equally stimulating, whilst short chain alcohols excite at decreasing activities with increasing chain length. The close similarity of these findings to those reported in the previous study on n-aliphatic alcohols supports the view that such relations may be of more general occurrence in olfaction in the rat.

The stimulus-response curve for each acetate studied shows one or more reversals in slope. It is suggested that certain of these are due to the presence of two or more olfactory receptor types one or more of which attain maximum response at lower concentrations of a given acetate than do the remainder. The asymptotes of the curves are reached in about 2-3 log units of concentration.  相似文献

Using either a gas chromatography or an infrared absorption technique, series of blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) determined by breath tests were obtained from human subjects immediately subsequent to their having only oral contact with beverages ranging in ethyl alcohol concentration from 4% to 95% +. Times for total dissipation of mouth alcohol residuals to a level of practical nonsignificance ranged from 10 to 19 min. Dissipation rates were an inverse and approximately exponential function of the ethyl alcohol concentration of the beverage and were greatly shortened by rinsing the mouth with warm (34°C) water prior to testing. The results are discussed in terms of their relevance to the methodology of a number of research studies employing BAC breath-testing equipment.  相似文献

The precedence effect is a phenomenon that may occur when a sound from one direction (the lead) is followed within a few milliseconds by the same or a similar sound from another direction (the lag, or the echo). Typically, the lag sound is not heard as a separate event, and changes in the lag sound’s direction cannot be discriminated. The hypothesis is proposed in this study that these two aspects of precedence (echo suppression and discrimination suppression) are at least partially independent phenomena. Two experiments were conducted in which pairs of noise bursts were presented to subjects from two loudspeakers in the horizontal plane to simulate a lead sound and a lag sound (the echo). Echo suppression threshold was measured as the minimum echo delay at which subjects reported hearing two sounds rather than one sound; discrimination suppression threshold was measured as the minimum echo delay at which subjects could reliably discriminate between two positions of the echo. In Experiment 1, it was found that echo suppression threshold was the same as discrimination suppression threshold when measured with a single burst pair (average 5.4 msec). However, when measured after presentation of a train of burst pairs (a condition that may produce “buildup of suppression”), discrimination suppression threshold increased to 10.4 msec, while echo suppression threshold increased to 26.4 msec. The greater buildup of echo suppression than of discrimination suppression indicates that the two phenomena are distinct under buildup conditions and may be the reflection of different underlying mechanisms. Experiment 2 investigated the effect of the directional properties of the lead and lag sounds on discrimination suppression and echo suppression. There was no consistent effect of the spatial separation between lead and lag sources on discrimination suppression or echo suppression, nor was there any consistent difference between the two types of thresholds (overall average threshold was 5.9 msec). The negative result in Experiment 2 may have been due to the measurements being obtained only for single-stimulus conditions and not for buildup conditions that may involve more central processing by the auditory system.  相似文献
