T. S. Eliot's The Family Reunion—"Schizophrenia" Reconsidered

T. S. Eliot's play, The Family Reunion ( 4 ), can be interpreted as a representation of a "schizophrenic" and his family. As such it illustrates some of the clinical insights of both individual psychiatry and family psychiatry. This paper will discuss the play from a clinical vantage point and conclude with a re-consideration of the concept of schizophrenia.     

Family Therapy or Religion: A Rereading of T. S. Eliot's The Cocktail Party

From the framework of analytic sociology the author discusses areas of overlap between family psychotherapy and religion. This is done through the analysis of T. S. Eliot's The Cocktail Party , a play written in 1949 which anticipated the innovation of family therapy. The emergence of the Family Therapy Movement is viewed in part as a response to changes in the structure of the modern family.

库恩理论与西方数学史研究

20世纪60年代,托马斯·库恩提出的科学革命理论对自然科学史等诸多领域产生了巨大影响,这种影响也延伸至数学史领域。由于西方数学史自18世纪以来已经建立了一个相对独立的编史体系和研究传统,库恩理论被引入数学编史领域是随着对数学中是否发生过革命库恩理论是否适用于数学史等一些根本问题的激烈争论而开启的。尽管这场始于20世纪70年代的、旷日持久的争论终未能达成一致,但伴随着争论的进行,库恩理论对该领域的影响逐渐扩大和深入。这些影响既体现在学界对于数学史研究的性质和目标等抽象层面的深入反思和重新定位上,也体现在研究主体、研究范畴和研究方法等具体层面的拓展和更新上;其对数学史研究的借鉴价值和实践影响,在近五十年来西方数学史研究趋向的转变以及该领域所取得的丰硕成果中得到了明确的展现。这些影响进一步揭示了关于数学、科学与历史问题的哲学考察对数学史研究的重要性。     

库恩的思想与对学人、学科、学问的认识

作为一个技术科技工作者和必须面对实际的工程师,我对于哲学的理论体系了解甚少,更不用说哲学研究了。好在哲学是有脑无脑的人都要想的事,特别是在20多年的科研工作之后,不得不想一下自己和同仁们到底是在做什么。因此,也就不得不涉及科学的哲学问题,而对许多科技工作者来说,库恩其人其思想,往往是他们了解科学哲学的第一和最后一站。 像许多人一样,我第一次接触库恩的思想,是通过《科学革命的结构》[1],这是我硕士答辩后读过的第一本书。库恩所揭示的学人的作用,范例的转移,再加上格式塔心理学的影响,使科学研究不再是理想中科学家探索真理的纯净过程,似乎成了一部大     

G.A.T.S. and universities: Implications for research

The likely impact of applying the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) to higher education are examined. GATS aims to “open up” services to competition: no preference can be shown to national or government providers. The consequences for teaching are likely to be that private companies, with degree-awarding powers, would be eligible for the same subsidies as public providers. Appealing to the inadequate recently introduced “benchmark” statements as proof of quality, they would provide a “bare bones” service at lower cost. Public subsidies would go: education being reduced to that minimum which could be packaged in terms of verifiable “learning outcomes”. The loss of “higher” aspirations, such education of critically-minded citizens of a democratic and civilised society would impoverish the university’s research culture which demands honesty and openness to public scrutiny. Most university research is substantially supported by public subsidy. Under GATS discipline, commercial providers of research services could be entitled to similar public subsidies. Publicly funded fundamental research would fade, leaving university research totally dependent for funds upon the good will of industry and commerce. Present problems, such as the suppression of unwelcome results and the use of questionable results to manipulate public opinion, would considerably increase. The public would lose a prime source of trustworthy knowledge, needed in political discourse, legal disputation, consumer protection and in many other contexts.     

The simple man: The consumption behavior of the principled life

In this study, we analyze the Simple Man, a label for those men who have above-average means in education, household income, or net worth but who consume inconspicuously and modestly below their means. We interviewed 27 men in the Northwest, Midwest, Southeast and Northeast regions of the United States and found that these men have highly individualistic identities and backgrounds yet appear to stray from products that separate them from others. These men also seem to have reached a level of contentment, not needing products or material possessions to achieve fulfillment, status, or a particular masculine identity. These men have practical and durable tastes that reflect low cultural capital (LCC) consumption but have the means and education in many instances to engage in high cultural capital (HCC) consumption. The men in this study adamantly proclaim that they do not define themselves by what they own nor do they appear to define themselves primarily by what they do, at least in terms of occupation. In short, these men appear complex in many ways yet live simple lives, or what might be termed complex simplicity. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

M.T.S.: An adaptable microcomputer-based testing system

An Apple II + computer-based human testing system is described. The system, which was developed using the Pascal language, provides library units of low-level procedures to rapidly access a clock, collect responses, control video output, control a touch-sensitive monitor, and display high-resolution graphics. Built-in hardware and software checks provide a high degree of system reliability. Use of easily altered text files for control of trials within a task and inclusion of and ordering of tasks within a session allows the system to be readily adapted.
