A case of unorthodox psychoanalysis with a 27-year-old woman, during the years 1994-1998 is presented. The patient, Silja, suffered from severe character neurosis with depression. She studied humanities at the University of Helsinki with poor results, because of severe inner demands of perfection. The therapy was unorthodox, because it was necessary to change the method a few times. After two years of psychoanalysis, a life-threatening crisis occurred in 1996, and I was obliged to take a more active role and even give direct advice concerning her studies. This was successful, and she could achieve her B.A., the lower university degree. The change of method was necessary to avoid suicide. In the end we could resume psychoanalysis and analyse what had happened. Suddenly in the summer of 1998 Silja's depression disappeared and her looks improved. Therapy ended in November 1998, when she was ready to try on her own. According to her both the holding and love and also the direct advice were the most important elements in her cure. After a three years' follow-up her condition had further improved, she was married, had a job and was expecting a baby.  相似文献

Abstract

Through a mixed methodology study of college and university faculty and presidents’ perceptions as they experience presidential change in Christian higher education, researchers addressed these research questions: Are there factors present that contribute to successful change during administrative transition in Christian higher education? If so, what are these factors? Faculty were surveyed using the Best Christian Workplaces (BCW) instrument. Following analysis of survey results, faculty participated in focus groups to qualitatively respond to the BCW survey. Finally, an interim president and newly elected president were interviewed to assess their perceptions of presidential transitions in Christian higher education. Researchers affirm conclusions from the literature and explain a key finding that contributes to the field of presidential change in Christian higher education.  相似文献

SUMMARY

Of the many factors thai accounted for Virginia Satir's ability to create change in intransigent couples and families, the sine qua nan may have been her therapeutic endurance (ability to “hang in there” with tough clients). Satir's formula for therapeutic endurance was her constant belief in the intrinsic worth of each individual—the wonderful human being myth—and its corollary thai all people arc capable of changing  相似文献

Abstract

This study investigated the reactions of Canadian unionized production workers following a plant closing announcement. Workers who had been transferred reported significantly greater job security, more trust in the company, greater commitment to the company, and higher job performance than workers who remained at the plant. They also reported less trust in their union than the remaining workers. Perceived supervisor support was positively related to company trust and company commitment and perceived union support was positively associated with union trust and union commitment. High stress appraisal (perceived injustice and job insecurity) was associated with increased strain, lower job performance, reduced trust in the company, and reduced company commitment, but had no significant effect on the union-related outcomes. The implications of these findings for companies and unions are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

In 2 studies, the authors investigated impression formation as influenced by category-based stereotypes associated with ethnicity and social class. The participants in Study 1 made judgments about 1 target woman, described as interested in running for office in the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) of her children's school. The hypothetical woman was presented to the respondents along with her photograph and information about her ethnic background (Anglo-Saxon, Latina, or Jewish) and occupation (middle class or working class). In Study 2, the authors changed the context and presented a younger target woman (also varied by ethnicity and social class) to the respondents as the new girlfriend of their older brother or cousin. In both studies, judgments were assessed by the participants' responses to 45 bipolar adjectives that, in each case, yielded 8 component factors. In both hypothetical contexts, social class was a powerful trigger for a variety of negative expectations: With respect to ethnicity, the Latina women were judged to be more unsuitable for the job of PTO vice president than were the Anglo-Saxon or Jewish women. The authors discussed potential psychological and social consequences of such category-based judgments.  相似文献

Abstract

Downsizing in its many guises, can have a profound impact on the employees who remain–the so-called survivors. The survivors of such change face many new demands and often find themselves in an environment comprising new organizational forms, different progression opportunities, and new rules for the employment relationship. Such changes may be geared to ensure the survival of the company, yet few organizations appear to provide the support and help required to facilitate personal survival for employees. At the interface between the organization and the individuals who remain lie many issues, including commitment, job security, career aspirations, and progression opportunities, which embody a different concept of career and its realization. This article explores career issues for survivors of the insecure organizational environment.  相似文献

Has suffering become an ugly word in the normalization debate? Are the disabled and their families forced into a Pollyanna 1 1 Pollyanna is the heroine in Eleanor Porter's book (1913), which has since been published in countless editions. Pollyanna received a pair of crutches when all she wanted was a doll. Because she didn't need to use her crutches, she was so happy that she played “being-happy” games for the rest of her life.
culture in order to be acknowledged and accepted in good company as the worthy disabled? This essay poses a controversial question: I would like to start a debate and ask whether normalization also has an unseen, ideological downside.  相似文献

Abstract

This is the case of a young woman suffering from a narcissistic personality disturbance with Oedipal aspects. The development of the analytic treatment is stressed through the analysis of her dreams. The analytic setting provided an appropriate mirroring Self-object. Thereby the patient has had the opportunity to express her own defective female grandiose Self, which was at the base of her disturbances.  相似文献

Abstract

Flaubert claimed mastery in matters of style in the French language as well as in the psychological sciences. Mastery in both areas is on clear display in the writing of Madame Bovary. Our heroine presents as a new kind of personality, namely as someone who depends greatly on sensory experience in order to maintain her emotional equilibrium. So, when under stress, she can only find some kind of soothing comfort in her perfumes, silks, and cashmeres. This dynamic pattern leaves her at a disadvantage when tasked with higher level life requirements – such as the payment of bills, the very thing that, in the end, causes her ruin. Dynamically, failures of memory and the resulting fragmentation of experience leave her with a precarious sense of self. For our heroine, there is little ability to link present experience to the past and therefore no possibility of metaphoric or symbolic thinking; in other words, she is condemned to repeat. Flaubert felt that Madame Bovary would only have original value as the sum of his psychological understandings. Further, he hoped his psychological work, often hidden under the form, would be deeply felt by the reader, as it was by him.  相似文献

Abstract

A treatment package including relaxation training, electromyographic biofeedback, cognitive restructuring, contingency management, and social skills training was used to manage an outpatient who had become an overuser of the health-care system in her search for effective relief of her multiple chronic pain. Self-report and social validation measures showed that the treatment package was quite effective in reducing chronic pain behaviours. The data also indicate that the modification of perceived pain alone had limited therapeutic effects on these behaviours. While most therapeutic gains were maintained at one-year follow-up, an increase in the patient's drug consumption to near pre-treatment level was observed. However, this increase was not associated with a greater use of the health-care system, thereby suggesting that the patient had become more self-reliant in her attempt to obtain relief of her pain.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Though scholarship has explored Karin Costelloe-Stephen’s contributions to the history of psychoanalysis, as well as her relations to the Bloomsbury Group, her philosophical work has been almost completely ignored. This paper will examine her debate with Bertrand Russell over his criticism of Bergson. Costelloe-Stephen had employed the terminology of early analytic philosophy in presenting a number of arguments in defence of Bergson’s views. Costelloe-Stephen would object, among other things, to Russell’s use of an experiment which, as she points out, was first conducted by Carl Stumpf. Russell appeals to Stumpf's experiment in his attempt to prove that sense data are terms in logical relations, a thesis presupposed by the project of logical analysis outlined in Our Knowledge of the External World. A reformulated version of Costelloe-Stephen's argument put forth by this paper shows that Russell's argument fails to provide adequate proof for his thesis. Further modifications of the argument can also address a reconstruction (based on contemporary reports) of Russell's reply to Costelloe-Stephen. In his reply, Russell would use, already in 1914, the term ‘analytic philosophy’ in contrasting his and Moore’s approach to a continental one, exemplified by Bergson and Costelloe-Stephen.  相似文献

SUMMARY

This article looks at the Tao of Virginia Satir which is exemplified by her apparent effortless manner of facilitating change with respect and congruence. She worked with the ‘rejects’ of the psychiatric community and was successfully able to make changes to their lives by contacting their inner ‘spirit’ while loving them. Her apparently simple and respectful Tao of communication and ability to contact the life force accounted in part for the powerful transformations she made with individuals and large systems.  相似文献

SUMMARY

The death of a client by suicide was very emotionally destabilizing to this therapist. She worked hard to distance herself personally from the pain at first and at the same time she found herself overfocused on the “psychological autopsy.” She had difficulty accepting new clients and wanted to withdraw from a meaningful appointment to a state advisory committee. Only when she was able to identify with the client's pain and realize how that pain touched her own history of loss was she able to grieve productively. She realized that gender was relevant in her identification with the victim and in sorting out each of their histories of loss.  相似文献

Abstract

Behind an intrusive mother’s view of her actual child lies a disproportionate, hidden desire to revive an ideal relationship with a perfect mother. The resulting image of an idealized child then becomes a strategic aspect of the mother’s own identity, representing an idealized figure from her own past. As the mother’s idealization is disturbed by the reality of the child, the mother experiences the situation between herself and the baby as “pathological,” that is, disruptive to her. She then attempts to repair the idealization by resisting any change in the status of her relationship to her child, even as the child grows older. Her rigidity in this regard necessarily excludes a paternal presence that could challenge or change the mother–infant idealized dyad. The mother’s orientation is also contradictory to, and acts as a resistance to, psychoanalytic therapeutic interventions, which aim at any “change.”  相似文献

ABSTRACT

While neuropsychoanalysis, as a hybrid discipline, is formally in its third decade of existence, there has been a striking paucity of papers illustrating the clinical applications and relevance of neuroscientific findings for the practicing psychoanalyst. The contributions in this issue illustrate the challenges and possibilities of such an endeavor. Neuroscientific research may strengthen one’s conviction in his/her theoretical orientation, create opportunities for offering ‘neuroscientific interpretations,’ stimulate new ways of thinking or, at its most ambitious, become the basis for a contemporary scientific metapsychology. Maintaining critical thinking, including an awareness of the role of interpretation of scientific facts, is necessary if this interdisciplinary effort is to be productive.  相似文献

Abstract

As anyone who has encountered her in person or through her writings knows, Mara Selvini Palazzoli is an impressive woman. 1 found her to be powerful, attentive and, most of all, intellectually restless impatient with psychotherapeutic approaches that work slowly or not at all, with the reluctance of family therapists to undertake thorough training, and with my inability to understand immediately some of her explanations.

Giuliana Prata, in contrast, is quiet, stable, ready to supply the correct English word or to expand on one of Palazzoli's comments. She seems ideally suited to her job of conducting the intensive telephone interview required before a family comes to the Milan Family Institute.

Although I had corresponded with Mara Selvini Palazzoli before our interview in Milan on March 30, 1982, I had not sent her any actual questions. Nevertheless, showing a certain prescience, she launched into an answer to my first question before I had a chance to voice it! That question was: Would you talk about your evolution from psychoanalyst to family therapist to paradoxical therapist SEB  相似文献

Abstract

Nigro and Neisser (1983) contrasted two ways of remembering personal experiences: the rememberer may ‘see’ the event from his or her perspective as in normal perception, or ‘see’ the self engaged in the event as an observer would. Several factors contribute to the determination of perspective, but Nigro and Neisser also reported that many subjects claimed they could change to another perspective at will. We sampled personal memories from several life periods and assessed ability to change the initially reported perspective. Changing was easier for recent or vividly recalled events, harder for older and less vividly recalled events. Memory perspectives may differ in other aspects than their imagery. A second study was conducted to determine whether affective experience is altered when perspectives are changed. The affect experienced decreased when shifting from a field to an observer perspective, but did not change with the converse shift. These studies provide further evidence that remembering is more than retrieval. The information that enters awareness is determined by the information sources in memory and the organisational scheme adopted for recollection.  相似文献

IntroductionThe low to moderate benefit of current care on optimal functioning in depressed patient encourages the development and evaluation of new interventions in this area.ObjectiveThis study aims at the clinical evaluation by single case of a serious game focused on personal resources in depressed population.MethodThe recommendations of the Single-Case Reporting Guideline In BEhavioural Interventions (SCRIBE) Statement were respected to design and report the results of this single-case research (Tate et al., 2016). A Withdrawal/Reversal ABA design has been applied to a young patient hospitalized for depression. Each phase contained 3 measurement opportunities spaced 7 to 10 days apart. In intervention phase B, a serious game was introduced in positive psychotherapy workshops without replacing the patient's usual care.ResultsIn the patient, serious game had a clinically significant benefit on depression, psychological well-being and affects. On the other hand, an increase in stress and anxiety levels, as well as a progressive decrease in the feeling of autonomy were also observed.ConclusionSerious game as a therapeutic mediator seems to have demonstrated its effectiveness for the patient. The reduction in depression coupled with the increase in stress and anxiety points out a favourable progression of the patient's problem. Elements specific to the patient's intra-individual problem were highlighted and could shed light on her clinical management.  相似文献
