Space constancy (the perception that the world remains stable despite eye movements) might be mediated by receptive fields with constant locations in the world rather than constant locations on the retina. In a strong form the hypothesis, receptive fields of single neurons would compensate for all eye movements, whereas in a weak form they would compensate only for the small movements of fixation that occur without retargeting. Early receptive field mapping confounded world-centered and retina-centered organizations by fixing the retina relative to the world. This paper links the strong and weak forms of constancy by relating previously isolated data, and illustrates the issues with a previously unpublished figure showing that striate receptive field have constant retinal locations. The first tests of space constancy in striate cortex contradicted the strong hypothesis; recent tests contradict the weak hypothesis, also. The results are consistent with modern theories of space constancy, differentiating between motor-oriented and perceptual functions of vision, and differentiating between constancy during pursuit and constancy across saccades. Two studies are reported in which electroencephalograms (EEGs) of habitual cigarette smokers and of nonsmokers were taken before and after they were required to smoke a cigarette. The EEGs were scored for incidence of EEG "driving" responses to photic stimulation, an index that appears to reflect the balance between central adrenergic and cholinergic nervous systems. The findings suggest that smokers tend to have a central autonomic balance less in favor of adrenergic functioning than do nonsmokers. Cigarette smoking may alleviate a possible central adrenergic insufficiency of smokers. These findings suggest a solution to "Nesbitt's paradox," which has reference to the fact that while nicotine is a central adrenergic stimulant, smokers describe the effect of smoking in sedational terms (i.e., as relaxing or calming).  相似文献

Summary In the awake, behaving cat, we have compared response of striate cortex neurons to informative and to noninformative stimuli. A cat pressed a pedal in response to a flashed pattern repeated every 10 s, receiving a reward if the press was within a 0.5–1.5-s post-stimulus window. There were three trial types: 50% of the trials had only the initial informative flash, 25% had an additional physically identical, but unrewarded, flash 500 ms after the first, and 25% had an unrewarded flash 3–5 s after the informative flash. Cats learned to respond only to the rewarded flashes. Neurons were divided into two categories: 27 neurons defined as primary showed an early burst of firing 30–70 ms after stimulus onset, and 17 did not. The distinction was arbitrary, since all cells were exposed to the same stimulus. For stimuli preceding a pedal press, stimulus-synchronized histograms of primary neurons had a smaller early burst and more firing before and after it. Response-synchronized histograms showed an abrupt decrease in firing shortly before the pedal press. The effects were stronger for primary cells in the stimulus-synchronized data and stronger for non-primary cells in the response-synchronized data.  相似文献

Laboratory rats were rewarded for face-washing, rearing, or scratching by being given the opportunity to press retractable levers for food reward. Yoked control animals received the same number of lever presentations and food rewards, but did not have to face-wash, rear, or scratch to obtain the levers. The experimental animals showed increases in number of bouts of reinforced target behavior above control levels, and the total amount of time spent face-washing increased when a 1.5-sec criterion for reinforced bout length was introduced. The activities in this experiment were made to serve a discriminative as well as an instrumental function, since the cue to tell the rat which lever to press for reward when the levers were presented was the activity that the rat had engaged in to obtain lever presentation. In two separate experiments high levels of discrimination between behaviors were obtained. Discrimination was worse following scratching than after other actions, and scratching also showed relatively poor instrumental conditioning. The relationship between Pavlovian and instrumental conditioning processes in this situation is discussed.  相似文献

The first investigates the discrimination of square from circle, a discrimination claimed by Lashley to be extremely difficult for the rat and which has since become a matter of theoretical interest. The CFF was determined with three sectored disks, each of which corresponded to one of the three rings in a Helmholtz disk. The fusion frequency is identical for all three rings of a Helmholtz disk but with the three sectored disks it was found that the rate of stimulus occlusion is a major factor in determining the CFF. It was tentatively concluded that the effect was not a consequence of different stimulus wave-forms. The phenomenon appears to have been reported late in the last century.  相似文献
