A stimulus-response compatibility (SRC) effect is obtained when performance is better with compatible mappings than with incompatible mappings. When mappings are mixed within a task, the SRC effect is often eliminated or reversed.The present study examines how 1,600 trials with different practice tasks can affect the response selection process in these mixed mapping environments. Participants were assigned to one of three practice groups: mixed mapping, pure compatible mapping, and pure incompatible mapping. Subsequently, all participants performed an experimental session in which compatible and incompatible trials were mixed.The SRC effect was eliminated in the experimental mixed mapping session, regardless of practice condition. The results suggest that practice does not change the need to suppress the direct response selection route in a mixed mapping task. However, reaction time distributions and sequential analyses were modulated by practice condition, which indicates that the new associations acquired during practice may activate new routes that interact with preexisting ones.  相似文献

In two-choice tasks, the compatible mapping of left stimulus to left response and right stimulus to right response typically yields better performance than does the incompatible mapping. Nonetheless, when compatible and incompatible mappings are mixed within a block of trials, the spatial compatibility effect is eliminated. Two experiments evaluated whether the elimination of compatibility effects by mixing compatible and incompatible mappings is a general or specific phenomenon. Left-right physical locations, arrow directions, and location words were mapped to keypress responses in Experiment 1 and vocal responses in Experiment 2. With keypresses, mixing compatible and incompatible mappings eliminated the compatibility effect for physical locations and arrow directions, but enhanced it for words. With vocal responses, mixing significantly reduced the compatibility effect only for words. Overall, the mixing effects suggest that elimination or reduction of compatibility effects occurs primarily when the stimulus-response sets have both conceptual and perceptual similarity. This elimination may be due to suppression of a direct response-selection route, but to account for the full pattern of mixing effects it is also necessary to consider changes in an indirect response-selection route and the temporal activation properties of different stimulus-response sets.  相似文献

Duncan (1979) examined all combinations of compatible and incompatible stimulus-response mappings for two spatial three-choice tasks in the psychological refractory period paradigm. Performance was better when the mappings for the tasks were consistent than when they were not, even when both mappings were incompatible. He attributed the benefit for the consistent incompatible mapping to an emergent choice between mappings when they are inconsistent that slows performance. Consistent incompatible mappings also may benefit from emergent perceptual features. The present study examined the role of emergent perceptual and mapping-choice features in two experiments that used pairs of two-choice tasks. Results similar to Duncan’s were obtained with visual stimuli mapped to keypresses at short (stimulus onset asynchrony) SOAs. However, the benefit of the consistent incompatible mapping condition over the inconsistent mapping conditions was eliminated at an SOA of 1,000 ms. Furthermore, this benefit was not evident when the stimuli were auditory for Task 1 and visual for Task 2. With two-choice tasks, the benefit for consistent mappings apparently is due primarily to an emergent perceptual feature.  相似文献

For tasks with an incompatible stimulus-response mapping, whether the compatible response must be inhibited paradigm for four-choice tasks with three different incompatible spatial mappings. For a mapping that did not follow a simple rule, reaction time was lengthened when the corresponding response on the preceding trial became the required response on the current trial, as compared with when it did not, showing a negative priming effect. However, for mappings that followed a simple rule, negative priming was not evident. The present study extends this research to a more complex mapping. On the basis of a two-process model adopted from the negative priming literature, we hypothesized that high mapping complexity should also diminish the negative priming effect for incompatible mappings, because the balance of cognitive resources is allocated to identification of the correct response. Two experiments are reported in which mappings of different complexity were used in six-choice spatial tasks. Analyses of reaction times showed that negative priming diminished with increased mapping complexity, apparently due to increased dominance of response identification processes, rather than inhibition of the corresponding response.  相似文献

Single-route models attribute stimulus-response compatibility effects to the difficulty of translation from stimulus to response. Dual-route models propose that compatibility effects reflect in part an additional direct, or automatic, activation route. Selected findings from three lines of research are reported that converge to provide evidence consistent with the view that the automatic activation route plays a role in compatibility effects. The data suggest that the activation produced via this route by relevant stimulus attributes influences response selection only when all mappings of stimuli to responses are known to be compatible.  相似文献

The paper investigates the role of working memory for the translation of spatial stimuli into spatial responses. Performance is typically superior with compatible mapping between stimulus and response locations than with incompatible mapping (spatial-mapping effect). According to popular dual-route models, the spatial-mapping effect may arise from differences in the effectiveness of S–R translation, and/or from the effects of automatic response activation. Working-memory load should not affect the automatic route, but delay S–R translation in the incompatible condition, increasing the mapping effect under load. These predictions were tested in two dual-task experiments. Participants performed a spatial-compatibility task with compatible or incompatible S–R mapping, while memorizing different amounts of spatial (Experiment 1) or verbal (Experiment 2) information. In both experiments, working-memory load decreased the mapping effect, but did not eliminate it. Results are at odds with the dual-route account. An alternative explanation based on the response-discrimination account (Ansorge and Wühr in J Exp Psychol Hum Percept Perform 30:365–377, 2004) is proposed.  相似文献

We investigated the role of response selection in sequence learning in the serial reaction time (SRT) task, by manipulating stimulus–response compatibility. Under conditions in which other types of learning, like perceptual, response-based, and response-effect learning, were unaffected, sequence learning was better with an incompatible than with a compatible stimulus–response mapping. Stimulus discriminability, on the other hand, had no influence on the amount of sequence learning. This indicates that the compatibility effects cannot be accounted for by a different level of task difficulty. Relating our results to the dimensional overlap model (Kornblum, Hasbroucq, & Osman, 1990), which assumes that incompatible stimulus–response mappings require more controlled response selection than do compatible stimulus–response mapping, we suggest that sequence learning in the SRT task is particularly effective when response selection occurs in a controlled way.  相似文献

If compatible and incompatible mappings of left-right stimuli to left-right keypresses are mixed such that participants must maintain both task sets, the typical stimulus-response compatibility (SRC) effect is eliminated. Four experiments examined whether the SRC effect is influenced similarly by inclusion of trials on which stimulus location is irrelevant. The SRC effect for the location-relevant trials was eliminated in Experiments 1 and 3 when those trials shared left-right codes with the location-irrelevant trials. The SRC effect was not eliminated in Experiments 2 and 4, in which the location-relevant stimuli varied along the left-right dimension but the location-irrelevant stimuli were presented in the centre of the screen or in top-bottom locations. The Simon effect for the location-irrelevant trials in Experiments 1 and 3 was positive when the location-relevant mapping was compatible and reversed when it was incompatible. The results are generally consistent with an alternative-routes model, according to which a direct response-selection route is suppressed when compatible trials are mixed with location-irrelevant trials. Repetition analyses suggest that this suppression does not vary on a trial-to-trial basis.  相似文献

The advantage for the compatible mapping of physical locations or arrows to keypresses is reduced when trials with compatible and incompatible mappings are mixed, whereas the advantage is increased for location words. We evaluated explanations of these mixing effects by varying the proportions of compatible and incompatible trials for groups performing with each stimulus mode. The mappings were compatible on 75%, 50%, and 25% of the trials, respectively, for compatibly biased, unbiased, and incompatibly biased conditions. For locations and arrows, compatible bias increased the SRC effect, and incompatible bias reduced the effect; for location words, the incompatible bias was stronger than the compatible one. Reaction time distributions showed that, with locations and arrows, initial activation toward either the compatible (unbiased condition) or the predominant (biased conditions) response was transient. With words, activation of the corresponding response increased across the distribution, regardless of bias condition. The influence of bias on the SRC effects was relatively independent of the mixing and sequential effects, and was different for words than for nonwords. These results are consistent with the view that visuospatial stimuli produce transient activation of the corresponding or predominant response, whereas location words produce phonological activation, required for word identification, that persists.  相似文献

Two experiments examined effects of mixed stimulus-response mappings and tasks for older and younger adults. In Experiment 1, participants performed two-choice spatial reaction tasks with blocks of pure and mixed compatible and incompatible mappings. In Experiment 2, a compatible or incompatible mapping was mixed with a Simon task for which the mapping of stimulus color to location was relevant and stimulus location was irrelevant. In both experiments, older adults showed larger mixing costs than younger adults and larger compatibility effects, with the differences particularly pronounced in Experiment 1 when location mappings were mixed. In mixed conditions, when stimulus location was relevant, older adults benefited more than younger adults from complete repetition of the task and stimulus from the preceding trial. When stimulus location was irrelevant, the benefit of complete repetition did not differ reliably between age groups. The results suggest that the age-related deficit associated with mixing mappings and tasks is primarily due to older adults having more difficulty separating task sets that activate conflicting response codes.  相似文献

The performance advantage for spatially compatible mappings of physical locations to keypress responses, relative to incompatible mappings, is eliminated when stimulus color, rather than location, is relevant on half of the trials. In Experiment 1, we compared the effects of mixing for different stimulus modes (physical locations, arrow directions, and location words) to determine whether this elimination of the stimulus-response compatibility (SRC) effect would generalize to other stimulus modes. The SRC effect was unaffected when the location information was conveyed by arrows and was amplified when the location information was conveyed by words. In Experiment 2, we used vocal left-right responses instead of keypresses, and the SRC effects for all three stimulus modes were enhanced by mixing. In both experiments, for all stimulus modes, mixing reduced or reversed correspondence effects for trials on which the location information was irrelevant when the mapping for those trials on which it was relevant was incompatible. These findings suggest that when trial types are mixed, direct activation of the corresponding response, regardless of mapping, does not occur for physical locations mapped to keypresses. However, such activation does occur when stimuli or responses are verbal, apparently because performance is mediated in part by activation of a verbal name code for the stimulus.  相似文献

The Simon effect refers to the observation that responses to a relevant stimulus dimension are faster and more accurate when the stimulus and response spatially correspond than when they do not, even though stimulus position is irrelevant. Recent findings have suggested that the Simon effect can be strongly modulated by prior practice with a spatially incompatible mapping and by correspondence sequence. Although practice is thought to influence conditional stimulus —response (S-R) processing, leaving response priming through the unconditional route unaffected, sequential effects are thought to represent trial-by-trial adaptations that selectively involve unconditional S —R processing. In the present study, we tested this assumption by assessing the effects of correspondence sequence both when the Simon task alone was performed and when it was preceded by a spatial compatibility task with either incompatible (Experiments 1-2) or compatible (Experiment 2) instructions. The observation that practice and correspondence sequence co-occur and exert additive effects strongly demonstrates that the two factors affect different processing routes.  相似文献

The present study examined the effect of stimulus valence on two levels of selection in the cognitive system, selection of a task-set and selection of a response. In the first experiment, participants performed a spatial compatibility task (pressing left and right keys according to the locations of stimuli) in which stimulus-response mappings were determined by stimulus valence. There was a standard spatial stimulus-response compatibility (SRC) effect for positive stimuli (flowers) and a reversed SRC effect for negative stimuli (spiders), but the same data could be interpreted as showing faster responses when positive and negative stimuli were assigned to compatible and incompatible mappings, respectively, than when the assignment was opposite. Experiment 2 disentangled these interpretations, showing that valence did not influence a spatial SRC effect (Simon effect) when task-set retrieval was unnecessary. Experiments 3 and 4 replaced keypress responses with joystick deflections that afforded approach/avoidance action coding. Stimulus valence modulated the Simon effect (but did not reverse it) when the valence was task-relevant (Experiment 3) as well as when it was task-irrelevant (Experiment 4). Therefore, stimulus valence influences task-set selection and response selection, but the influence on the latter is limited to conditions where responses afford approach/avoidance action coding.  相似文献

Costs of switching between tasks may disappear when subjects are able to learn associations between tasks, stimuli, and responses (cf. Rogers, R. D., & Monsell, S. (1995). Costs of a predictable switch between simple cognitive tasks. Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 124, 207-231). The first aim of this study was to examine this possibility by manipulating stimulus-set size. We expected that costs of switching between tasks would be strongly reduced under conditions of small stimulus-set sizes (n=4) as compared to large stimulus-set sizes (n=96) with increasing time on task. The second aim was to determine whether younger as well as older adults were able to create associations between task components. As age differences in task switching are often found to be larger when response mappings are incompatible we also investigated interactions with response compatibility. Results of our study indicated that practice effects on switch costs were much more pronounced for small than large stimulus-set sizes, consistent with the view that the strength of associations between task components facilitates task switching. Furthermore, we found that practice benefits on task switching for small stimulus-set sizes were sensitive to age and response compatibility. In contrast to younger adults, who showed a reduction of switch costs for both response mapping conditions, older adults showed a reduction of switch costs only when response mappings were compatible. That is, older adults showed less associative learning when the currently irrelevant task feature had to be suppressed, supporting the view that older adults have primarily problems in separating overlapping task-set representations.  相似文献

Responses to a relevant stimulus dimension are faster and more accurate when the stimulus and response spatially correspond compared to when they do not, even though stimulus position is irrelevant (Simon effect). It has been demonstrated that practicing with an incompatible spatial stimulus-response (S-R) mapping before performing a Simon task can eliminate this effect. In the present study we assessed whether a learned spatially incompatible S-R mapping can be transferred to a nonspatial conflict task, hence supporting the view that transfer effects are due to acquisition of a general "respond to the opposite stimulus value" rule. To this aim, we ran two experiments in which participants performed a spatial compatibility task with either a compatible or an incompatible mapping and then transferred, after a 5 min delay, to a color Stroop task. In Experiment 1, responses were executed by pressing one of two keys on the keyboard in both practice and transfer tasks. In Experiment 2, responses were manual in the practice task and vocal in the transfer task. The spatially incompatible practice significantly reduced the color Stroop effect only when responses were manual in both tasks. These results suggest that during practice participants develop a response-selection strategy of emitting the alternative spatial response.  相似文献

Action planning, but not action execution, in speeded tasks is typically faster when responses and their effects are compatible than when they are incompatible. We tested whether response-effect compatibility (REC) affects the execution of music-like sequential actions that require temporal regularity rather than rapidity. Musicians responded to metronomic visual stimuli by producing sequences of three taps at a specific tempo on three vertically aligned keys. Each tap triggered a tone. Key-to-tone mapping was either compatible or incompatible in terms of spatial height and pitch height. The results indicated that tap timing was more accurate with compatible than with incompatible mappings, both for taps produced before (Tap 1) and after (Taps 2 and 3) the onset of auditory feedback. Thus, the observed influence of REC on action execution was not due exclusively to actual auditory feedback. The anticipation of distal action effects may be involved in planning the dynamics of temporally precise movements.  相似文献

Input–output (I–O) modality compatibility refers to the similarity of stimulus modality and modality of response-related sensory consequences. A previous study found higher switch costs in task switching in I–O modality incompatible tasks (auditory-manual and visual-vocal) than in I–O modality compatible tasks (auditory-vocal and visual-manual). However, these tasks had spatially compatible S–R mappings, which implied dimensional overlap (DO). DO may have led to automatic activation of the corresponding compatible responses in the incorrect response modality, thus increasing interference effects. The present study was aimed to examine the influence of DO on I–O modality compatibility effects. In two experiments, we found that I–O modality compatibility affects task switching even in tasks without DO, which even tended to result in further increased modality influences. This finding suggests that I–O modality mappings affect response selection by affecting between-task cross-talk not on the level of specific response codes but on the level of modality-specific processing pathways.  相似文献

Simon, Acosta, and Mewaldt (1975) reported an experiment in which a 200-Hz warning-tone, presented in the left or right ear, was followed by an imperative stimulus of 500 Hz in either ear, to which a left- or right-key press was to be made. Simon et al. found a correspondence effect for warning location and response location (i.e., faster reactions when warning and response locations corresponded than when they did not) when the stimulus-response mapping was incompatible but not when it was compatible. These findings stand in contrast to typical results of (1) a correspondence effect for irrelevant location information when the mapping is compatible and (2) a reversed correspondence effect (i.e., faster responses when stimulus and response location do not correspond) when the mapping is incompatible. We conducted a direct replication of Simon et al.’s experiment and another experiment that differed only in the imperative stimulus being visual, in order to determine whether there are unique aspects of their method that yield atypical results. Our results failed to replicate those reported by Simon et al. but instead showed the patterns of correspondence effects typically found with other procedures, suggesting that the warning-signal method produces irrelevant-location effects consistent with those produced by other methods.  相似文献

In 4 experiments, the authors investigated the reversal of spatial congruency effects when participants concurrently practiced incompatible mapping rules (J. G. Marble & R. W. Proctor, 2000). The authors observed an effect of an explicit spatially incompatible mapping rule on the way numerical information was associated with spatial responses. The authors also observed an effect of an incompatible numerical mapping rule (if smaller than 5, press right; if larger than 5, press left) on the Simon effect. This effect was observed only when both tasks used the same effectors. The results point to a shared spatial representation for explicit spatial information (locations) and implicit spatial information (numbers).  相似文献
