In conditional discriminations, when samples differ only in duration, pigeons typically show a choose-short effect (i.e., higher matching accuracy on short-duration-sample than on long-durationsample trials with increasing delay between sample and comparison stimuli). That this effect depends on the similarity of retention interval (RI) and intertrial interval (ITI) houselight illumination conditions has been taken as evidence that pigeons judge duration relative to a temporal background. In the present experiment, pigeons trained with duration samples and with the ITI either illuminated or not showed a choose-short bias only when the RI illumination on test trials was the same as the ITI illumination had been in training. The results support the hypothesis that the choose-short effect results from the pigeons’ confusion between the ITI and the RI.  相似文献

Pigeons were trained in a matching task with either color (group color-first) or line (group line-first) samples. After asymmetrical training in which each group was initially trained with the same sample on all trials, marked retention asymmetries were obtained. In both groups, accuracy dropped precipitously on trials involving the initially trained sample and remained high on trials involving the sample introduced second in training, suggesting that asymmetrical training encouraged a single-code/default strategy in which only the sample trained initially was coded. Pigeons next received concurrent training with the alternate set of samples mapped to the same set of comparisons as were the first set of samples (many-to-one, MTO, procedure). Retention testing revealed no marked retention asymmetries in group line-first whereas marked retention asymmetries occurred with both sets of samples in group color-first. Hence, only birds in group color-first continued to use a single-code/default strategy after MTO training.  相似文献

Pigeons were trained in a matching task in which samples involved presentation of a white line on a green background (feature-present) or on an otherwise dark key (feature-absent). After asymmetrical training in which one group was initially trained with the feature-present sample and another was initially trained with the feature-absent sample, marked retention asymmetries were obtained. In both groups, accuracy dropped precipitously on trials involving the initially trained sample and remained high on trials involving the sample introduced second in training. It was concluded that asymmetrical training encouraged a single-code/default strategy in which only the sample trained initially was coded. Consistent with this conclusion, changing attributes of either sample reduced accuracy to a greater extent in pigeons initially trained with that sample than in pigeons for which that sample was introduced second in training.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted with pigeons to determine whether internal representations of food and no-food events can act as mediators in the formation of new associations. Specifically we asked if the representation of an anticipated event can replace the event itself in an established conditional discrimination. In Phase 1 of both experiments pigeons were differentially autoshaped to peck hue stimuli, only one of which was followed by access to food. In Phase 2 they were trained on a symbolic 0-delay matching-to-sample (DMTS) task with food and no-food samples and line-orientation comparisons. In Phase 3 the birds were tested on a symbolic DMTS task in which the hue stimuli from Phase 1 were substituted for the Phase 2 food-event samples. For the Pos group, the hue followed by food in Phase 1 was substituted for the food sample and the hue associated with no-food was substituted for the no-food sample so that the resulting sample/comparison pairings were consistent with the food-event mediator. For the Neg group the pairings were reversed so that the sample/comparison pairings were inconsistent with the food-event mediators. In Experiment 1, when the no-food event was the absence of an event, acquisition of the transfer task was significantly more rapid in the Pos than in the Neg condition. In Experiment 2, when the no-food event was the presentation of an empty food hopper, the Pos group transferred at a significantly higher level than the Neg group. The two experiments provide evidence that in pigeons, representations involving event anticipations can be substituted for, and are thus similar to, the events themselves.  相似文献

Pigeons were initially trained with either temporal samples (2- and 8-s keylights) or hedonic samples (food and no food) mapped to line-orientation (horizontal and vertical) comparisons. Delay testing revealed marked retention asymmetries in both groups (i.e., a choose-short effect with temporal samples and a choose-no-food effect with hedonic samples). Next, while both groups continued training on the original task, a second set of samples was added, hedonic for birds originally trained with temporal samples and temporal for birds originally training with hedonic samples. For all birds, food and short samples were associated with one comparison, and no-food and long samples were associated with the alternative comparison (many-to-one, MTO, mapping). This time, delay testing revealed symmetrical retention functions in both groups with both sets of samples, and mediated-transfer testing revealed positive transfer. It was concluded that (1) a common code was used to represent samples associated with the same comparison in the MTO mapping and (2) the content of the codes was unrelated to the identity of the samples.  相似文献

Rats were submitted to step-down inhibitory avoidance training and to habituation of a rearing response to a tone with a 2-h interval between the two tasks, and were tested for retention of both tasks on the next day. When animals were trained first in inhibitory avoidance and then in habituation, retention of the avoidance behavior was impaired. When the animals were trained first in the habituation task and then in the avoidance task, retention of the two tasks was normal. The same results were obtained regardless of the order in which the two tasks were presented on the day of testing. This asymmetrical influence of habituation training on inhibitory avoidance retention could be due either to cognitive or, more likely, to task-specific neurochemical interactions.  相似文献

Successful reading instruction entails not only acquiring new words but also remembering them after training has finished and accessing their word-specific representations when they are encountered in new text. We report two studies demonstrating that acquisition, retention, and transfer of unfamiliar words were affected differentially by isolated word and context training. Materials were individualized to include only those words that average readers in second grade were unable to name in context. Different words were trained in each condition; context training presented words in stories, and isolated word training presented words on flashcards. Together, the studies show that context training promotes word acquisition beyond that experienced from reading words in isolation. Contrary to the prevailing opinion, memory performance for words trained in context and in isolation did not differ; children demonstrated excellent retention over an 8-day interval in both conditions. Finally, transfer was maximized when the congruency between training and testing was high. Therefore, when reading trained words in novel circumstances, the best method of training was mediated by the transfer task employed at test.  相似文献

The same reliable color cues were equally available to different groups of pigeons trained on a delayed conditional simultaneous visual discrimination task. However, for different groups, prechoice and postchoice food or no-food events were programmed in such a way that, theoretically, memories of these events, expectancies of them, both, or neither could also serve as reliable cues for choice. In the case where both prechoice and postchoice food/no-food events were correlated with correct choices, two ways of correlating the prechoice and postchoice events with one another were examined. For synergism subjects, when the prechoice event was food, the postchoice event was also food, and when the prechoice event was no food, the postchoice event was no food; therefore, on a given trial, the operative memory and expectancy were of the same event. For antagonism subjects, when the prechoice event was food, the postchoice event was no food, and vice versa; thus, for these subjects, the memory and expectancy active on a given trial were of opposite events. Expectancies were found to exert significantly greater control over choice behavior than memories. Moreover, antagonism subjects chose significantly less accurately than synergism subjects or than an expectancy only group. A follow-up experiment confirmed this effect. The relevance of these results to various models of memory and expectancy was addressed.  相似文献

A rapidly learned odor discrimination task based on spontaneous foraging behavior of the rat was used to evaluate the role of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors (NMDARs) in ongoing memory consolidation. Rats were trained in a single session to discriminate among three odors, one of which was associated with palatable food reward. Previous experiments showed that the NMDAR antagonist DL-APV induced amnesia for this task when injected immediately after training. In the present study, memory was reactivated 24 h after training by exposure to the rewarded odor within the experimental context after which rats received an intracerebroventricular injection of APV. Combined reactivation-drug treatment induced profound amnesia when tested 48 h later. Animals receiving drug alone, in absence of reactivation, showed perfect retention. It is concluded that NMDARs support a consolidation process taking place after memory reactivation.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that pigeons will only code the more salient sample when samples differ markedly in salience, pigeons were trained with samples consisting of a 2-s presentation of food (highly salient sample) and an 8-s presentation of keylight (less salient sample). During retention testing, pigeons tended to respond at longer delays as if an 8-s keylight sample had been presented. This finding is consistent with use of a single-code/default strategy in which only the 2-s food sample was coded and the comparison associated with an 8-s keylight sample was selected by default in the absence of memory for the salient 2-s food sample. Hence, a marked difference in sample salience appears to encourage use of a single-code/default strategy.  相似文献

Six pigeons were trained initially on a delayed successive matching-to-sample task using red and green fields as sample and test stimuli. Following acquisition, each sample was followed either by a vertical line (“remember” cue), which indicated that sample memory would be tested, or by a horizontal line (“forget” cue), which indicated that sample memory would not be tested. During the experiments, sample memory on forget trials was tested occasionally. A series of five experiments revealed: (a) better retention on remember trials than on forget trials, (b) increased effectiveness of a forget cue when it followed closely sample offset, (c) more rapid forgetting over a retention interval ranging from 3 to 6 sec on forget trials than on remember trials, (d) a “cancellation” effect in which a remember cue which followed immediately the offset of a forget cue attenuated markedly the effectiveness of the forget cue, and (e) an “insulation” effect in which the effectiveness of a forget cue was reduced considerably when presented after a remember cue. It was concluded that pigeons actively process or rehearse the sample memory during the retention interval.  相似文献

Rats were trained on a discrete-trial version of a concurrent variable-interval (VI) variable-ratio (VR) schedule in which the relative reinforcement rates were varied across conditions. Subjects with the shorter intertrial interval (ITI) had a significant bias toward the VR alternative, as predicted by optimality theory, and were also more likely to choose the VI alternative with longer times since responses to the VI alternative, as predicted by momentary-maximizing theory. Subjects with the longer ITI failed to show either of these effects. Approximation to the matching law was greater with the longer ITI. Thus, matching is not derivative of the processes postulated by optimality or momentary-maximizing theory but instead is in competition with those processes.  相似文献

Previous research suggests that when a fixed interval is interrupted (known as the gap procedure), pigeons tend to reset memory and start timing from 0 after the gap. However, because the ambient conditions of the gap typically have been the same as during the intertrial interval (ITI), ambiguity may have resulted. In the present experiment, the authors found that when ambient conditions during the gap were similar to the ITI, pigeons tended to reset memory, but when ambient conditions during the gap were different from the ITI, pigeons tended to stop timing, retain the duration of the stimulus in memory, and add to that time when the stimulus reappeared. Thus, when the gap was unambiguous, pigeons timed accurately.  相似文献

In Experiment 1, rats were trained in a symbolic delayed matching-to-sample task to discriminate sample stimuli that consisted of sequences of magazine light flashes. The intertrial interval was illuminated by the houselight for Group Light, and it was dark for Group Dark. Retention functions exhibited a choose-many response bias when the delay interval was illuminated by the houselight in both groups, and no consistent response bias when the delay interval was dark. In Experiment 2, rats were trained to discriminate sample stimuli that consisted of sequences of tone bursts. During delay testing, a different tone (i.e., different frequency and location than the sample tone) was present or absent during the delay interval. The retention functions exhibited a significant choose-many bias when tone was present during the delay and a choose-few bias when tone was absent. Asymmetrical retention functions for tone burst and light flash sequences are due to the similarity between the stimulus conditions of the delay interval and the modality of the sequential event being discriminated. These results are consistent with an instructional ambiguity explanation of response biases in memory for number.  相似文献

Rats were trained in a one-trial appetitive task using water motivation. Brain catecholamine and metabolite levels were assessed in samples collected 10 min after training. There was no evidence that brain NE levels were modified by training, although catecholamine levels increased when the animals were placed in a novel environment. These results differ from those obtained after avoidance training where the extent of a post-training decrease in brain norepinephrine predicts later retention performance.  相似文献

Rats were trained and tested on a hierarchical radial maze, which consisted of eight primary alleys radiating from a central platform and three secondary alleys which branched off the end of each primary alley. In four experiments, rats in groups 1, 2, and 3 were tested on maze configurations consisting of one, two, or three secondary alleys, respectively, at the end of each primary alley. In Experiment 1, each group was trained to collect food pellets in the secondary alleys. By the end of training, rats in each group collected all pellets efficiently, with little repetition of entrances into either primary or secondary alleys. In Experiments 2 and 3, tests were carried out which required retention of entrances into secondary alleys, as well as primary alleys. Two trials were run in succession, with selected secondary alleys blocked on trial 1 but open and baited with food on trial 2. Animals in groups 2 and 3 showed very accurate retention of blocked secondary alleys, regardless of variation in pattern and number of alleys blocked. A fourth experiment controlled for the possible use of food cues in Experiments 2 and 3 by rebaiting all secondary alleys between trials 1 and 2. Subjects continued to choose previously blocked alleys on trial 2, thus demonstrating that choice of blocked alleys was based on memory and not on a tendency to approach visual or olfactory food cues. Several findings of these experiments suggest that memories for primary and secondary alley choices are encoded and stored within separate memory systems. Possible coding mechanisms for these systems are discussed with reference to a process of cognitive mapping.  相似文献

Group I metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGlu1 and 5) have been implicated in synaptic plasticity and learning and memory. However, much of our understanding of how these receptors in different brain regions contribute to distinct memory stages in different learning tasks remains incomplete. The present study investigated the effects of the mGlu5 receptor antagonist, 2-methyl-6-(phenylethynyl)-pyridine (MPEP), and mGlu1 receptor antagonist, (S)-(+)-alpha-amino-4-carboxy-2-methylbenzene-acetic acid (LY 367385) in the dorsal hippocampus on the consolidation and extinction of memory for inhibitory avoidance learning. Male, Sprague-Dawley rats were trained in a single-trial step-down inhibitory avoidance task. MPEP, LY 367385 or saline were infused bilaterally into the CA1 region immediately after training or immediately after the first retention test which was given 24h after training. Rats receiving MPEP (1.5 or 5.0 microg/side) or LY 367385 (0.7 or 2.0 microg/side) infusion exhibited a dose-dependent decrease in retention when tested 24h later. MPEP was ineffective while LY 367385 significantly attenuated extinction when injected after the first retention test using an extinction procedure. These findings indicate a selective participation of hippocampal group I mGlu receptors in memory processing in this task.  相似文献

Two experiments evaluated the role of differential conditioning of the context in mediating the effect of intertrial interval (ITI) in autoshaping. In Experiment 1 pigeons were given acquisition with two keylights, each presented in a particular context. A given keylight/context combination had associated with it either a short (10-sec) or a long (2-min) ITI. Acquisition was more rapid with the long ITI. Tests with those keylights in a common third context indicated that the longer ITI had resulted in greater conditioning. On the other hand, pigeons trained on keylights with mixed ITIs in a third context evoked more responding when they were tested in the short ITI context compared with the long ITI context. That suggests that a context with a history of a short ITI enhances performance. In Experiment 2, two keylights were initially conditioned with mixed ITIs and then extinguished in different contexts under different ITI lengths. Extinction was more rapid for the keylight presented with a short ITI. That difference persisted when the keylights were tested with mixed ITIs in a common third context, suggesting a difference in associative strength of the keylights. The results are interpreted in terms of differential context conditioning resulting in differences in learning about the keylight.  相似文献
