A modification of the Gram-Schmidt process yields an easily constructed orthogonal transformation matrix which may be used to rotate a centroid, principal axis, or maximum likelihood factor matrix in a manner such that one of the new axes has predetermined direction. The procedure is illustrated by rotating a centroid factor matrix into an abbreviated bifactor matrix, the general factor being defined as the centroid of a specified subgroup of reasoning tests.  相似文献

Results of 10 trials on 6 tests for 50 subjects were analyzed, first, by applying the centroid method to actual improvement or practice scores and, second, by applying a formula developed by Woodrow for determining factor loadings for practice scores from the differences between factor loadings of initial and final scores. Contrary to expectation, the two methods yielded discrepant results, for the explanation of which a hypothesis is advanced. The operation of a general factor was not demonstrated. Tentative interpretations of the factors extracted by the centroid method are offered.  相似文献

An analysis by Thurstone's centroid method of the intercorrelations of fifty-two tests was carried to ten factors. Included were tests of social intelligence, Philip's attention tests, and Seashore's tests of musical ability. After rotation of axes, the most important factors appeared to pertain to operations conventionally alluded to by the following terms: verbal facility; spatial ability; numerical ability; attention; musical ability; and memory (or memory span). The social intelligence tests proved to be mainly tests of the verbal factor. A factorial sex difference was indicated by the superiority of men in tests of spatial ability.  相似文献

In order to investigate certain hypotheses concerning the nature of number ability, and, secondarily, the nature of perceptual speed, a battery of thirty-four tests was given to 223 Chicago high school seniors and the data were factored by the centroid method. Seven primary factors were identifiable upon rotation. Several deductions are made relative to the interpretation of the factors and relative to the consistency of the data with the hypotheses which were to be tested. I wish to express my great appreciation of the aid of Professor L. L. Thurstone whose generosity made this study possible. Grateful acknowledgment is made of the aid of Mr. Ledyard Tucker in the use of the I.B.M. machines for obtaining the intercorrelations and the centroid factor loadings, and to both him and Mr. Harold Bechtoldt for aid in the testing of subjects.  相似文献

A rigorous and an approximate solution are found for the problem: Given a primary trait matrix forn tests andr 1 traits, and a matrix for the samen tests andr 2 reference axes, to discover the transformation which will transform the second matrix into the first, or primary trait matrix. Formulas for determining the limits of the effect of using the approximate solution are presented. The method is applied to a set of twenty hypothetical tests, defined by their loadings on four orthogonal primary traits. After factoring the inter-correlations of these variables by Thurstone's centroid method, approximating the diagonals, the original hypothetical matrix is reproduced with a root mean square discrepancy of .014 by assuming as known the primary trait loadings of only the first eight tests. The method is applied to the results of factoring two batteries of 14 tests, having 8 tests in common, to give the factor loadings of the two batteries on the same reference axes. The method provides a means of comparing directly and quantitatively the results of two different factor studies, provided they have tests in common, and of testing the stability of simple structure under changes in the battery. The relations of the method here developed to certain problems in multiple correlation are shown.  相似文献

Music ability
Two batteries of music tests were factored by the centroid method. From each battery three oblique factors were extracted and in each case were tentatively identified as tonal sensitivity, retentivity (memory for elements), and memory for form. The correlations of the music tests of one battery with subtests of Cattell's intelligence test and with tests of a literary nature are also reported.Karlin, J. E. The most commonly used method of factoring a matrix of intercorrelations is the centroid method developed by L. L. Thurstone. It is, however, necessary to transform the centroid matrix of factor loadings into a simple structure matrix in order to facilitate the interpretation of the factor loadings. Current methods for effecting this transformation are chiefly graphical and require considerable experience and personal judgment. This paper presents a new method for transforming an arbitrary factor matrix into a simple structure matrix by methods almost completely objective. The theory underlying the method is developed and approximation procedures are derived. The method is applied to a matrix of factor loadings previously analyzed by Thurstone.  相似文献

A fictitious factor matrix including 16 tests and 3 factors, one of which was ag factor, was prescribed. From it two typical factor problems, including errors of sampling, were derived. Students in training, without awareness of the factor patterns, arrived at essentially correct solutions by the use of Thurstone's centroid method with rotation of axes. Errors in the calculated factor matrix were very close in size to the sampling errors in the correlation coefficients. It is concluded that ag factor need not escape detection by Thurstone's procedures if the criteria of complete simple structure are not demanded.  相似文献

A simple method for extracting correlated factors simultaneously is described. The method is based on the idea that the centroid pattern coefficients for the sections of unit rank of the complete matrix may be interpreted as structure values for the entire matrix. Only the routine centroid average process is required.  相似文献

Thurstone's multiple group method of factor analysis has been widely used as a basis for rotation to simple structure. To make the most of the economy offered by this method, factor axes may be located directly by the correlation clusters; and methods of doing this are here discussed.  相似文献

This paper presents a new method of determining the minimum rank in factor analysis, appropriate to the principal axes solution. The new method is compared with a former method which, with some adjustment, is more convenient for the centroid approach. Both methods are applied to two familiar examples.  相似文献

This paper describes a simple orthogonal multiple factor approximation procedure that involves no inversion of the sign of negative residuals, the estimation of only as many communalities as there are factors, and none or only a few minor rotations of the axes in an attempt to obtain a meaningful solution. It also suggests a technique for the estimation of those communalities that must be estimated. The factor loadings obtained by means of this procedure, which we shall designate as the pre-selection procedure, are affected by the order in which the factors are obtained, showing a reduction in variance accounted for by each successive factor, as is characteristic of the centroid, bi-factor, and principal factor solutions. The entire procedure takes considerably less time than that involved in the orthodox centroid method alone.  相似文献

Bi-factor and multiple-factor analyses of the same data are compared in two respects. First, two criteria are suggested for determining when the factorization is adequate. This problem being more acute for the centroid method than for the bi-factor method, the latter is used primarily for comparison only. It is shown also that the omission from the simple structure of entries smaller than .10 yields a pattern which is a poorer fit to the original correlations than is the bi-factor pattern. Second, the second-order general factor obtained from the intercorrelations of the primaries is found to be highly correlated with the general factor of the bi-factor pattern.  相似文献

Methods are developed for factoring an arbitrary rectangular matrixS of rankr into the formFP, whereF hasr columns andP hasr rows. For the statistical problem of factor analysis,S may be the score matrix of a population of individuals on a battery of tests. ThenF is a matrix of factor loadings,P is a matrix of factor scores, andr is the number of factor variates. (As in current procedures, there remains a subsequent problem of rotation of axes and interpretation of factors, which is not discussed here.) Methods are also developed for factoring an arbitrary Gramian matrixG of rankr into the formFF, whereF hasr columns andF denotesF transposed. For the statistical problem of factor analysis,G may be the matrix of intercorrelations,R, of a battery of tests, with unity, communalities, or other parameters in the principal diagonal.R is proportional toSS, and it is shown thatS can be factored by factoringR. This may usually be the most economical procedure in practice; it should not be overlooked, however, thatS can be factored directly. The general methods build up anF (andP) in as many stages as desired; as many factors as may be deemed computationally practical can be extracted at a time. Perhaps it will usually be found convenient to extract not more than three factors at a time. Current procedures, like the centroid and principal axes, are special cases of a general method presented here for extracting one factor at a time.  相似文献

This note suggests that the reflection of residuals in the centroid method of factor analysis should be continued, whenever possible, after all the sums of the columns in the correlation matrix, excluding diagonal values, are positive. A criterion is given for determining whether further reflection is possible in such cases.  相似文献

The factor structure of right-wing authoritarianism (RWA) remains a contentious issue. Although designed to measure three underlying attitude clusters, aggression, submission and conventionalism, many items are deliberately double- or triple-barrelled, to capture the covariation of the three clusters in a unidimensional scale. Additionally, although the scale is balanced, there is an item wording direction bias in the clusters; aggression items are pro-trait, and conventionalism items are con-trait. Sub-scale structure is therefore potentially confounded with acquiescence bias. Although RWA as a unitary construct has been an effective tool for exploring prejudice, it would be useful in many cases to measure its underlying components directly. Proposed solutions to this problem include creating short-form scales as subsets of the original scale, or modifying items to simplify and un-confound the structure. We present convergent evidence of an underlying factor structure by considering one-, two- and three-factor solutions to the uncorrected scale and then using an indirect method to correct for acquiescence bias. Before and after correction, factor analysis supported a three-factor solution. Confirmatory factor analyses also support a three-factor solution compared to a one-factor solution.  相似文献

This paper reports on the third of a series of four experiments using similar concepts and methods for objective personality measurement, and overlapping test batteries. One hundred students were measured with 115 tests. The scores were correlated and factored by a re-iterated multiple group centroid method. The 17 factors thus obtained were rotated toward a clear simple structure. The relation of the rotated factors to earlier ones is indicated, but no extensive interpretation is attempted.  相似文献

The computation of intercorrelation matrices involving large numbers of variables and the subsequent factoring of these matrices present a formidable task. A method for estimating factor loadings without computing the intercorrelation matrix is developed. The estimation procedure is derived from a theoretical model which is shown to be a special case of the multiple-group centroid method of factoring. Empirical checks have indicated that the model, even though it makes some stringent assumptions, can be applied to a variety of variables found in psychological factoring problems. It has been found to be particularly useful in factoring test items.  相似文献

Simultaneous factor analysis in several populations   总被引:24,自引:0,他引:24
This paper is concerned with the study of similarities and differences in factor structures between different groups. A common situation occurs when a battery of tests has been administered to samples of examinees from several populations.A very general model is presented, in which any parameter in the factor analysis models (factor loadings, factor variances, factor covariances, and unique variances) for the different groups may be assigned an arbitrary value or constrained to be equal to some other parameter. Given such a specification, the model is estimated by the maximum likelihood method yielding a large samplex 2 of goodness of fit. By computing several solutions under different specifications one can test various hypotheses. The method is capable of dealing with any degree of invariance, from the one extreme, where nothing is invariant, to the other extreme, where everything is invariant. Neither the number of tests nor the number of common factors need to be the same for all groups, but to be at all interesting, it is assumed that there is a common core of tests in each battery that is the same or at least content-wise comparable. This research was supported by grant NSF-GB-12959 from National Science Foundation. The Bi-factor method   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The Bi-factor Method of factor analysis is described and illustrated with a small group of fourteen tests. A detailed illustration is given of how the method may be modified to the case of overlapping group factors. It is advocated that the Bi-factor pattern in unmodified form be used to determine the adequacy of tests for the measurement of unitary traits.  相似文献
