Modern psychology has, to all intents and purposes, become synonymous with cognitive psychology, with an emphasis on the idea that the brain is a form of computer, whose job is to take in sensory input, process information, and produce motor output. This places the brain at a remove from both the body and environment and denies the intimate connection that exists between them. As a result, a great injustice is done to both human and nonhuman animals: On the one hand, we fail to recognize the distinctive nature of nonhuman cognition, and on the other hand, we continue to promote a somewhat misleading view of human psychological capacities. Here, I suggest a more mutualistic, embodied, enactive view might allow us to ask more interesting questions about how animals of all kinds come to know their worlds, in ways that avoid the (inevitable) anthropocentric baggage of the cognitivist viewpoint.     

Motion impressions enhanced by converging motion lines

We investigated how motion lines drawn in the background of a running human silhouette affect motion impressions of a runner in a static image. Observers evaluated the strength and direction of motion impression. The results show that parallel lines do not enhance frontoparallel motion impressions, while converging lines do so in an in-depth direction. This is a counter-example to the hypothesis that motion lines in the background represent motion streaks of the background when one visually tracks a moving object.

Russell's Schema,Not Priest's Inclosure

On investigating a theorem that Russell used in discussing paradoxes of classes, Graham Priest distills a schema and then extends it to form an Inclosure Schema, which he argues is the common structure underlying both class-theoretical paradoxes (such as that of Russell, Cantor, Burali-Forti) and the paradoxes of ‘definability’ (offered by Richard, König-Dixon and Berry). This article shows that Russell's theorem is not Priest's schema and questions the application of Priest's Inclosure Schema to the paradoxes of ‘definability’.1 ^1?Special thanks to Francesco Orilia for criticisms of an early draft of this article.      

Displacement effects caused by converging lines and dots

Changes induced in orientation were examined under conditions of a dot or full-line version of a stimulus consisting of a test and inducing line. 44 subjects visually extended the test line to the surrounding circle on 11 trials and indicated their response by a mark on the circle. Magnitude of illusion was reduced by 54% for the dot version compared with the full-line form, but both produced an illusion significantly greater than zero. A significant practice effect was obtained with full lines but not with the dot form. Results are discussed in terms of lateral inhibition theory and related research.     

Action and perception: Evidence against converging selection processes

In a series of experiments we investigated whether identification of a lateralized visual target would benefit from concurrent execution of a reaching movement on the same side of space. Participants were tested in a dual-task paradigm. In one task, they performed a speeded reach movement towards a lateralized target button. The reach was cued by an auditory stimulus, and performed out of the participant's sight. In the other task, participants identified one of two simultaneous visual stimuli presented to the left and right visual fields, close to movement target locations. If motor activity were effective in modulating perceptual processes via a visuo-attentional shift, identification performance should have improved when the visual stimulus appeared at the movement target location. In fact, identification was not affected by the side of reach. Such results suggest substantially independent selection processes in motor and visual domains.

Biological Parenthood: Gestational,Not Genetic

Common-sense morality and legislations around the world ascribe normative relevance to biological connections between parents and children. Procreators who meet a modest standard of parental competence are believed to have a right to rear the children whom they brought into the world. I explore various attempts to justify this belief, and find most of these attempts lacking. I distinguish between two kinds of biological connection between parents and children: the genetic link and the gestational link. I argue that the second can better justify a right to rear.     

Evidence-Based Psychotherapy Means Evidence-Informed,Not Evidence-Driven

Some advocates of empirically-supported treatments (ESTs) argue that practitioners who do not use them are practicing unethically. I argue that it is unethical to try to impose EST criteria on the field of psychotherapy practice when (a) there is considerable controversy over these criteria, (b) there are alternative ways to construe evidence-based practice, and (c) by other criteria many approaches are evidence-based. I consider views of the relationship of science to practice, and other bases for practice such as practical knowledge and ethics. I conclude with a case history of client-centered therapy.
