The primary care groups (PCGs) newly introduced to the National Health Service require general practitioners and primary care teams to improve the health of their communities by addressing the health needs of their population, promoting the health of that population and working with other organizations to deliver effective and appropriate care. Community-oriented primary care (COPC) is an internationally tested model for primary health care development which is now being employed within the UK. This paper outlines the COPC model, and demonstrates how the skills and knowledge base of counselling psychologists and primary care counselling can contribute to a community-oriented primary care approach. 相似文献

Evidence-based guidance recommends that primary care health practitioners should deliver brief interventions to their patients to change behaviours to reduce overweight and obesity. This cross-sectional study investigates UK general practitioners' (GPs) and practice nurses' communication about overweight with their overweight and obese patients. Forty general practitioners and 47 practice nurses in two inner-London primary care organizations completed a questionnaire about past practice and concerns. When there was no identified medical problem, 38% of GPs and 14% of practice nurses reported raising the issue on less than 50% of occasions. Practice nurses were more likely than GPs to raise the issue of weight, both when there was no medical problem and when there was a medical problem. When they did raise the issue of overweight, only 9% did so in the context of presenting possible solutions to weight loss or in discussions about health promotion. Fifty two per cent of GPs and 28% of practice nurses had concerns about raising the issue of overweight; the most common being that patients would react emotionally to the message. These results suggest that there is considerable room for improvement in the frequency with which primary care practitioners address the questions of weight in their overweight patients, especially amongst doctors. Training to increase skills and confidence in communicating about weight is recommended. 相似文献

Much of the literature on the theory and practice of counselling is gender-blind, the assumption being that the emotional worlds of women and men are the same. This view is challenged, the author reviewing the work of feminist theorists and practitioners. Central to this discourse is the argument that to understand the internal psychic structures of women, her concepts of se& we have to acknowledge the effect of external and oppressive structures on her psychological development. ABSTRACTLiterature examining well-being benefits of gratitude experiences is currently thriving in psychological science. However, evidence of the physical health benefits of gratitude remains limited. Research and theory in affective science suggests an indirect relationship between gratitude and physical health. This study examines how receiving expressions of gratitude predicts physical health outcomes in a sample of acute care nurses over time. Registered nurses (N = 146) practicing in Oregon completed weekly surveys over 12 consecutive weeks describing their positive and negative events, health, and work-related experiences. Multilevel mediation models revealed that being thanked more often at work was positively related to a nurse’s satisfaction with the care they provided within that week, which subsequently predicted sleep quality, sleep adequacy, headaches, and attempts to eat healthy. These findings contribute to literature demonstrating the health benefits of gratitude by indicating that benefactors may experience improvements in subjective physical health through positive domain-relative satisfaction. 相似文献

Drawing in aphasia therapy has been used predominately as a substitution for speech or to augment communication when other modalities are non-functional. The value of drawing as a route for facilitating verbal expression has not been a focus of prior research. We compared the usefulness of drawing and writing as compensatory strategies for improving naming in individuals with aphasia. Activation patterns of writing and drawing in healthy adults were examined using fMRI. Clinical results suggest that drawing facilitated naming whereas writing diminished accurate naming responses, and that drawing quality is not relevant to this facilitatory effect. Functional MRI findings revealed strong bi-hemispheric activation of semantic and phonological networks while drawing that may support our clinical findings. 相似文献

The aim of the present study is to explore the views of migrant and non migrant students living in Greece on cultural diversity
in the classroom. It focuses on students of both the dominant (i.e. Greek) and nondominant (i.e. migrant) groups and investigates
their views in comparison to one another. Data were collected in the context of a pilot action research program aiming at
the empowerment of in-service teachers so that they actively support the migrant students’ integration into the regular classroom.
Two hundred and seventy students participated in the study. Data were selected through three scales especially constructed
for the purposes of the present study which explored (a) migrant and non migrant students’ views on cultural diversity in
the classroom, (b) their expectations from the implementation of the above mentioned program, and (c) the reasons they consider
important their participation in it. The results reveal the contradictions and the conflicting views of older students of
the non migrant group and point to the necessity for intervention programs that will take into consideration not only the
educational needs of students of diverse cultural backgrounds but also the psychological needs of all students of both the dominant and the nondominant groups.

We used meta‐analysis and semipartial correlations to examine the relative strength and incremental variance accounted for by 7 categories of recruiting predictors across multiple recruitment stages on applicant attraction. Based on 232 studies (250 samples, 3,518 coefficients, n= 108,632), we found that characteristics of the job, organization, and recruitment process, recruiter behaviors, perceived fit, and hiring expectancies (but not perceived alternatives) accounted for unique variance in applicant attraction at multiple stages. Perceived fit was the strongest relative and unique variance predictor of applicant attraction albeit a nonsignificant predictor of job choice. Although not among the largest zero‐order predictors, recruiter behaviors accounted for substantial incremental variance at the first 2 stages. Organizational characteristics are more heavily weighed by applicants when maintaining applicant status as compared to the stage of application, and recruitment process characteristics are weighed progressively more as the recruitment stages advance. Job characteristics accounted for the greatest unique variance in job choice decisions. Job characteristics are more predictive in field studies, whereas recruiter behaviors, recruitment process characteristics, hiring expectancies, and perceived alternatives produced larger effect sizes in the laboratory. Results are discussed in terms of their theoretical and practical implications with future research suggestions. 相似文献

The mass suicide of 39 members of Heaven's Gate in March of 1997 led to public fears about the presence of ‘spiritual predators’ on the world wide web. This paper describes and examines the nature of these fears, as reported in the media. It then sets these fears against what we know about the use of the Internet by new religions, about who joins new religious movements and why, and the social profile of Internet users. It is argued that the emergence of the Internet has yet to significantly change the nature of religious recruitment in contemporary society. The Internet as a medium of communication, however, may be having other largely unanticipated effects on the form and functioning of religion, both old and new, in the future. Some of the potential perils of the Internet are discussed with reference to the impact of this new medium on questions of religious freedom, community, social pluralism, and social control. 相似文献

Abstract Competing hypotheses explaining gender differences in depression were compared in a one-year longitudinal study of parents of ill children in Israel. Women were found to have more depressed mood than men when their children were ill or well, but both men and women responded with increased depression when their child was ill. Women were more likely than men to be with an ill child at the hospital, even if employed, suggesting role overload. Women did not report fewer personal or social resources than men, indicating that poverty of resources could not explain sex differences on depression. Nor did women use their resources less effectively than did men. Women were less depressed the greater their intimacy with their spouse and friends, but at all levels of intimacy were more depressed than men. Men, in contrast, isolated themselves from social support at the time of their child's illness and it was argued that men might be avoiding stress contagion. The importance of examining differential responding of men and women to stressors that have common meaning for both sexes was discussed. 相似文献

Affective commitment to the organization: the contribution of perceived organizational support 总被引:16,自引:0,他引:16
Three studies examined the interrelationships among work experiences, perceived organizational support (POS), affective commitment (AC), and employee turnover. Using a diverse sample of 367 employees drawn from a variety of organizations, Study 1 found that POS mediated positive associations of organizational rewards, procedural justice, and supervisor support with AC. Study 2 examined changes of POS and AC in retail employees over a 2-year span (N = 333) and a 3-year span (N = 226). POS was positively related to temporal changes in AC, suggesting that POS leads to AC. Study 3 found a negative relationship between POS and subsequent voluntary employee turnover that was mediated by AC in retail employees (N = 1,124) and in poultry- and feed-processing workers (N = 262). These results suggest that favorable work conditions operate via POS to increase AC, which, in turn, decreases employee withdrawal behavior. 相似文献

What are the mental health status and active treatment needs of nursing home residents? A stratified random sample of 828 residents in 25 facilities serving Medicaid recipients was assessed for levels of physical and psychosocial functioning. Although 91.2% had sufficiently high levels of medical and physical care needs to justify nursing home placement, 79.6% also had moderate to intense needs for mental health care. Older residents, relative to their younger counterparts, had more intense medical and mental health care needs. It was also found that psychiatric diagnosis was a poor indicator of mental health service needs, particularly among elderly individuals. 相似文献

Bonding is an ongoing aspect of intersubjective experience, a type of mental relationship to oneself and others. As a behavioral mode, bonding utilizes verbal and nonverbal communication primarily to establish a basic feeling of connection between individuals. Bonding is the floor, a cognitive-affective state that precedes and prepares the way for the complex processes underlying identification. The concept relates to Bion's early theory of basic assumptions, and takes on new and different meanings according to his later ideas regarding social communication. Bonding is also a therapeutic posture or technique, an element in the establishment of group cohesion, the positive transference, and therapeutic and group alliance. Case examples illustrate how the therapist and other group members bring a complex of bonding needs and anxieties that must be negotiated to establish and maintain bonding, which is a necessary condition for successful therapeutic work. 相似文献
