The acquisition and maintenance by rats of single alternation, double alternation, and four other repeating patterns of reinforced and non-reinforced trials was studied in a discrete-trial lever-pressing situation. The rats learned all these patterns in a small number of experimental sessions. Single alternation was learned more rapidly than the more complex patterns. Rate of learning single and double alternation decreased moderately as inter-trial interval increased. Abrupt changes in the scheduling of trials, either by doubling the inter-trial interval or by shifting from fixed to variable trial spacing, temporarily disrupted the patterned performance. Two hypotheses concerned with the means by which the rats could have learned to conform to the pattern were examined: (1) “timing” of the interval between successive reinforcements; and (2) control of responding on a trial by the outcome of preceding trials, depending on the consistency with which these outcomes were associated with reinforced or non-reinforced trials in the pattern and on how many trials back these outcomes occurred. The second hypothesis accounted for the relative frequency of errors on trials at various locations in the sequences, and predicted most of the changes in error frequency observed in experiments in which “inter-trial stimuli” were added to the sequences.  相似文献

Upper- and lower-case letters of the alphabet were presented sequentially to S using .2-sec and. 7-sec RSIs. Reaction times for naming the letters were recorded for three classes of stimulus events: the letter was identical in form and name to the immediately preceding one (stimulus repetitions); the letter had the same name but a different form than the preceding one (response repetitions); and the letter was different in form and name from the preceding one (nonrepetitions). The results showed a significant advantage of SR over RR that decreased as the RSI increased and depended on the similarity of the upper and lower cases for the particular letters. These results are comparable to those obtained in letter-matching studies. A model to account for the results is proposed.  相似文献

Spatial alternation performance in rats is usually evaluated with the T-Maze. The first aim of this study was to analyze the effect of a selective lesion of medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) on performance in a T-maze. Second, we wanted to validate a new test using alternation in a water maze (AWM). The mPFC of 21 male Sprague-Dawley rats was lesioned bilaterally using in situ microinjection of ibotenic acid. Thirteen control rats received injections of the vehicle only. Results show that mPFC lesioned rats were significantly impaired in the T-Maze as well as in the AWM compared to controls. These results validate the AWM as a frontal cortex dependent task probing working memory and/or behavioral flexibility. We suggest that the AWM may be more powerful than the T-maze as an investigational tool, given that is can be easily compared to other water maze tasks that evaluate other (nonfrontal) cognitive modules.  相似文献

The effect of contextual stimuli on proactive interference in the rat was investigated in three experiments. The task was a modified delayed alternation procedure in which the rat was initially forced to one side of a T maze (the interfering forcing) followed by a forcing to the opposite side (the target forcing). A free choice run followed the target forcing in which a turn in either direction could be made. In order to obtain reinforcement on the free choice run, the rat was required to turn in the direction opposite that of the target forcing (i.e., in the same direction as the interfering forcing). Manipulation of the context prevailing during the interfering forcing, target forcing, and free choice runs revealed that free choice accuracy was (a) greater when the interfering and target forcings were conducted in different contexts than when they were conducted in the same context and (b) influenced only slightly, if at all, by whether the free choice context coincided with that prevailing during the interfering forcing or with that prevailing during the target forcing.  相似文献

Pigeons were studied in a delayed-response task requiring alternation of key pecks on two response keys. Blackouts of from 1 to 10 sec intervened between successive choices on the two keys.

The following results were obtained: (1) Birds performed at well above chance accuracy on all the delays tested. Accuracy was generally lowest at 1- and 10-sec delays. (2) Overt postural orientations during the delay interval appeared to mediate accurate key-pecking behavior. (3) The shape of the delay vs. accuracy function was discussed in terms of the possibly confounding influences of (a) stimulus “trace” variables, and (b) aversive effects of the time outs produced by incorrect responding.

An experiment is reported in which rats were forced equally often to each arm of a T-maze, and, following each forced trial, were given a free trial. Group R were rewarded for repeating (i.e. choosing the side to which they had just been forced), group A for alternating. All rats began by alternating, but group R eventually learned to repeat. Various delays between free and forced trials were introduced, and the forgetting curve was found to be similar for the two groups. It is argued that these results show: (i) The decline in alternation with delay found in experiments on spontaneous and rewarded alternation is due to loss of information rather than a decline in the alternation tendency. (ii) The trace involved is sufficiently general to be regarded as a memory trace. The fact that rats can learn to repeat is inconsistent with the accounts of the memory trace suggested by the theories of Deutsch and Walker.  相似文献

Factors affecting spontaneous alternation behavior (SAB) in animals, for example, age, gender and species studied; type of apparatus and cues employed; and neuro-anatomical, neuro-chemical and motivational status of the organism, were reviewed. Despite a myriad of experiments showing interesting main effects of such variables, little research has been performed assessing the interactive affects of these factors on alternation behavior. For example, psychologists test rats in central nervous system (CNS) lesion studies, whereas psychopharmacologists tend to assess SAB in mice. Most importantly, studies have not been reported investigating the possible interactions among species, brain lesions and drugs. This is an unfortunate omission since several important alternation models include propositions relating to cholinergic and/or serotonergic coding in the hippocampus. Examination of behavioral studies revealed the primary cue for alternation among invertebrates to be body turn, whereas vertebrates rely primarily on directional and odor cues. Reference to the seeking of stimulus change remains the most compelling motivational account of why animals manifest this ubiquitious and reliable behavior pattern. A frequent topic of psychological research is the estimation of the correlation between two variables from a sample that underwent a selection process based on a third variable. Due to indirect range restriction, the sample correlation is a biased estimator of the population correlation, and a correction formula is used. In the past, bootstrap standard error and confidence intervals for the corrected correlations were examined with normal data. The present study proposes a large-sample estimate (an analytic method) for the standard error, and a corresponding confidence interval for the corrected correlation. Monte Carlo simulation studies involving both normal and non-normal data were conducted to examine the empirical performance of the bootstrap and analytic methods. Results indicated that with both normal and non-normal data, the bootstrap standard error and confidence interval were generally accurate across simulation conditions (restricted sample size, selection ratio, and population correlations) and outperformed estimates of the analytic method. However, with certain combinations of distribution type and model conditions, the analytic method has an advantage, offering reasonable estimates of the standard error and confidence interval without resorting to the bootstrap procedure's computer-intensive approach. Rearing rats in isolation between 23 and 45 days caused a lasting increase in photocell-cage activity, even if the animals were subsequently rehoused in social groups until 125 days of age. In contrast to its effects upon activity, isolation had no effect upon spontaneous alternation in a Y-maze. This dissociation argues for caution in relating hyperactivity and reduced alternation to a unitary deficit in an inhibitory system.  相似文献

Sixteen rats were deprived of paradoxical sleep (PS) for 4 h using the "flower pot" technique and 16 other served as yoked controls. PS-deprived and control rats then had to learn a water maze using either a standard allocentric configuration (i.e., finding the submerged platform using external cues; n = 6/group) or an alternation version (goal platform alternating between two locations; n 10/group). Rats were submitted to six trials with a cutoff time of 60 s and an intertrial interval of 5 min. Criterion was set as two consecutive successful completions. PS-deprived rats made more quadrant entries and took more time to reach criterion on the alternation task than control rats while both groups were equal on the allocentric task. Based on lesion studies (Ethier et al., this issue) we propose that tasks that require an intact medial prefrontal cortex are particularly sensitive to PS deprivation.  相似文献

By taking advantage of an experimental design which increases the number of observations per subject, the sensitivity of the proposed test is increased. In the first of a series of subexperiments, the score of a randomly selected experimentalS is ranked with the scores of the remaining (control)Ss, and the experimentalS is discarded. This procedure is repeated until oneS remains. The test criterion,R n , is the sum of ranks of the experimentalSs; its exact sampling distribution, a normal approximation, and the sensitivity of the test relative to the WilcoxonT, are described. Because of the large number of scores obtained, the test is particularly useful when preparingSs is more costly than testing them, e.g., in tests following involved conditioning procedures. Since eachS is discarded after experimental treatment, the test fills a real need in studies involving radiation, ablation, or other irreversible treatments.The test criterion, the associated experimental procedure, and the measure of sensitivity are due to SHR; the generating function, tables, and large sample approximation are due to JNC.  相似文献
